Hi, my name is Pam. Also, you have given me so much more information than any other site. I appreciate both of you keep up the works because I’m learning a lot …..because of you I’ve narrowed down what I absolutely need ,rather than buy things that I don’t need and waste money.
Ive been growing microgreens for about a year now. My best results came from using coco coir. I spread the seeds over the wet "spoil" and cover. They usually sprout in 3 days or so. I spray with water every day until they get to the size I want. My favorites are sunflower seeds!
As a visual learner, your videos are SO helpful. Will you show how you apply the fertilizer? PS…I would love to know how to grow microwaves! Thank you for the chuckle. 😘💕
Hi, when I first saw you on RUclips a few weeks ago, I first thought. Oh great an older person probably boring…in all fairness, I am older myself. Age 64. But as I watched you after just a few days I realize you are amazing. A great teacher for so many things, a scientist and a homemaker mom of 6. I have subscribed and have a great admiration for you!
Thank you, Pam and Jim….interested in doing microgreens!😊 Planted tomato and pepper seeds about 7 days ago. Soaked seeds overnight, then put in red solo cups with a hole in bottom, then set it inside another solo cup to help retain moisture for roots. Put in tote on top of seedling mat and then put under lid with hole cutout for light. Tomatoes were up in 3 days, with peppers a couple days later. Looks like all seeds came up. Really enjoy seeing things grow!🪴🪴🪴
Your idea for using the trays with a wicking system is genius. I just happen to have several of those and am going to give it a try. If you have a Sam’s club nearby, they have a package of 30 of the same style you’re using for under $10.
I love growing carrots!! We eat the greens too, fabulous pesto. And great dried for mixed greens. But, 2 years ago I discovered pelleted seeds. Plop a seed, plop a seed...they are growing everywhere I see a space!! No thinning required. Johnny's.
I do the wicking method too but I use shoe laces. Have to check to make sure they will wick. I have put them on one of those honeycomb plastic light covers over an pan like a cookie sheet or cake pan and put the shoelaces through the planting container and fill that with soil and then drop the lace through one of the holes in the honey comb so it touches the bottom of the pan. I keep the pan filled with water and nutrients and the plants wick up the water as they need it. I am not very good with words so I hope what I have described makes sense.
Once upon a time, paper towels didn't have 'other' chemicals within them. Alas, they do nowadays 😪. Chief Tuckabuckaway was telling you about this and suggested a small strip of cheesecloth in place of the chemical ladened paper towel. He wasn't rude and didn't interrupt you whilst you were speaking, so I told him I would relay the message. I asked him how much cheesecloth costs, and he stated not that much. It's good to know cheesecloth is Chief Tuckabuckaway approved. 😊🤣😅.
I wonder if you put something on the indoor side of the plants, to reflect the light coming in so that the light comes in on the plants and also bounces back on to them, would help increase their growing? In my house in the wintertime the sun is on a lower path so I get a lot more light in my south facing window in the winter.
Genius! I have purchased seeds for growing carrots, Black Seeded Simpson lettuce, and spinach indoors. I need to get my shelving and containers purchased. Excited for your results. I have a corner with a north window and west windows. I have house plants there at the moment and they do well there so im.hoping the veggies will too. If I need grow lights I will get some.
Interesting...I learned about cut and come again method for spinach, kale, and lettuce and was taught to harvest the outer leaves - the older ones - first. Then leave the inner ones to mature and cut the next oldest ones next. I may have to do an experiment trying it both ways and see what works better for me. I know you can cut it all above the growth point/crown at once and it will regrow a few weeks later. I prefer to just cut a few leaves at a time so I don't have 'down' time while it regrows.
Oh my thank you for this Daughter loves these, we have been wanting to grow, but as you said a lot of waste of soil etc, this is perfect way for her to get them . Can you just plant regular peas? Or broccoli seeds?
I’m inspired! I’ve never grown n or used micro greens 🤷🏻♀️ I can’t grow anything indoors due to lack of light, space, and cats. But I do have one window with a windowsill, and these containers would fit. Need to find ideas on how to use micro greens
Can't seem to find (on your Amazon store) that bunch of 25 black containers with lids for growing indoor microgreens. Please help, is it under a completely different name?
This looks great! Do you have any idea of what is possible with north-facing windows? I use a lot of "systems" indoors that have built-in lights. But I want to reduce my dependence on electricity. I'm looking at some hanging shelves that can be in the window, but am unsure if I can manage to grow lettuce in a north-facing window. I wouldn't attempt fruiting plants, but lettuce would be nice. - Edited to add that this is regarding a condo, so the north-facing windows are the only option.
In our house, there are some North facing windows with direct morning sunlight but not not enough to be effective. The rest of the time the North side of the house is in the shadows. Jim
I cannot grow anything indoors. My cat knocks everything off window sills, counters snd digesting plants tgat are in pots on the floor. I had indoor hanging baskets but she jumped up and broke the part where the hangers head them. Then I trued the macrame holders abd she knocked the pots out of those. So no indoor plants fir jd until she passes away of old age. She is 19 years old snd dhow no signs of aging yet.
Your cat sounds like a silly frisky little girl. Challenging you with the territory of your place. Clear bin/w lid or an upside-down clear bowl so she cannot disturb or eat up your goodies shall defeat your silly frisky little girl. 19 years is a fabulous amount of time, and this might bring the right amount of challenge to her. 😊
@EF H I think air circulation is critical to avoid damping off... perhaps some 1 inch holes drilled in the sides and a fan would work. My cat really loves to lay on soil...she's an indoor only kitty. I struggle with seed starting inside because she 'must' lay on them! Might be heat mat under them related...but she does it some when it is off...so... might work.
Your are welcome. Yes, we have placed worms in soil one or two times. We found them this year, we in places we did not put them. It was an interesting surprise. Jim
Where do you source your microgreen seeds? Obviously the amaranth comes from your own property! 😃 But I have seen sizes and prices all over the place and don't know where to get them or how to gauge how much I would use, etc., so I don't know how expensive it might be to do this... or if there's a better place to get them. I'm gonna start some lettuce right away, though. Thank you for the tips!

I'm probably a few days behind but I just noticed the back splash and I love it.

Pam does not fertilize the microgreens. They are only in the ground for two weeks. Jim

Another very great educational and clever video! Thank you Pam and Jim
Thank you! Jim
Indoor growing this upcoming winter is my next big goal.
Pam you have me so inspired! I have several Costco rotisserie chicken containers, paper towels, and seed. Got my project for toady!
I have been growing microgreens just on the paper towel in the takeout containers. No mess and works great

Awwwww.... LOVED the video! YUMMY greens. Always lovely to see you two. Love and blessings....
Thank you for helping us. Praying for all

Thanks for sharing! This is something I've really been wanting to try. I also want to try growing micro dwarf tomatoes year-round.
Happy Mother’s Day. Enjoy your micro green. Love mime!
Thank you!!! I've been wanting to learn how to grow micrograms.
Tfs ❤
EUREKA! JUST WHAT I HAVE WANTED TO LEARN HOW TO DO. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!
Great! Jim
Microgreens are so useful!
Also for outside, I always direct seed lettuce and thin but leave plants only 2-3 inches apart and it makes lots of lettuce all season.
Carrot greens are edible so as you thin out carrots you could eat the tops and compost the roots.

Maybe a reflective sheet would help your bay window plants grow a little fuller. Hobby Lobby sells shiny silver tablecloths in the party section.
I ve been sprouting n growing microgreens for years n love it.
Okay so now I am also growing micro greens ! Looked so good, started them today. Thanks!
Wonderful! Jim
Love your videos! I always pick the outer leaves of lettuce, letting the middle continue to produce.
Thank you for your comment. Jim

Yes, cheesecloth is a viable alternative. Jim
You and Jim are amazing. Jim is the genius behind the camera !!
Hello have a good day.
wow. this was awesome for a beginner microgreen grower like me. i really appreciate the clarity and also the simple products used. TY Pam!
Glad it was helpful! Jim
Love micro greens
I use a utility knife to make my slits. Not as fast but works!

That sounds like a great idea
I use leftover Reflectix insulation that reflects light back onto my plants.

You’re the best! Love seeing what you’re doing. I’m also experimenting with sprouts and greens inside. It’s too hot in AZ for lettuce right now.
Lettuce will grow inside.....
Sounds great! Jim
Thank you! This video is so valuable’
So happy to see your gardening videos! 😀
So nice of you, Jim
Speckled should do ok...it is just slower in my garden.
Yes, we hope it will do well. Jim

You could do a Google search: List of Edible Microgreen Seeds and peas and broccoli are listed among a lot of other seeds. Jim

Do your windows allow the full spectrum of light that plants need? If not you may have to resort to grow lights.

I know exactly what you mean! Some people have cats and plants - no problem. Not us! Our cats have always been anti plants

Let me know when your microwaves harvest. I'd like to buy one 😂 lol.
Did you mean microgreens harvest and not "microwaves." Maybe, I am being too, concrete: you would like to buy one what? Jim

Johnny's Seeds or Mountain Valley Seeds are the two vendors Pam uses. Jim Correction: Mountain Valley Seeds is not True Leaf Market.
@@RoseRedHomestead Thanks!!
You don't need soil to grow microgreens, just water. Check out sprout people or whole food plant based cooking on you tube.
Thanks for the information, Jim
