- Looking for an alternative to the venerable Gibson Les Paul? The Fender Special Edition Custom Telecaster FMT HH might be just what you're looking for... but is it the flawless tone machine it claims to be? Stay tuned to find out!
I have a 2006 Crimson red Korean FMT HH that I have owned for about 12 years now. I play this guitar every morning and actually I like it better than my Les Paul. It does the same job and it's lighter.
I just got my 2nd one a few weeks ago. I also own the BlackBerry red sunburst and now the amber. It's soooooo versatile!! Great for dynamics... and everything else.
I particularly like the set neck design. I wish Fender would do more of them.
@@geartalk8711 yes, the neck is super smooth for solo work. Funny thing is I'm typically not a fan of Fender as it is (lots of reasons)... but this 'Cort-Fender' (as I sometimes refer to it) is the perfect guitar. I do a lot of dynamic playing, and I use every pickup selector location, push/pull switch, and volume & tone knobs constantly. It's right down my alley for sure. :) My first one caught my eye while attempting to buy a Schecter Omen Elite. The mahogany body and Duncan's sold me instantly.
@@geartalk8711 wondering if they'll ever do one in dark blue. =)
Gorgeous instrument. Superbly made!
Don’t be fooled by the price. The specs on this fender are going after Gibson. It’s in a whole other league than the epiphones. It was made in Indonesia. If fender built it in USA with same specs in would be around $2500
Thanks for the awesome review. I just oicked one up used at a local music store myself. And very happy I did. Despite the high price point all the details, sound, playability make it an absolutely wicked guitar!
I bought one for my son 7 years ago.. I paid 500$ Canadian for it used, and it has the rosewood neck! It plays like a dream.. I really like the bound neck as my other guitars are a Les paul and an SG. Easy to see in my older years!! lol
That headstock is gorgeous
I just bought one of the OG versions of this guitar. It was made in Korea. I think it has a rosewood fretboard. It’s loaded with Seymour Duncan phat cat p90’s. Digging it so far!
Set it bolt on neck on the OG ones?
@@thezeek2745 It's a set neck. I've got a 2004 Korean-made version. Mine came with Dimarzio Air Norton and Tone Zone (bridge) pickups. I paid $399.99 from Musician's Friend.
I got mine years ago from a friend for $400 at that time they were selling retail at $699, they later went to $799, $899 and currently $999.
Just introduced myself to one dressed in red 💃 cool vid’
This guitar is right up there with my Gibson for sure no doubt 💯 I love them both so much! I find myself picking my Fender up probably more often then my Les Paul which is crazy
This is a beautiful sexy guitar that I would be interested in as an alternative to Les Paul as well as most other similar Fenders, at an attainable price range for me if I save up. I love the amber flame top too. Probably a veneer, but no problem there. FYI, I have several Epi Specials including a P90, an old Schecter PT Saturn ('super Tele' HH coil-tap very comparable to this Fender), a Squier Mustang and a Les Paul Studio w/coil splits. Frankly four knobs on the LP don't help me that much- I tend to play mostly on the bridge p/u, sometimes on the neck p/u, and rarely combined in which case a fixed 50/50 blend from two control knobs is not a real limitation or drawback. The guitar in your examination today is speaking to me at my level of the market. Enjoyed, love your channel and hope to see it continue to grow. Thanks!
I have an 09 version with the spalted maple finish + made in Korea, and its my favourite guitar. It's not us made but that really doesn't matter, it's a great guitar, the pups are are a nice combo and its a rock machine and really versatile for gigging with. YOu can pick them up on the used market for a decent price, but tuners definitely need an upgrade. Really light too for gigging. The review is really spot on I would say and you won''t regret it if you go for one.
@@jemahl123 'preciate that! I'll be on the lookout. Still love my LP and its cousins. For some reason I never got turned on by strats although I respect them, but Teles just seem like a different animal and these super Teles turn me on.
@@markpell8979 I know everyone compares it to an LP but it feels more like an SG in the hand - neck is thin and fast though, like a ibanez - really it is its own beast. Great guitar but prices have gone silly since the pandemic.
It’s a veneer but nonetheless is absolutely beautiful. Definitely an awesome guitar and I think Fender could really do more “outside the box” guitars.
Definitely an awesome piece of kit. I love the weight and the neck carve.
These are Seymour Duncans and not only SD design made in Asia.
Correct - they would say Seymour Duncan designed and not their premier name brand! Just getting into teles and this is the most badass - and still making it!
The big bonus of a telecaster is the durability if a maple neck. This model has a more fragile mahogany neck. Without the angled headstock it will probably survive a careless owner.

I have the cherry burst. It's the perfect guitar for me.
They are awesome guitars. Fender really hit on a great combination of features.
It’s got a lot of different sounds. I got one and really enjoy it. My favorite guitar is still my ltd SE-1000 deluxe, though. Way better metal guitar. This one can play some good thrash sounds and classic rock, though. And it’s easy to play, light weight, and just sexy really
Very helpful review, thanks.
Great review!
I wish Fender issued this model with an ebony fretboard too. Or at least a darker rosewood fretboard.
I was thinking about getting one of these. The price was around $700 and now they are going for $1,000. Maybe I'll find a used one for a reasonable price.
Yeah the prices have really skyrocketed. It’s crazy!
Can you still get the classic Tele sound out of it, or do you really need a standard Tele to get that?
TBH I would return it over that fretboard, but I'm picky. That said, I'm considering buying this later this week.
I have one in crimson. I love it. It's my go to guitar
Man, here in Brazil we find this guitar with Fender Humbucking pickups. I mean some guitars don't come with Seymour Duncan. Have you ever seen a Fender FMT with different pickups where you are?
I have one of these - in the gorgeous amber. They are FAR more an SG than a Les Paul - not too many light weight set neck dual humbucker electric guitars...
To each their own, but I hate the LP 2V2T especially when 1V is all the way down...
Is the flame top a veneer over the mahogany body or a veneer over a maple cap?
Anyone ever get back to you on this ?
I have one I picked up from the stratosphere, and put Slash signature Seymour Duncan's in.
I have decided over some time (years) it just dosen't get it for me. I have no idea why, but I'm thinking of stripping it to bare wood and finding out the answer to this question.
Mines Indonesia made. Mahogany set neck. I just worked on a client's FMT with factory pickups noticed two things. One maple set neck, and two the "pearly gates" is perhaps the worst sounding pickup I've ever heard.I must hear a real version of this pickup before making a final judgment. And believe me, I'm the king of cheapo pickups. I have a lot of experience with pickups of all sorts. I'm positive that the best sounding pickup as of late is the dimarzio dp152 super 3. If that pickup dosen't make me love this guitar, I'm dumping it as soon as possible.
Cool guitars...I like them but I'd like to see Fender offer it with an ebony fingerboard, 25" scale !! and high quality American humbuckers. And a Bigsby tailpiece factory installed. I'd buy one for sure if offered in orange.
It is a 25.5 inch scale. Replace pick ups with emgs 81/85tw to retain the stock coil tap function. Install the bridge yourself.
Deal with the color.
Boom you just saved yourself 1500 bucks on the price you’d pay for that custom build
Mexico is for all practical purposes 'overseas'. insofar as MIMs are not made in the USA.
The Fender Mexico factory is like half an hour drive from CA lol

In the winter time' it's colder on one side of the door take the other.
@@BryanClark-gk6ie I’ve played MIM and MIA and it’s not that different. The only huge difference I see in modern guitars is MIJ is the smoothest. But it’s so smooth and the action can go so low, for some styles, I don’t like them. They’re not rockin but they’re elegant and very nice
@@Augrills
If you don't like them because they go so low then why not raise the saddles up or is there something to do with the truss rod or the nut too high?
On the fmt I have' the neck is flexible like rubber. I've had it a little over 5 years so the wood should be dried out' it bends forwards and backwards like a piece of thick rubber so bad it's about impossible to play' sharp flat sharp flat and it doesn't take that much pressure to make the strings hit the frets and the action is not that low and the neck has plenty of forwards bow. 10 gauge strings standard 440.
@@BryanClark-gk6ie yeah, you could raise the action. I don’t know how to explain it, but that’s how it feels like the MIJ guitars “want” to be, though.
Your first chords. Not in tune.
It’s more PRS than Les Paul
Squire makes a better version and it's beautiful for 185 dollars
No it's not a better one just cheap but not better
Why does your audio sound weird? I thought you were a gear guy? Strange. Annoying enough I'm done with the video.
They are coil splits not taps...and it is Amber not yellow.
hola mucho bla bla bla bla......y poco sound ...???
Your audio sounds terrible
Doubling echo, very short slapback delay 🎉
Very bad playing :/
