I think the other version where you kick keage more like maegeri is not Shotokan at all but is a Gojo style karate keage. Not 100% sure but thats what Ive learnt. They are pretty much a different kick (Shotokan version is much harder to execute since it reguires more mobility).

Great explanations and tips - unfortunately I have become very immobile after almost 25 years of karate break and I don't know whether I will get sufficient mobility for a Yoko Geri Keage again ...

I would be very happy if a trainer showed exercises for very stiff karatekas. Many exercises and stretches assume that the basic mobility is too high. that can be very demotivating.

Hello thank you very much for your remark indeed it is a good idea to propose a video which explains how to do this kick with less flexibility. I will make a next video in this direction.

Thanks for this video Sensei, it’s the mist detailed one I have seen. If I may I have a question. Do you kick with the blade of the foot even or is it higher on the fingers or heel side? Should the supporting foot have a little give to help open the hip or should it remain parallel? Thanks! I am still perfecting this kick, this video has been very informative. Merci!

Hello thank you very much for your message. I am very honored by your interest in videos.Regarding that kick, KEAGE. There are possible variations that may exist.
      The two main ones are:
the 1tst classic version, in this case the positioning of the foot is as follows:
The front of the foot and the heel are generally at the same level and parallel to the ground, here the kick is not penetrating but it is also SOKUTO which guides the placement of the foot.
      The 2nd version looks like a Mae-Geri-Keage.
In this case, the positioning of the foot is as follows:
The hip opens more outwards at the last moment and therefore the heel is lower than the toe. Here we try to strike with HAISOKU.
BUT while keeping SOKUTO which guides the foot.
I hope I was able to explain this to you properly. It's always more difficult in writing than in video. I will make a video answers to the questions soon (FAQ) and I will therefore provide a visual answer with demonstration.

Left hip of mine is always a bitch. Only thing that stops me from getting the full splits

But this is not a yoko geri at all. Look at the position of the foot at around 3:18. It is a mae geri thrown to the side. And look at the supportting foot: the heel is at a 90 degree angle with respect to the direction of the kick, preventing proper opening of the hip

Thank you very much for your post and the attention you have had for this video.
Indeed, in my opinion there are different possible ways to do Keage.
The most classic way is to strike from the bottom up.
Another lesser-known method is to strike with the side of the foot that goes up like a Mae-Geri to the side.
The second is more difficult because it also depends on the flexibility of each person.
