    Appointing Judges and disolving the parliment is quite a big deal actually.

      The don't actually appoint judges and dissolve parliament. They do it on the advice of the Chancellor/Cabinet. According to Article 58 of the German constitution, the decrees, and directives of the president require the countersignature of the chancellor or the corresponding federal minister in charge of the respective field of politics. The German president theoretically has really powerful reserve powers like vetoing legislation by not signing it but in reality they are rarely used. I believe the last time this happened was in 2006 by Horst Kohler.

      He is a sort of a German „Queen“. An old, anti-democratic position of power.
      Some say his role is to appeal to a greater morale and be above/outside of the political system - which allows him to speak about things the politics doesn’t want to.
      However his moral point is just assumed and our democracy does not specify his value.

    • @JayJay5244

      No the Queen is much more powerful. She is the commander-in-chief of the armed forces and has more duties than the German president. She also is above the law and doesn’t have to pay taxes. She could dissolve parliament at any moment and she could refuse to enforce laws.
      Of course she chooses not to exercise those powers and has the PM do everything in her name. But theoretically those powers are there.

      German chancellor is the strongest political office in the country but ceremonially he is lower than the president because president is the head of state while chancellor is head of government .
      Head of state is considered to be higher than head of government even if the latter has more political power than the former . In a similar way British Queen is considered higher than the British pm and the Indian President is considered higher than the Indian PM.

      The president in Germany is envisioned as a handbrake - although all the laws are passed by the Bundestag, the president has the power to veto (and has done so in the past) laws which he considers to be unconstitutional. Ceremonial presidents are the dumbest thing ever. At least ceremonial monarchs are kinda famous. @Ali-bu6lo 2 года назад

      @@robharris8844U No, I didn't say that. First of all, I didn't mention Germany specifically,but parliamentary republics in general. Second of all, Germany had many small and big monarchies before the end of world war I, and then there are monarchs form other parts of Europe. The German king could really be the current claimant to the former Grand Dutchy of Mecklenburg or the Prince of Liechtenstein for all I care. Also I mentioned two equally great options: Abolishment of the useless ceremonial office and having the PM or Chancellor be the ceremonial head of state as well (the position has no power so it doesn't matter) or make the useless president for life so at least they can be a symbol. In conclusion: I'm saying having a ceremonial president who only remains in office for some years makes no sense to me.

    • @robharris8844U
      @robharris8844U 2 года назад +1

      @@Ali-bu6lo Well it maybe it is a copy of Constitutional monarchy. In the UK for instance it means you have a head of State higher than the elected PM, which I like, because it means the PM never has overall power and is like a safety sobering for pumped up politicians ever being the figurehead. Many republics become dictatorial because they do not have this safety valve. It also means the Monarchy figurehead is never absolute either as the people can align themselves with either figurehead in time of division. So the President and Chancellor idea is similar - a safety valve.

    • @Shkk

      Having ceremonial presidents has its own advantages .
