Thanks from Russia! I am 20 years old and at the age of 17 I had my first epilepsy attack on the road. I woke up in a car with adult men who knew where my house was, since we have a small town and everyone knows each other. I thought I was overheated in the sun, I didn't take it seriously. My relatives saw the attacks, I was prescribed a vimpat, and I will say that suicidal thoughts do not leave me, I think about the meaning of life every day. I wake up with a desire to sleep, and menstruation is extremely painful. This fall I will go to the consultation again. With love from Siberia🤧
This makes me feel so much safer transitioning from Keppra to Lacosamide. I've been on Keppra for a little over a year and while I am seizure free, the biggest side effects that come in waves are depression, mood swings, and drowsiness. I hope Lacosamide is a good pick for me
After 9 years of uncontrolled seizures, this medication along with Dilantin and clobazam finally stopped them. The main side effect I've noticed from lacosamide is a numb mouth/lips and a memory impairment.

My son just started Vimpat about 6 weeks ago. He is also taking zonagran and has been on that medicine for 17 years. He never had seizures for about 1.5 decades and suddenly had a status episode. He is doing okay now, but still has staring seizures. They are small, but I am hoping to get him back to what he was. Vimpat is well tolerated by him and way better than Keppra which they used first. Keppra was a nightmare for him.
Yeah, Keppra had really bad side effects with me also. Lamotrigine was and is a lot better for me. My neurologist is considering putting me on vimpat with the lamotrigine for some of the more rare seizures I have now after testing my lamotrigine levels
I did not have my first seizure until I was 21. Lots of meds didn’t work. Vimpat saved my life. I literally can’t even remember the last time I had a seizure. No side effects whatsoever besides my lips going numb about 15 minutes after taking it. Miracle drug.

Our 7yo boy has had absence seizures lasting many minutes, upwards of 15 minutes, since he was 3. These however, only ever occurred when he was sick, so 2-3 a year. Started on Kepra, which didn't stop the seizures but seemed to greatly reduce them. However he developed anger issues, so they put him on Locosamide this year. About 3 months in he started having seizures monthly and without being sick, first time, seizures also presented themselves with visual distortion. They upped his Locosamide to 225mg a day, which gave him two weeks of these visual distortions but no actual seizures.. he has then had two, both lasting over 15 mins, while at this higher dose.. Pretty sure they are being caused by the Lacosamide and want him off it but his Neuro says Vimpat doesn't cause an increase in seizure activity, not what I've seen online where it seems to increase seizure activities in many peoples comments.
Our son is a paradoxical patient and not many seizure meds work, in fact some cause more seizure or have horrific side effects. After starting him on Zonisamide 50mg before bed, it worked but didn't last long. Then we added Vimpat 50 morning and 50 night with Zonisamide and it worked well but eventually the break through seizures happened. Then we increased the evening dose to 75 and that stopped the seizures altogether, unfortunately it greatly affected his sleep. We added Clonidine which was an absolute disaster as that completely stopped his sleeping which led to brain inflammation, hitting head and rage. We had to start a protocol to save his life which included 400mg of Motrin every 8 hours and 2 mg Benedryl every 4 hours for 48 hours. This protocol helped greatly and now he's stabilized with Vimpat at 50 morning and night that control his short seizures about 70%. We will be starting the Ketogenic Diet for the first time so hopefully this will work.
Have you looked into the possibility of PANS or PANDAS for your son? Our son's epilepsy seems to either be caused by PANS or is triggered by it. Hope he does well
I take vimpat and keppra so far I’m 14 months grand mal free. I was diagnosed with epilepsy 3 years ago during the first covid lockdown in the UK. Every week or so I get these weird flare ups like serious anxiety.

@Dr.Omar My daughter had her first febrile at 7 months, was short episode with stoffenong of limbs. Then she was started on phenytoin. And at 12 months another febrile seizure which led to frothing on one side of her mouth and continued for more than 10 minutes and was stopped by midozalam. Now phe ytoin was stopped and levipil was started. She had uprolling of her eyes hardly 5 times maybe, when she was playing intensively in a span of 6 months. At one and a half years she jad another febrile att k where she vomitted and went onto staring episode which was stopped by midozalam. Then she was started on oxcarbazepine and strted developing eyelid myoclonia at once and started dropping her head backwards. It subsided when oxcarbazepine was stopped. Them she was given sodium valproate for which she started developi ng absence episodes which worsened woth increasing dose and finally led to status with consiousness between seizures. She had sei, ures 10sec and for a minute she was ok and again seizure and thia continued for almost 2 hours and she was kept on midozalam for 3 days and her seizure frequency decreased. But our docs suggested we go on with prednisolone steroid and that was administered for 4 months with levipil, ethosuximide, sodium valproate and clobazam. During her 4 months of steroids she had seizures and all were febrile. And exactly at 2 years of age her steroid was stopped and her meds continued. After 6 months of being seizure free, sodium valproate was weaned off. And after 1 and half months i.e. after 7 and a half months she had her seizure again and that was febrile too which stopped ok its own. And now for every 15 days mostly, or say mo thly twice or thrice she had febrile seizures and later when she was turning 3 years there were no reason for her seizure, we presume maybe infection triggered. She had almost 5 6 episodes of seizure. Now again at 3y, 3months my doctor suggested we start her with valproate. She has now started having cluater of absences right after sometime of waking up. What do you suggest? When I consulted another neurologist he suggested ot lacosamide and levipil is enough. I am so confused. Her seizure pattern is that...she starts with a straight blank stare and turns her eye towards left side with her trunk stiffening and her whole body stiffens I guess...sonetimes it's only blank stare and flabby body. I take 200MG of Vimpat a day, 100 in the morning, 100 at night. It makes me very sleepy and gives me weird ass dreams. The name brand is definitely different, the generic makes me feel more sleepy and more anxious. Overall it’s a miracle drug however the side effects are very strong. Makes my pee the darkest yellow, also makes me a bit depressed and feel not that interested in life. The blurred vision is an understatement. I’m just waiting till I can get on something better or have surgery perhaps.
Hello! Hopefully this isn’t too late to reach out but my wife was recently diagnosed with epilepsy and i just started really learning about all these medications. But i have to ask how you been able to cope with your depression or dealt with it over the years ?? My wife has been complaining about that and being more sad about things going on in life that’s really out of our control and i just want her to be happy even tho she has to take medications
My daughter has been taking Vimpat (100) 3 tab/3 times a day. (maintenance of 900 mg a day) Together with Pregabalin (Lyrica) , Levetiracetam (Ivetra) , Clonazepam (Rivotril). She has focal epilepsy however she has hypermotor seziures in the afternoon, evening, and early morning.
Thank you for sharing your experience. I hope she feels better soon. You can review the drug resistant epilepsy for more information when medications do not work for seizures
I found Vimpat way better than Keppra! The only thing I don’t like about Vimpat is the bad anxiety and panic attacks! Also the ringing in the ears!! I went from 150mg twice a day to 100mg twice a day. Had a random seizure and went back to 150mg twice a day. Going to 150mg a day the panics attacks became horrible. My doctor put me back to 100mg in the morning and 150mg at night!! It took me about 3 weeks to get over all those side affects. Also if able and you can afford it. Get the brand name VIMPAT. DO NOT GET GENERIC.. Overall, I give it a 8/10
I appreciate you giving your experience. I've been slowly weaning off Keppra not cause of rage but the extreme anxiety and panic attacks. Sad but I'd rather deal with seizures then a life filled with unnecessary fear
@@47beckypooh keppra gave me anger issues and jealousy towards others. And with this attitude it diminishes a support group that you need to get through epilepsy. And my neurologist wondered why I was such a jerk
After having taken Carbamazipine, Diphantoine, Keppra and having a steadily increase of my auras and occasional absences (25 years post operative), I am now taking lacosamide for two months. I can see a decrease in the auras of up to 75 %. No absence. I take 200mg once daily. And I have never had such a good outcome for any anti-epileptical drug.
Thank you for sharing your experience. It is important to mention that anxiety is common in Epilepsy and has specific treatment. You can review the videos on anxiety and Depression in epilepsy
@@DrOmarDanoun... I've mentioned these symptoms to doctors I've seen and have done research with epilepsy and anxiety. What's strange is I was given depakote in the beginning of having epilepsy. Also was given trileptal and few years later diagnosed bipolar disorder and anxiety.
The only bad part about Vimpat is that they never have it in the pharmacies. It always has to be special to order. It only seemed like it happened this year before it had easy access. Not to mention your doctor has to write a new prescription every time you switch to a different pharmacy.
So should I be grateful for controlling my seizures and not worry about the side effects? Cause the medicines controlled my seizures and others are taking all kinds of medicine still having trouble..
Have started Lacosamide a few months ago, alongside Levetiracetam 1500mg BD and Lamotrigine 200 BD. Am currently on dosage of 200mg twice daily. Hopefully since the dosage has been increased, the 3 might well start working together although am currently undergoing evaluation for surgery since have tried 3 different medications before this.
Hi Dr. Danoun- I have been taking it - 150mg x 2 (twice a day) for the past two months. I have nocturnal seizures only and am getting ready to do a daytime/nighttime sleep study as well. Is this one you recommend for nocturnal seizures? Thank you!
There is no specific medication for nocturnal seizures. Depending on the cause and type of epilepsy and patient background we choose the best treatment
I am on vimpat, zonisamide, Keppra XR and carbamazepine er and my seizure are just starting to get better. When I started the Vimpat it helped bit time!!
What is your opinion on depakote and lacosamide being taken at the same time. My Moms lacosmide level is at 19.7mcg/ml. I feel that’s a little high. Valproic Acid Level free is 12.3mg/L. Valproic Acid level is 108.0 ug/L. I was told that Free levels are more accurate, compared to total. Also ammonia level and Liver function are all normal
Hey Doc, if lacosimide is working for seizures but causing nightmares, how do I deal with this? I wake up with a speeding heart rate in the middle of a dream where I usually think I’m dead.
Lacosimide was doing well 4 a long while I had 2 taken off it cause up creasing it I was having real bad dizzy spells that I could stand up and when I did stand up I fell and bash my head
Hi Dr. Danoun, there is no other brand of Lacosamide, right? my daughter is taking it for 2 years , 100 mg, 3 times a day. toger with Leveget,Lamictal, and Rivotril, but still she has no seizre free day. I ask because its expensive for 9 tablets a day. Thank you
Hi Doctor Danuon, I am epileptic and I have been taking vimpat and tegretol for more than a year already .I feel a very bad chest discomfort. I feel like my heart is being squeezed. Sometimes, it comes with memories and sometimes without. The one with memories always comes before seizures and the one without it come multiple times a day. can please help me
Suddenly got seizures at the age of 56, maybe my Crohn's has to do with it. They never found a cause and i have been taking Vimpat since 1,5 years now after trying Depakote (which turned me into a zombie). I take 50mg twice daily and don't notice any side effects apart from not sleeping that well. Plan to stop at the 3 year mark to see if i can do without. The 3 seizures that i got were tonic-clonic with total loss of memory and "waking up in the hospital".
Tengo 48 años y me dio una convulsion generalizada con mordedura de lengua y terrible y enseguida me dieron lacosamida con una sola convulsion era correcto o tenia que esperar a una segunda convulsion?
My mother has arthritis and she visited rheumatologist today, he prescribed her lacosamide idk why, can u please tell bcz she doesn't have epilepsy or anything like this
On Lacosamide 100mg 2x day for the last two weeks and I can honestly say, I now constantly feel like I've just been dragged across concrete... Constantly tired, dry mouth, dizzy, weak, sore joints, and no drive or motivation. No seizures though, whoopdeedoo
I'm switching from Keppra to lacosamide. The Keppra has been a nightmare like all the things you have said. I'm hoping against hope lacosamide won't do me dirty like the Keppra.
I felt like I was in a fog and was having horrible short term memory issues the entire time I was on it. This is my first week entirely off of it, I'm wondering how long it takes to get out of my system entirely.
I started to have more seizures after about five years my doctor increased my Lacosamide from 150 to 200 mg. Twice A day it's only been about two days but It seems I have been feeling the feeling more should is this normal should I just give it more time.
Hi doctor I have been taking lacosimide for many years now how I still have focal absence seizures approximately every 2 weeks. What would you suggest?
I'm really not sure if I should be taking 100mg twice a day or 150mg twice a day. I only had seizures about once or twice a month and that's because I once had a brain tumor removed. I don't actually have epilepsy. Any suggestions? Thank you.
Lacosimide is the best working medicaton but i do have blurred vision and rapid heart rate that lasts up to 1.5 hrs sometimes it scares me somtimes. im not sure if because its a speeding up of my heart and not slowing it that maybe the heart issue is sothing else.
Happens to me as well! My heart rate stays high for at least 3-4 hours. Then I become very jittery. Then I feel anxiety, anxious then I feel auras after. But I’ve had allergic reactions to 5 different seizure medications.
1 more question Dr.. my son had absence seizure and myoclonic since 2018 within seconds to 2 minutes. he was on keppra and lamotrigine but the seizures and aura getting worse and turned to tonic clonic. Now he's taking valproate 200mg 3x a day, phenytoin 100mg 3x a day and if seizure happen has to add diazepam 3x on the very day. since last july he has no more absence seizures, now it turns to myclonic to tonic clonic between 4 to 5 minutes which the seizure worsen. but the auras has much lessen also the eeg result wave getting much better. if you are his doctor...what type of anti seizure medications will you advise? Thanks for your kindness.
I just started lacosamide a couple days ago but there are some side effects. My memory has gotten worse, my vision has gotten blurry, I can’t walk steadily. There’s random hand jerks. This to be known I have absence seizures so when I have seizures I have an aura of nausea and stare off into space for a couple seconds. But things have gotten worse. Maybe I haven’t been on the medication long enough to really judge it but the ones that I have been on didn’t have side effects like this.
Hi Dr. Danoun- my daughter has taken 6ml/2 Keppra and now started Vimpat 2.5/2 and every to increase the then the goal is to stop Keppra after that, my question is 6ml twice a day can we reduce while we are increasing weekly Vimpat medication. My daughter is an autistic she can’t talk. Thanks
I can't provide medical advice online.. Please discuss with your neurologist.. In general, we increase the new medication to a reliable dose then slowly taper down the older one
Sir you mentioned that in generalized Epilepsy it is used as adjunctive... I am asking can it be used alone in infrequent gtcs ??? Please tell@@DrOmarDanoun
My son (18) takes 100 mg twice per day. He has autism and struggles to communicate. For this reason, I do not know exactly how it is affecting him as he cannot express these feelings. If someone can tell me precisely how it makes them feel that would help me to understand the medication a bit better. I don’t really like medication‘s in general but I am forced to give him this one to stop seizures. Has anyone had any luck with a ketogenic diet as an alternative?
My 9yo daughter is currently in the hospital because due to COVID and an inability to tolerate her epilepsy medications by mouth. Because her current medications: Briviact, Rufinamide, Epidiolex, and Clobazam-are not available in IV form, the doctors decided on Lacosamide. My daughter has thus far has been medication resistant, resulting in the placement of a VNS about a month ago. Previous medication’s include Depakote, valproic acid, Keppra, lorazepam, and clonazepam. Her seizures are generalized-focal and drop only, 2-15 seconds in length, and with a frequency of roughly every 20 seconds to 2 minutes. So, hundreds per day. Here is the question: Is it possible that even though all of these other medication combinations failed, that lacosamide is some sort of miracle drug for her? If so, how does it work differently from the others that would cause such a DRAMATIC decrease in her seizure activity. In the past three days, I have seen only a handful of seizures per day. How is this possible?? Any guidance you can offer is very much appreciated! I am going to watch the medication resistant video as you suggested and I will also post this comment/question there. Thank you!!!!
Fingers crossed she does well on lacosamide. Chances are low in drug resistant epilepsy though. Briviact is available iv but maybe the hospital does not have it
I take that...and it doesn't work on me. I cannot tolerate as much as the doctor wanted me to take. I cannot work as well on it either. Its a controlled substance..
Can I take Lacosamide alone for General Seizures? Or am I running the risk of making seizures worse? I believe you said sodium channel blocking medication can make General Seizures Worse. Is lacosamide one of these medicines? I had a Tonic-Clonic Seizure recently but my doctor said that we don’t know which seizures I have yet and that this medication is a pretty broad spectrum medicine. Whatever that means.
I take 250mg of generic vimpat (lacosamide) twice a day I switched when the generic came out and had zero issues. Also take 1000mg of depakote twice a day with it
They started me on 100mg 2 times a day and it makes me so dizzy, i think more dizzy than any of the other drugs. But thats better than excessive vomiting from the other drugs. Ive only been taking it for a week though.
@@DrOmarDanoun they started me on it in the er after a bad seizure cluster, didn’t seem like much i could do except go with what the er doctors were doing. Ty for reply :)

I was taking 50mg twice daily along with trileptal. it was working to a degree but my skin hurt to much. Nevere heard of anyone else having similar issues with skin nodules.

Overall, I give it a 8/10
Thank you for sharing your experience
I appreciate you giving your experience. I've been slowly weaning off Keppra not cause of rage but the extreme anxiety and panic attacks. Sad but I'd rather deal with seizures then a life filled with unnecessary fear
I felt like I was starving to death on vimpat. I mean such painful hunger pains
I took this and literally felt like o was starving to death
I've been on vimpat for 2 years and developed anxiety.
Correct
Your one word answer doesn't address the seriousness of this issue.
Oi minha filha começou a tomar a lacosamida agora também junto com os outros remédios que você toma também está tendo efeito positivo em você
Antiseizure medications can be used together. The rest has to be determined by the neurologist
Hey Doc, if lacosimide is working for seizures but causing nightmares, how do I deal with this? I wake up with a speeding heart rate in the middle of a dream where I usually think I’m dead.
I stopped taking vimpat xr because I would get REALLY dizzy to where I would lose my balance and fall within an hour after taking it.
I take lacoset with in 3 years.I take 100 mg everyday 4 tablets. Without 2+2 morning & evening. I fell sick.what should good for me now?
Lacosimide was doing well 4 a long while I had 2 taken off it cause up creasing it I was having real bad dizzy spells that I could stand up and when I did stand up I fell and bash my head
I have been taking it about five years. I have to take it with Oxtellar and Fycompa as well.

Does it cause wheezing? Would the wheezing eventually go away?
Hi Dr. Danoun, there is no other brand of Lacosamide, right? my daughter is taking it for 2 years , 100 mg, 3 times a day. toger with Leveget,Lamictal, and Rivotril, but still she has no seizre free day. I ask because its expensive for 9 tablets a day. Thank you
Yes there is brand and generic now. They are the same
Hi Doctor Danuon, I am epileptic and I have been taking vimpat and tegretol for more than a year already .I feel a very bad chest discomfort. I feel like my heart is being squeezed. Sometimes, it comes with memories and sometimes without. The one with memories always comes before seizures and the one without it come multiple times a day. can please help me
Can you take Valium with Lacosamide?
Suddenly got seizures at the age of 56, maybe my Crohn's has to do with it. They never found a cause and i have been taking Vimpat since 1,5 years now after trying Depakote (which turned me into a zombie). I take 50mg twice daily and don't notice any side effects apart from not sleeping that well. Plan to stop at the 3 year mark to see if i can do without. The 3 seizures that i got were tonic-clonic with total loss of memory and "waking up in the hospital".
Tengo 48 años y me dio una convulsion generalizada con mordedura de lengua y terrible y enseguida me dieron lacosamida con una sola convulsion era correcto o tenia que esperar a una segunda convulsion?

circumcision is safe in epilepsy. It does not need anesthesia to be done.

I suggest you to follow up with your neurologist for evaluation and treatment.. Thank you
Hello, my son is 9 years old, and he has epilepsy and he is on vimpat 100mg, but he is having some problems with the medication
I'm really not sure if I should be taking 100mg twice a day or 150mg twice a day. I only had seizures about once or twice a month and that's because I once had a brain tumor removed. I don't actually have epilepsy. Any suggestions? Thank you.
@sumantripathi7684 I don't understand your language.. I can't even translate that.
Was ist der unterschied zwieschen Vimpat und Zonisamid?
Lacosimide is the best working medicaton but i do have blurred vision and rapid heart rate that lasts up to 1.5 hrs sometimes
it scares me somtimes. im not sure if because its a speeding up of my heart and not slowing it that maybe the heart issue is sothing else.
There is interactions with the heart as we explained in the video.. Discuss with your neurologist and heart doctor
I can't provide medical advice.. You can review the video on generalized epilepsy for information on the treatment
Can it be used alone in infrequent generalized Epilepsy??????
Yes we mentioned this in the video

My son (18) takes 100 mg twice per day. He has autism and struggles to communicate. For this reason, I do not know exactly how it is affecting him as he cannot express these feelings. If someone can tell me precisely how it makes them feel that would help me to understand the medication a bit better. I don’t really like medication‘s in general but I am forced to give him this one to stop seizures. Has anyone had any luck with a ketogenic diet as an alternative?
Yes and see the video on keto.. Called best diet for epilepsy
Is Keppra and this put together with success?
It can be combined yes. They both have a different mechanism
I take vimpat and keppra, I’m 15 months grand mal free but still having focal aware seizures.
My seizures have gotten worse with Lacosamide as the only anti-seizure medication. Went from 4-5 a year to weekly.
I take 250mg of generic vimpat (lacosamide) twice a day I switched when the generic came out and had zero issues. Also take 1000mg of depakote twice a day with it
Glad to hear that
They started me on 100mg 2 times a day and it makes me so dizzy, i think more dizzy than any of the other drugs. But thats better than excessive vomiting from the other drugs. Ive only been taking it for a week though.
Mentioned the right way of starting the medication to decrease the side effects in the video.. Discuss with your neurologist
@@DrOmarDanoun they started me on it in the er after a bad seizure cluster, didn’t seem like much i could do except go with what the er doctors were doing. Ty for reply :)
