One of my favorite writers. But when I see him speak he always seems oddly flustered and disjointed. Maybe he is out of his element in front of a group. I bet 1-1 he is endlessly interesting.
the Trobriand island tale at about 10:00 mins was a frightening scene, more fully described in his Happy Isles of Oceania book, where the natives make him walk in land with them.
@Etta James yes, people like compliments. it can show a little appreciation, motivation, and inspiration. I wonder if your comment was necessary? I wonder if there was some sexist intention behind it.
@Etta James Yes most people think 'pretty' and 'witty' are compliments, girls smile when I tell them, no date needed. It's acceptable where people are human beings. Suppress human nature all you want, but your mom didn't suppress your father when they had sex to have you. Women dress and look attractive for male viewers. Sex is in the animal kingdom, it's in the plant kingdom, and it's a part of human nature. Argue with nature or god if you don't like compliments, appreciation, sex, or human beings.
@Etta James A woman's interest has nothing to do with me thinking shes pretty. Someone may have chose her to do the interview because she's pretty anyways. I read somewhere when you appreciate the good the good appreciates. Btw it's so so so rare that I say a girl is pretty, sometimes I do it to brighten a girls day. Some girls I think are so pretty and I never tell them, because the timing has never been right, or I don't want them to think I want to have sex. Pretty is not enough, many pretty girls don't even know how to have sex so I don't care.
@Etta James So it's just better to never tell a girl shes pretty if it's not a date? she's meant to be a human being, not pretty. I value her character and the things she does more than a pretty face. What's a good compliment to you?
@Etta James I have to say, dictionary dot com states the meaning of pretty as, "pleasing or attractive to the eye, as by delicacy or gracefulness," and, " (of things, places, etc.) pleasing to the eye, especially without grandeur." With multiple origins of, 'cleaver', 'obstinate', 'glad', and 'cunning'. My instinct assumed pretty had multiple meanings before I looked it up, because as I mentioned earlier, pretty to me meant the whole package. How she moves when she talks, etc. Never just a face, in fact there are girls who's face are lesser prettier than some other girls face, but she was over all prettier because of her personality and assertive opinions. If I tell a girl 'you look nice', she may feel like I am her female friend and I have feminized myself, and that it is a weak average compliment and I am a weak average man, most women don't have enough assertiveness to actually find out if her assumptions are facts. Most of the time they are not. Maybe some men compliment only on looks, you would have to find out through that man if that's so. It's kind of unfair that only a limited number of people are allowed to use the word pretty. It's a confident word, like the word compassion, it means passion for all. Let me ask you this, do you think you're pretty? have guys told you so many time's you became sick of it? Most immature human behavior was passed down by children, children usually aren't smart enough to give real meaning to words no matter what age they are. I called an attractive classmate today, asked if she felt only certain people can tell her she's pretty, she said she would accept it from anyone. But she is not like most girls, she is very opinion assertive, she is full of character, she's not the kind of person to leave a guy on 'read'. Since cell phones came out around 2007, many people may be starting to gain a phobia of face to face compliment's, because emoji's and texts have taken over. The new young forever immature generation think cell phones have been around for centuries, they have only been around for about 10 years. Girls may judge a man for a few words, but married couples know it takes decades to get to know somebody, all assumptions are wrong, you have to go out and date, have sex like normal human beings, voice your opinions. No games, no waiting around forever like you're gonna live forever, youth and beauty fades fast.
Thanks for posting this.

Talking about your work spoils it.
Not when you're Paul Theroux.
