According to the writers, bloodwine was called wine even though it was way stronger than earth whiskey because that was supposed to let us know the bloodwine was their casual drink, and their "hard stuff" was even stronger
@justin heads the "hard stuff" is called warnog. Apparently an "ale", served like a whiskey, clear (with a slight yellow tinge) in colour, and judging by reactions, made of pure fire. (TNG S2 E18: "Up The Long Ladder")

But I feel an opportunity was definitely missed here going with simple instead of gum syrup. That extra viscosity would have helped sell the idea of this being made from congealing blood.

There are some beverages, in real life (here on Earth), that use blood from animals. There are some wines that use lamb, pigeon and even goat blood. In Japan, if you have deep enough pockets, you can get a beverage that uses snapping turtle blood (although I do not remember if it's straight snapping turtle blood or if they add something to it).
@@dralukmun8420 Can confirm it is diluted with nihonshu. It was about 1:1 ratio of blood to booze when I had it in Japan. All you can taste is the alcohol; the blood is there not for flavor but for alleged health benefits.
As a point of interest, I wonder if prune juice could be used as a base for mead, and then you could mix in some zinfandel port and maybe a shot (or two) of Woodford bourbon. I wonder if that would be too much. I could also see the port/mead mix tossed in with some kind of sweeter barley wine.
I could see adding some a sweeter fortified wine. Add a touch of sweet, and bit of dryness all its own, up the alcohol content, and maybe even enhance the color. Plus, given that we have this version and we can add a version for a port, a Madeira, a sherry, a Marsala, and a sweet vermouth. And those are just the ones I have at my local grocery store. I think you've just hit on an entire cocktail family right here!
There's a piece of side media (IIRC called 'The Klingon Way' - I found an audiobook of it a few years back) that said that the part of why Worf liked prune juice is because it's strong, thick and viscous, while Klingons scorn thin, 'watery' drinks as weak and too easily corrupted (while a warrior's blood and spirit is thick and strong). From the looks of it in the glass what you've got there would probably pass muster :)
Intriguing. . .I once held a ST-themed party and made a couple of bottles of "Blood Wine." I used Everclear, Jaegermeister and Maraschino Cherry syrup. It had the desired effect. . .if having a small Klingon climb inside your skull with a pickaxe is the desired effect.
There used to be a Star Trek themed bar in Las Vegas called "Quarks Bar" that was part of a licensed "Star Trek Experience". Would be really cool to see you make some of the drinks they served there, like the "Warp Core Breach"
In Germany you can still get with blood in it. I’ve had it, preferred the flavor to be honest. I don’t like It locally, tastes like rotten twizzlers. Quite a different flavor with blood. In US can’t get, but we ruin a lot of good drinks with our stupid rules. Like Guinness, US destroyed it.
I remember the first time someone gave me a drink with 1.5oz of angostura bitters. I was so confused and thought it was a waste, then it got me wasted! Been hooked ever since!
2:40 Similarly euphemistic "it's alcoholic so it must be wine!" way of naming things swedish vodka/moonshine is called "brännvin" which translates to burnt/burning wine (bränn = burnt/burning, vin=wine), so I kinda love that close enough way of translating and naming of things. It speaks of an asynchronicity between cultures and how definitions are temporary and context sensitive, and maybe if there was ever anything set after TNG that was actually good maybe they would rename klingon bloodwine to blood rum or something like that.
I'm very happy for LITERALLY ALL OF THE CHANNELS I WATCH TRAGICALLY REGULARLY that they're receiving additional sponsorship from Bright Cellars. They've really stepped up that ad budget. So. So. So. So. Do. Much.

I will have to experiment. You have given me some ideas to be sure.

Since I can't post images, I'm gonna describe it as best as I can. :) It's a cocktail served in what appears to be a brandy or "tall cocktail" glass (very large and round, with a curved lip) with a white layer on the bottom and a blue layer fading into it on top. It's garnished with a lime wheel, a cherry, a yellow plumeria (looks like an "Island Dream Yellow Frangipani", did an image search), and a thick bendy straw (this is likely a thick frozen drink). I'm thinking maybe a layered piña colada or something??? That blue layer also looks like it's easily attainable from blue curaçao. Either way, I can't wait to see you get creative with it!
It should be garnished with live earthworms. (A.K.A. - Gagh) (Although that can be replaced with something like a gummy worm for the weak-stomached, although I can totally see a stewed prune as an option too!) Also, if I was making this, I would probably cut the angustora, simple syrup, and lime juice all by half, add an ounce of a vibrant red wine, (somewhere like a merlot?) and half an ounce of everclear to overproof it "correctly". That should still get you something bracing, and vibrant, without being overly floral, and I think the colour should better approximate the look of blood. Still, this DOES look very appetizing, and I'd love to try it someday.
My first hought for *twice as strong as whisk(e)y and completely revolting* was everclear with angostura. Coincidentally, there's a really similar recipe from reddit user Duffuser known as The Mega Daiquiri. Same ounce of Angostura, same ounce of lime, but using an ounce of Smith & Cross instead of Lemon Hart 151, and only 3/4 of an ounce of simple syrup rather than a full ounce. Looking back at the thread, it looks like that user also tried it with Wray & Nephew and preferred it, so using overproof rum in this was a good call. Anyway! Because these recipes are super similar, I can already confirm that this is a fantastic drink. :D
Just made one of these with a few small alterations due to what I have on hand. I used a little less Angustora bitters, because I had just under an oz left. Added orange bitters, and grenadine mixed with vodka to make up the alcohol difference, and used Navy strength Smith and cross because I have no 151 on hand. Makes for a bit more volume but man it was tasty 😋
I have waited for you to do this episode. I have made various attempts at Blood Wine, none have been resounding successes. I once tried to mimic the blood like quality with beef bullion, which was way too salty. Like the many terrible Romulan Ales I have suffered through in my convention going days. I can honestly say the only good drink I have made was the Saurian Brandy from the "Official" cook book that came out in the 70's. Even that took aging a couple of years to really get good.
Wait until he learns that in Dishonored series there's plenty of cocktail recipes plastered around the bars and weird places. Also Deep Rock Galactic has multiple different beers (without recipes though) Let me transcribe one of the drinks (the simplest one) here, just for the reference. Gin, 2 ounces cane sugar, a small spoon ice, a handful nutmeg, fresh "Pour the gin over the sugar and stir. Add ice and grate nutmeg over the top. Serve in a short glass. We'll make it hot instead if you prefer and if we like you."
Ive been watching for a while and he deserves wayyy more subs. Hes privy to internet culture and humor and the video quality and editing is amazing! Hope to see this blowing up to the name staple drink channel on youtube.
The official Star Trek Cookbook (the one with Neelix on the cover) details what was used on set, basically red grape juice with ground up cranberries, for the coagulated bit floating on top. For a version with more oomph, mixing in wine is suggested (I go with a cheap Beaujolais; bloodwine is also supposed to be sweet, and a fruity wine fits the bill nicely). It also sneaks up on you, meaning it's real easy to get seriously plowed if you're not careful).
Really love the fact you're doing drinks from my favorite TV show of all time. I've asked this before and I'll ask again lol. Can you please make a Cardassian sunrise? Please and thank you
if you're looking at boosting the strength, you could add some high proof everclear or moonshine. and some umami powder for some meatyness, as bloodwind should have.
It's a new year, more Star Trek drink videos in 2021? Star Trek has been my quarantine companion with it's closed off life aboard space ships and communication through tech really making me more comfortable with day to day life in this era.
I actually tried to make this one back in 2016! simple mix, a standard glass of Maxwell Honey Mead, and you add Cherry wine until you get a nice deep red. For me, that was about 4oz.
Klingon Bloodwine 1 have these ingredients to make the Bloodwine 1 1 bottle of red port or wine 1 inch of fresh ginger Peeled & sliced a numbers of fesh chillies(to taste)
Greg, I laughed aloud when you included the "prune juice warrior's drink" clip, because I'm watching TNG through right now and I just saw that like 2 days ago.
Binging this because I'm not allowed alcohol right now getting ready for major surgery. But when this dry spell Is over I'm going to have to get some ingredients and work up something for Klingon blood wine because even though this sounds balanced and interesting I can't shake the feeling it's missing something. But that is something only time and quite a lot of tasting will solve. Mostly I guess I'm just disappointed that blood orange wasn't used. But I'm going to have to try the original before I start Riffing it into something I would drink frequently.
All I know about wine is that if you want a sweet wine, get wine from grapes that were grown during a wet season and if you want a dry wine, get wine from grapes that were grown during a dry season hence the term dry. On from most other seed crops tends to be a very good year for wine grapes. That's the reason why vineyards are so prolific in California. I love wine.
Loved the video but a small correction: at 5:35 that's the late great René Auberjonois playing Odo disguised as a Klingon saying it wasn't bad and not Chief O'Brien. :)
I wonder if a "blood wine" could be made using heart and/or liver that is minced or pureed and fermented. It would absolutely need to be cooked before getting to the fermenting part.
@@_meatsoup IIRC it had a red wine base, some cranberry juice to deepen the color and the bullion. I think it could have benefitted from something to raise the proof.
There is a couple friends that makes their own version Klingon Blood wine every year. Brings it to Star Trek Las Vegas convention. Each one is different and one is definitely stronger than the other.
5:35 This is not O'brien. It is Odo after the Founders made him human as penance for killing a changeling. The episode in which that happened was quite important as it laid the foundation for this episode which depicted the events that lead to the reformation of the Khitomer Accords. I write this comment because René Auberjonois and Constable Odo both deserve recognition in their key parts in defeating the Dominion. After all it was Odo who managed to find out the Founders had infiltrated the Klingon Empire and, although he was wrong about Gowron being a Changeling, it was he who figured out that General Martok was actually a Changeling and managed to expose him before Sisko had a chance to kill Gowron. ... so there.
in the game Star Trek Online there is a drink that is known as the "Purple People Dropper" which no Human can take and still stay standing, it is mentioned in the story mission "episode" 'The Khitomer Discord' A Romulan and a Reman can be heard discussing a drink combining Romulan Ale and Klingon Blood Wine in a drink called a "Purple People Dropper" which no Human can take and still stay standing. It is possible that it is a reference to the marijuana strain "Purple Panty Dropper". it is said that one can tell that the mixologist has prepared it correctly by the perfect deep shade of purple for which the cocktail takes on. Please oh Please seeing as you've already tackled both Klingon Bloodwine, and Romulan Ale, revisit these and test your mettle against a drink that is said no human can remain standing upon drinking.
Great channel!! It's super-informative and your humor and presentation are excellent. That oak barrel you have back there - I'd love to see a video where you break down the various things you can do with it, e.g. not only aging but finishing. I have one, but I could never get the damn thing to stop leaking. I’ll get another and try again one of these days, but I’d love to hear your thoughts in the meantime.
If you want to go for the Star Trek trinity - and just cos it would be.... interesting - may I suggest the popular Ferengi beverage of choice, Slug-o-cola ("It's the slimiest cola in the galaxy!")? Cardassian Kanar would be interesting, too... Can a regular drink move *that* slowly in the glass?
Recently decided to watch voyager since my dad used to watch it during my childhood. 5 series in so far, got to watch the original Picard and such yet though. :)
Qapla! This looks delicious, ango is my jam. I do think perhaps it should be a salty-sweet cocktail. I'll might experiment to find something more blood evocative
Hmm. very appealing libation good sir. Not what I expected as my mind was leaning toward Everclear and grenadine with some vermouth to give it that mouth drying mellow sour... like old blood. and of course a healthy dose of simple syrup.

Also Deep Rock Galactic has multiple different beers (without recipes though)
Let me transcribe one of the drinks (the simplest one) here, just for the reference.
Gin, 2 ounces
cane sugar, a small spoon
ice, a handful
nutmeg, fresh
"Pour the gin over the sugar and stir.
Worried we wouldnt get many videos while in quarantine. The live streams are great. But I miss the slow motion pours/spills!
The whole episode I was hoping you'd fit in a "Pity the warrior..." and you snuck it in right at the end. Love it.
I made this exactly as shown and it was amazing, one of the best drinks I've seen on the show. It will definitely be one of my regulars.
I have to say u have the best intro music of any RUclips channel it's just the best .
Please and thank you
I wanna see that one too.
Kanar maybe
Yay sponsors. Good job greg and the how to drink crew.
if you're looking at boosting the strength, you could add some high proof everclear or moonshine.
and some umami powder for some meatyness, as bloodwind should have.
Klingon Bloodwine 1 have these ingredients to make the Bloodwine 1
1 bottle of red port or wine
1 inch of fresh ginger
Peeled & sliced a numbers of fesh chillies(to taste)
Greg, I laughed aloud when you included the "prune juice warrior's drink" clip, because I'm watching TNG through right now and I just saw that like 2 days ago.
Tiki-Trek, anyone?
I'm not a Star Trek fan, particularly, but I love the way this cocktail sounds. I'm gonna try it ASAP. Thanks, Greg. I love HTD.
You beat me. I was thinking of doing this one. Great Choice. and fun to watch as always.
I tried it at work... we don’t have the lemon hart rum. I like it! I could get into that!
That was Odo in disguise. Great video! Blood wine for me tonight! Q'apla!!!
Last time I was this early for a HTD video, I had to use the stellar breakaway time warp method to return to my own time period.
Love this drink, tried it last night. Klingons know how to make a good cocktail.
Was wondering how this drink video hasn’t been made so far. Excellent.
I made this today. The ounce of Angostura really does bring out the iron. Wowzers...
Definitely the cleanest pour you've ever done!
A severed ear would make a great substitute for an orange wheel. Maybe Klingons have jars of pickled ears in their dive bars. Aesthetic and chewy.
5:34 damn, that sounds/ looks like Odo!
I made a version that contained beef bullion once, it was terrible.
@@Booger414 If it was that bad then it was perfect.
@@_meatsoup IIRC it had a red wine base, some cranberry juice to deepen the color and the bullion. I think it could have benefitted from something to raise the proof.
love this, live long and prosper, however... 5:35 that is actually Odo in disguise not O'Brien, but they both look alike as klingons anyways lol
There is a couple friends that makes their own version Klingon Blood wine every year. Brings it to Star Trek Las Vegas convention. Each one is different and one is definitely stronger than the other.
Love all the research you did! Or maybe you just knew! Either way love how much Star Trek you know!
After all it was Odo who managed to find out the Founders had infiltrated the Klingon Empire and, although he was wrong about Gowron being a Changeling, it was he who figured out that General Martok was actually a Changeling and managed to expose him before Sisko had a chance to kill Gowron.
... so there.
Okay, I had to like the vid just after the very first second, best intro so far :D
in the game Star Trek Online there is a drink that is known as the "Purple People Dropper" which no Human can take and still stay standing, it is mentioned in the story mission "episode" 'The Khitomer Discord'
A Romulan and a Reman can be heard discussing a drink combining Romulan Ale and Klingon Blood Wine in a drink called a "Purple People Dropper" which no Human can take and still stay standing.
It is equivalent to the Mongolian kumis which it is fermented from mares' milk. And Arkhi is the distilled kumis.
Hey great drink! I’d love to see an episode for Raktajino, aka Klingon Coffee. Maybe make it “Irish “ to get the alcohol in there. Lol
Greg going full Trek nerd just made my Friday. Qapla'!
Sounds like a tasty drink. I love Angostura bitters. I wonder how swapping grenadine for the simple syrup would affect the taste and color...
I really appreciate your videos. The production quality is excellent and the tasting notes are helpful.
Your Bloodwine is absolutely gorgeous!!
Try it with half an ounce of angostura....... magnificent balance.
I had no idea bitters were alcoholic til this very night when you alluded to it. There's something I learned today.
Hmm. very appealing libation good sir. Not what I expected as my mind was leaning toward Everclear and grenadine with some vermouth to give it that mouth drying mellow sour... like old blood. and of course a healthy dose of simple syrup.
I have almost all, when it comes to Star Trek ☺️Not all series, but I will get them if there is peoples who will seld theis in cheap price. The only Star Trek series I have in full collection and full Journey is Star Trek Voyager in a box ☺️ Not copied stuff. I have also Star Trek movies TMP, Wrath of Kahn, Search For Spock and Generations on DVD, which I have bought in a shop here in my hometown Aalesund ☺️
5:35 Odo is such a good changeling that he turned into O'Brien
Odo was human in this episode though.
@@oleg6320 That's not O'Brien though lol
More Star Trek please! LOVE these!
