On 13th day of the war, once he went into Chakravuga, none from Kaurava army could defeat him in one-on-one combat including Drona, Kripa, Duryodhana and even Karna. He was causing heavy loss to them. Then Drona decided that only way to defeat him is by attacking all at once, which is against the rule of the war. And they did so and mercilessly killed him. He is definitely worth all this hype for his age (around 16 yrs). Do read wikipedia article about him.

Very Well Said! Mahabharatham is not written as a fact but as a narration to Janamjeya(Grandson of Abhimanyu).It is natural to distort history in favor of winners. It could also be the reason why the direct bloodline(Abhimanyu,Arjuna) of Janamjeya get full limelight.
But it was written by the great sage veda vyasar and the entire kurukshethra war is narration of Sanjayan who describes the might of every great warrior Bheeshma, Drona and karna. And in fact kurukshethra war is divided as Bheeshma, Drona,karna and shalya parva.
