Bitcoin Mining Shoes in 4 Minutes

  • Today I am open sourcing the hardware & software for my Bitcoin Mining running shoes. In this tutorial, I explain how to build the shoe hardware using about $10 in equipment, then how to program the shoe to mine bitcoin. We need more miners for the Bitcoin network that power their internet computers using renewable energy! This helps make the network more decentralized and secure without harming the planet. For example, some Bitcoin miners power their computers on top of Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion rigs located in isolated areas, with no need for billion dollar wires to route the energy back to land. Others will someday build a giant solar satellite to capture the total energy output of the Sun, embed it with Bitcoin Mining computers, and transmit that monetary energy back to Earth over Satellite Internet. I challenge you to build your own Bitcoin Miner that uses renewable energy! #BitcoinMiningChallenge

      The raspberry pico is too small to store the entire bitcoin blockchain. However, there is a raspberry pi that can do it, and i can use that in a future version. See this: linuxhint.com/mine-crypto-raspberry-pi/

      @@SirajRaval the primary issue is thermodynamic. Bitcoin mining is extremely competitive with high-performance ASICs. The notion of using the squishiness under one's feet to power Bitcoin mining is unrealistic in the extreme. The task has to fit the parameters. It would be useful to timestamp individual steps to generate fitness data, for example.

    • @SirajRaval
      @SirajRaval  Год назад +1

      @@k98killer i will agree that it's not profitable to mine Bitcoin on any type of hardware other than a high performance ASIC at the current Bitcoin price, but what if 1 BTC = 1 million USD in 5 years? Then, even if you mine at a loss, you will make money in the long run by HODLing. Yes, you could also just buy BTC instead of mining, but mining is the only way to truly earn BTC without KYC in the form of the coinbase (block reward + total sum of transaction fees in a block) totally anonymously.

      @@SirajRaval I conjecture that there isn't enough power in a footstep to mine a single satoshi, but I'd be happy to be proven wrong. You might mine a single share after a few months of walking around, but you'll never get enough for a payout. It is impractical in the extreme. You'd be better off running some kind of alt coin validation and then swapping into Bitcoin if you got enough to do so. I've been mining cryptos since the launch of f2pool, so this analysis is tempered by experience.

  • @Death_Networks
    @Death_Networks Год назад +49

    Wait... What? But... Doesn't that just make a shoe that powers a battery that powers a pi to tell a laptop to do the mining? Wouldn't it be faster and exactly the same powerwise (for the actual mining) to just click 'start mining' on the laptop before going for a walk?
    Or did I majorly miss something... I must have misunderstood something right?

    • @SirajRaval
      @SirajRaval  Год назад +5

      There are 3 steps to mine bitcoin. 1. Generate an Address. 2. Construct a Block. 3. Mine the Block. In this first version of the shoe miner, the pi only does the first step. A secondary device does the remaining 2 steps. But in the next version, i'll use a raspberry pi with more storage and computing power that can do all 3. It's been done before, see this: linuxhint.com/mine-crypto-raspberry-pi/

    But why mine bitcoin? Also, isn't the computer effectively mining with this setup? Even if the pi would be mining, how would that work without internet? I like the concept, but I see a few flaws. First is that bitcoin is way too hard to mine and you'd be only mining a couple of cents a day if you are lucky. So it needs to be done for an altcoin. Even then, internet usage. Its Hella expensive I recon if you are mining outside with a simcard if it's even possible. Having that said, I do like the idea for sure. I've been thinking recently if it weren't possible to mine crypto utilizing renewable energy. Thanks for the inspiration!

    I think if you look at Siraj's interest in education, motivation, and health, one can understand his goal with this project.
    Regarding if it is profitable. They have been trying to produce fusion energy for a long time even though it still isn't profitable.
    Maybe Siraj is thinking about all the Dabbawalas running around all day and night for pennies who could be making a side gig mining bitcoin in their saddles...
    People have to think out of the box sometimes.
    Luckily Saraj does that...
    I haven't read all the comments but if anyone is criticizing - it would be more valuable to contribute to the effort with suggestions or tips than complaining.
    Sad if people would just come online to criticize while offering nothing of value. Much better for a smart person to offer a suggested use-case or project circuit with additional components like CAPs etc, instead of offering nothing.
    Siraj. if you are reading.
    I also wanted to share about the doctor/GP who put a fish bowl full of cash in his reception area and whenever his patients lost weight they got to take a dollar per pound lost out of the fish bowl. It was the best tool he had to motivate his patients to be healthy. Telling his patients to be healthy did nothing until he started to offer them cash to be motivated to take baby steps in their life - 1 dollar at a time or one step at a time if you are running ....
    So bitcoin is one of those modern-day fish bowls that have some interesting places to be applied - including your health for bitcoin initiative.
    If you like I have some thoughts on that and other related topics, but either way I think you are on the right track using motivation to achieve initiatives.
    The brave browser might not be profitable for a North American user but in other places, it can be a good side gig, like running shoes .. ANd if not for making bitcoin, it is good to charge the batteries for the evening if you live in a developing country or rural area with no electricity. I would take a look at the potential to see where the best application is. Runners or speed bumps who knows ... There is R&D science out there for these types of applications.
    For decades I thought Crank flashlights were awesome for developed countries but no one pushed them because they don't make a profit, so sometimes the best ideas that make no money are overlooked for where people can make money or promote ideas that cost a lot. That is often the biggest hurdle for change and support for those in need. It is often not about the best idea - more often about who can make money. But it also offers opportunities for people like Saraj who are willing to look at things from a different view and for a different motivation other than money.
    Kudos to you for taking the time.
