Thanks for the video. For all those following I can confirm the device (KP115 AU) was auto detected in home assistant (as at Jun 2022). Firmware: 1.0.17 Build 210506 .Rel.075231

Yeah the Auto-Discovery is really nice and the setup is so easy I thought I'd done something wrong.

      @@HiveMindAutomation Easy peasy.

I got their 3 way power block and love it. As you said, so easy to set up in HA, didn't like having to register with tp-link and allow location however, to do the initial setup on my phone. I'll be using more of their devices in the future.
    Thanks for the video 👍

I really like these units and I’ll totally take a look at their other gear at some point soon. With the local API I think it would be fairly simple to isolate these from the internet so only Home Assistant can see them. Might experiment with that.

I have tried an Athom and a Brilliant plug, but for Home Assistant the TP-Link KP115 was the easiest. I like it. Firmware was upgraded from 1.0.7 to 1.0.17 OK with no problems too.

Yeah, There was an issue with firmware somewhere around 1.0.12 I think. These are - in my opinion - the best smart plugs available. They might cost a couple extra $$ but they're absolutely worth it. The energy monitoring passes through flawlessly and these (and the TP-Link HS110) are the only ones so I have in my arsenal that can pass data to the Energy Monitoring dashboard.

I have a KP105 and a KP115 incoming. I really need that power monitoring as I have it plugged into a charger for certain stuff. The KP105 is going to be downgraded to outside christmas lights :p

We are starting to get to that time of year where we have to think about the Christmas lights.....

So long as TP-Link dont change their mind and release a new firmware blocking local API again.... i totally agree these are a great option
Personally im going to stick with the flashed Brilliant plugs for now ;)
Great video, keep up the good work mate.

I think TP-link learned their lesson last time.
I want to like the brilliant unit, and maybe I will if I manage to get Tasmota on it, I’m just always so disappointed whenever I spend money on any Tuya devices.

I've firewalled off my IoT network, I leave a small range for internet access for new devices I add before moving them off to their permanent IP that won't have internet access.

Just and FYI on this one,
Looks like the new firmware for KP115 means they are not discoverable from HA
firmware 1.07 cant be found so i updated to 1.017 and they still cant be found
Edit- I was able to add them manually

      They're still my favourites.
The Home Assistant integration is so outrageously simple, and the Long Term Stats from the Energy Monitoring mean you can set up your individual appliances on your energy dashboard.
It's unfortunate that TP-Link are favouring their Tapo line which is slightly less easy to integrate...
That reminds me, I should get some of the Tapo smart switches in to test out.

Which firmware is installed on your KP115? Bought one today and Home Assistant doesn't discover the plug. Mine updated to 1.0.17 which I'm assuming has removed local API access (so will no longer work with Home Assistant)

    • @HiveMindAutomation
      @HiveMindAutomation  3 года назад

I thought Local API Access was returned by TP-link in the latest Firmware? Mine has 1.0.10 on it, so it's a bit behind.

There's some commentary on this page about the new firmware. You might need to contact TP-link Support: www.home-assistant.io/blog/2020/11/23/tplink-local-access/

@@HiveMindAutomation That was for the HS100 and HS110. I'd say they've finally removed local API access in the latest firmware for the KP115 so if HA is important I guess skip these plugs now (my HA sees every other device I have). It's a real shame.

@@HiveMindAutomation Actually, the issue isn't with the plugs. I just installed Home Assistant in a docker on unRAID and it discovered the device no issues at all. So ignore my previous post I guess! :) Looks like it's safe to update to 1.0.17 after all

I think they’re fantastic! And it’s so much less faff than trying to put tasmota on a Tuya unit.

Who thrust any company that wont let you flash their smart gear!

    • @HiveMindAutomation
      @HiveMindAutomation  3 года назад

You mean like what Tuya have started doing now that a bunch of their gear is moving to a Realtek RTL8710BN instead of the ESP8266?
On top of that, flashing the ESP8266 based Tuya modules is getting harder with the newer firmware that won't work with TuyaConvert being seen on a lot more gear out of the factory.
The days of being able to flash Tuya gear at all are numbered.
I appreciate the enthusiasm for being able to flash the gear, but some people want a plug-and-play solution that they don't have to flash for it to be responsive and fully integrated.
Personally I'd take my money to a manufacturer that has a local API built into their kit over a cheaper unit that I then have to flash to make it work any-day.
At least if it's got a local API that I can control it with, it can be isolated from the internet but I still maintain control if I have trust issues with the manufacturer.
