    Amazing that some of the parts from the original D10 will bolt right onto a modern D11T

      Because in 1986 Cat changed model numbers. The D9L was replaced by the D10N, D8L was replaced by the D9N, D10 was replaced by the D11N. The D8N was a new tractor with no predecessor.

    I was lucky enough to see one of the first D10's being unloaded from a rail car at the Island Creek Coal mine at Tenmile West Virginia. Got to run that one some, but spent more time on the new D9L as I done most of the benching for the drills. Kind of wrong to see the D10T in this video, they have nothing to do with the original D10. The D10 became the D11 when the badly needed extended undercarriage was introduced. Along with the other changes such as the engine. The D9L became the D10N when it was re-engineered with the longer undercarriage. The extended undercarriage tractors were a BIG improvement, but they still won't back up a steep place ( like when pushing to a loader ) nearly as well as the Komatsu and older Cat flat track machines. But you won't hear me complain, after running a flat track dozer with no suspension in a hard rock pile for 10 hours I HATED to have to run another dozer if mine was down! Speaking of that, the amazing difference in how easy these elevated track dozers are to do major service/repairs on really is what makes them special.

    *The 'elevated-sprocket concept' was originally trialed from parts scavenged from a ride-on mower to test the concept fully, then the Cat team knew they were on a winner when their model successfully pulled a small load sans any track-slippage.*
    *Congratulations Caterpillar, and especially the original Cat design team on making this concept-tractor a reality.*

    I worked on an experimental d10 in about 1971 with Peter Kewitt. I've heard that they had to downsize for the production models because they were having problems with the transmission. It would be interesting to find out if that was true.

    I'm looking at one of these now to buy. Its an 88 but turned over today started right up. 3600 hrs. Supposedly. Undercarriage looks new. Cab needs some love and one window. They asking 70 g I think I offer 50 and paint it and off to auction. They are such a beast

    Find it ironic that the D9G was at the end.At the same time Allis Chalmers put out the first 500 plus bulldozer at 524 hp HD-41.THe the 524hp Fiat Allis 41-B arrived.In 1976 Komatsu put out the firs 600 hp plus bulldozer the 620hp D455A

    Wonder where and what kind of life the #1 production d10 has lived? I'd guess it's life is over and it's scrapped or sitting in the weeds somewhere rusting away.
