Is bigger always better?
mhmmm you may have a situation where that extra 4 inches may be useful :O
It really depends on usage and I will stick with pickleball and old wooden racket from 1981. 😂. Have a good week to all.
I'd say yes mainly because of stability and top speed.
I guess if you could get a huge chainring it's okay. But ideally as long as it can hit 50kph at 120rpm before you spin out downhills it's good enough, that way there'll be nice gear ratios for just cruising around at 80-90 rpm.
Both. Both are good.
Want a light and compact bicycle? Go for 16.
Want an acceptable speed? Go for 20.
Oh yeah
A few comments:
1. There are actually two "16-inch" wheel sizes, ETRTO 305 and ETRTO 349. Yours seems to be the latter size whose tires usually max out in size at 37mm wide. This means that they are relatively narrow, low volume and required higher air pressure, making them kinda harsh on non-smooth surfaces. The other type, ETRTO 305, come in larger sizes, up to 57mm wide, requiring lower pressure. This is the size you want for more comfort.
2. The smaller the wheel, the stronger it is, holding all factors constant.
3. The smaller the wheel, the faster they are too accelerate, leading to a more spirited and agile ride.
I have a 24 inch folding bike from tern. The node. I needed something that I could toss in the trunk of a car or hatchback. It is just a little bigger than the 20 inch when all folded up. There is something fun about a folding bike. Makes you feel like a kid
They are a lot of fun. Even better if you have a car to put them in 😊
I am very new to Folding bikes and very glad to get to see this channel. Very clear demonstration. Nice couple. Really took the couple shirts seriously.
I’ve been in Cambodia for five years and finally decided to have my Dahon sent here. Should be about three weeks and I can’t wait!!
Awesome!
So relax of seeing both riding around with folding bikes.
I have a 20" Dahon and wouldn't switch to smaller wheels for the way I use the bike - touring and exploring.
I consider the 20 inch the limousine among the folding bikes. They are not that compact to transport but do not shake you while driving and still accelerate very quickly. With enough gears you can reach high speeds with less effort than a regular bicycle.
As your new secret riding spot maybe think about holding a clean-up of the area. It’s not a long path and looks like a lot of people enjoy the quiet path. There are a lot of illegal dumping spots and lots of trash down that path. And being that so many people enjoy that spot they might appreciate someone holding a clean-up event and join in on the clean-up. Good luck!
Nice idea!
On bigger bikes, 650b v 700c is already noticeable, so 16" v 20" is understandable :)
If I could find a long seat post with elastomer suspension, I'd go with smaller wheel for practicality, otherwise, the bigger wheels isn't a bad choice either!
I have no idea how you do your audio (and I'm not an expert that needs to know), but jesus was it spot on. I mostly just listen to these videos and only watch sporatically, and it felt like you recorded it in a studio, but everytime I'd glance over--you guys are outside in the wind, lol. Well done!
We try to prioritize audio as much as visual quality. But it's as simple as using an external mic and syncing the audio in the edit 😁
You both look so good in those colourful shirts !
I totally agree with Thuong, the bigger the wheels in a folding bike, the smoother and faster the ride. Also, if you have any sensitivity in your upper trapezius area, riding in a bent scrunched up position for any length of time can be seriously sore, as for women’s saddles, it is vital to get them right ! Overall, it is not really a personal choice, but what suits the way you are built.
Great video and really love the watermelon and pineapple outfits!! I ride a Zizzo Urbana with 20” wheels and I love it! It’s great for road and off road trail adventures. I updated the seat with a Terry Topo MTB saddle in pink as well as added pink wheels for my own personal flair!🎉 I’ve recently added wheel lights with changing pattern designs as well for sunset riding around campgrounds when camping. The Zizzo Urbana has been on some pretty rough off road trails and has always felt extremely strong and durable. I absolutely love this bike!
I love your matching shirts! Im torn between the 2. Ride feel of 20 inch vs convenience of smaller folding 16 inch...
20" all day. More comfortable...
Nice review. Seeing you using your folding bikes in Thailand, as well as reviews from ibike unfolded, helped convince me to buy a folding bike. A Zizzo 20 inch. Now I keep the bike in the trunk of my car - and whenever I’m free after work or on the weekend I just get out and bike at our local park. The convenience of it helps me to get out more often and moving.
That sounds like an awesome use situation. Glad to hear you're enjoying it 😁
16 inch folding bikes are really nice, I have a brompton and love it, but front stability can be pretty sketchy if you're pedaling at high speeds.
That's a good point. It's more responsive at slow speeds, but less stable at higher speeds.
And frankly risky on 14..
I have both (never enough bikes) and I can't decide. 😂 I probably ride the 20 inch more, but I do like the 16 inch for when I know I will be taking a bus/train/uber part of the way. The 20 inch folds but yeah, I feel it folds more to keep a small package when you store it in your apartment.
Exactly. We actually rarely fold our 20" bike in our apartment 😅 But it's nice to be able to when we need to.
Do you think Manrine D8 will not work well taking a bus daily?
Comfort is too important for me. I will go for the 20-inch wheels. A new Dahon will be here soon.
Nice, enjoy the new Dahon!
The couples shirts are hilarious! Wear it for a weekend trip to Hoi An! 😆
😂
One obvious solution to the big vs small wheel thing is to have some kind of suspension, like the Birdy. i had one many years ago and it worked quite well.
Spot on !
Good point, I still really want to try one of those.
For me, both types are fun to ride. I even have a 16inch two-fold which is the lightest among these models.
As an owner of an original, 2019 SuperlightM6LXBrompton (The origin of the Mobot Royale, Copy!), I also owned a Makita electric folder, as the Dahon bike, which only folded once (But the rideable distance on two small tool batteries was low). It is like comparing apples with potatoes! The triple folding bike has its one purpose and its one good side in the compact fold, as it other vise is a heavy ride for longer distances! And the Brompton has a suspension in the rubber between the Triangle and the frame, which works for both wheels with the rider as Center of Gravity!! The 20" bike has none! And the 20", yes it kind of "folds", as its most prominent feature! 😄 Finn. Denmark
I wanted to see you riding to get a comparison of the different sized wheels!
Wow, that grocery box placement at the end of the video is quite impressive!
I noticed I didn't watch any cycling videos at all during the winter time. I wonder if others are like that too. Now that it's getting nicer again, I'm excited to get back on the roads!
Interesting observation. Enjoy the nicer weather.
Great vid, now I'm bummed, probably just get both 😅
That view is insane 😮
Really need thicker wheels around 1.5 thick for 16 inchers and a springy rear shock for the trifold, compound that to the frame which is chromoly steel, and steel absorbs shock, and most likely you're gonna have a comfortable ride.
Love those outfits, guys. I want to wear those in my rides.
Hey, Cruise. Thanks for this comparison. I was wondering how the Mobot Royale compares to a similarly priced (or at least as close as possible in price) Brompton?
20" wheels are plenty enough small for me and I fear that 16" wheels would be too small for me if I were riding on an unfamiliar road at speed or at dusk because a pothole could ruin your day, to say the least. BUT, I really do appreciate the superior space savings of a 16" tri-folding bike. If I were using one of these as a daily commuter, I'd go with a 16" model, otherwise I'd go with a 20" model.
Awesome video and channel! Thanks for making and sharing this and your other videos. Very useful and inspiring.
May I ask what that yellow thing is on the front of the 16" Bike ?
Thanks! It's a mount for bags
@@TwoWheelCruise Awesome! Thanks for the info 😊👍
I've already got a 20" folder so now I'd like a 16" 😀
Never enough 😂
@@TwoWheelCruise I'm always thinking and looking at new bikes! 🤣
Go with 20" these are the best
20 " wheels are more stable. If you need a folding bike then the 20's will give you a ride that's closer to a regular bike. You will probably need a comfy saddle as you may not have any suspension.
Can you talk about maintenance? What if you are not tech savvy in fixing the flat tires between the dahon vs royale etc.? How easy is to bring to a local bike shop to fix a flat tire and if they have the spares part for them?
We put very puncture resistant tires on our 16" and have never got a flat. We carry spare tubes just in case. The tires can be very difficult to change yourself and most normal bike shops probably won't stock these size tubes unless they sell folding bikes. So we always buy online and make sure we have a stock at home.
Nice review, thank you
The Mobot is just like a Brompton. How did they get away with it?
Patent expired
Would you rather have a 16" Brompton or a 20" custom Brompton? Why? Thank you.
It's interesting how the bike can carry that shopping at the end of the video. You both look ready for summer in them tops stay safe
Summer is here 🥵
@@TwoWheelCruise I think it would be to hot for me their in winter but I'm from a Celtic land of The UK where it tends to rain. When I grew up in Hyde Manchester it felt like it rained nearly everyday now I'm in North Wales we get a lot of wind in Winter and sometimes snow
Are folding bikes good for long distance riding like say 5+ miles?
I'm kinda short at 5f9 so not worried about the bike being small.
I rode my 14" 3 speed bike for 180 kilometers.
You can ride it as long as you can. 😊
I have dahon and brompton and I find dahon to be way more practical, its really fast to fold to go into tube, also better ride comfort with bigger wheels
The Brompton is drastically faster to fold than the Dahon.
@@RayThackeray no, because when you go into the tube you only fold it in half and roll it on its big wheels not the tiny wheels on your rack
@@Moonrakerd Rubbish I used the London Tube thousands of times with my Brompton and I could fold it completely in one stride after dismounting (less than 2 seconds). The Brompton folds smaller than ANY other folding bike in the world, prove me wrong. BTW you can't. I never had to roll it they are so light, I just carried it by the seat.
@@RayThackeray I have both, what are you trying to tell here :D
@@Moonrakerd I had TWO Dahons and TWO Bromptons on a boat. If you re-read what I wrote, it is perfectly clear. There simply is no comparison.
love the couple getup!
Bigger wheels roll better which is a science fact, up against 700c your little wheels struggle to overcome the resistance of any small bumps in the road that larger wheels overcome with ease. So if you really must have a folding bike 🤔 ?????? Get one with the largest wheels possible.
Depends what you're using them for. Stands to reason smaller wheels would accelerate better and I find the folders handle much better in the city.
@@GIedits-vf7reis it safety downhill
I havin a dahon speed uno and I love it but I have recently become more interested in the Brompton style bikes for portability. It is hard for me to justify paying over a grand for it though. I have seen some options from Asia that are alot more reasonable for about $600. I may pull the trigger for one of those if I can get it stateside
where did you buy these bikes from? no link? Also, I don't like that on the 20" bike's SEAT pole at the bottom can get scuffed up during the carry or drag process. It should have a protector or something. It may get scuffed up on cement if handled rough.
as for the small bike I like that it's compact but I don't want to feel every rare pot hole or what not during my rides especially with groceries lol
Size doesn't matter. It's the performance that matters
20 inch bifold can do everything you need in a folding bike for a fraction of the price of a trifold. They aren't as small but still work in multimodal transport and are better to ride
100%! 20" are amazing. I bought YOSEMITE FOLDING 20" 2016 MODEL. SO MUCH BETTER THAN OTHER BIKES, comfortable and classic look
cool bikes and scenery!
Hi. Thanks for the great review. Folks don't seem to be wearing helmets??
Is the "Royale" bike the "Brompton"? Thank you very much for your answer.
It is a different company, but similar style bike
@@TwoWheelCruise Not just similar - it is a direct rip-off of the Brompton.
Thuong looking very stylish. I had a Dahon Mariner D7 but even with an extra long seatpost it was not the best fit for my 6 feet 3 inch body.
Thanks! I'm 6' and it fits me well, so you must have very long legs
What is the GPS average cruising speed on both bikes?
Hi what's the wheelbase of these bicycle
Appears the Mobot like the Brompton needs a longer seat post for most adult European male types. Been wanting a 16” folder, but keep thinking that after the initial high of getting one, how often will l opt to ride it over my more comfortable and efficient 20” Tern.
Yes, many folding bikes need a longer seat post if you are taller. Dahon's bikes usually have longer seatposts though, which is great.
Im 6 feet and don't much like the brompton for longer rides due to the lack of leg extension (fine for a get around town bike and great for bringing anywhere but there's. Tradeofd)
I can't understand why there isn't more competition for Brompton, in Europe there is almost not 16" wheels foldable, just the new btwin fold light 1"
If you want a folding bike then I would assume you'd want maximum portability so get the 16inch version.
I have the same rear rack on my Zizzo Liberté. I like the rack despite its upturned rear, which is terribly impractical.
Love the outfits. You should also get matching shorts. Great trail without the traffic. Right up my ally. Forgive me for saying, but they should name that trail, “Trash Trail.” Reminds me of the Philippines, garbage everywhere. No pride of environment. Such a shame. 16” vs 20”? Well, I have a 20” Dahon, so I can’t make a comparison. I don’t mind it, but I would prefer a standard 26” bike, if I had one. 😊
We have matching shorts, but they do not have pockets so I didn't wear them in this video. And yes, it's very unfortunate that people in Vietnam throw garbage everywhere 😑
What's the difference between the Royale and Brompton?
They are very similar, but Royale is much cheaper and they have more colors.
@@TwoWheelCruise fyi, Royale is a premium cheaper alternative to brompton; in my country there are several other cheaper alternatives trifold bikes to Royale.
I'm thinking of going smaller without looking like a clown, while fixing the small wheel problem & I think the 16" tri-fold frame is a perfect platform :).
It's hard to get a folded 20" bike in places e.g. public transportation, even though it's the same size as a folded wheelchair.
Last tidbit, the dahon rack straps don't last unfortunately :/.
Do you think Marine D8 is bad to take a bus daily?
If you want the bus driver to call their boss everytime, than yes @@Ancorarte
After getting off, the hospital wouldn't let me in, so another confrontation, luckily i was able to meet the security guard half way on the issue.
20 are more comfortable
him: "this you this path for biking, running, also car training". Me: "and also garbage dumping".
Is the tower over the span of the bridge supposed to be on an incline?
Yes, there is another similar tower near the opposite end of the bridge leaning away from the one on this end.
Yes, there are mirror towers on this bridge. It is one of the flatter bridges in Da Nang and they are all unique design styles
20 inch tyres and inner tubes are easier to come by. As well as panniers for bikes with 20 inch wheels. I find 16 inch wheel bikes don't handle turning well but i guess they would be better if you have a dynamo fitted and also might have faster acceleration from a standing start.
Those are good points. I think the 16" handles turning better at slower speeds, but the turning is smoother on the 20"
What would be your favorite places to live, out of all the places you traveled too , i.e 1. being best?
Taipei Taiwan is number 1
I think for me the 16 will be the best. I need compact commuter for Bangkok center
watermelon pineapple shirts FTW :)
I had seriously considered a folding bike but was shocked at the price. My intent was to put it in my car trunk and bike everywhere. I was disappointed at the low spec and high price. I looked at buying a chinese model and customize to a road worthy bike. In the end I went with a road bike because I wanted to join a club.
You can get a decent 20" 2 fold bike for about $400-$700
Buy Yosemite folding 20" 2016 . Amazing bike ! So comfortable and I am like 188cm
All bikes have their own purpose. It depends what you want from it.
3.55 guy peeing behind you LOL. I ride a 20 inch folding bike with 2.5 inch tires which helps a little over bumps etc
Men are always peeing on the sides of the roads here 😅
On your Damon, extend the seat post & roll it.
I'm using 18 😊
i want to push for the e board
how tall are you?
How to buy from Bangladesh
Gear ratios?
The Royale is 3x3 with internal hub. The Dahon is a 7 speed derailleur. Not sure on exact ratios.
Where are the bike helmets?
Looks like the Mobot is a clone of a Brompton.
Would be nice if you acknowledge that the 16" wheeled bike is a Brompton clone.
My pick is 20 inch
Nice😊
ok, so we have a brompton clone and a raleigh evo!
20 inches is the best for me
😊i must admit, i wish i had a brompton type to board the train with, but my 20 inch is nimble enough, plus it cost me only $100 used whereas i have to pay 4 months rent for the Brompton...if i could find one nearby. Nice video.
That's a good point as well! 20" bikes are usually considerably cheaper.
Does this royal have seat slippage issues like Bromptons do?
Haven't had any issues with that

I never understand how people ride bikes with flip flops.
Strange, I only ever ride bikes in flip flops for the last 5 years living in the tropics. I also cycle tour in the rain, and never have to worry about wet cycling shoes.

20" are better, more comfortable
Just discovered your channel. Very interesting. Not impressed by the amount of litter around where you have been filming.

The Mobot Royale is a rip-off of a Brompton.
They don't deserve to sell any.
It's a 40+ year old design. Patents expire for the reason of brining more cheaper alternatives to the market and this gets more people into cycling.
