Good to hear your take on these lights. It’s funny how much lighting gear is also great camping gear. Apart from the startup time, another thing that bugs me is how hot they get at 100% in just a few minutes, but overall they’re great lights.
@@soreeyez Heat dissipation is definitely necessary, but when it's nearly too hot to touch, that means they have insufficient cooling. In all practicality, hardly anyone will ever use them at 100% brightness constantly, so it's not a big deal, just should be kept in mind if that's your plan.
@@NewLayer i believe it's too hot to touch because manufacturers are pushing the technology to its max. It's quite common for 🔦 flashlights to get very hot very fast at its max output too. Hence, I always try to get a model with a higher output or runtime to stay comfortably below its 100% output. As with all lights, heat is a byproduct. But newer LEDs are improving. Manufacturers just prefer offering brighter lights to entice buyers. Like the megapixel of the past with digital cameras?
A bit late to the party here, but I LOVE your review here since I'm considering purchasing a couple of these lights as an alternative for self-taping auditions in my home studio and they seem perfect to throw in my go bag in case I need to self tape while on travel from a hotel room. Have begun watching your other vids. A have a fairly good concept of general filmmaking and a basic understanding of lighting physics (i.e., 3-point lighting) but I appreciate your wonderful ability to translate the sometimes complicated jargon to something the everyday guy can understand.
I liked the and disliked almost the same things! I also take it with me for all shoots. I saw this video pop up when I was researching what to name my video ;)
Haha, that's funny! I don't hardly use the light at all just because of some of those reasons AND the blue light no longer works in the light. Must have dropped it too many times :p
Neat light, the jacket light part was funny to me 😂 I mean I can see it used as an effect, but just thought it was funny. Anyway keep up the good work 💚💙💜
I feel they have their own strengths and weaknesses, but I think it's a good supplemental light. I do think I like the YN360ii because it's a bit longer of a light, so I'd say a bigger nanlite pavotube would be a better comparison.
Great review! I also got mine last June and been using it for 2 months. I also created a review to that light but I'm still editing the video. Hopefully, it will be posted next week. Anyways Ive been following your channel for a while now and thank you for sharing this video. I am still new to filmmaking and still learning. And bcoz of your videos, I learned a lot. more video to come! cheers!
@@FellowFilmmaker good that you mentioned that there will be an upcoming app for controling via smartphone. I hear the news but couldnt conclude if thats true...and thats great that its true. Thanks!
For people buying this light I want to mention that the CCT colors are really bad. Setting it to 3200K will give you a very magenta light and you need to try to fix it yourself with the G/M settings. If you compare this to the 15X which is great out of the box. So its hard to use both the 15X and the 6C together as they produce a very different result.
@@FellowFilmmaker just one enquiry...I am from India and recently started my RUclips channel. I am doing art videos and needed some budget lights to record OVERHEAD video's. What do you suggest!!!. Love if you make a video on overhead lighting setup....thanks
Hmmm overhead lighting.... well you could use a Godox UL150 with a lantern diffuser and that could work nicely perhaps. It all depends on budget and space
Little update: nanlite has the app out and by now offers a transmitter box THAT YOU NEED TO RUN THE APP for about 90 bucks or so. Fair enough I'd say. Transmitterbox goes by the name of: Nanlte WS-TB1 Transmitterbox.
2700 Kelvin is a warmer color temp, while 6000K is a cooler temp. So it's normal for there to be no warmth in the light at a higher temp. Should be warm/yellow at 2700 and white around 4400K and cool at 6000K
Do you think this is suitable as a key light? I'm looking for something small and compact for video conferences mostly and was considering something small like the Lume Cube Panel Go. However placed horizontally I think this would offer better distribution of light across the face. Or do you think a smaller square panel with soft diffuser in front is more suitable? I'm not sure though, any thoughts?
@@FellowFilmmaker Thanks, it looks like a nice light. Also some of your Amazon links for your gear have died. Probably reseller is long gone. Might be a good idea to put the name of the item beside the link as a backup so we can search for it in case link no longer works. :)
Great stuff Heather :) Looks an interesting product. Love that you are not giving into sponsorship. Ive been fighting against this on my channel for the last 4 years and its really helped build more subscribers but more importantly, you can live with yourself :)
I see the last update for the pavotube was in September, but I don't have it - mainly since my pavotube use a bit useless since the blue lights stopped working about 2-3 months after I got it.. But the mobile app is not a thing yet, at least to my knowledge. The ones I see are the old ones. Still haven't heard of the new one being out yet. Where are you finding the app, or what is the one you found called? I'm interested if you found something I don't know about yet
@@FellowFilmmaker Ok, it broke down. Have you contacted them about it? That is an issue worth knowing about. Perhaps you should do a short weekly live to talk about things that have happend to you products since the reviews? Well. You mentioned that they said they were going to add support to the app. That was many months ago so I googled it and saw a notice that the have made some updates to their app and the firmware. So I guess it may be about app support and thought I'd ask you (you are one of my top sources now) if it had been added to app support. It may or it may not... hard to tell.
I have talked to them, they said I should send it in to be fixed. I guess I couldn't be bothered since I own other things. It still works in CCT mode, so I use it for that. I took it apart myself to see if I could find a fix for it, but that resulted with nothing happening to change the issue. And that is a good idea, I'll have to consider it. Usually the product I get have been fine even months after using them, this one didn't for some reason. Probably because I dropped it a million times :P I did mention that yes, and I've been staying on top of it up until Jan. I haven't heard of the new one rolling out, I did some googling and such. Last I heard, in December I think, it was just getting pushed back further and further for a release date. So, really don't expect it to show up anytime soon. I can reach out again and see what I find out.
@@FellowFilmmaker Yes, I started to wonder if it is the lack of app support that has lead to this light popping up in sales recently. I considered getting one, but no app is a dealbreaker for me cause that sort of defeats the benetifs of beeing able to mount it anywhere. Hi Heather, been really enjoying your videos. You seem like an interesting person and your voice sounds good. I think you're gonna grow pretty fast on YT, but those faces you make on your thumbnails look just ridiculous. Keep up the good work... cheers.
@@FellowFilmmaker Figured as much. A lot of companies seem to do this trickery. Since you're here, question! Do you think one of these could light someone in white outside on a dark night enough to create a visible motion blur in a long exposure photo? Was thinking this would be good at say a five second exposure with flash firing on rear curtain. A kind of ghostly cemetery scene but found one reviewer saying they are very dim even at 100%.
I haven't tried something like that, so I can't say for sure. But to me it's relatively bright enough and if they are wearing white then I would think it should show up. If you think it's not enough maybe look into the Aputure F7, it's a (I believe) 12 watt light and yet still portable.

For sure! I love camping, so it's fun that they go hand in hand in some areas!
Light housing getting hot helps desipate heat to prevent the unit from overheating. Which is a good thing.
