  • A desert may seem like a barren wasteland at first glance, but in D&D that’s not the case! I’ve got DMs covered with 10 of my favorite random encounters for deserts.

Me ten minutes ago: man, I have no idea how to flesh out this desert setting, and the game is tomorrow!
Me now: OKAY WE’RE GONNA NEED AN EXTRA SESSION TO FIT ALL THESE IDEAS IN

I used the horse stampede/flash flood encounter on my 1st lvl party and it was the highlight of the session, thank you!

Genie: "Just put down your weapons, you won't be needing those no more."
Humanoids: "Actually we are by nature useless without them."

    Spinning off from these ideas:
Snakes on a body - the body might also have a plot hook of some kind, maybe a map or message, or even just something mundanely useful like a full waterskin. You might want to swap for something less vulnerable to ranged attacks than snakes so the players can't just stand off and kill the obstacle safely. Maybe what appear to be just a few visible scorpions with more buried in the sand if they approach, or concealed within the cloak. Could do the same with snakes as well, of course.
Animal watering hole - what if some or all the animals are atypical for the region, perhaps some critter more commonly found below ground that's come out for water? The players might follow them back to their lair, discovering a lost and buried city, underground tomb, or underdark.
Pretty birdies - exotic bird plumage is worth big money to the right buyers - but those buyers likely won't be found anywhere near their native territory. Might be worth something to natives as trade goods too, or perhaps the locals use them (and only them) as currency?
Stampede/flash flood - definitely want to consider the difficulty of climbing those steep dunes beforehand, and the danger of triggering a slide if they do try to climb out. A good survival check should warn the party that the cracked earth path might be a channel for flash floods, and is certainly likely to attract hunting animals and act as a game trail of sorts. Avoiding the path might be possible but very slow as the PCs are forced to labor up[ and down sand dunes instead.
Spires in the sand - oh, there's that buried city, maybe they followed some animals back to it earlier.
Snakes, why did it have to be snakes - realistically, constrictors big enough to endanger a conscious human are only found in very rich biomes like jungles or swamps, not deserts. You could use venomous snakes instead - or maybe your setting has ambush-hunting sand contrictors, or an underdark fungus jungle that these snakes have adapted to live in.
Phase spiders - even if there's no loot around, critters with odd magical powers like phase spider are often hunted for organs or blood or venom, any of which might be used by alchemists or magicians. Maybe an arcana check to know what might be worthwhile and an animal-lore related skill check to harvest things properly?
Air elementals - perhaps the terms of their binding lets players avoid a fight by performing a prayer to the elemental deities involved, or singing the right song or playing a wind instrument. How's that bardic lore check going? They're also bound elementals, so unable to pursue if the players retreat far enough from the shrine. You'll want to give them an inaccessible hidey-hole (maybe inside hollow pillars that are open at the top) they can retreat into if the players decide to try to stand off and snipe at them after retreating.
Purple worm - first player to make a Dune reference gets swallowed whole.
Djinn - maybe the players ran into that air shrine earlier and learned something that might convince Blue Boy to leave them in peace or even assist them with their desert crossing? Name dropping a air elemental ruler or claiming to be on a mission from them could work with a good bluff check. O r maybe there was an empty magical lamp on that snake covered corpse and they can try intimidating him with it even if they have no idea how to use it? Or maybe during the fight he cuts open one of those big bales of feathers they were lugging around, realizes what happened to all his pretty pets, and it's murdering time for the PCs. Or maybe the party agrees to serve him and you can have them spend ten years in his palace, earn their freedom, and get released with parting gifts for being good sports - and discover that time passes differently in his pocket dimension and only a night and a day have passed outside. Very 1001 Nights, that.
    Well, that was fun.
