How to Build a Cattle Panel Garden Arch Trellis

- A garden arch trellis can add beauty to your garden and is a great support for many plants. It is simple to construct using a cattle panel and metal T-posts. Deciding how wide to construct it and high high you want it are important factors; Gardener Scott demonstrates different widths and how they look. Securing the panels to vertical supports reduces instability and swaying while creating vertical sides to the arch. It is advisable to use a post drive for pounding in the T-posts.

Thank you very much.
Would it be possible to carry/ roll and place cattle wire between the uprights before undoing it. Being 5' foot 74 year old woman, I might not be able to carry the wire like you do but still quite strong.Thankyou ia.
@@GardenerScott say you,. What size cattle panel are you using
@@ElvisAaronpresleybyRustyMartin For the arch I'm using the full panel. 16' long and 50" wide.
I LOVE this video. It's so well done, easy step by step instruction. Last year you helped me build my first raised bed & hoop cover, both from your videos and answering my questions :) This year; cattle panel trellis is my goal! :) I've now watched this video 7 times over the last year :) as well as all your other videos on cattle panels). Yesterday I drove to a farm store and bought my first cattle pannel . I've looked forward to building this trellis this all winter! Thanks Scott!! You give me confidence that I can do these projects all by my self :) Your videos are so well done, and I know it must take you a long, arduous time to make, with all the fine details and camera angles you include. THank you! thank you! Thank you! You are a real GEM :)
I built my two side by side hoop trellises 108" long (2 Panels) 8' wide on the bottom with 76" headroom (I am 67" tall) , there is 4' walkway between the two trellises on the outside, I installed my 2' x 4' x 8" deep raised beds on the inside of the trellis and attached the cattle panel to the outside of the raised bed. I did this so I can cover the trellis with plastic film in winter and use the hoop trellis for a greenhouse. I can grow winter greens in the beds and container veggies and other plants in the 6' x 9' space between the raised beds .
I built one this year after seeing this video, then planted 3 cherry tomato plants on either side. 👌 I LOVE IT! They're almost to the top already!
I did five cattle panels with 2 8-ft posts for each side of each panel. I use galvanized t-post connectors to connect the panel to the posts and galvanized wire to connect each of the panels together.
Perhaps a bit overkill but I shouldn't have to worry about it for quite a while. If you do use zip ties, Make sure they're rated for UV exposure or you'll be replacing them when they break.
Thank you Gardener Scott. I have spent way too much time today watching you teach. What an amazing experience. I enjoyed it very much. I’m a mediocre gardener that just keeps trying to get better. I enjoyed it so very much. Thank you for your time and knowledge and for sharing it.
I will be using this system for cukes, tomatoes & squash. For 30+ years I've made a trellis but didn't use raised boxes. Now I am. It will be so much easier for me and my aching body. I love your channel. Thank you for sharing your tips.
Thank you. Now I’m ready to build my trellis.
I like those garden boxes and the trellis too.
Its so original method,it can be used plentifully the sunshine, the soil, can be used as moveable planting shed, defending the pants from deer , goats, protecting flowers far away raining while in its blooming time, and also could be used in vertical planting! What an creative idea!
Yes, it is. Thank you.
Use Black cable ties. They will blend in better. Also around Xmas the big box store sell Green cable ties.
BTW, I rent a trailer at a ranch store ($15) to bring home my numerous panels
I have 14 raised garden beds (4' x 3' each). I created this trellis with one end attached to the OUTSIDE of the boxes on either side of the pathway, so the tunnel is over the path rather than over the beds. This way I have easy access to the beds and a shady arch over the path. Adding more this spring! Thank you so much for this well-done and informative vid.
Amazon sells a smaller drill auger for those t post i got one and boy does it save time. I have hard rocky soil and the auger still dug its way through. it cost 15 $. I set two post in about 5 mins just today.
This is the best idea I've seen for making an arched trellis for the garden. Thank you so much!
You're my absolute favorite! Thank you for your thoroughness and kind way of teaching.
I love gardening. Your is a great channel. Thank you!
You just answered the question I had been pondering of trellis placement in the bed. I was concerned about not being able to easily access things in the middle of the bed if the trellis was placed on the inside, I think the middle is the perfect placement for my plan. I can't thank you enough for all of your guidance!
I like to spray paint the tops of the t posts with Hunter Green paint. Really improves the looks.
Good tip, thx 👍
Thank you! I just built this in my backyard garden for my squash, zucchini, small melons, and cucumber.
Wonderful!
How has it worked out for the cucumbers? I’m thinking of try this for my cucumbers this year... I have to work out placement so it doesn’t shade my other plants.
I'm impressed with this videos. pragmatic, in less than a few seconds, I got an idea of how to create a trellis. I often look at videos where they talk too much (unnecessary). Thank you for this brilliant and cost effective Idea!
Just saved me a whole lot of work...and searching for answers. Thank you!
Great video. This is exactly what I was just telling my husband that I want. This video will be perfect for him to watch. Thank you so much. Great demonstration. 🙏😃
this is an excellent idea, ⟟ will try it in my garden. Thank you so much.
Excellent! I'm going to do the same this spring. Merry Christmas Gardener Scott!!🎉 Blessings to you and yours ❤
thanks for posting this very informative video... loved your shirt too, it raises awareness & acceptance of people with autism. you're awesome!
Best panel/ garden video on the net!!
Thanks Scott!!
Thank you Gardener Scott, I am really happy to see your video and love your honest teaching ❤️.
Just what I needed right when I needed it! Trying to decide how far apart to put it at the bottom. This will really help.
Lots of prep work, good job💜
Thank you for a great tutorial! Beautiful job!!!!
I used tow ropes and the project was easily managed on my own. Use two T posts on each side no cutting required
Thank you, I am going to be doing this for the first time this weekend. ❤️
I absolutely love this so much! And it is exactly what I was looking for to create a beautiful entrance to our side yard where we have our chicken run and bee hives! Now my 9yo will be able to grow his loofah and sunflowers! 🥰🥰🥰
What is the size of the cattle panel?
I love watching your videos Gardener Scott! You are so nice and really inspire me to garden.
Thanks, Joann!
Hello gardener Scott. I am so happy and cannot wait till next season‘s garden crap, just ordered two cattle panels to hang my pole beans and tomatoes on. Cannot thank you enough for your help.
Richard
You're welcome, Richard. Next year can't come soon enough.
Thank you Gardner Scott, I was looking for a way to make those to plant my pole beans on next season.
This is fantastic. Looks beautiful and very functional. Appreciate your videos very much
The Mr. Rogers of gardening
So helpful! Scott, I love how your channel is practice but you also mind the details and care about how things look!!
Thank you for your step by step instruction, it definitely helped me with information to achieve my ideas for my own garden. The only thing I would add is better products for securing things. I live in the southwest, the sun and heat is brutal during the summer months. Anything made of plastic dry rots, it feels like in days, but by the end of a summer season anything " made of plastic" becomes brittle and breaks. Do not get me wrong, it doesn't decompose, it just turns into tiny itty bitty little pieces of plastic. I would encourage people in general to use other things to secure everything.
Great instructional video, thank you. I have several arches at 4, 5, and 6 foot widths. All are on the ground and secured with rebar or threaded rod with about 40 inches above ground. I held the arch in place with cinder blocks while I installed the supports, then added the raised beds. Some are outside as yours are but one 12' arch has 2' beds inside the arch with a 2' walkway. It maximizes my limited space and I can grow lettuce in the shade of the beans in the warmer summer months. I love the welcoming look of the arch.
One of the best uses for cattle panels I've seen comes from Old Alabama Gardener. He uses t-posts and chain link top rail to make a T-shaped trellis for really tall plants so they grow up the vertical part then they can run across the horizontal. I used 6' rebar pounded in to 3' and slipped top rail over it instead of t-posts and it's held up well. The vertical piece of top rail is pounded in to my preferred height of 5'9". I cut the 10.5' top rail to 7' for the vertical and 3.5' for the horizontal and ran it down the middle of a 2' raised bed. Works great for my garden. I like the clean lines of the metal. I used cable ties to hold it at first then added worm screw clamps. Here's his video ruclips.net/video/nE92hZvcmgo/видео.html
Thanks for a thorough comment. I like the idea of the beds inside the arch to provide shade. I appreciate your sharing that video; it's an interesting idea that I may try. Your modification sounds very doable. My preferred method for a high trellis using cattle panels is in this video of mine: ruclips.net/video/bMqBjEc38K0/видео.html
I love your autism awareness shirt...thanks for your shared knowledge in gardening too.
Thanks for the video! I was trying to figure out how tall one of these would be with a 5' bench under it, so you solved that for me!
I am working in a school garden, and this video made me want to put a trellis in the garden! it would look so good if all the vines were hanging from the arch, and i bet that it will look so amazing when melons or cucumbers grow on it!
It does look good when covered with vines!
And luffa gourd sponges!
Cool tutorial. I have been thinking and rethinking the best way to stake my vining veggies. I have a clear picture now after this. Thanks again!!
So happy you popped up in my recommendations! 🌱🌞
Thank you. 🙂
Great informative video. I was just looking to find out how far to space my raised beds and this video answered all my questions. Great job.
Smart hat with the wide brim for same as myself as skin Dr. advised me. T post drivers are much safer than hammers.
Great informative video. Which is your standard.
Thanks for the teaching Sir
Thanks for sharing your knowledge & process, always appreciated. I’m hoping to build a very small trellis next year, so will definitely reference this video again come Spring 2020.
You're welcome. Enjoy your trellis next year. 🙂
Thank you 👍 that was excellent information.
Wonderful video Scott. This gives me lots of ideas for my trellis coming soon!
Super nice. Love it. Thank you.
Well done! Great looking trellis!
Thanks, Mary.
That’s beautiful!
Grateful 💚
great job scott
great teacher
Simple & Awesome. Great presentation
Very very informative
This is brilliant! My husband and I just bought our first home and while we have done some container gardening, we are looking forward to raised beds in our yard and growing vegetables. We talked about having a squash/gourd trellis and this is what we will do to make that happen! thank you so much!! what kind of perennial vines will you use? I was thinking it would be nice to have some flowering vines mixed in for pollenators. Thank you!! I am loving your channel and subscribed, I am also telling people about you, we have a bunch of gardeners at church so talking and learning from them is fun too. Thank you!
I've planted some honeysuckle and grape vines for the trellis. I'll also grow Cardinal Flowers each year in addition to other annuals. Welcome to the channel! Thanks!
Thank you so much for this useful tutorial 🙏 exactly what I was looking for 😍
Could you also tel us how you have secured the 4x4 on top of each other?
Here's the video that shows how; ruclips.net/video/eyT7SSE3bD4/видео.html
Loved it, This is the one I wanted😄👏🙏
Thanks for this great instructional video. As you mentioned, transportation of the cattle panel would be challenging if a person does not have access to a truck, trailer, or delivery service. I have some 12 gauge fencing. Do you think that would be sturdy enough for cucumbers or pole beans with a tee post on each side of my 4 ft. wide fencing?
Hi, Tricia. 12-gauge fencing can be perfect for lightweight plants like cucumbers and beans. I would use two T-posts on each side of the fencing and limit the height so it doesn't get top heavy. Cattle panels can handle watermelons and heavy perennial vines, but for typical garden plants you should have success with the lighter gauge fence.
Replacing the white cable ties with wire was a good move. The white cable ties are not UV rated for outside use. Something I had to learn in installing cableTV for over 20 years. The white would have broken within just a few months. Even the black would have become brittle within about a year, and broken off. Wire was your best bet. The cable ties would be great for holding it in place temporarily, but not as a permanent solution.
I am so glad I ran across your u tubes! Wonderful and instructional! Thank you !!!
You're welcome. Thanks.
As a thank you im subscribing
Thanks, Rowell. Welcome to the channel!
Great video, thank you.
straight to the point!
Excellent video!!
As usual great stuff! You mentioned gourds, melons, and cucumber. Are there any hardy perennials that would climb a trellace? So the plants will survive a winter and keep going, giving lots of fruit?
Thanks! There are a number of perennials depending on your zone. I planted Trumpet Vine this year and will add honeysuckle later. The vegetable vines die with frost and are treated as annuals.
I made my first raised bed (thanks to you) and I plan on making 2 more. I didn't realized that cucumbers needed a trellis so I watched this video. My challenge is my backyard is narrow so my raised bed is long way so to put a vertical arch, it would be connecting the width (44 1/2") of one raised bed to another. I guess I would have to cut the cattle panel to make it fit. What do you think?
You don't have to trellis cucumbers, I just find that can be a good way to get more plants in a smaller space. They can grow six feet long and take up a lot of space. For your narrow backyard, a trellis may be best and it doesn't need to be as tall as this arch.
Live that shirt.
Lovely. You do such a good job explaining things. Loved the examples on 4' vs. 5' vs. 6' apart and giving a visual. Excellent video. Beautiful results. I am new to the channel and enjoying all your great wisdom. I would like to know what you built your beds out of......do you have a video on constructing a raised bed? It would be nice if you would do a walk through of your beds and tell what the sizes are on each one. Thanks so much.
Thanks! I have a couple of videos on building different raised beds and am planning a walk-through video next month. Thanks for the suggestion.
Great design
I absolutely love this video. Thank you so much! I plan to make a 3’ arch and a couple steel planters. I think this is one of my favorite videos you’ve done Scott. THANKS AGAIN!!!!
Thank for the great advice!
thanks for this
Great video thank you. Could you make a video for wind barrier with glass panels.?
Thanks for the suggestion. If I do that I will make a video.
Hi Scott. First off, THANK YOU for the way you teach. You do such a great job putting the process into manageable and understandable baby steps. I live in the Pacific Northwest where the sun doesn't go up and over my beds as much as it shines at an angle from the south as it moves from east to west. I haven't figured out whether to incorporate an arch that runs east/west or north/south in order to maximize on the sun exposure. Any thoughts?
The arch in this video is east-west and I planned the plants in the beds to take into account the angle of the sun. The north side will be mostly shaded and the plants need to be able to grow with less light. I'm planning another north-south arch and will have more flexibility in choosing plants.
Tractor Supply Co. (TSC) have them in 16 ft and 8 ft lengths
Great video thank u
Thank you!
Hi Gardener Scott. I want to use this ideas to grow small sugar pumpkins and squash. I was wondering what kind of thickness where the cattle panel (the wire diameter and mesh size). Thank you
The cattle panel is very thick, 4-gauge steel. It's strong enough for pumpkins and squash.
I love your educational channel. But, many of us live where cattle panels just are not available. If you order them, they are expensive.
Thanks!
I love this! Do you have a video or photo of the perennials now (3 years later)?
I don't have a dedicated video but you can see them in the background of my videos last year.
it's the worn toes on the boots for me :)
random, but I love your shirt, I have it too!
Ok, I have the same setup as you do and I truly love it! Now for what I want to plant, is a cantalipe, wondering if I can trellis that? Thank you for your time, And by the way your project looks great! 😉🐴🐔
Sure, cattle panel arches can support cantaloupe. Thanks.
I use fence staples to hold my cattle panels to the wood
Thanks. I ended up doing that after I finished the video.
Hi Gary. Thank you for this video. You are a good teacher, clear and concise directions. We are making tunnels this weekend, I am so glad that I watched this. How wide are these beds, I think you said 18” tall and 10’ long? Thank you again.
Hi, Marilyn. I am Scott. The beds are 33" wide, which gives 26" of planting space.
@@GardenerScott thank you for your quick response. I’m glad I asked because we are planning on making ours 3.5’.
@@GardenerScott I apologize for calling you Scott. 🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️ I also watch The Rusted Garden.
Hey thanks man!
Thank you for a very informative video, my only question would be, have you considered using t-post clips to secure the cattle panels to the t posts?
I have and the thickness of the panel is more than the clips are designed for. They can work with a little help from pliers.
Great video!!
Gardener Scott, I have two new raised beds 5x3.5 and 24 inches apart. I have already filled the containers with mulch dirt etc. What would I do at this point to make an arched trellis for cucumbers and gourds to climb? Thanks for the great video!
You can still use a cattle panel arch and secure it with posts like I show in the video. Depending on how wide you want it, you can anchor it on the outside of your beds.
Does it matter which way the arch or bed is oriented as far as light?
It may, depending on the plants. With an east-west bed, the back side of the arch will almost always be in the shade when it's covered by plants. A north-south bed will get more even sun through the day.
Great Video and idea!
Thanks, Ken.
Thank you for your video! I would like to know if you plant tomato plants on the inside or outside of the arch? Can you please tell me? Thanks
I plant on the inside and let them grow through. I have other videos that show my tomato trellis and how they grow.
Love your shirt!
