I’m going to check this out later for Korean. It doesn’t look too complicated in your video. A while back migaku was free but too hard to use in my opinion. It looks a lot more polished now.
I'm good at making things hard I think. I'm using this to watch Netflix. I spent a lot of time last night using your video to setup Migaku. Your video is really helpful but I still struggled. I am using this for Korean and I'm having a couple issues. One issue is that the imported definitions are not spaced well at all. They have a lot of multiple lines and blank lines in them so it doesn't fit on one screen and I have to scroll a lot (on my iPhone anyway) unless I go in and manually clean up the definitions which I'm doing right now. This isn't a deal breaker as I'm used to it anyway. Then the pop up dictionary is super annoying. I mean it's useful of course, except when you're done looking at it. It just sticks around and doesn't go away unless you restart the movie. But I'm doing other things and if I go to make a card then the dictionary pop up will ruin the screen shot. I really hope they fix this. Also not a deal breaker. (EDIT: found out how to make it go away - just press shift when the mouse isn't hovering over a word) The deal breaker is that the toolbar and pretty much the add on itself just crashes. This has happened several times now. The tool bar randomly disappears and you can't look up words etc. I need to restart Chrome. I'm going to keep trying to use it and hope it stops crashing but if it doesn't then I think I'm done. I had a good run last night and it worked for a couple hours without crashing but today it's crashed several times. I'm looking on the forums and it's depressing to see how people are asking questions but nobody is answering anything. (EDIT: Another edit, the problem came back even with no other tabs it windows open. It seems another add on caused the issue. I don’t know what, I just disabled all other add ones to fix it)
I was having trouble mining single words. When I click Q, it mines the entire sentence. How do you mine one word selected so that you dont need to go into the auto generated card to delete the other words? I tried highlighting the word I wanted and pressed Q but it still creates a card for the entire sentence
Is there a way to automatically bold the target word when you create a card and send it to Anki I like to keep the target word in a sentence on the front, but if it’s not bolded, I’m not always sure which word I’m supposed to be trying to remember
Thanks for the tutorial it's quite complete, I need to use the legacy app because the new one doesn't have a way to delay the subs (or I haven't found it) but one thing I miss is seeing faster (with just hovering) the frequency to know what to focus on, I think there's something similar from the settings in the frequency dictionaries config but I don't truely understand the setting it's related to T1 sentences I think?
Hello! The "shift" button in Migaku player does not work for me. I can't view dictionaries and it's very inconvenient! But if you watch the video on RUclips, then everything is fine, please help)
What is the macOS equivalent hot key for looking to see if you have an anki card in your deck during sentence mining? I haven't found that out yet so I have to go through the pain of searching a deck manually to see if I made a card.
How did you get the unknown words bolded or underlined? like you have the original sentance above on the anki cards and then below is are the unkonwn words.
If I wanted a sentence in Anki to have a screenshot for context, how would I do that? For example, when trying to answer an Anki card I am shown the screenshot and sentence before hearing the audio and answer
Alright could you help me with migaku as I'm really struggling with it I thought it would be simple to set up but it's far from simple I can't get the dictionary add on with anki it's not recognising the add on code I'm on the newest anki I think it's the q5 one 2.1.60 it just seems so hard to sort out I watched your videos and thought I'd try it out as I am also learning Japanese I've been trying for hours to sort it the whole set up and I'm struggling
It needs some kind of subtitles to parse from, either hand-made by the video owner, or auto-generated by RUclips. Migaku doesn't generate subtitles for videos itself.
The cards from Migaku get added to note types in Anki, not to the decks. So I cannot study them like usual decks. It is really confusing..What should I do?
Do you have a deck and a note type properly selected in the Migaku Dictionary? It shouldn't be able to turn cards into note types just due to the way Anki works. If there are further issues, you can contact Migaku or join their Discord or something for help since they/others can probably help you more.
I personally just use English dictionaries most of the time as I find it much quicker and I haven't experienced benefits from using J-J dictionaries unless I feel like I want to see an additional definition. I left a more detailed comment on some other video, but maybe I'll just make a video one day explaining the reasons why in detail.
It can be demanding with very long videos or websites with tons of text. Though I was able to sentence mine on an i7-6700HQ/16GB ram laptop no problem.
Hi Livakivi! Sorry to botter, but I seem to have a problem with your custom note type. For some reason, it does not have the same layout as its shown in the video. Every thing is centered to the left and the font size is very small, and i dont know how to adjust it 😔 Could you help me?
It's kinda hard to tell, but sounds like the CSS might be missing? You don't need to use the note type I provided, but, if you hit "Tools" > "Manage Note Types" > Livakivi Example Note Type > Cards > Styling, does it have the fields cards / font face / japanese text? If not, may be a good idea to delete it and re-download the note type.
I have the same problem. It worked for the first couple of times, and now everything is left-aligned. Unfortunately, I dont have a programming background and will most likely have to end up using the default migaku note type.
Does the extension stop automatically for you when you reach a sentence that is 1T (i+1)? Or do I always have to look out for them myself? Maybe there is a setting?
I have a question, you mark words as seen by pressing 2 each time you mine a word. Doesn't it add all mined words to the words database automatically? Do you have to re-sync to anki regularly?
In my case, pressing 'q' is not working - the card is not being created. It succeeded very occasionally after pressing it hundreds of times. Do you happen to know why is that? I would be grateful for help. Edit: Actually, any hot key is not working now :(
That is weird, I haven't had anything like that, occasionally the keyboard layout you have active in your OS can affect it like I said in the video, but it shouldn't be a problem for keys like Q. I recommend joining the Migaku Discord or something and asking there, they are usually fast to respond, and I can't really help much myself since I'm not part of the Migaku team.
I am a heavy Anki user who has been religiously using Anki for the past 3 years. I absolutely love the idea of migaku as I am currently learning German however the add-on is so unbelievably difficult and buggy. The founders are absolute donuts for making this so complicated and the automated card generation still doesn't work.
Not really sure what you mean. The subtitles are based on whichever subtitle track you choose on RUclips, meaning that you can select either manually created subtitles (if available) or auto generated ones.
@BudgetLivakivi which is only good if it is uploaded captions. Auto captions are always incorrect in Japanese. Most Japanese RUclipsrs often add subtitles to their videos, Migaku would be better using these by doing an image scan, the technology already exists as that is how Google translate work when you use the camera. But instead of using a camera they can use a Screenshots instead. This would result in a much better accuracy when learning via videos.
@@narsplace I've mined ~10,000 n+1 word cards from auto-generated RUclips subtitles - yes they have mistakes, but they are "correct enough" for sentence mining most of the time, especially now as the accuracy keeps improving every year. If you're already intermediate at Japanese, you're going to be able to tell when the subtitles are wrong, meaning that its not really a problem since you can still extract the new word. As long as you have the correct target word, the native audio, and a screenshot to remind you of the context, the sentence accuracy won't matter as you can review cards just by looking at the target word and you'll know the rest of the sentence from audio. The issue with Mining in-video subtitles via OCR is that not only are they not always available, but most of the time, those in-video subtitles are "summaries" of what is being said, not a word-for-word transcript (a good example of this is the channel @yurugengo). This is why I recommend beginners to mine content that has manually created subtitles such as anime, TV shows, or movies, before mining RUclips that requires a baseline for recognizing mistakes in the subtitles.
@BudgetLivakivi if you are learning N1 vocabulary via flash cards, in my honest opinion I do believe that is a waste of time. I do see benefits with flash cards but that benefit has a diminishing return the more proficient one becomes in a language. As simply using the language in itself provides more benefits to improving language acquisition than flash cards can. Which is why I believe having correct captions is more important at the higher level because those at higher levels aren't watching content to learn but content that is for natives and if the captions are wrong than specified vocabulary that is missing in that context could make going from upper intermediate to advanced more complex, miguku is good for contextual learning, which is why I like it's tracking feature, as I can learn the words just from reading subtitles.
