The latest in ASDA is Cruzcampo Savilla. What does that suggest; brewed in Saville? NO; on the back it said brewed by Carlsberg here in UK, on Asda's website it states Heineken (same). Got extracts in it of malt and hops.
"Born in Sevilla under the heat of the Andalusian sun; the perfect, crisp refreshment. That was Cruzcampo back in 1904 and that is Cruzcampo now. Every beer that comes from our brewery is a joyful celebration of our city.
"Cruzcampo inspires you to embrace the Sevillian way. Because life is better when you are free to enjoy the moment. You don’t have to be Andalusian to enjoy the taste of Sevilla. With Cruzcampo, we will take you there."
What a load of row locks.
If I'm in M&S I'll have a look for this El Prat stuff (not the best of names for the British Market, but hey.)

The rumour about Madri is that it's just Coors Light with extra hop extract. Read an article online. On a side note, this Spanish lager is potentially a watered down version on Estrella Damm and not as good value as you might think as it costs the same as that beer. Same brewery in Barcelona.

It’s complicated further by the fact that even the Spanish brewed beers like Mahou or Estrella Damm brew weaker versions for the UK market then export them. You’ll find they’re both over 5% abv in Spain

    • @jonathantrice7614
      @jonathantrice7614 3 месяца назад

Since the government introduced variable tax bases on alcohol content, most price sensitive drinks have had to lower the alcohol content. Just go into a supermarket and check the lower priced big brand or own brand wines. Many have dropped by 2 -3% ABV.
Last year, there was a big increase in cider duty and retailers had to dump stock before the deadline. 6.6% at £1 per bottle to be replaced by 5% at £2.25 per bottle.

Couldn’t agree more Simon. I think it should be outlawed personally. From an ASA perspective it’s misleading. If these big brewers are selling ‘Spanish’ or ‘Italian’ beer, it should be brewed in said country. If they’re brewing in the UK, then it should be billed as Spanish or Italian ‘Style’. All their commercials are so misleading as they show these continental landscapes/scenes, with small (brewed in the UK) text at the bottom. Thankfully I’m clued up so know which ones to avoid and which ones truly are Spanish or Italian.

Hi Simon, love your channel. Just a quick point about a majority of the continetal beers brewed under licence in the UK, they are brewed with GLUCOSE SYRUP. As a diabetic this is very dangerous for me and a practice that the public should be more aware of. Breweries claim that all that the glucose is turned to alcohol. Apologies if you have disscussed this issue before.

I think they might be getting that from Damm as El Prat de llobregat is right by the airport in Barcelona. One thing I'd say about the other beers imported from Spain is they aren't the same beer. For example Estrella Damm in Spain is 5.4% and here 4.6% it really upsets me that so many beers are dropping their ABV for tax reasons. Great review though. I'll give it a try.

i like the M&S Spanish beer, also, i had the Belgium one last night and can recommend that over English stella. marketing, as we have discussed before is a very clever thing, you only need to look at the old Carlsberg rebranding, madri, id like to think that somewhere an M&S marketing chap is sat at his computer viewing all the beer related articles on RUclips, like your one, has come to realise that us British proper beer drinkers would rather have the authentic beer from the country its made in, hes then come up with the idea of a plain tin/bottle with only the country name as logo then small print about the brewery. as you say, the cost landed and on the shelf is a lot lower than the uk pap, no brainer.
love your videos and im constantly annoying my mates in the pub with my finger head descriptions.

A good workaround for some Spanish lagers to ensure you still get Spanish brewed and the correct ABV is to get the gluten free versions - San Miguel, Estrella Galicia and Daura Damm rather than Estrella Damm. All the GF versions are still 5.4% and taste much better. This issue also affects Italian lagers, with Moretti and Peroni suffering the same fate (GF Peroni is still brewed in Italy).

I like many people have been conned by the British breweries I bought a case of Kronenbourg 1664
only to find out it's brewed in Manchester by Heineken not Obernai (France)
I hate the way the writing on the bottles is in Spanish or German or french (Belgium)
But the beers are brewed in the UK it should clearly state on the front of the bottle brewed in the UK
Birra Moretti is a typical example even with advertising showing Italian people drinking it although it's brewed in Manchester by Heineken
Sadly you have to do a bit of homework but usually the German and Belgian beers are brewed in their native countries but even everyone's first taste of German beer Becks is now brewed in the UK
I have tried your recommendations before Paulineer wheat beer being one (excellent by the way so smooth) and I will be buying this when I visit Marks and Spencers later

I was amazed how many people came up to the bar and ordered a pint of Madri, the group next to me did seem to think they were back on holiday in Spain. I was drinking Sharps Atlantic at the time which in itself isn’t the beer it once was. Its just not about the purported image and then finding out that many beers don’t come from the countries that they imply, although I think its outrageous how they con people. The beers that imply that they are from, Spain, Italy, France or Germany just do not taste like the real thing. Ironiclally Camden brewery and Brewdog beers who make no such outrageous claims taste closer to real continental beers. Why is this important aside from the aspect of the con, two things, quality and taste, isn’t that what we expect when we hand over the bar £5 plus?

The only brewery in that area is Damn, who make Estrella - objectively the single worst lager in Spain. This beer is 0.1% lower than Estrella. I'll reserve judgement until i try it. Estrella Galicia is the best of a bad bunch, and the actual Mallorca Hoppy Lager (not the 3.4% stuff we get here) is great for the price (60p for 330ml cans and a proper percentage over there, too).

@@nigelwatson2750 I wouldn’t, I’d be dreadful, but if I was a self-proclaimed expert at anything then I’d at least do a couple of minutes research rather than expose my lazy ignorance.
The review would have had an entirely different spin if he knew it was from Estrella, he may have even done a comparison to the beer that he’d already got out and put on his bar and actually picked up during the review.
But he didn’t because he’d not even done less than 10 seconds of research. If he wants to be taken seriously then he should stop taking his viewers for mugs.

Because I can earn more money doing things that don't rot my body.
Look, all I'm saying is that if Simon wants to be the place on youtube where people come for beer reviews then he could at least show his audience a bit of respect by doing even a basic amount of research. He held a bottle of Estrella Damm in this review and was totally obvious that it came out of the same building as the beer he was reviewing! Less than a minute on google would have told him that and would have changed his review.
