    Loved this.. I'm new to the Leica ecosystem but I'm loving it so far. I have a classic M9 Monochrom that I bought off a family friend for an absolute bargain. I'm expecting my Q2 tomorrow, having borrowed one for a couple of weeks. I expect that 5 years from now, I will still be enamoured with it. Well done to the RDF team for these deep-dive presentations, they're always so helpful. I loved the one on the history of the Monochrom as well. Cheers!

    38:20 The subway Train trick is clever. Taking Q photos whilst linked to your mobile phone. However, many people do that with their cam phones. They make out they are texting but they are shooting the person in front of them. :) That is...until the screen reflection is spotted in the widow behind them!! :)

    • @RedDotForum
      @RedDotForum  4 года назад +1

      Absolutely, people do this with their phones all the time. They just don't have a full frame 47MP sensor in their phones with a top-notch 28mm f/1.7 Leica lens bolted on the front...

    The Q-P has a sturdier on/off switch and I think the exposure compensation dial is slightly different too.

    • @RedDotForum
      @RedDotForum  4 года назад +1

      Yes, the On/Off switch and shutter button were redesigned from the original Q. This new design is also used on the Q2. The thumb dial is the same though. I'm sold on the Leica Q2 and really appreciate this video; seems to truly be a workhorse do just about everything pretty damn well kind of camera. From what I can tell if you had to choose one single camera there would be no better one to carry than the Q2.
    You guys gave a lot of really great specific info! Thank you for sharing those Lightroom Presets, I'm excited to try them out. That's such a cool hack being able to take photos using a phone and having the camera just hanging/sitting there. Seems like a great way to take group family photos as well without having to run to get in the shot and having to beat the timer.

    • @RedDotForum
      @RedDotForum  4 года назад +2

      Glad you found it useful. Yes, the Q2 is really flexible as a do-everything workhorse. Number one group photo tip is this: use the camera's interval shooting mode. Set it to 20 shots or so, with a 10 second delay and 2 second interval. Press the shutter button, run into the shot, then smile for the next 40 seconds while the camera fires off a picture every 2 seconds. Do a wild and crazy pose. Make some funny faces. Basically, you turn the camera into a photo booth and don't have run back and forth.

    Hi Guys, great video. Unfortunately UK time is 1:00 am so not too easy to watch live 😁. If you are able to answer this I would be interested. I understand the OIS system gives about 3 to 4 stops of benefit but only below 1/60th. Thus with OIS working, a speed of 1/60 would be equivalent to 1/500th? However, if the camera is indicating say 1/100th then the OIS do not kick in? In which case there may be more camera shake at 1/125th (or 1/250th) , than 1/60th? Does this make sense? Thanks, Peter

    Great stuff guys, RAD initiative! I just went straight in and bought the rubber lens hood - one quick question - I swobbed an x-pro 2 out to get the Q2 best decision ever! The only tiny little thing I'm missing would be the possibility to double expose do you know whether we will see this feature in a future firmware update.

    • @RedDotForum
      @RedDotForum  4 года назад +1

      I doubt you'll see this added in firmware. No other Leica digital camera offers double exposure capabilty. And really, with Photoshop, you'll have much more granular and precise control for combining two different shots rather than doing so in camera.

      Yes, you actually covered and explained everything in a very effective and concise manner. But, it would be great to do a practical demonstration with the Q2 and SL2. I have recently, purchased my first Q2 and I very pleased with the camera. I have been taking an opportunity to familiarise myself with handling the camera when shooting in Macro Mode.
      But, in real life I have missed my focus a couple of times. So, when explained the best workflow to shoot in Macro it all made sense. Obviously, I made mistakes and the method and recommendations all made sense.

    this is more a question than a comment. I use three cameras: a large medium format, a Nikon D850 as an all purpose Dslr (which I have been tempted seriously to exchange for an Sl2, cost being the major barrier) and a Q which I use for scouting and every time I don't want to give the impression of being a professional photographer. It took me a while to get used to the 28, but it is the camera I have used most ever. I love the thing. I have thought often about the Q2 and realize the crop advantage of the 47 MP. But given the cost, what would it be the killer reason to upgrade, apart from the resolution?

      Also - the Q2 shares the same battery with the SL and the SL2, making it a great companion. Same UI and menu system as the SL2. Very similar sensor makes for seamless two camera shoooting.
      I'd certainly recommend giving the SL2 a go. The image quality and camera functionality are simply outstanding. SL lenses are referrence class, but the SL can accept a wide range of lens options via adapters, including Nikon E lenses like the 24-70 f/2.8, possibly making a transition a bit easier on the wallet. Although, you would eventually want the SL 24-90 as it is probably the best normal range zoom ever made, rivaling Leica prime lens quality at every focal length setting.

    The Q2 needs a selfie screen option. Kind of like the M10/M240 attachable EVF but a small screen instead (can be self powered, like a phone) more for framing purposes. And a hardware bluetooth trigger option (like the BR-E1 from Canon). The Q2 is an excellent personal documentation camera so why not have the option to include the person documenting? The Fotos app is nice but not as fast and reliable as a hardwired connection. Sold my Q instead for an EOS-R with the RF35mmf1.8 macro with the BR-E1 remote. Kept my M240 and M10 though.

    • @RedDotForum

      Yeah, with no external video connections on the Q2, this would be tough. My recommendation would be to use a hotshoe mounted phone holder and run the FOTOS app so you can see the live video feed as a selfie screen.

    • @RedDotForum
      @RedDotForum  4 года назад +1

      It really depends on your hands and what is most comfortable for you. With both a grip and Thumbs Up, the camera feels extremely secure. With just the Thumbs Up, it sits more comfortably in the hand, as it reduces the need to press into the front of the camera with yoru fingers. Yet, there are tons of Q users who are just fine without any addtional grip or thumb support. You could also order the camera with the Thumbs Up and grip and try for yourself. If you don't like, simply return.

    I appreciate the various crop options but really have to ask if this is really a genuine option or more a fix(excuse) by Leica to users who purchase the q2 and become frustrated with 28mm focal length. It’s the same as the x100v. If you purchase a fixed focal length camera you have to commit. Cropping to 75mm on a camera of this calibre is just silly. Fixed focal length cameras today are for a very small niche group. I purchased an XPro model because I wanted maximum flexibility and usability. The q2 is a gorgeous looking camera but hugely limited. If looking to purchase don’t kid yourself that you’ll be fine with the cropped options. They are not genuine like having a 35,50 and 75mm.

    @matte-d349 4 года назад

    Great video! Thanks for keeping me entertained during these times. Leaned a few things about my new Q2.
    Minor nit to pick... at some point David mentions the reproduction ratio of the Q lens in macro mode depending on which crop mode is selected. A lens's reproduction ratio is completely independent of sensor size (and therefore crop mode as well). If you think of a 1:1 lens shooting a penny, and the penny is therefore the same physical size on the sensor as it is in front of the lens, then it doesn't matter if the sensor/film is M4/3, APSC, 645, or 8x10... the penny is always the same size (and therefore the reproduction ratio), it is only the cropping that changes.

    • @RedDotForum
      @RedDotForum  4 года назад +1

      You are absoulutely correct on the technicality of reproduction ratio. The penny example is a classic one that we used back in the film days. Perhaps a better way to phrase this would have been "equivalent reproduction ratio" or "just subject magnification."

    • @RedDotForum
      @RedDotForum  4 года назад

      The standard profiles for the Q2 in Lightroom are Adobe Color, Adobe Landscape, Adobe Portrait, Adobe Standard, Adobe Vivid and Adobe Monochrome. For general use, Adobe Standard is usually the best starting point.

    • @brycespivey
      @brycespivey 4 года назад

      @@RedDotForum That is definitely not true and terrible advice. Color profiles for the Leica Q2 are "Standard, Vivid, Natural, Monochrome and Monochrome HC". Color profiles provided by each camera manufacturer are incredibly important when discussing the color science of a camera. It's a critical stage when interpreting the unique look of every professional camera. It's how the camera manufacturers want you to interpret their image. The Adobe profiles are VERY different and shouldn't be compared to the native ones created by Leica. Just like you shouldn't compare the Adobe color profiles to Fujifilm color profiles. That's like talking to a Fujifilm X-T4 owner and telling them they can't edit RAW photos using one of their film simulation modes... and that they should use one of the Adobe color profiles instead. Bad advice.
      My goal is to edit DNG Leica Q2 files in Lightroom using 'Natural' (native Leica color profile). I like to start with a relatively flat look.

    There was a time photogs were shooting w Kodachrome 25 and had to make it work. These are fast little cameras. Grab the shot and keep shooting. Be well. #M7(.58) #Leica_M-E #Leica_QP #35CronBP #21mmAsph others.. Be well.

    Its such a pity that Panasonic does not get much recognition for making such a good camera.

    I owned the q and bought the q2. My first 'q' was straight, no distortion. I am struggling with the Q2. Perhaps I need to update the firmware? Anyone else noticed this?

    • @RedDotForum

      The lens performance should be identical between the Q and Q2. Can you give any more info on what you're seeing?

    • @NickGuttridge

      @@RedDotForum I think it is to do with software. I have just updated to V2 with the Q2. So hopefully this should resolve matters. I certainly had problems with distortion before. Never experienced this with the original Q. The DNG file isn't a pure raw file. So I am hoping that they have improved the digital correction.

    Sony rx1 came out 2 years before the Leica X.

      The Leica X1 was announced in late 2009. The Sony RX1 was relased in early 2013, over three years later.

    GREAT INFORMATION! but its not a shame to shoot the videos by sony or canon. The auto focus is horrible.

      We are shooting our close-ups with a 280mm lens, wide open, and moving the camera around via remote control motorized motion control. And shooting inadament largely black objects. So yeah, sometimes, the AF might need a little help. On our wide shot at around 60mm, the Face and Body iAF works seemlessly.

    Don't let the title of the video deceive you... it's a video about the Leica Q2. These guys treat Leica Q users as second class Leicaland citizens... they must be Canadians.
