Let’s see how many clubs line up to buy Maguire. Antony hasn’t been great, but hasn’t been poor either. Take away the financial aspect here (Maguire’s 80 and Antony’s 90) and still Maguire hasn’t been what United fans expected he would be in a United shirt. The nuance of the conversation behind the January transfer spend is that Man Utd had injuries to Eriksen, Van De Beek and Martial.Ronaldo had left and Greenwoods future is still unknown. So you have a void in the squad, which has subsequently left ten Hag short.
Bringing in Sabitzer and Weghorst was not the solution that ten Hag wanted, because he’s trying to compete to win trophies. Now, Sabitzer has been excellent, but Wout hasn’t scored goals. Appreciate the £220m spent in by the summer, to try to rebuild and add depth to the squad, but it’s still a huge task to get the squad to a level where it can compete for the PL.
Regarding Antony, Simon is right about his contribution this season. At times he has played well, but he’s not produced to the levels he perhaps could have. He has shown more maturity as the season has progressed and his performances as a whole have improved. He’s working hard and improving, I suspect we’ll see a better version of him next season.

I love how Simon always seems like he feels he is making a point. Like he said something very original every time. I mean, Chelsea spent $500m this season alone and on top of that sacking and hiring 2 managers. Further, Man U always pockets the profits from each season and throws more debt into getting new players. Other successful teams don't do that. And we're run so poorly too, Anthony was bought $30m over because we waited 4 months to buy him. He's not an $80m-90m player. No one said he was. He only cost us that much bc of bad business.

It all depends on where the squad is at, Simon. If it’s not good enough, and more importantly the culture of said squad is fragile af, then maybe £208 mill* (not 220) isn’t enough. Things happen throughout the season and ETH was specifically referring to the JANUARY window as not being backed, which it fuking bloody well wasn’t. Doesn’t matter how much you put in in the summer, if you lose ronaldo and Greenwood by January and don’t replace either of them (weghorst is not a replacement, clearly) and rely solely on a guy who’s injured more than he’s fit and arguably isn’t even a 9 himself (martial), then you haven’t been backed. This highlights how incredibly brilliant Rashfords goals were for us. Without him, we’d be in spurs place.
Also, sometimes big money signings don’t always work out, which is glaringly obvious with our club over the past decade. But it happens to everyone. Crespo, Torres, Pepe, lukaku, schevchenko, Veron. There’s been many and it isn’t solely down to management as to why they don’t work out, obviously.
