I remember when Eric O. almost got burned on a crank sensor that didn't get pulled all the way to ground. Ivan had to remind him. I really love your channel. Watching you and Thomas EXOVCDS, I should be able to diagnose vw and audi confidently.
Awesome video man! This is a great lesson on paying attention to full signal amplitude and not just the presence of a signal. It's very easy to miss something like this, but no match for PLD!
thanks for watching, I could have unplugged it, but I promise you it will run. technically this video shows it running without a ckp signal, because the signal the sensor was producing was implausible to the computer so the computer didn't know how to interpret it, maybe next time
Hey Tommy, I don't know if you're still watching comments on this video but I just had a similar issue yesterday with a 2012 Jetta 2.5L. Vehicle would randomly stall at idle with no codes. Very intermittent. After two days of working on it to duplicate, I finally found the cam sensor was intermittently not pulling all the way to ground. Most of the time it was perfect. However, I found that it would sometimes only drop to 0.77v. If it stayed steady there and used that for it's low point it worked fine but every now and then it would drop to 0.77v then do a quick spike up to around 2v and right back back down to 0.2v. When that happened, I think the computer assumed the engine had rapidly changed RPM, the cam timing solenoid would stop cycling, and the engine would quit, likely due to the cam timing changing suddenly. I found I could wiggle the sensor around and sometimes get it to change it's low point but even that wasn't easily duplicated. Put a new cam sensor in and was no longer able to get the low point to jump up. I've seen a lot of these 2.5L complaints on the Internet about random stalling with no codes. Just thought I'd share.
Nice! I had a 2.5 intermittent stalling years ago. It would not set any faults. I just started wiggling sensors and the harness. As soon as I touched the cam sensor it stalled. Replaced it. Haven’t seen it since then.
@@PositiveLeadDiagnostics Thanks for the reply. Wish I'd have been so lucky. I could never make it stall by touching/moving the sensor but I was able to finally see it on the scope and just assumed it had to be the cause. Thanks again!
@@PositiveLeadDiagnostics I have same issue.. sensor sending out 2.5volts instead of full.. but, its a Passat 2005 B6, crank sensor basically inside gearbox... Sensor is new, pickup, seal, etc all replaced and new. We think it may be the harness shorted and sending implausible crank sensor signal to ECU. Ever come across this before?
thanks video gotta do one of these. course u didn't show replacing it lol. FYI it wasn't strange as you yourself pointed out why it isn't being pulled to 0. u showed the connector is cracked, so almost certainly inside the connector (not the area looking in but where the wires come INTO the connector) is probably all corroded causing a slight resistance. if there is resistance you cant get to 0...
that 2.5 volts should not be there with the ckp sensor plugged in I honestly didn't notice that, your right, technically that was 2.5volts out of the 5v bias line that should get pulled to ground when the sensor is plugged in
Sorry... that was a "blond moment" on my part. Since it was plugged in, the signal was gonna be either high or low (depending on where the sensor tone wheel stopped). The bias voltage (signal integrity check by ECM) on the signal line would not be visible unless the sensor is unplugged.
Thomas EXOVCDS phew “ finally caught up to you, this is the new RUclips PC police force! Sorta like a hallway monitor. Anyway you need to retract that comment back, you are offending blondes 👱♀️ in the comments section. Thank you for your compliance! Carry on.😌😉
Hi nice fix but why didn't you check the RPM signal from the scan tool ? And second I already ask you this before about where you work and you told me at a VW dealer but what I don't understand is why you are using a snap on tool ? Why not VAS 6150D
thanks for watching, I didn't feel the need to, basically the faults stored and looking at the tach was enough in my opinion, rpm probably would have read 0 rpm during the extended crank, which then the computer uses the cmp sensor and we would have seen an rpm
Hi, i have problems with my passat CC 2013, the car runs good when it's cold but stalls once it warms up... and there is no chance to start ir normally again, after start it works only 1-2 sec, then stalls... After 2-3 hrs when the engine is cold, it stars normally again... The diagnosis didnt show any faults... There is possibility that i have the same problem with crank?
Hey I have a question , I have a 2007 2.5 vw Jetta Wolfsburg . I’ve replaced fuel pump, crank shaft sensor, maf sensor , and when it starts it will run momentarily and die, could it the cam sensor? Please help.
Hi. I have a 2011 passat b7 2.0 tdi yesterday while driving it died and did not fire up after that. It would crank but the engine would not fire up. After waiting for about 15 mins it fired up and died after 10 to 15 seconds. And again would crank and not fire up. I'm from India and getting hold of a vcds in a remote town here is next to impossible. Where can I start off with? Pls help. It's really urgent. I'm stuck in a remote place in India with no help
Dude i wish your shop was in my city, in eould definetly bring my 2012, 2.5 lt. Vw passat to you. My car stalls/shots off randomly while in idle and turns back on no fail signals/errors fisplay on dash. If any one has an idea let me know! Cheers!
I am getting a sort of similar issue but on a 3.2L 2010 Audi Q5. Customer complaint was engine stalled, and then when restarted lots of smoke and noise. It was towed in after we had done 6 plugs and 1 coil. Plugs are all fuel fouled and I have spark on all of them. No codes, compression was about 240 on all cylinders with the upper plenum off, there were some mice remnants I had found in the valley, and I am about to throw in the towel. Can you please help positive lead? It would be much appreciated.
@@PositiveLeadDiagnostics Yes, I don't hear any inconsistencies in engine tone, but i dont have an adapter like yours so open the conduit and pierce probe and then liquid electrical tape or how would you go about it?
@@PositiveLeadDiagnostics We had also done an oil change when they were in for the plugs, but maybe someone put the wrong oil in it? I wouldn't doubt if one of our techs was the cause of the problem but I am having a hard time believing it for some reason.
Ok I almost have the same problem, with my car, there’s time that it won’t start and I would have to remove the key then put it back on n turn start n it will cut on. That’s one problem Now when I’m running it don’t shift after 3,4th gear mine u, this is a dual transmission n need mayor Help
My 2012 vw cc 2.0t starts rough every few cranks. Runs fine after it cranks. But sometimes stalls when cranking and makes a terrible sound of the engine just choking up and stopping. Anyone else have this issue?

Very unusual crank signal and wonder why it was only about 50% in amplitude.Great fix and job well done !!
great video, good reminder to check full amplitude of signal which i over looked when i first saw it cheers sandy
Agree with some of the guys here. Could be easily overlooked. Maybe you should've showed us how it runs without the CKP. Nice video Tom.

Any idea of the reliability of the 2013 Passat 2.5 with automatic? Is a well-maintained 100,000 mile example too iffy to buy?
Nice diagnosis. Thanks for sharing that sweet signal capture!
thanks!
A great job as all ways ! Best of luck my friend!
thank you sir!
Looked like there was a bias voltage of about 2.5v when you had the ignition on. I'm gonna have to keep my eye out for that (to check for it).

haha, that was a good observation though, it shouldn't be there! you are correct unplugged should be a 5v bias from the ecm

My 2013 vw passat is having the same problems...how much should it cost for parts and labor? Thanks for upload!
Not sure exactly on price. But it will include a diagnostic fee and probably
Half hour of labor for install. Somewhere around there
Great vid bud, keep up the good work.

The inline jumper harness - home made or purchased?
How bad is it if not fixed will it not start at all or do any damage to the engine thanks

What’s the actual concern. Is it a no start? Or misfire?
