  • How to remove 6.6 Duramax glow plug including the "difficult" number 4 plug on driver side behind steering shaft.
    Tools:
7mm, 8mm, 12mm deep well socket, (2) 15mm wrenches, rope (or can use seatbelt) and anti-seize
    Instructions:
    Remove fender liners.
Remove glow straps using 7mm and 8mm.
Remove plugs using 12mm deep well socket.
For plug #4 behind steering shaft you must tie off steering wheel to prevent it from moving to avoid damage to clock spring in steering wheel which costs $300+.
Use 2 15mm wrenches to disconnect shaft. Slide the top part away from bottom and bottom shaft will drop giving you room.
Replace all glow plugs with applying anti-seize and the reassemble.
    Celebrate with a beer.

Thanks buddy! Mine had a lot more rust, but I soaked it with some PB Blaster and clamped some vise grips on the top piece and slowly tapped it up and off.

Hey man, I appreciate you taking the time letting me know that you like this or that it helped you!
I remember looking for this all over the Internet, and then realizing that if no one was gonna put it out there that I should .
My problem is, I’m not very good at editing, and it would take me too long to make decent videos of all the work that I actually do and it would actually slow down my progress on working on vehicles.
      Maybe one day when I retire. Working on a 94 C1500 w 350 currently!

Good video info. On mine the metal collar under the nut is crimped on there so you can’t turn that nut. Only the bolt holding nut stationary. The metal safety collar twisted on Mine and road up the side of the nut. Pushing the socket or wrench off of it. Pain in the ass. Had to hammer that collar piece down to get box and on it. After that I held it on one spot only turning the bolt and it came out fine then. Nut is worn. Need a new one. Torque if I recall for glow plug is 13 ft lbs and 18 Inch pounds for the small nut on the end by the wire. Nickel anti seize is a good idea on the threads of the glow plug. Good to 2400 degrees. My no 4 went 100k miles.

Alexander Monslow yeah I guess that works too. Haha I was surprised at the time I did this that I couldn’t find much info. Either way I’m glad you got it or good luck with your repairs.

Ive got a 2008 6.6 duramax 3500 and when you remove that bolt the stering shaft will not move up or down. There's like almost no play.

Neat solution! I got 8 no cost glow plugs with reman injectors last summer and figured I may as well put them in. You didnt mention why you replaced the GP's in this jarhead's (😀😀😀) ride.
btw, I got here from a link on the Duramax Forum.
    best

Sorry. The reason for the glowplug replacement was due to my buddy buying the truck with bad injectors and it ran like garbage. One of the glowplugs on the driver side even had the tip where the glow strap tightens down, break off due to corrosion when i simply touched it and plus the Diesel Logic kit that was purchased included EVERYTHING! So we figured get all the new parts in. She runs like a dream now.
Thanks for the view on this BTW. Have you done the work to yours yet?

Jay Starr , Yep, injectors last summer. Otherwise, all stock with 3rd set at 155k.
