The 60s sure beats the shit nowadays.
They didn't scrimp on the soundtracks back then. All the top shows had great, memorable soundtracks back then that I can still remember to this day. This being one of my favourites.
And the excitement those themes would create back then. I would run to the TV set!
Theme from Peter Gunn.
Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale....
Vaguely remember this. I was eight in 1965.
One of the great pieces of theme music. That harpsichord sound turns up in so many pieces of that era. This piece absolutely encapsulates the cool of the 60's.
Edwin Astley .A musical Genius, and sadly missed
Is Edwin Astley related to Rick Astley
Patrick McGoohan is my favourite tv star of all time., and this theme is one of the greatest.
God bless you Edwin Astley and Orchestra. This is the definitive theme tune. Never to be forgotten. So full of sound and action. When I heard this as a lad I knew straight away it was Danger Man and I would be in front of that TV like a shot. What a superb actor Patrick McGoohan was in that role and so many others. I would be glued to the TV for the entire episode watching every move of Drake. Pure absolute quality from start to finish. Drake could run circles around other agents, and was the coolest of cool.
I'm just about done watching 39 episodes of Danger Man on Tubi. Next is Secret Agent, then The Prisoner, then Ice Station Zebra. What a talent he was! He has left a great body of work.
I remember The Scarecrow was on tv Disney show. I didn’t know it was a stand alone feature film. Interesting. I loved it as a kid when I saw it in the 60’s.
Don't forget "Escape from Alcatraz".
Just to let you Danger Man was renamed Secret Agent for tge American viewers. So Danger Man/ Secret Agent is one of the same.
Don't forget "Silver Streak" with Gene Wilder.
The entertainment of these shows didn't just start and end with the acting. The theme music was also a big part of the entertainment package. The writers 60's certainly knew how to compose a tune. All these shows, from both sides of the pond had great tunes.
Can’t tell you how much I love that theme.
The most exciting TV theme ever along with the ultimate spy TV programme. John Drake could outwit James Bond any day.
John Berry: Well said.
Edwin Astley.What a Composer.
The second best television theme having been composed by the same gentleman, Edwin Ashley.
I refer, of course, to THE SAINT.
Cheers!
@@williambabyak1094 there’s another great show right there
I totally agree 👍👍😎
Wonderful...one of the best 1960s TV themes!
One of the greatest works of music I've ever heard!
Superlative orchestration... a nod to the quintessential secret agent man, Patrick McGoohan.
Filled with joy and suspense..tv theme music you can’t forget and hum along with whenever the show comes on.
My favorite all time tv shows were Danger Man and The Prisoner...because Patrick McGoohan was such an interesting actor...he had a magnetic personality....and after reading and investigating the actual process of making The Prisoner I am all the more impressed by him. He was a unique and one of a kind man. Loved him!
Karen Marshall, I totally agree!!!
Agree with this assessment . I did , however , slightly prefer the original theme music .
❤❤❤
He was the most admired television actor in England for the decade of the 50's. As a Roman Catholic, he was offered the role of James Bond, but turned it down because of the sexually promiscuous aspects of the role. He knew that young boys would be influenced the wrong way by the role if he didn't have any sway in having that part of the Bond role rewritten.
Undoubtedly, Danger Man and The Prisoner were superior TV series due to the brilliant and enigmatic Patrick McGoohan. This theme was written by Edwin Astley who was the father of Pete Townshend’s first wife.
I love the piano sound. Definitely one of the best tv cult song EVER!
Claude D. Yep it is so memorable Claude... but it's not a piano,... it's a Harpsichord...but I know exactly what you mean...!! :)
Its, a Harpsichord
brilliant theme to danger man, its engraved in my heart,,for ever,,
SHOCKINGLY - I AM old enough to remember this. LOL...! Thanks for posting : )
I vividly remember Drake had a mini tape recorder disguised as a two rotary blade shaver.
You are not alone.
@@briane5706YES, I REMEMBER. And Not only THAT.. But The Man From Uncle-Napoleon Solo - had a secret (TWO-Way..!!!) 'Pocket-Radio' that he could communicate with AND it FIT In His pocket...!!!! LOL x MAX...!

It was originally a cigarette case, then later, a pen. Once when Kuryakin was searched and the pen looked at, he said
“The pen was a gift from my uncle”.
This has just become my ringtone !
Amazing! PATTY YOU WERE A GENIUS ! AND I LOVE YOU FOR being one!
We get so few these days!
Perfect music....And what nice series .....never found better afterward !
The two colour stills were taken from Koroshi, the TV compilation movie of the only two colour episodes of Danger Man ever shot. The very moment Patrick McGoohan got the green light from Lew Grade for The Prisoner, he promptly resigned from Danger Man and took the entire production crew to Portmerion to begin shooting on the introductory episode "Arrival" and that pretty much terminated Danger Man on the spot.
In the United States the series was retitled Secret Agent and rescored with the Johnny Rivers single "Secret Agent Man" which became a hit in its own right. The chorus lyric presaged The Prisoner:
Secret Agent Man
Secret Agent Man
They've given you a number
And taken 'way your name
I was born in 1958 so i was too young to watch this however i remember the music. Man in a suitcase is another terrific tune.
The proper version!!Classic series that blended into The Prisoner. What a great decade the 60s were for great tv and music.
One of the first theme tunes I remember from my childhood.
This is the BEST theme song EVER. Danger man. Try catch an episode or two. It's awesome sauce. x
Rememberings, rememberings, this Music will stay in our minds, in our ears, for ever. Genius sound by Edwin Astley, one of the best 60's TV series with Patrick McGoohan. What a funny time !
This tune was billed as "High Wire" on an Edwin Astley CD, soundtrack for Secret Agent for the American release, since they knew the series as Secret Agent instead of Danger Man. But this tune was used in the US version of the show not as the theme music, but as the "after the commercial" intro music to the episode, and on the final credits. Patrick was always the coolest "agent" ever.
Was England's favorite actor in the 50's and was the first choice to play the part of James Bond, but wanted to have artistic input. He was Roman Catholic and didn't want to be a cold blooded murderer and a cavalier womanizer. He especially didn't want to influence young boys in that way. Makes perfect moral sense.
Did McGooghan's faith influence The Prisoner? I think you can read the gassing scene in the title sequence as literal and thus what number 6 goes through as purgatory, discuss?
This was addressed by McGoohan in various interviews, and the upshot is he affirms the allegorical nature of the show, but nothing specifically Catholic. One is entitled to a little scepticism. The nested unmaskings at the end, from superego mask to ape ego to evil Id, say. Or the nature of the trinity being summarized in the number 6: Product and sum of three numbers, 3+2+1 = 3 x 2 x 1 = the father, the son, and the holy ghost. All good clean fun. But establishes nothing (0).
Ah. Memories. I think a lot of the stories still hold up today.
When they went from season 1 intro to season 2 intro I was like....what in the world is this? It was so different it was shocking. But then the new intro music quickly grew on me and of course it's great music ❤
Again and again, this theme is one of my favorite for TV series. After these of 60's , most were inspired and only refelected these real creations. Love it.
The greatest TV programme of all. I have all the Danger Man episodes on glorious DVD.
Wonderful theme tune, to a great 60's series !!
McGoohan. His finest hours. Finding Danger Man after he'd been Disney's Scarecrow of Romney Marsh.Wow. My fav actor ever.
But why did he resign ?
@Thomas Ritter Gosh--my three childhood loves in one comment!!!
@@melvinhowcroft2284 That would be telling.
And the villain of "Silver Streak," Roger Devereaux.
and the warden in Alcatraz
Absolutely marvelous!
Patrick McGoohan one of the greatest Irish persons who played British heroes
... And who was born in New York, U.S.A. ! ...
... and one of the finest gentlemen of television
adrian hickman .....and with scottish origin,as his name reveals!
Mc is Scottish, and Mac is Irish, is that it ?
Bob Morane -- Mac is generally considered Scottish, whereas Mc is Scots-Irish, but there are lots of exceptions both ways.
Here in the USA the series was titled SECRET AGENT. This was still the same theme on the American version of the series, except that it was replaced in the final 1965-1966 season by Johnny Rivers' hit theme song "Secret Agent Man".
Great tune.Great show.Comes third on my all time list of tv themes behind Man In a Suitcase and The Saint.
You forgot "The Baron" and "Department-S".
What a fabulous tune, this will make an excellent ring tone.
A truly great piece of music.
Fantastic hearing this again.
That brings back memories ,
He was the BEST spy ever. While I like the Johnny Rivers song this is way cooler and more sophisticated, just like John Drake!
Thank you so much for posting this GEM of music history!
Love it! :-)
All the versions that I listened to previously to hearing this, rang "untrue" in my mind. THIS is how the theme should sound, as it came with the original tv programme. I remember the theme well, as it was the first time I had ever heard, or heard of, a harpsichord. Thank you for posting this!
I had never heard this theme until the last month, when someone posted a Danger Man episode to RUclips. And I immediately had to have it; it's incredible, so much more energy and menace than the tune the USA associates with the show, Johnny Rivers' "Secret Agent Man". Found it on a Italian import cd, with some other music from the show.
One of the best ! Can't forget what built lot of movies and TV. series. Lovely actions and stories. Followed later by "the prisonner". A must ! Thank.
Today’s replacement cheap reality tv is so painful. This was superb plus the Avengers and much more.
This show was great. I have all of the half hour series episodes as well as the expanded 60 minute episodes.
Patrick McGoohan, driving his mini, best secret agent ever!
LouZ ontek ... His Lotus Super Seven, in the Prisoner TV series, wasn't bad either ! ...
Bob Morane Absolutely true. My brother built a Lotus after watching The Prisoner.
LouZ ontek BEST BEST BEST
@@MartinLeMalin It's in a museum. Money wouldn't buy it.
Once again, inventive melody and new electric sounds for that time ! Pleasant and creative.
Always the best version! Can't help me listening it enjoyed!
Used to watch the show with my Dad when I was younger.
love this version!
A very interesting piece of music and is among my favorite.
what a classic from the60s,the decade that spawned the best tv themes we are ever likely to see, great post thanks,
I remember this music when I have 6 or 7 years old. Nostalgie....
My favourite version of a brilliant theme. Thanks for upping this.
the whole things amazing! fantastically orchestrated.i love the wah wah sound in the brass section probably done with mutes.takes me right back to childhood watching this on tv when i was about 10!
Man, now I am in the mood for this show...
Awesome.. takes me back 44yrs, great version, Thanks Mate.
Although the hour-long version of "Danger Man" was re-titled "Secret Agent" in North America (since the original half-hour version, while a hit in the UK in 1960 and 1961 was a flop in the 'States as a Summer replacement in 1961), with Johnny Rivers' vocal recording of "Secret Agent Man" as the theme song, "High Wire" (the name of this song) was heard in the U.S. broadcasts of the series.
The first few harpsichord notes were heard after the Johnny Rivers theme with the opening credits, with an off-camera voice-over saying "'Secret Agent"...brought to you by...(and then the sponsor's name would be mentioned)". In both the British and American broadcasts, most of "High Wire" would be heard after the teaser with the episode credits (Series Devised By Ralph Smart, Written By Such-And-Such, Directed By So-And-So, and the Episode Title).
CBS wanted a "hipper" American theme, and a title to reflect the growing demand for "secret agent" TV shows at the time.
I remember this from Secret Agent program, I loved it and it's good to hear it like this in it's entirety..cool music..
Great drumming!
When Paul Keating placed a hand on The Royal Personage, I composed a little ditty that fitted this music. It went, "Don't touch the Queen - You don't know where she's been - Don't touch the Queen - You wouldn't want to make a scene - Don't touch the Queen - She'll make you... (if I include the rest, I might end up in The Tower!)"
This IS the definitive theme.....ironically I too was watching it aged 7 in 1965 when it first came out.......but with my grandmother too.....in Aston, Herts
Oh, I love this. I just discovered this show on Amazon Prime and I'm enjoying it. I love the harpsichord on this track. I like how you recorded your record player. Thanks for the upload.
I remember watching this on reruns as a kid with the the Johnny Rivers' song as the theme. Then I bought the dvd collection of the show, which has this song as the theme and NOT the Johnny Rivers song.
This post and the comments below cleared up my confusion. I thought I just remembered everything wrong from my childhood when I got the dvd! LOL!
Great! I loved this serie. I saw it in Sweden as a kido :-)
Patrick was the coolest spy ever... I miss him:.(
I remember hearing this song every time the show opens up with him coming in on the passenger jet. the direction of the opening was fantastic. Of course, this is the other version call Secret Agent Man that was played here.
Thankyou to all commentaries, I believed I was the only who thought the theme genius.
When ITC released the hour-long episodes of the series in the U.S. as "SECRET AGENT" in 1965, another theme was composed and used {"Secret Agent", by Sloan & Barri, and sung by Johnny Rivers}.
Amazing this series I'll always remember them and Patrick McGoohan.
I say how absolutely spiffing !
....forever ...forever in our hearts.......
It's a great theme...love the stylish English TV series of the 60s.
Here's a bit of personal trivia for ya (and a warning to parents!) I was a baby when this show was on TV. I mean just a few months old, and I remembered this song. I never associated it with "Secret Agent Man" which had that catchy Johnny Rivers Tune (later 60's). It wasn't until a year ago I saw Danger Man here on RUclips, heard the music and BOOM! it all came back to me! See, babies DO remember! Thanx for uploading!
fantastic !!!
The Best !!!
Iconic theme.
Cutting edge TV.
Sooo Sixties!
Undoubtably the pre-cursor to 'The Prisoner' series.
I grew up on this show and it was very accurate as I later went into Government work including USSS in 1974. Today is my anniversary date. (Wash.D.C.)
They all know this
Stunning bit of music.
Fantasic music...
Secret Agent and The Saint are two of the best TV dramas. And with some hilarious comedy in the subtle and not-so-subtle, Brit satire of other European nations. I put their theme music on my phone answering machine.
This brings back fond memories!
Brilliant Actor
J'adore!
I love this
brilliant-that vinyls in good nick too-bravo!
The best of Edwin Astley's themes. Of an equal to Ron Grainger's 'The Prisoner' and John Barry's 'The Persuaders'.
And Grainer’s “Man in a Suitcase”. 👏
Man about the House is quite nice.
@@michaelschramm1064 yes indeed
Oh, that one :-) oldie and goodie.
Patrick McGoohan ❤🙏
The Times did a great cover of this about 30 years ago.
This was not American. As a very young American, this is what reached out and appealed to me. It had a punch and packaging that grabbed me because it was always past my bedtime and I had to listen and imagine. Same thing with the theme music from The Saint. My young imagination yearned to be part of the world and the action the musical sound portrayed.
Yes it is a fantastic theme!
Not my favourite, but still great, here I am listening and travelling back to those times as a youngster sitting in front of the tv with Mum and Dad and little sister, what days they were, many of us will know what I mean......
Yeah,1963.I was 4 and on the carpet.
Fantastic.*****.
Almighty great tune, very well arranged
did we have a damn fine time? oath we did! thanks patrick Mcgoohan and friends.
Right up there with John Barry’s “The Persuaders” and Ron Grainer’s “Man in a Suitcase”.
Ron Grainer composed some great themes.
@@Golo1949 Yes, love “The Prisoner” theme and his “Omega Man” score.
