No kissing the ground, no lap of honour, no walking around with the kids, firm handshakes from his own team and the opposition.....just a bloke who played football - to the highest level. And United fans of my era always keen to acknowledge the response of the Chelsea fans, first class and a credit to the Chelsea club. If you are under 40 and thinking - 'yea but was he all that?' then perhaps the hoard of press at kick off shows you how big an event this man's retirement was. That kind of thing very rarely happened. A by gone era just at the beginning of my love affair with watching football. His passing was a very sad day for United fans and England fans too. RIP Sir, 'wor Bobbie.'
Dont forget the balls!. I thought that as well about the gift...a cigarette box! Imagine that now. You'd get crucified for something like that now. It just shows though with the conditions against them as far as the pitches and equipment, just how great thoe players like Sir Bobby where. And get kicked to bits every week and just getting up and getting on with it.
@postscript67 I actually don't know to be honest. I didn't think so, but I know back then cigarette cases and things like that were more common as gifts. I'll have to find out if Sir Bobby smoked.
@@vxrdrummer I suppose cigarette boxes like that were kept in your house or office to offer cigarettes to visitors, so it was not necessarily an inappropriate gift to a non-smoker.
I was about 7 and didnt follow football then, but i wish i did seeing Bobby Charlton and George Best playing the game in the MUFC shirt. Both greats of football now gone.Gone but never forgotten.
Its when you look back like this, and it reminds you of how great he was. I didnt see him play in the flesh, but I saw him at Old Trafford a tonne of times in the stands, and was there when they named the South Stand after him. Very proud to have been there. What a player, and what a man. Mr Manchester United.

A gentleman of the game. Class. Respected by opponents. Feared by opponents. Could score with his head or either foot. Like a thoroughbred when running with the ball and a shot that was devastating. RIP, Sir Bobby.

Two things here, Press photographers surrounding the man so no one could see him, that was a little piece of history ruined by a disorganised rabble, thankfully it wouldn't happen now. Second was that pillock Docherty walking in between the players trying to be everyone's mate and shake hands with anyone he could, like Atkinson later on, they believed they were bigger than the game.
Because he lost his hair through the horror of the Munich crash, and he felt guilty for surviving when his teammates persished. So the style of hair is irrelevant
@@Jackie-ji2sj He was losing his hair from age of 19, he's quoted as saying this, yes the crash may have advanced it but like jack, they was destined to lose hair early in their lives
