So Many Christmas Carols!: A Special Sesame Street Christmas (1978)

- This video also covers "A Sesame Street Christmas Carol" (2006), but focuses mostly on the 70's special. It's a trip to Bizarro Sesame Street, where there aren't too many regular Muppets or humans, mostly opting to focus on guest stars instead. It's incredibly weird, and kind of fun, in a tacky sort of way.
RIP Caroll Spinney
(I promise, Caroll, you were the best part of this special.) - Кино
Thank you Carol Spinney for your wonderful performances as Big Bird and Oscar.
Salute to Caroll Spinney. We love you Big Bird, Oscar.
We will all miss Caroll greatly. R.I.P.
May Caroll Spinney Rest In Peace
What a nice tribute to the late Carroll Spinney
"Oscar can be rude and mean, but fundamentally he has a heart of gold." ~Carol Spinney
It's true
Thank You, Caroll Spinney, for entertaining our childhood on Sesame Street for over 50 years!
RIP Carroll, thanks for everything.
Thank You, Mr. Spinney. You were a massive part of my childhood.
Both 78 Sesame Street specials were both Oscar Heavy, this one Oscar hogs up the whole special totally upstaging Leslie Uggums, just like Big Bird upstaged Leslie on the Muppet Show!
Christmas Eve On Sesame Street is one of my traditions. I put it on while wrapping presents or decorating. It's a special that means a lot to me because I had a recorded vhs of it and I watched year round.
Now, in our modern era, we've seen Grouchland and learned more of Grouch society, so, no, Oscar was unlikely to have been a sweet, adorable, lovable baby.
Oscar the Grouch was my earliest comedic influence. When I was diagnosed with autism at a very early age, doctors told my mom that I would likely never talk. Showed them. What helped bring my world into focus and what got me to talking was quoting Oscar's lines. That in turn led to me talking beyond mere mimicry and conversing. Surprisingly my other comedic influences after Oscar happened to be the grouchy types like Donald Duck, Squidward Tentacles, and Red Forman. When Sesame Street announced its first autistic character, I honestly thought Oscar fit the bill, albeit high-functioning, like I became as I got older. I say this because I came across your channel in 2020 and after watching this video, I was reminded of Carroll Spinney's passing, so I wanted to give my two cents on the impact he had on my life.
@KTChamberlain Can you talk with me? Please! I really wanna talk about Oscar with someone. He so unusual character.
Sorry, if I annoying. But I really need talk with someone about Oscar.
Me, going into this video: If this ain't a Carroll Spinney tribute, then I'mma sue.
The Christmas Carol finale was Beautiful
Thank you for doing the update on the passing of Carroll Spinney.
Oddly enough, my favorite part of Christmas Eve on Sesame Street is when Gordon brings Big Bird down from the roof and finds Cookie Monster has eaten the Christmas tree, and he (Cookie) belches throughout the closing credits.
That's because the Douglas Fir gave gives him gas.
@@Joeybagofdonuts76 Nonono. Scotch Pine delicious, but Douglas Fir give HEARTBURN.
@@rdfox76 I knew it was something like that.
Thank you for that wonderful tribute to Carroll Spinney.
Christmas Even on Sesame Street holds a special place in my heart, for being one of my earliest Christmas special memories, as well as the first time I heard the song "Feliz Navidad". A Muppet Family Christmas is also a personal favorite of mine, if only because we'll never get a crossover like that again (seeing Jim Henson at the end always gets me, too). However, I never heard of these Sesame Street Christmas specials... These things are fascinating to look back on, though!
Man I remember A Sesame Street Christmas Carol. I watched it TOO MANY times. My favorite line had to be "And this year I plan to sleep through the whole thing! Fruitcake and all!" I don't know WHY I cracked up every time I heard that, but I did.
Carol Spinney was a wonderful person and he did an outstanding job playing both characters. I think as a kid I first latched onto Oscar and I was always excited for the raw energy and emotion he brought to his scenes, however I think I really am more like Big Bird at heart. I still love both characters! I agree with the sentiment that we will all miss him very much! Glad you added this video to your series!
Oscar wouldn't kidnapp a kitten it feels out of character. He's an antagonists but he is more goofy and fun and the king of sass.
Maybe i wasn't clear on the kitten. Oscar doesn't take it, in both the special and the episode mentioned the kitten just sort of finds him and hangs around.
@@ColinLooksBack oh ok
Thank you for adding the Carroll Spinney tribute at the end. I loved Sesame Street growing up. I plan to re-watch the critically underrated "Follow That Bird" in tribute!
Technically only 2 Muppets appeared as I don't count Barkley as this version used in the special was NOT made by the Henson Workshop.
Oscar is my favorite Sesame Street character so I always like this, but my favorite part is Ethel Merman saying, “wassamatta? Ya look like an idiot!” You could have expected Ethel Merman to call someone an idiot in a Sesame Street Christmas special? It cracked me up as a kid and still does.
That little kitten is so freaking cute!!!🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
8:02-8:18 That’s so earnest, I can’t help but smile.
The 78 Xmas is the only 1 I like. I am now 36 and still watch it every few yrs.
I should mention that in the 1993 episode you were talking about, the kitten’s owner was played by Muppet Performer Louise Gold.
I can't believe I don't remember this. I was a huge sesame street little kid and the 70sxmas record was a yearly staple. The ernie and Bert gift of the magi still gets me, along with keep christmas with you all through the year. The count singing all I want for xmas is my 2 front teeth should be a classic
How on Earth do I have vague memories of this? I was 4. lol. Nice channel, by the way.
3:10 One of my favorite Christmas episodes! I luv that show!
Farewell Carl Thanks for the Memories and frigerator on we're going to miss him what's the better Big Bird puppeteer
i will miss you Carol spinney thanks for all the love and joy you gave me

I remember specifically, Leslie Uggums, and Ethel Merman calling Imogene Coco an idiot.
OMG, how did I miss the news about Mr. Spinney?
You should review “Elmo Saves Christmas”.
Lilly Flynn Exactly!
At least that one is legitimately good.
Wouldnt Oscar fit better in a Grinch role ?
You know, that might actually work.
This is a very insightful review. And I pretty much agree with it. Only one thing, though. You say they should have gotten cat food at the store for Tiny Tim. Well, this was Christmas Eve, remember. So the stores were probably closed. Also, her name is Imogene Coca, with an A.
Interestingly, for all the obscure Carol variations covered in Fred Guida's Christmas Carol adaptation book, this is one he apparently missed. No reference is made to it at all. Of course, the other S.S. carol mentioned here didn't exist at all at the time.
I have vague memories of listening to a cassette tape where Big Bird and Oscar shared their own Christmas stories. Oscar of course, hated Christmas (and sang about it) and talked about how he was reading A Christmas Carol and calling Scrooge his inspiration and then getting mad at the happy ending and wanting to throw it out. (As a book lover, the horror!) But when he was going to give the book to the garbage man, he told Oscar that since it was Christmas, there was no trash pick up, so Oscar got to keep his trash one more day, and that’s what made him decide he loved Christmas.
KITTYYYYY!!!!
I didn’t know Micheal Jackson was in a Sesame Street production.
1.are you sayng the muppets 2011 is bad?2.and big suprise michael jackson DOSENT sing in this on
Saw it once. Carol does his darndest to make the special work, even with strange writing choices. I actually didn't know that the writer actually wrote for Children's Television Workshop, albeit another show, making the characterizations all the more strange. Oscar felt written generalized and not to character. I get the feeling that Carol had to insist that Oscar was always grouchy in response to that Christmas Past segment, and it ended up either in the script that way or he ad libbed it for character consistency. The counterpoint is the actually written by the Sesame Street writers Christmas special at the same time, right down to Oscar's more nuanced acting like a jerk to Big Bird about Santa, but instantly feeling horrible when he finds out that Big Bird went missing as a result. Overall, I would compare this special to the Star Wars Holiday Special, but at least with that one it was spectacularly bad and memorable for being spectacularly bad. This one I just find boring and kind of annoying.
RIP Caroll Spinney
The ghosts in the newer 'oscar as scrouge' look like they were animated by big idea
Reston peace the voice actor of big bird
I DIDN’T KNOW ANNE MURRAY WAS ON SESAME STREET, I THOUGHT SHE WAS SIMPLY CREATED FOR FAMILY GUY!
It sounds like you did not even realize she was a real person.
15 years later, Anne Murray's nephew starts a band with Notorious cat lover, "bubbles", from Trailer park boys.
hello colin my name is eli blanks i was just watching your lookback on a sesame street christmas but i was hoping if you can make a lookback video on a sesame street christmas carol in which oscar the grouch plays the roll of ebenezer scrooge and is visted by 3 spirts of christmas and will he ever be good and not grouchy you'll just have to watch and see colin. love eli blanks
0:45 Those look more like Costumes then the real Muppets (at least to me).
Why is Imogene coca in this and why is Sid Caesar not there with her?
7:42 that poor cat looks so terrified :(
7:09-7:18 First The Wiz, and then this? Man, Michael Jackson made some interesting career decisions at such a young age.
Imogene coca, with an a. She was a huge TV star.
I remember a fairly recent Sesame Street Christmas special about Sesame Street being bad
Can you get rid of the auto-generated chapters please?
12:09 yeah me spinney say hello to
Michael Jackson
In heaven 💐🌻🌺🌹
At least your fairer compared to Morgan Leger of Vaulting, he really does not like that special.
