It can be pretty hard to form a glove with the fingers out like that because Rawlings gloves are notorious for getting a bubble in the palm right under the ring and middle finger. This method should be done slowly and carefully!
Would love to see this series continue! Seems like the top tier fielders may all have unique quirks that go unnoticed haha It would be awesome to see a Matt Chapman edition of this series!
You could probably do a whole series on different third basemen. It seems to me like not only is there a lot of talent at the hot corner these days, but there is a lot of variation in glove brands, styles, and fielding approaches there than at other positions. Or I'm totally wrong. Either way, this was a great vid, one of your best.
It's not even in Pro League I'm in 15u and a team I've played 5 times their 3rd baseman does everything totally different from anyone I've ever seen before
The glove technique translates to every position, and is used among more pro players than you realize. The fielding technique however is only conducive to 3rd and P maybe. Great video, and I’d love to duet this at some point
I think another thing that makes a huge difference is how much glove is actually going to contact the ground to pick up ground balls. This is something that can be overlooked as knowing how much ground your glove covers will minimize mistakes and gaps in which the ball can slip through. Flaring the fingers open seems like it would cover more area to pick the ball up. It’s small but significant if you’re trying to transfer and throw within a second.
It’s interesting hearing you talk about putting your hand all the way in the glove compared to not all the way in. I never put my hand all the way in but I used to see guys always put their whole hand it. I felt it always created a bad pocket and creased the palm because it was pinching the palm instead of creating a nice flat palm IMO
The way I was always taught was, when youre moving your glove through the ball, your keep your energy going forward when transitioning to throwing so that you dont lose momentum.
Nolan also keeps his center of gravity a few inches lower. He is always low center. A lot of fielders stay taller in their pocket while Nolan plays much closer to he ground. Which how he moves to engage a grounder: eyes up, knees and waist low he only gets tall after he loads up his back foot for the throw. His center of gravity and sense of balance are simply superb. He has tremendous situational awareness both within his body zone and his immediate environment. His internal clock knows exactly where the runners will be, given the first few moments after the hit. The fact that he takes hundreds of thousands of reps also helps, obviously. Be he does this even with barehanded plays, off center plays, plays in which he has to work off the backhand. The dude just knows the traditional border zone around the bag... And then expands it as if he's, like, 1.5 other players. Great vid by the way. Enjoyed big time.
That is how my glove broke in naturally over the last 25ish years. I play softball so the bigger pocket is a must. I put two in the pinky and pointer out to make it even bigger. My 13" h web glove is wider than most of the other guys 14 or 15" gloves and closes on it's own.
Interesting. I feel the exact opposite. I've used my same 11.5 Nokona at short for 20 years. I hated having a bigger glove/pocket. I tried it for a couple seasons, but I didn't make the same plays and in fact, the ball had a tendency to pop out after hitting the web because there was so much space. When I switched back, I was back to making those DaDaDa, DaDaDa plays! 😂 With a smaller infield glove, I hardly use the web/pocket except for line drives. My main focus was/is stopping the ball obviously and then getting it out and into my hand as fast as possible. It just feels so much smoother and surer (if that's a word) with the smaller glove.
I played third and I’ve always had two in the pinky and move the other fingers one slot over. I also didn’t put my hand in all the way, you could still see my palm. I used a 11 1/2 and I felt I had better control and awareness of where my glove point was at all times.
Bro, you just addressed every single question I’ve ever had about his glove. I’ve never been able to wrap my mind around it. Especially his index finger on the outside. So much different than his counterpart in the AL, Chapman. As a collector I would never do that to one of my gloves. Haha.
2:30 i personally like a mix of the 2 i like the ball to be secured in the pocket but i also want it loose enough so that i can get the ball out quickly. I play pitcher, second, and shortstop.
Did you wear tight jeans with a phone in each of the front pockets because that's the key to great fielding position without over compensating your fielding posture?
Great break down!! I'm a huge fan of his too and love to hear glove specific insight. Let's hear some home town love for Yoyo's or Andersons techniques and gloves?? Maybe a Kolten Wong video? (Sorry lol)
All good (major league) infielders field grounders or short hops with their glove pushing the ball forward. For instance a first baseman takes a short hop throw with his glove going forward towards the pitching rubber. Second and short push their glove towards home plate. Reason being that if they miss handle the ball or it takes a funny hop and they get the glove on it the ball stays in the infield and the runner usually doesn’t take an extra base.
The ball hitting your glove closes the glove; same in barehand sports like cricket where you soft hand the ball and let the ball close your fingers around the ball. As an infielder you also need to get your throwing hand to the ball so a closed glove works against you, not for you. Transfer of ball to hand is what the better play/ears make look seamless
havent gotten a notif about a video in ages! lovin the video, you guys should analyze a local phenom by the name of the "J Hey Kid" Jeremy "Bones" Stephens. heard he's silky with it
Most infielders flare all their fingers and all outfielders do with few exceptions. I've put my hand in rons of game used pro gloves. They have a special way they break gloves in. Flare the fingers first and then they pound the pocket from what I can tell
Love the breakdown on the glove, now if you could break down how to bend with tight Jeans on with a phone in each of the front pockets that would be great!
what he's doing is similar to what an ice hockey goalie does - keep the ball in front of you at all times to control rebounds. flashy glove saves to the side look cool, but a goalie prefers to keep the puck in front with the body behind it to keep it from getting away from you. This way, your eyes are always on the ball. I played goalie and 3B/C for a long time and this makes total sense - same concept, different sport.
I do something similar with my glove: flare thumb out, curl pinky in, but I curl the other fingers more out. Idk what it is about it, but it just feels better.
I always put my pinky and ring finger in the pinky slot, middle finger in the ring finger and my index finger outside the glove. When it was colder (I grew up in Maine) I'd put a battling glove on under my glove...
I have always used my batting glove, purely for a tight fit and no slippage when sweating. That gives me more control and drops variance on reasons for bad plays.

When I tried this with my glove I figured out that when your finger is over on the pad if it’s over far enough it feels like it wraps around the ball in the pocket
Is it normal for a 3rd baseman with a 12 inch glvove to use a single hinge on their glove? I have a 12 inch for 3rd base and I close it thumb to ring but im considering changing it from thumb to pinky
The glove is getting prepared to ship so they are trying to send it out within a week. So the glove should be sent out in a week not delivered in a week
I tried this, but it didn't work. I gave up 7 home runs in a row. The last one was hit so far, in my next start, my coach played the outfielders on the moon.
What’s up BGK, have you seen the video where Arod interviews Arenado? During that vid I noticed Nolan fields with his right foot forward contradicting fundamentals. Why does he do that?
