I love your collection! I have the Hyrule edition (dual IPS) and the SNES edition (dual TN). I actually prefer the SNES one since my Hyrule one has a blue/green tint and the TN one is a little brighter and normal colored. Also, it’s not a huge deal to me either way.
I know lol. I bought a used dual-TN OG regular 3DS 4-5 years ago and that was fine. I upgraded to the New 3DS XL last December and it was an IPS-top. They both seem fine and getting plenty of burn to this day. I guess I'm just not as meticulous as Erica lol.

soridosuneku you can see it in the video when she compares two models, but anyhow IPS have better colours and viewing angles, TN though is cheaper and has higher refresh rate, which isn't bad for games, so I wouldn't worry whichever you have.
Wow I must have gotten just stupid ridiculously lucky. I just went down to Game Stop and purchased a Black New 3DS XL. I didn't even realize that they where so hit and miss. I looked and my screens are both IPS, nothing under them like gunk or dirt. They have the same color temperature and have no dead pixels. I would never have guessed this was such a big issue.
I got dual IPS screens on my 3DS. (Which I am using right now!) To be honest, I don't really care. I've had this New 3DS XL for over 2 years and fun is fun. I wouldn't mind if I got a TN screen. Just as long as I can play my games.
Personally I would just be okay with an IPS top screen, even with 1 dead pixel. I can get your obsession of having a "perfect" one though, I've seen people return $2000 guitars because there was a little bit of paint on the binding in a spot you can't even see during use and you could easily scrape it off using a razor yourself. Quality is important!
@@alexrobles9708 Get the 2ds xl if you want something budget, its $99 at walmart rn. If you want the 3d, go with the New 3ds or New 3ds xl. I would get the New 3ds xl cause its easier to find. And I would avoid the older models, not that they're bad it's just that the boost in power is worth it for games and homebrew.
The screens are very close in quality and if you don't specifically know about it you very very likely never would find out that they used different screens. And you only really notice the difference when you look from a sharp angle onto your console and not really when you play with the system in a normal way like it was intended and the reason why they used different screens likely was because the 3ds was a mass product it sold about 80 million consoles and to keep up with production in those quantities you probably need different sources of supply and so they likely could not keep the production up with only the IPS screens. But nowadys years after the production of those systems stopped the only really thing that matters is anyways if the system still works or not
God damn this comment section is a shitfest. I see a lot of children or people who can't afford these things don't undertsand what collecting or a what a hobby is. Don't feel 2 bad, I own 7 collectible new Nintendo 3DSXLs, 2, which I play regularly, despite owning a Switch, lol. Appreciate learning about differences between screens & color temperature, which I was clueless about, your video is quite informative, thanks. 😁🤙🏼
I like this video, but I gotta say, I don't notice a different. The way I play games is just me being too zoned out to notice something like screens, but that's just me.
Bailey Alicen same. Once I start doing something on my pc or watching tv I concentrate waay to much on what I'm doing so I never notice the screen nor do I pay any attention to my surrondings
Bailey Alicen that's the norm though. So yeah, not just you but the general. People who obsessed with details that barely affects them in any way are those that are not normal. They are in the same level as those collector's.
+Fawad Bilgrami I am very happy for you that you don't notice the small details. I wish it weren't the case for me. It's a curse. But if I didn't notice all the details I would not be a reviewer either lol.
Once you have played with a dual IPS for an extended amount of time you will not be able to unsee the difference. Turn back while you're still satisfied with TN before it's too late.
This is the story of my life when it comes to technology. It all started when I was like 13-14 and got a new CRT for my PC that had a green tint to the blacks and it's been downhill from that. I don't think I've owned a PC screen or a TV(LCD or CRT!) that haven't annoyed me in some way. I gotta give props to Apple tho, pretty much all their products have immaculate screens. Even the old iMac I bought for fun a couple of years back has a CRT that looks amazing and is surprisingly well calibrated.
I have three 3DS systems (two original model, two 2DS. All aside from my launch 3DS purchased at a local pawn shop) and am glad to hear that the screens being inconsistent quality and temperature is actually a normal thing. For anyone curious why I have four systems, I've spent quite a bit on digital games and the shoulder buttons on my launch model started giving out. Unfortunately each of my backups have some imperfections, be it creaking or overly clicky buttons/hinges, a super scratched up screen, or debis under the screen and a warm screen tint (although I am 99% sure that last one is a refurbished model)
Here I am just happy with the one I have. Not noticed any slight problems and if there was I wouldnt care because I just want to have fun... I think you're just picky
Wait you seriously don't think YT is a job? Anytime people say that, I feel like surely it's jealousy that someone can work doing something fun, with no boss, and make a good living. A lot of people work from home for themselves and enjoy their jobs, go tell successful self employed IT gurus, art/crafters, etc that they don't have jobs and watch them laugh in your face.
Pink Coffee i get that shes youtuber and its the way of her to earn money but saying that “i have tn and not ips so would buy 3ds till i have the perfect 3ds” as a reason is just unacceptable and triggering to alot of people who cant even afford one
Honestly I get where you're coming from and I would never buy that many 3DS personally, but they aren't that expensive for people on a high income and people waste money on equally dumb and more expensive shit all the time and no one complains. The people complaining are mostly jealous/entitled 14 year olds who can't handle that someone is on a much higher income bracket than them, yet they've never/barely ever worked. 'Triggering' also isn't really the right word for these people, they are not PTSD sufferers with trauma because they don't own a 3DS.
This is my answer to someone saying to just weight them to find out if it is IPS, since IPS is supposedly heaver. It's NOT consistent and I would not trust that, even if some had success! "Hey there, don't suggest this to people. It doesn't work consistently. Nope. If you are lucky to find many of them from the same lot and same exact model, then maybe. Just maybe. The assumption is that the IPS screens are heavier and this has worked for a few lucky people. But guess what? I tried the same thing. I even got a gram scale and went around measuring. You know what I found? Due to whatever component differences (even in the same lot who knows if there are some tiny differences that can contribute to weight differences) or weight in plastic it's not always true, even in the same lot! Even two TN models in the same lot had a few gram differences! And the clincher, I have a dual IPS Hyrule edition that is lighter by several grams from my dual TN Pikachu version. Interesting. It means there are too many uncontrolled variables and I would not stake my life on it." You can go around with a gram scale but I preferred not to mention it as it's not consistent and good luck finding a large enough lot to find any meaningful differences! You can argue with me of you want. Go try it for yourself. I just hope you don't get screwed.
Erica Griffin i dont know if i should wait in till the Nintendo switch comes out or just buy the New 3Ds XL now What do you think Pls answer😊 p.s your awsome!
I'm SUPER happy to have found this video. I legit didn't know about the different screens and I happen to have an IPS top screen. Almost got rid of the 3DS just cuz I wanted a new one, but I'm gonna hold onto it and fix it up. It's a keeper now that I know the value. Thanks Erica!
I have a new 3DS XL that has a top IPS screen and a bottom TN screen and I'm happy with that because I don't use the bottom screen alot and TN screens save battery life :)
Look, I'm a real heavy perfectionist, but I also acknowledge that video game consoles are solely meant to have video games played on them. And while playing, you obviously get immersed into the game, and become concentrated on it, this way almost ANY aesthetic problem with the console is not there when playing. As an example, my switch has a dead pixel in it's bottom right corner, but I really don't care about it, because when I play a game it's like it's not even there. Do you see my point? Ps: 3:05 SERIOUSLY??? Who is ever going to notice that?? You won't see it unless you're deliberately looking for it!
Could you stop making multiple comments about "first world problems"? It's annoying. People want to get most from the money that they spend, and when they don't, they obviously feel sad, because that's money down the drain. Also when you start taking notice of problems like these in a screen, it's not a first world problem; it's a medical condition.
I bet that 99% of 3DS owners don't even know about this or are fine with what screen they got. And you even said it in the end, it's almost like a medical condition being this overly sensitive. Being such a perfectionist will only sabotage you and waste your time.
Yes, this isn't a life or death issue or something that the layperson is even aware of (I certainly wasn't aware of it, though I don't have a 3DS to begin with), however, there really is no excuse for unlabeled differences between screen types for the same model of the same units or for the fact that having dirt and dust under the screen is apparently fairly common on new units. That's just Nintendo showing shoddy internal standards and regulations over their own manufacturing, which is disappointing from a company renowned for the build quality of their products.
You wrote 2 long paragraphs just to argue about this? I wouldn't give two shits if my lobster was burnt, you can't replicate something like that perfectly every single time. Go see a psychiatrist if you're that obsessed with being such a perfectionist cause you'd probably have OCD/anxiety issues at that point.
I work for one of the biggest IT company in the world so let me clarify something Every company does this, all manufacturers have multiple suppliers which will all create the required component to the correct specifications as advertised. Some may be a little different than others but it is still sufficient as advertised and is not ''worse''. IPS panels have a lot of issues too btw :P This does not affect use in anyway the quality is still the same. I can tell you right now every macbook, every samsung notebook does this (same with phones) I would just ignore it and move on, its within normal use (dust is different though, thats a manufacturer's defect)
I can appreciate that there are different supplies but one would think there would be a certain level of consistency. There should be a spec for screen type and color calibration.
Wow, this seems like a class action waiting to happen. (Not the product defects, but the fact that Nintendo is selling units with different screens under one model without informing the consumers.) I'm super surprised they haven't been sued yet.
Make sure to stay tuned for the result of my Galaxy Style's return. What do you think will happen? I am pretty sure I won't get what I asked for but I won't get the opportunity if I don't try!
Erica Griffin Hey Erica different topic but do you currently own a media streaming set top box or Amazon fire stick? Are you a regular cable television subscriber?

@@MurraySoles Devices like these are always about compromises. If cheaper parts are used, that often means it'll be cheaper. If better or limited parts are used, it'll be pricier. It's a good thing to be an educated consumer and learn about the products you buy but the average consumer will just look at the price, buy the cheapest deal and be happy with it. If Nintendo wanted to, they could have made you a top of the line 3DS at 500-600$ but nobody would buy it since most people see it as a toy and aren't willing to spend that much for entertainment. ~150$ for that kind of device when it launch is a great value even if the screen has bad view angle, contrast, brightness or has some dead pixels.
@Sally Smith but it's not hidden info, who buys any tech gadget anymore, without doing any kind of research, if you think that the bbb doesn't force companies to disclose all information somewhere, then that's not how business works. that's like saying when the fda forces companies to put nutritional facts on food, they hide all the bad ingredients.
133faceman and isn't it a bargain? She got much more than that in the end :D Anger, disappointment, hope, and discovered a budding OCD (OK it's not ocd I know I know)
I’ve had to revise this comment multiple times because this logic baffles me. Why would you choose to gamble when you’re insulted by the concept? That’s like getting on forums telling people to boycott loot boxes but then turning around and buying 30 loot boxes right after
You're talking Nintendo products... this happens all the time, people go nuts over stock, then they have it in spades, then they go nuts... rinse repeat.
this video is amazing! i wasn't expecting anything interesting when seeing this video recommended to me, but watching this opened my eyes. Nintendo often does like playing little tricks on us... I didn't even know there were different kinds of screens! the whole time, you got my attention with the way you spoke and represented yourself and the issues. i have two 3DS XLs. my mom got me one and my dad got me one separately for Christmas on accident.. i'm going to test both of them out together and see if there's any noticeable differences!
The Zelda gold one is the only consistent one, and my favorite new 3ds. The Hyrule Shield edition 2DS is really good tho, TN screens tho of course. At this point I think all 3ds and 2ds’s are TN. Eh, it still looks good and isn’t as bad for 2ds systems. TN really only messes with the 3D a bit but otherwise its fine, and inconsequential on 2DS systems.
This video totally saved me. I learned today that all 3ds are different by screen ips and tn models. I WAS ABOUT TO BUY A 3ds This week. Now I have to look for the best 3ds for the best looking sceen for my eyes. Btw... I subscribed to your channel.
I'm truly sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the chances you'll get that Galaxy edition back are very slim. I would love to hear what happens though! I personally have the Zelda edition "Hyrule" from Gamestop, and it's the best by far. But yes, Nintendo's quality control throughout the life of the DS has always been all over the place. I truly hope we see the end of that, as Nintendo, to my understanding, has contracted a brand new vendor for screen and assemblies.
+ryan lowe you think they won't give back my unit at all? Or just a different Galaxy style? I will know. Mine had some distinct markings that I wasn't particularly fond of but were not defects. I will be happy if they give me a different one lol. A long as it's a Galaxy Style and they won't just give me something else without my consent. I would tell them just to send it back unchanged.
Erica Griffin Sorry, to clarify. They rarely have "collectors" models on hand for replacement. You one hundred percent will get back a working unit. But the Galaxy model is a long shot. I know. I've played this game before. :(
FusionFall Maina A stock basic color. Red, Blue, Black. The ones they have the most allocation available for. From what I understand those displays are sealed. Instead of prying them open and cleaning they will more than likely replace the full unit.
I think I fall into the population that just takes what they gets and enjoys it. I must say I did enjoy your video, it was very informing, so thank you for posting it. Also, as an fyi, in New Leaf Welcome Amiibo, I've found at least 3 different 3DS that you can collect, better get started.
i love how half the comments are people saying that your so ungrateful or your crazy when i have personally had either similar or other problems. my first 2 3ds had issues with the right and left trigger both of them being brand new; after a year it would just give out. my third one had dead pixels which i returned to get my 4th new 3ds which has an ips top screen. all of these people are just butt hurt Nintendo fanboys who think your crazy. if i spends 200 dollars i expect something with good quality not a broken mess.
Also it does not matter if you love the 3D on because your probably gonna look at it directly anyway. So displays don't matter to me.

+ Calebfire10 It is not just about the viewing angles. It is about the quality. The difference are simmilar like the comparison between an very old LCD TV and a modern UHD HDR screen. The difference between TN and IPS are massive. It makes the games way more immersive and give you a much better gaming experience. It is like watching a movie on an old iPhone 1 smartphone and then switching to a iPhoneX, Galaxy S9 to watch the movie on. It is just a dick move from Nintendo to sell so different models of the 3DS with massive quality changes to the exactly same price. Besides the fact, that the system is way too overpriced anyways.
As long as the system works I’m fine. I don’t have time to worry about the small things. Most people don’t. Good on you for having the money and time to care.
To me it sounds like there's a high defect rate and they should go back to the drawing board. I'd return them all to send them a message that they need to improve the systems. I don't know why manufacturers make one sku with different types of panels. I've briefly faced these issues with TVs and PC monitors...crazy.
Oh man, it's totally woth it. I had 2DS before and it was sooo bad comparing to New 3DS. 2DS is uncomfortable to hold, you have to streatch your fingers to reach shoulder buttons and the screen seems washed out. If you have enough money go for it.
I found out that Switch is not going to be backwards compatible. At least for a long time until they update it. It will only run games designed for that hardware. It will probably get pokemon stars though.
Just because it was uncomfortable for you doesn't mean its uncomfortable for others. I find it to be more comfortable. The only difference between the 2ds and 3ds is the 3d aspect and the material used.
I repair these for a living, even starting out they aren't that difficult; with a few hours behind you and a video tutorial its not that hard. If you can afford 7 3DSs you can afford two hours and a cheap set of tiny tools.
+BananaPhoneBanana and I suppose you have a clean room as well to keep the dust out from the top plastic panel too? I don't. I can't stand dust particles and that's just what I've always gotten when installing a new lens over screens. I've done LOTS of mods and the DS has always been a pain in the ass to repair. I'm trying my luck this time around or having Nintendo do it. I can resell units I don't like, as they are new, untouched and with warranty, plus they only gain value. What value will they have if messed with? Please don't recommend hard mods to people.
Erica Griffin Ive never once had dust in a DS, thats not even possible because of how closed it is. How informed. Its not hard to do just time consuming. If you wanna waste money playing the lottery go ahead. IPS is more desirable, people pay more for them on eBay and similar sites. Clearly people want it.
I'm sorry, but this is just excessive and unnecessary. Also, there is no way for an unit to be perfect, there will always be a problem. It's a vicious circle.
The model 1000 Vita has an OLED. The 2000 Vita has a moderately less pretty LCD. As a Vita owner, though, I haven't really heard of any sort of inconsistent construction standards between units of the same model. As Nintendo's main bread and butter which they provide tons of support to, I'm really surprised and disappointed to hear that they didn't keep a tighter rein on the 3DS' construction and quality control. Also, while it hasn't been nearly as successful as Sony would have liked, mostly due to mismanagement and an almost total lack of advertising on Sony's part, I've been really happy with the Vita the entire time due to the near constant stream of great releases and good integration into the Sony Ecosystem (Cross Buy, Cross Play, PS Now, etc...), for what it's worth. 2016 was amazing on that front, and it looks like 2017 is going to have a ton of awesome games coming to our as well.
lnsflare1 : That's right. Vita's catalog, while could be better, is great as it is. People who say "it has no games" just like to talk shit about consoles they don't own.
I went through the same thing. Eventually got a nice Dual IPS New 3DS Pokemon edition on Ebay. It took a couple weeks of obsessive, daily hunting and messaging sellers... educating them on the difference between the TN and IPS to convince them to take weird photos of their 3DS from different angles. It was an awful experience in many ways... I kept telling myself "It's not a big deal... It's just a stupid game handheld..." and I'd end up staying up late, losing sleep just obsessing over it... These stupid things cause so much ridiculous anxiety.... it's insane... I also hope the Switch doesn't have so many manufacturing discrepancies either... I don't think the Wii U gamepads have any sort of lottery... I believe they were all IPS. I'm guessing Nintendo will go with IPS to make it a good functional experience in 'table-top' mode where two people would be playing multiplayer games , looking at the screen from different angles. Either way, I've reserved two Switch consoles just in case... Less than a month away.... guess we'll find out. Will you be doing a Switch unboxing video? Would love to get your insanely critical eye to give some impressions on it.

G V the system in a 2DS is very fragile, so if you’re a clumsy person then getting a 2DS would be a waste of money
@@poopenundfarten902 so now, im want to buy my first 3ds so what version should i get?
I collect Nintendo things too, and I know I can use the money on something better but I don't because It brings me happiness and I worked hard to get my collectibles. Saturn Jr Right here, however, I see a person, who can’t accept other people’s thoughts. People have the right to criticize, and may find things unnecessary, like buying several versions of the same product. MonsterDroiid No sabía que te podría encontrar en un video de Erica xD
MonsterDroiid the switch has an amazingly good screen
switch uses a nice IPS panel, but i wish amoled would hurry up and get better with burn in so they can be used for games
Otie64 i wish it had oled but thats too expensive, maybe for like an xl?
Otie64 lets hope more company work with samsung or lg since their amoled and oled are one of the best. And believe me or not my friend galaxy note 1 the original still has no burn or dead pixel issue till now its almost 5-6yrs so i believe samsung newer amoled ready to use with switch or other device imo

informative but quite useless
Idk how to tell the difference. My screens are bright and all the pixels are there. Looks great to me!
Exactly.
Bailey Alicen that's the norm though. So yeah, not just you but the general. People who obsessed with details that barely affects them in any way are those that are not normal. They are in the same level as those collector's.
Bailey Alicen foucking the same

Erica Griffin yeah it is a curse. But looks like you have passed it on. I am already checking the ones I have. Oh darn!!!
Once you have played with a dual IPS for an extended amount of time you will not be able to unsee the difference. Turn back while you're still satisfied with TN before it's too late.
Xenoraze my eyes are used to Gameboy so I'm good,
Thank you so much for making this video. I adore your passion for finding the best screen. I feel you’ll be able to remove the dust yourself.
I say this with respect and admiration, but you have uhm... issues.
She's a technology reviewer, it's her job to be picky.
Well, if you guys don't care if you get worse Displays for the same price...
This doesn't make anyone picky, who wants the best quality for his money.
It means there are too many uncontrolled variables and I would not stake my life on it."
You can go around with a gram scale but I preferred not to mention it as it's not consistent and good luck finding a large enough lot to find any meaningful differences! You can argue with me of you want. Go try it for yourself. I just hope you don't get screwed.

I have a new 3DS XL that has a top IPS screen and a bottom TN screen and I'm happy with that because I don't use the bottom screen alot and TN screens save battery life :)
The galaxy style is out of stock? Since when? My local Walmart has had them for months
Airsnark Gaming true

How much? My local Walmart has them for $199.98.
I found one at a pawn last week and was able to get it down to 100 dollars. I happy because it's in very pristine conditions.
Not anymore.
Yeah, you're way too sensitive... I would just be happy with dual IPS pannels, colour temperature doesn't really matter.
It's a medical condition that needs to be attended to. I was haunted by the TN screens on the "old" 3ds too much.
I work for one of the biggest IT company in the world so let me clarify something
Every company does this, all manufacturers have multiple suppliers which will all create the required component to the correct specifications as advertised. Some may be a little different than others but it is still sufficient as advertised and is not ''worse''. IPS panels have a lot of issues too btw :P
This does not affect use in anyway the quality is still the same. I can tell you right now every macbook, every samsung notebook does this (same with phones)
I would just ignore it and move on, its within normal use (dust is different though, thats a manufacturer's defect)
I can appreciate that there are different supplies but one would think there would be a certain level of consistency. There should be a spec for screen type and color calibration.
Yeah, but you expect similar specs, for example you can have different ips OR tn panel providers. The difference between them is huge.
Thankyou for making me find so many things wrong with my 3ds that I never otherwise would have noticed. Highly considering selling it now
Wow, this seems like a class action waiting to happen.

Issues that the average consumer will never notice because we don't all buy the same console 7 times to compare.
"the random person is only going to buy 1 lul so lets not make sure the quality is even across the board and send out inferior products"

Both screens on my Samus Edition are so vibrant and the viewing angles are awesome. I think they are the IPS screens.
I never knew about this and it's disgusting.

ryan lowe what did they send you then?
FusionFall Maina A stock basic color. Red, Blue, Black. The ones they have the most allocation available for. From what I understand those displays are sealed. Instead of prying them open and cleaning they will more than likely replace the full unit.
ryan lowe why do you have so many?
I think you are just way too picky. But I hope your galaxy version will satisfy your requirement
I just buy it and play it. I don't mind about TN or IPS panels

It is not just about the viewing angles.
Majora's mask edition NEW XL is the best build so far. Duel IPS and has the new super stead 3D and the extra joystick. Never had a single problem
To me it sounds like there's a high defect rate and they should go back to the drawing board. I'd return them all to send them a message that they need to improve the systems.
I don't know why manufacturers make one sku with different types of panels. I've briefly faced these issues with TVs and PC monitors...crazy.

I have a 2ds I really want a new 3ds xl but I dont want to pay over $200 and not know whats gonna be wrong with it
Oh man, it's totally woth it. I had 2DS before and it was sooo bad comparing to New 3DS. 2DS is uncomfortable to hold, you have to streatch your fingers to reach shoulder buttons and the screen seems washed out. If you have enough money go for it.
Switch is a different case but for now I want a high end pokemon machine
if you want just buy the new 3ds xl i have the pokemon sun and moon version and i love it or just wait for the switch
Before watching: "Because you have too much money?"
After watching: "Because you have too much money."
This was super interesting. It makes me want to search for this on my own!

Joseph Mitchell i have the launch switch
My old 3DS xl (that I sold) had no debris under any screen, they were both LCD and had had no weird colour tints
I honestly never knew that there was different types of screens installed in the 3DS. Great info and now I will inspect them like nobody's business.
You could've ordered IPS screens and put them in yourself
+BananaPhoneBanana it's not that simple actually. Good luck doing it without causing damage in some way.
It is possible. Don't mess with people, and listen to the OP

I'm sorry, but this is just excessive and unnecessary. Also, there is no way for an unit to be perfect, there will always be a problem. It's a vicious circle.
@Sally Smith redefining what a word means, simply to suit your argument, does not in fact change the actual meaning of the word.

stfu please*. Be polite lol
Alternatively, you could just learn how to swap screens.
There is a chance you will end destroying shit trying to learn though. So you will buy a few 3DS like that anyway.
