Very good, clear, and easy to understand video. I did not know, before watching this video, that you were a believer. However, when you said something about there being many ways to spool a reel, I had a feeling you were going to go through the gospel or do a devotion! Very happy that you did! Thank you!
Thank you so much for those very kind words! I really appreciate that! So glad too that you found the video a help Thanks so much for watching and may God bless you richly my friend!
I need not look any further since your video was great. Now I'm ready to see if I can do this the right way. Thank you and this Lady Angler is ready to get new line on all my reelsl.
Great video. I took the line off as you demonstrated, the line looped around my little finger and pulled it extremely tight against the screwdriver. Very lucky to not deglove the end of my finger. So just be carful of this everyone. Thanks.
Thanks. Thanks too for the update. That's a great heads up to all of us that anything can happen when using a power tool of any kind and to be careful! Thanks for watching and may God bless you!
Thank you my friend .I put new line and couldn't figure why it was twisted , what a time fishing , Spooled reels before , I must of been lucky . So me how I didn't realize I did this one backwards. Thanks for the refresher course, Glad I stumbled upon your channel. Couldn't find any other that explained it so well. That was a God send. God bless you my friend and stay well, and keep on keeping on. Bob

@@thefrugalsportsman When I was a kid, this would have been in the 70's, my dad would buy this really cheap monofilament, and he would pierce the center of the spool with a pencil, have me hold it, and he would reel it on. The line would have this sticky, powdery residue. The line was of such poor quality, that it would knot itself constantly. But I noticed you use Berkley line. In my opinion, frugal means getting value for your money. Poor quality is just throwing your money away.
I agree. With all the things I love to do in the outdoors I need to make my money go farther, without throwing it away. I like the Berkley line (and Ande line as well) because it is relatively inexpensive, but has proven itself to me over and over. I think you can sometimes come to a point were you start paying for a name, but the higher quality really isn't there and so it isn't worth the added cost! Take care and God bless!
Great video ! I tried about 10 times to do this and my line kept unraveling 😅 and its funny because in my life I would do the same thing ... Thanks so much for you kind words. I really appreciate it! Glad you found the video a help. Thanks too for watching and sharing and may God bless you richly!
I have been fishing for 25 years of my life but I always find it interesting to see how other fishermen spool up their lines. I have a much simpler approach though I tie the line to the spool then I take a tea towel and spray line conditioner on it. Then I hold tension on the line with the tea towel that has line conditioner on it and I start spooling. Then when the spool is half way spooled I spray extra line conditioner on the line on the spool then I add more line conditioner to the tea towel and reapply tension. Then I start spooling again then when I have the spool full I spray extra line conditioner on the line on the spool again. And doing it this way I have never had to do any other steps and I haven't had any problems. And all I do to maintain the line is I spray the line with line conditioner 30 minutes before going fishing and I spray the line with line conditioner again when I get home from fishing and I put new line on once a month.
I usually use the same knot he uses to spool my line. Then I just throw the spool on the ground and reel it up till it’s full🤷♂️ why go through all the extra
@@brandoncarson7025 Spooling the reel m the spool counterclockwise spools the reel the same as the lines memory and helps prevent it from uncoiling and jumping off the reel. Thanks for watching and God bless!
Yep this is the basically the way I was taught except I use the whole rod when u reel about 20 times then tip your rod down to the spool of line, it will twist immediately if it’s on backwards if it does flip the spool over
Yup, it doesn't take long to let you know if the line is coming off the spool the wrong way! Thanks so much for watching and for sharing your info! Take care and God bless!
Two things against braid you didn't mention: 1) If you hang up on a tree or an underwater obstruction, you have to cut the braid and leave all that braid in the water. (I'm thinking bank fishing here.) 2) It's more visible to the fish.
That may be true about having to cut the line, but it would seem to be the same for monofilament as well. It definitely is more visible to fish, but that is why you put a top shot (add a length of monofilament or fluorocarbon line between the hook and the main line). It depends on the fish as well. I've caught striped bass fishing jigs with braided line tied directly to the lure without a problem. Thanks so much for watching and may God bless you!
@@thefrugalsportsman If you get hung up with mono, when you pull, the line will break at the knot, and you usually don't leave all the line in the water. Getting braid to break is hard. I usually have to go search for a stick to wrap it around, too. I'm thinking about going 100 percent braid for top water and worm-type baits (where I don't cast far and if I get snagged underwater I can usually pull the branch to shore) and 100 percent mono for flukes, rattletraps and chatterbaits (actually I could go either way with chatter baits). Where I fish the water isn't very clear at all. I could see using a mono leader for popper type topwaters.
The easiest way to remember which way the line comes off the spool is that when using a spinning reel if the spool comes up off the spool in a counterclockwise rotation it should go on the reel matching the curvature of the spool with the proper direction of the curve of the line. If you do it backwards it will probably twist or pop off the reel spool when not under tension. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching and sharing and may God bless you richly!
You are right in the sense that the line comes off all spinning reels in the same way. But if you put the line on the reel spool opposite the memory of the line that is on the factory storage spool it will want to fight you and have twist in it coming off the reel. What I was showing in the video was just a way I use to help eliminate that twist so the line wants to lay on the reel spool similar to how it was on the factory spool. I'm not sure that is what you were looking for in an answer, and I hope it helps to explain things a little better. Another way you can spool your reel so that the mono lays right is to drop the factory spool in a bucket of water and reel it on the reel. By doing that is should allow the factory spool to flip around and follow the memory of the line as it wants to go onto the spinning reel. Thanks and God bless!
You do not need the line to come off the spool counter clockwise. The feeder spool should be placed inline and have it spin while spoiling the real. Your spool is not the same diameter as the feeder spool, so the numbers of twists coming off the spool won’t match the number going on the reel anyway.
The only way that I know of to spool the reel inline is to remove the spool and use a spooling machine. I was attempting to show people how they can do it at home without any additional tools and still have it work. You are right though in that using a spooling machine is best. Most of the time I don't have a problem with the mono jumping off the spool because the diameter difference is not that much. getting the twist right is the main thing. I you do find it jumping from the spool all that is needed to do is take the spool off. Secure the mono to the spool and place it in a bowl of very hot, but not boiling water for 15 minutes. That will reset the memory on the mono without hurting it and stop any jumping from the spool. These are just some things I have found that work for me. Thanks so much for watching and commenting and may God bless you richly!
Thanks so much for those especially nice, encouraging and kind words. They mean a lot to me and I so appreciate your affirmation. Thanks too for watching and your support and may God bless you richly!
You got some of your facts wrong? Braid does not break down compared to mono. It will last on your real a lot longer.braid will last a lifetime compared to mono 5 to 6 years max
I totally agree with you. Braid last so much longer than mono in terms of years, in fact I even put a prompt on screen at 2:07 of the video stating that. What I also shared is that braid does not hold up abrasion wise compared to mono. Mono can take a lot more abuse than braid. So maybe it came across that it sounded like mono last longer when I really was talking about wear. Either way you are 100% correct about braid outlasting the mono and I could not agree more! Thanks so much for watching and sharing and may God bless you!
