Hello Clay Rachel, We offer several delicious roasts and we like to rotate through all of them. The coffee we offer can be found here: www.seattlecoffeegear.com/coffee-tea - Sarah
I haven't noticed a difference in channeling; have you tried the redistribution technique prior to filling the portafilter? That has seemed to have the biggest positive impact on Silvia shots IMHO. Not sure how your can test the OPV on these guys, sorry. - Kat
We don't recommend doing this process on a single boiler like the Silvia; as we repair a ton of these machines for boiler burn out, brewing and then steaming runs the risk of burning out the boiler. - Kat
Yeah, your 58mm tamper can't go to the bottom, but your coffee will expand during the brew process and there's not much to be done about that AFAIK - Kat
All of your videos are creating 2 super knowledgable baristas! They are wonderful for brand new Rancilio Silvia owners!! Thank you!! My boyfriend and I LOVE watching your videos!! :)
Since the techs haven't seen the machine, they could only give this general diagnosis / resolution: 'It seems like scale is stuck in the steam wand. This is why it is leaking, and why it is weaker steam. They might try descaling again, removing the steam tip this time. Also leaving the descale solution in the machine for a longer period of time.' Hope that helps! - Kat
We asked our main rep and they said they have no plans to upgrade / change the machine. Keep in mind that they are primarily a commercial manufacturer and the Silvia is not a primary focus for them. All of their R&D and manufacturing oomph goes into their commercial machines. - Kat
Yes - that's true, unless you use a euro or us curve tamper to give a little bit more of a curve to it and, therefore, the screw won't tear the puck. This was a change made to their machines awhile ago which I have hated because they used to be flush with the screen. - Kat
You need to have some knowledge of how electronics work, but the stand alone does come with instructions. We also sell them pre-PID'd (!) which extends the warranty to the PID as well, since installing your own generally voids any retailer's warranty. - Kat
Without hearing the sound and if this is something that only just started, it could be indicative of a leak that is occurring while under pressure during the heating process. But ... that's only a guess on the part of our tech, without the machine in front of him ;) - Kat
The boiler will just burn out, period. There's no 'getting there' or any way to track it other than it happening, as far as I know. - Kat
In my experience, yes; this is why aficionados of super cleanliness will do a water only backflush after each shot -- there's going to be some residue from the coffee's expansion. I can't really speak to your puck; if you're dialing it in so that your shot is extracting within that 20 - 30 window and the shots are tasting good, not really sure it matters if the coffee comes out easily, etc. - Kat
You could try weighing out different dosages to see how they affect the shot differently. If you're overfilling and not able to get the portafilter locked in, they the shot will definitely be adversely impacted. I know that some folks are concerned about the screw tearing the puck and it likely has an impact on the extraction rate, but there's not much you can do, sadly. - Kat
Thank you for your detailed reviews. informative, knowledgeable and helpful. Appreciate your time and effort.
You can get a PID on the machine when you purchase it from us, or you can purchase it later and install it yourself. If we install it, it's covered under the machine's warranty. - Kat
Of the two, I'd probably go with the Preciso as it has better grind consistency and you can also dial it in a bit more -- great for the Silvia. - Kat
It definitely can -- it's just about technique. With this machine, it will take some practice to get the milk right. - Kat
They have directions that come with it that will walk you through the installation, etc. I think you're going to get far more consistency if you add this on and it will take some of the guesswork out of your espresso prep. - Kat
I'm sorry :( we can't ship espresso machines out of the country. Good luck finding one! ~ sam
After you temp surf, you could wait about 10 / 20 seconds or so ... play with it a bit to see how your machine performs. Each will be a little bit different. - Kat
Yeah, but the 'fussy' is generally in reference to dialing in a grinder, in my experience. That's what most people are concerned about - Kat
Buy a Silvia in Seattle on your next trip to the US! It will be worth the trip for good espresso ~ sam
Since you have a PID, you'll able to see the temperature drop; I usually purge it until it's around 220 or so on the readout, as it will continue to drop a bit. - Kat
Sour is underextraction and so if the machine is too cool, yes that is a risk. - Kat
Thanks for sharing your experiences with the Silvia! They do, in fact, have the machine you're looking for -- it's called the Epoca ;) - Kat
Hi. There is a hole in the base of my Silvia V3. I was wondering if I could use that to somehow drain the (too shallow I think) tray? Then I wouldn't have to worry about overfilling the tray?
You could try this, why not? You'll need to drill a hole in the tray itself and come up with a way to siphon off the waste water. :) - Kat
You shouldn't smell this! But yes, you might want to remove the protective film - Kat
Believe that's an 8 oz - Kat
I wonder if you could review or give me your opinion on a Rancilio espresso machine L4 ? It is good, how effective is it? Thank you so much!
Yes - it's because the PID interface is now your on/off button. - Kat
I love the CC1, personally; also considered by folks jumping in for the first time is the Breville Infuser - Kat
Hahahaha ... yes, that's a good way to put it ...destructions! :D - Kat
Does the 2014 version do anything the pre 2014 did, better? I know the boiler has different connections but that could that just be a production thing?
Thanks....
No, same functionality all around. The only slight change is that the heating element is now SS, in an effort to resist boiler burn-out, which can be a big problem. but you can still get boiler burn-out, so it’s not fool-proof, and make sure to keep refilling your boiler after every time you steam by pulling water through the steam wand! - Miranda
Yup - that's what we install on the machine we sell PID'd - Kat
Yeah, the indent is kind of a design flaw IMHO - Kat
Wahooo!!! Great to hear that it's working well for you :D - Kat
I have a Silvia with Auber PID installed. Working fine but suddenly I found that the steam is not as "steady" and strong as it was the day before. its kind of strong then weak then strong then weak. the machine has no issue to get up to temp in time,so I dont think it is a boiler issue.I always run hot water when I am done to avoid burning the heat element. Any idea what should be done? I just descaled it a week ago using Dezcal. also the steam when i close the steam knob doesnt stop immediately
Hi kat!
I am two weeks further with my rancilio silvia, and for a about a week i am using a grinder, wich is set reallly fine, for espresso shots.
Here is my question, i want the crema to be thicker, there is some crema though, but i want it thicker.
Mabey use another beans? I am using arabica now,
I hope you can answer my question :),
Keep up the good work!!
Grtz from holland!
Crema is mostly about the coffee that you're using. We have a video on it called What is Crema? that you could check out for tips on how different coffees have crema. This was based on an article that's on our website, if you want to read it instead :) Hope that helps! - Kat
Nope - Kat
Comparing this with the breville dual boiler 920xl how does it match when it comes to milk steaming and brewing?
RLJSings While we are really impressed with the steaming power on the Silvia, we would say that the Breville has more power. The dedicated boiler really makes the whole brewing process seamless. :)
Do you carry the Silvia's with the new stainless boiler system? Or only the pre 2014 ones? I've watched most of your videos on Miss Silvia and haven't seen an update since they changed the V3 boiler.
Thanks!
Hello Madaline Walker, The Silvia we offer is the most up-to-date Silvia. www.seattlecoffeegear.com/rancilio-silvia-espresso-machine-version-3. ~ Sarah
Is it normal to hear loud "cracking/boiling" few seconds after the machine is on then it goes away and starts again when i press the steam button? Havent heard it before when I used very low PPM filtered water... Since I switched to high ppm bottled water this started happening..
I have a question; I just purchased a Silvia from your store and I'm looking forward to working with it. Thanks so much for your (1,000+) videos, by the way.
I was watching the first review of the new Silvia V3 from May 14, 2009, and Gail mentioned that there was a 3-hole tip for the steamer wand "as an option, after-market add-on that you can purchase". Now, it seems from the detail in this video of 2 years ago, that is not really a desirable upgrade.
I talked with someone there today, and she suggested I just wait until I receive the shipment, but I thought I might try this way to pose my question.
i am about to buy one of those but the a super question to decide which one i want to buy it im on this one the Rancio Silva V3 or the New Breville BES870XL its for commercial use for starter mini cyber caffe can you tell which one is the best for that use or anyone the can be used under 12000 dollars ? thanks ! in advance !
Hello Hector Rosa, Neither the Silvia or the Breville BES870XL are suitable for commercial use. For a very small volume cafe (just a few drinks per hour) I would recommend the Nuova Simonelli Oscar: www.seattlecoffeegear.com/nuova-simonelli-oscar-espresso-machine. For a small cafe where you plan on brewing approximately 20 - 30 drinks per hour I would recommend a Rancilio Epoca 1 or 2 group: www.seattlecoffeegear.com/rancilio-epoca-e-1-group-automatic-commercial-espresso-machine. I hope this helps! - Sarah
I purchased the Silvia with the PID from you guys about a year ago. It was my understanding that the PID measured the temperature from the outside of the boiler which is why the brew mode was set at the factory at 222 degrees. I notice on your Silvia videos your PID temperature is no higher than 205. Is there an accurate way for me to measure and recalculate my PID setting?
We just happened to have it set lower that day, It generally registers about 8-10 degrees above the temp of the water inside. You will want to experiment with the temperature that works best for you. Generally you want to start around 208-212. If you have a digital read thermometer, you can check the temp of the water at the brew head, but it will need to be instant read for the most accuracy. - Steven
I'm not sure I agree with you that this machine isn't "fussy". I'm on my second Silvia over the last 9 years (first one was a V1 that I purchased 2nd hand) and even being able to froth milk to proper texture is not as simple as just opening the steam valve once the light turns off (mine were also pidded which helps). The amount of steam pressure I can get out of this machine is enough to blast milk straight out of the pitcher, but it took a lot of trial and error and testing to be able to do this consistently. It's also extremely difficult to get consistent shots without a PID. I do enjoy your reviews though, so keep them up :), I just think that the Silvia is a finicky machine, but I think that's what draws me to it.
Glad you found it helpful! Thanks for watching. - Kat
Just purchased one of these for my small town coffee shop I am opening up in about a month. We aren't looking to sell constant specialty coffees, (maybe about 2 per hour type maximum type thing), and I am wondering if it harms the machine to leave it on all day to avoid waiting times for heat up?
It's not problem to leave it on. - Steven
Is there a reason to upgrade from the Silvia if you only make iced lattes? I was thinking you could brew more often maybe with a bigger boiler or heat exchanger? I'm thinking probably not worth the cost though unless I was makings lots and lots of shots.
We would agree with your logic Kevin053092. Since you're not steaming the milk, you don't have to wait for the machine to heat up to steam, then cool down to brew in order to brew. Probably not worth the upgrade unless you need/want to brew over and over!
Seattle Coffee Gear I have this machine at home but I cant produce a rich thick crema, I've tried changing beans, grind, tamp pressure, extraction time. and i still don't know how to fix it, do you have any ideas on the cause?
Hello BLT, The freshness of the bean will be crucial. The fresher the bean (meaning under 2 weeks from the roast date), the more crema you will get. From there, dial in your shots to the 20-30 second extraction window with your grind setting, tamp, and dosing, and be sure that everything is clean! If you haven’t backflushed or cleaned the brew head screen, portafilter, or filter baskets, then that residue can negatively impact your shot. Hope this helps! - Miranda
Hello, is this machine for commercial use? I've been planning to buy one for a small coffee shop I'm oppening with a short budget, how many shots and steams do you think the espresso machine can handle daily?
Juan Carlos Malfavaun The Silvia is not designed for commercial use. 2-3 shots a day is where you want to be with this machine. Our commercial webpage can help you find a machine that can fit your needs. Take a look here, and please ask any questions you might have! (www.seattlecoffeegear.com/cafe/choose-your-commercial-machine/espresso/choose-espresso)
We do have a good ratio of carpet! ;) - Kat
General question... what are your go-to coffee beans for this videos? What brand/roast do you recommend for good espresso shots?
Hey Guys, What Grinder would work best for the Silvia... I have about $300 budget... looking at the Baratza Preciso or the Breville smart grinder... I digg the functionality and look of the Brevelle but Im more concerned about grind and shot quality then i am about form and function... what grinder should i purchase... open to other recommendations too!
How's the preinfusion effectiveness on the PiD. Does it help with preventing channelling. Also with the OPV, what is the best way of testing it is max at 9 bar? As I see my non PID Silvia seems to pull very fast even when I have very fine grind from my Macap MXA. Thanks
Donno. If you don't have a PID, it's pretty fussy about temperature surfing. And if you steam, it's pretty fussy about having water put back into its boiler before you brew. Other than that, yeah, it's pretty much the same as any commercial-style espresso machine.
Watching this at work with the sound turned off and the auto-captions on ... too funny!
My favorite quotes so far: Hoosier Brest Boiler; Frothing Pitcher Massenet New York; Deleting your started deals gal; and Good ratio of Carpet.
Hello,
Please recommend an espresso machine that use 220v. I am planning on taking it to Asia for my in laws.
I have some trouble finding this in here, but i found some gastroback machines, are they good!? Or i should somehow manage to get Silvia!!!? My country is filled with horrible stuff! You can't find any good products here :D
From what I see Gastroback looks to be rebranded Breville, which are great. - Steven
Seattle Coffee Gear good, thanks
Would have loved to have got this for my 1st machine, but had a Classic. In reflection that would have been a nightmare since I was new to the semi-auto coffee system.
Now I would love this or a dual boiler system.
Whats involved with fitting a PID to a classic?
Are you talking about a Gaggia Classic, or an earlier model of the Silvia? I am not sure for the Gaggia, but we do sell PID's for all versions of the Silvia. - Steven
I meant the gaggia classic
Non-pressurized :) - Kat
Is the Silvia still the go to machine when starting out or is there something else that should be considered?
Hi guys,
Awesome videos! Always very informative and factual.
I just got my Silvia. Two questions.
1. What is the significance of the red dot on the group head?
2. When inserted, my portafilter does not reach a 90 degree angle from the machine. Well, it does, but it seems I'm putting a lot of pressure on it to get it there. Is this normal?
Cheers!
Hello MusicFromMoscow, The red dot is the ideal ending point for the portafilter, around perpendicular to the front of the machine. However, you’re really just looking for a snug fit, so when the machine is very new, it will typically not go all the way to the red dot, and as the machine continues to be used, the gasket will wear in, to the portafilter goes further and further to the right. Eventually, the portafilter will go so far to the right, past the dot, that you still can’t achieve a good seal, and get leaking over the sides of the portafilter. It is at this point that the gasket would need to be replaced, but typically will take anywhere from 6 months to 2 years before that happens. For now, you’re just looking for that snug fit, and while it will take some effort, you’re wanting the portafilter to be on tight enough that it won’t leak over the edges, but not have to crank on it. It may take a little bit of experimenting to find this right balance. - Miranda
nice review, thank you. I liked the look inside the machine, looks indeed very serviceable.
Amazing review as always! I've wanted this machine for a while now but now I really really am up to buy it. However, I live in Venezuela and have the money to buy it online and want to buy it with the PID installed. Is there any place you guys recommend me doing this? I can't find it through Amazon. Thanks!
hi there is there is a new silvia with a redesigned element? version 4 perhaps? if so can u do a vid on this in one of ur next vids
We have not heard of any new machine coming out, but if we get one we will definitely do a new video! - Steven
I have no experience of espresso machines at all or coffe but I want one. Should I buy a rocket, those really expensive machines or this one? I really, really want good quality of coffe and steaming the milk. Thick milk, not waterish...
Hello Calis krit! There are a few options that could work for you, but it is best if we can really understand how you will be using your machine. Give us a call at 866-372-4734 and we can help find the right machine for you!
I live in Sweden, a call woudn't be possible. I simply want a machine that I can brew some good coffe, cappucino etc without going to Starbucks or Espresso house for a good cup of coffe.
And a machine that my experience can develop so I can be my own barista at home. I won't have a business, I will just have it at home for me and my family! :)
Hej Calis krit! Well in that case I would probably guide you towards some of the more entry level machines. The Saeco Aroma would fit your needs and give you some great coffee without much experience. You can read more about that here: www.seattlecoffeegear.com/saeco-aroma-espresso-machine. If you are wanting to grow your barista skills something like the Breville Oracle could be an option while still giving you some automatic control while you hone your skills. You can read more about that machine here: www.seattlecoffeegear.com/breville-oracle-espresso-machine-bes980xl. The other machines you mentioned are great machines, but do take some time to learn to pull a great shot of espresso. I hope that helps! (Just an FYI, we are currently unable to ship internationally)
How do I see if the burner has burnt out or is getting there?
So, if instructions don't mention the boiler replenishment, they are really distructions?
:D
Does the Rancilio Silvia V3 come with a pressurized or non-pressurized portafilter?
When you heat up the steam, what what temperature on the PID do you usually start to steam the milk?
PS: I'm using the Hario mini slim to grind (I don't mind the sweat for now!! :P)
Hi gals! Got my silvia 2 weeks ago, so still trying to tame it! I have 2 questions:
When I'm dosing my double shot, if i even the dose flush with the edge of the basket (using my finger or a flat knife), even if I tamp pretty hard, the dose seem too much, as it presses hard against the group head. Sometimes I can't even lock the portafilter in. What could be my problem here? How should I dose/even my shots?
And also: does the protuberant screw on the shower screen compromise the puck integrity?
I have the same question but don't have a PID. Roughly how long should I be purging / waiting until I pour my shot? thanks.
by the way, precise, clear, informative videos. 10/10
Hi Gail
anyway. love your vids! great reviews! i am pretty much dead set on a rancilio silvia but before i pull the trigger i thought i would ask you if maybe there would be a better or alternative choice? i am more of an espresso drinker, and was wondering what machine you would recommend if the silvia wasnt around. something around same size under $1000. i think i would prefer a boiler and aside from the gaggia classic. thanks :)
Hello anarchist393, The Breville line would be one to consider if you are considering something other than the Silvia. The Breville Dual Boiler is slightly above the $1000 mark, but is well worth the extra money. Product information and our video can be found here: www.seattlecoffeegear.com/breville-dual-boiler-espresso-machine-bes920. ~ Sarah
shit, thats actually a nice machine
I've owned my Silvia for 6 months now and i'm very happy with it! I love the pure utilitatian functionality of it, it just does the job and is built to last! If they ever upgraded the machine, the improvments i'd like to see is a dual or heat exchange boiler, larger drip tray, burn proof wand and maybe a larger water tank or the option for direct plum, Overall the V3 is a great machine though! So good in fact, the Prime minister has one in his kitchen!
Hey guys. Is installing a PID difficult? I am buying my first machine (this one) and thinking about picking one up. Love the vids, thanks :)
Hi guys- once again, thanks for the great tidbits! I was wondering about PID install kits and what an 'average user' could get away with and still have a very decent, consistently brewed shot? Any suggestions for the V3 for a self install?
I can't really afford to go to the US though.
Not a lot on how to make good espresso.
oh Gramtastic, "I just piddled down there" made my morning! Ha!
What is next step from this, Rancilio Silvia..... ?
As far as price you can look at a Crossland CC1 or Breville Dual Boiler. Those machines are not necessarily better, because it is all dependent on your needs an desires. - Steven
Seattle Coffee Gear thanks Steven....
What ml cup did you make the latte in? 250ml?
When are we going to see a Silvia V4?
Great summary here of this particular machine. Thanks a lot!
Wildly informative!
Glad you think so farenhe1t! :)
Gail please explain each wire LOL
Pretty brutal job at a latte lol
thanks :)
