I've been watching your channel for quite some time now and I want to say thank you for not plastering your logo over the top of these films. So many channels to this like Movieholic and its quite distracting. You do a fine job bringing this fine old movies to us. It's very much appreciated.
Short and sweet. Goodness me, this old film is 90 years old and still being watched and enjoyed. The actors/actresses could never have known. Such a pity. Regards to all old black and white movie lovers from an 88 year old Englishman who grew up regularly visiting the Odeon and Granada cinemas in Epsom, Surrey, England, way back in the 1940s. 25:51 Lets see now. A big mansion, it's night, a murder, a thunder storm, the electricity is out, and the phone is inop. The only thing missing is the bridge has been washed out and help cant get to them. But I am still watching the movie. Maybe the bridge will get washed out yet. Lets go back to the movie and see.
I was much surprised at seeing this movie. It is 'Based Upon' the first English detective novel that was first serialized by the author, Wilkie Collins (one-time cohort of Charles Dickens) in 1868, and then into book form. One can still obtain reprints from vendors such as B&N. It is 500+ pages not to mention a preface and bibliography. I have only begun the movie but not unlike many movies 'based upon a book,' it likely bears little resemblance to the novel itself. The original book can be a tedious read but I found it worth it.
Thank you for uploading this absolutely spiffy movie. It was entertaining, good story line a real 'who dunit'. I feel old in saying this but respect is due. This movie had no swearing, sex scenes, shooting etc. I'm not saying these shouldn't be in a movie but when it's called for. This movie was a treat & I really enjoyed it. Thank you😁 😁
Am I the only one amazed that the story could be told from plot origin to completion in under 50 minutes? They couldn't do something like this now to save their lives. This is WAY different than a short film.
Have you ever noticed in most of these older mysteries there always has to be the guy with a turban on his head & they always have to boil water, no matter what the injury or disease, the water pot goes on the stove! lol Love all these tho, just an observation.
@Victoria Taylor: The man with the turban says that he has changed his faith to Christianity, but still he wears turban. Isn't it contradiction in terms. Turban signifies the Panjabi faith of Guru Nanak, and whoever believes in the faith dons the turban, even being non-believer in any faith, and an atheist also wears Turban as a sign of identity. Here he says...."because he has adopted the Christian faith." Is it a sign of a ploy, to hide his identity? After all, he is a Panjabi. I will have to consult the book what it says about the character. I did not read the book yet though it is in my possession since long. Anybody will reply to it? I have more to add later, may be in a separate entry.
@@drmrinalkantinath4336 The Yandoo character is not from the book. The book contains three Indian jugglers, who murder the thief (a YEAR after the Moonstone is stolen) and return the gem to India.
Has this movie been shortened? They set up the mystery just fine and then it seems like all the suspense of "whodunnit" has been cut out. I never expect movies to be exactly like the book, but that was the best part, trying to figure out from all the interesting characters who was guilty of taking the stone and then being surprised by the solution. They hardly spent any time on Anne being upset at Frank, too bad, it would have built the suspense and made the ending even more meaningful. Update: I looked it up, yes, the movie studio tried to cram this massive story into a limited running time. What a missed opportunity, even 15 minutes more storytelling time would have made such a big difference!
Wow, this is a VERY altered and abbreviated version of Collins's novel (then again, this IS a Monogram cheapie, and the book is 500 pages). In the novel, the maid Roseanna drowns herself because she's in love with Franklyn but he doesn't return her affection. The three Indian jugglers from the novel (who murder the thief a YEAR after the Moonstone is stolen) have been combined into this Yandoo character, who is not from the book. The von Lucker character is also not from the book. The Verinders' head servant, Betteredge, has been changed into a woman, Rachel Verinder's name has been changed to Ann for some reason, and several side characters have been completely dropped.
I've heard that from several other people as well. Another stark example is 'The Quiller Memorandum'. The book makes fascinating reading as a study in the psychology of spies in Europe. The movie, however, is an unrecognizable departure from the original story.
Yes, I think it is the longest mystery written in the English language. Also he set the template, "red herring " with a back story, amateur detective. The only time I read it, it went on and on, but could not put it down. I seem to recall, Asian Acrobats being in the town, and the stone ends up??? All you amateur detectives see if you got it figured out, maybe read the story.
A nice cup of coffee,a glass of milk, hot or cold and a sipping glass of snopps(any flavor peach or apple or a plain shot of desarono)in my cosy lounched chair dark house awful thunder and rain outside,my main squeeze and bible.this would be as close to heaven on earth as one could ever get.........nuff said, let the church say amen, amen and amen.
I can REALLY do without that dog barking at 4:23. That's been over-used in to many movies already. The spooky house can provide the right atmosphere without that dog.
Utterly preposterous & silly, but cute! No piles of bodies draped on everything...except the guests came so thick & fast for a bit, the house keeper might stack 'em up!
What should have happend at the end is the girl should have given the stone back to India for a small reward of a £1000 seen as it was stolen! Where were the morals to this film, 99% of films have a moral point to them one way or another.
😆..A Great depiction of an Era and English Society Mentality of Its time, that gave the World the Munich Conference and assisted in the Birth of WWII.....nifty 'who dunnit, though'.

Never, these movies are priceless
It is estimated that half of the movies made from the time have been lost.

Great old movie. Acting weak in some spots but it doesn't distract from the overall storyline. Better than most movies of today!
A breath of fresh air in troubled times 👍
brilliant cool story. so cool to be able to see these shows i figgered to be lost forever. got a lot of catching up to do. all those missed greats
I just love the the dark atmosphere in all these vintage movies.

Oh, it's wonderful. There was an audiobook, on youtube.
I read and loved the book years ago!
A lot of exciting things happen in those old dark houses ❤❤ like the way they show the main cast in a portrait form

Monogram’s 1934 “Monogram Pictures” looks so awesome!!
Very Art Deco.
The doctor was Olaf Hytten, who played Captain MacIntosh in "Sherlock Holmes Faces Death" starring Basil Rathbone.

"Out in the wilds of Yorkshire" careful of all them sheep !
Amazing to see such movie
I got a kick out of The housekeeper she was a hoot very satisfactory mystery
The old lady was Elspeth Dudgeon. She played the old man in the bed in The Old Dark House. She was billed as John Dudgeon.

A very silly film, LOVED IT!

it was the fastest way to sterilize instrument, well except for Tubas so they just played them as they were.
That was a good one. 😂 I needed a laugh. Thanks

I wanted to see this , after seeing a remake in color. Wish I could remaster the audio with a Dolby noise reduction to filter out the hiss.

You'll be fuzzy too, when you get to be that old.
Poor Wilkie Collins, the author of the book The Moonstone", must be spinning in his grave. This is nothing like his incredible book. Cringeworthy!!!
almost none of it, is true to the book
