Nice analogy, but with one caveat. There is a state where a slow metabolism is not ok. Most of the people I work with are eating less than they should and still can't lose kgs due to eating SAD. Once we increase calories and slowly transition them to keto, they already start losing kgs. So if you have slow metabolism but no access to energy, this is an issue.
Wow. This really helped explain l why I used to sweat so easily when I was 50lbs overweight. The last 30lbs was after adhering to a strict keto diet and not long after that, I started to, and still get cold in temps that I used to sweat in. I used to sweat profusely just walking in temps above 16 Celsius and was pretty sure I had cranial facial hyperspiration. I thought it was all due to loss of body insulation, but how the body has to go into overdrive to handle all of the carb energy I was feeding it makes total sense. I've learned so much no-BS information from you. Thanks for being so up front and transparent.

Really enjoy your presentations it makes sense of what is really happening with your own body. The car analogy was great. Being diabetic my engine still makes noise but not so much as it did and the inflammation I had has virtually gone. I know so many obese people who are on massive medications for fibromyalgia and I was heading that way myself. Still on the long road to health but with information from you I WILL get there. Keto carnivore IF for almost 3 years now. All the usual benefits including not getting sunburned and being outside is my happy place 😊. My heart rate has always been on the low side because I have been active all my life (now 64) but have recently become aware that my resting heart has felt even slower and was wondering if I should be concerned about it because I don’t think I have ever perceived it to be that slow. After watching this video, I am no longer concerned and instead celebrating that I have realized yet another benefit of the keto carnivore lifestyle.🎉
I think a piece of the puzzle is missing. It seems like if you are still eating, your body will use that little energy more efficiently and not use as much of your stored fat. Unless you are doing an extended fast, I think you will lose more fat by varying your energy intake so that your body doesn't know what to adjust to. This is why reverse dieting helps many people lose more fat than just cutting back on the amount they eat.
Dear Dr. Cywes! Of all the doctors on the RUclips you are the best! I watch every one of your videos. I'm suffering from the ulcerative colitis and am currently trying a carnivore diet. I love your videos. I was over 225 pounds (stopped weighing) 3 years ago. Off all meds. Now 165 pounds. (5 ft tall 65 year old woman) I've been on clean keto--thank YOU, Dr. Cywes, Dr. Berry, Fung, Ekberg, Berg. My BP went from 180/90's to 114/70. AIc is better-- 5.2 rather than 10.?, but that is after 5 day fasts before bloodwork, but eating OMAD, I am still in glucose burning (until about 36 hours--even eating keto!!) Just wondering why it takes 3-4 days to be solidly fat burning. My glucose is actually UP. Could you do a video on why that may happen? Is that just glucose intolerance--still? Glucose is 120 to 135 BEFORE OMAD dinner. Also 120 or so fasting glucose. It used to be 130--my doc is no longer pushing metformin. On the upside, it doesn't go up much more than that anymore especially if it eat carnivore, and I feel great. It only drops below 100 on the second or third day of a fast. I have lots of stress--money, unemployed grown kids, student loans, divorce, etc, and recently moved from a mold infested house. I sleep 4 hours. pee. Sleep 3 hours. From youtube, I'm sure my adrenals are a wreck. I'm going to give your office a call, but I'm not sure if I can afford you if medicare doesn't pay. I'D LOVE YOU TO DO A VIDEO ON WHY GLUCOSE CAN GO UP WHEN FASTING? and anything to do about it??
Wow great question . I’ve watched hundred of hours of videos I don’t have a clue for that either . Hope Dr Cywes sees this question and makes a video about it!
Ur glucose goes UP while fasting because liver is releasing from its stores. Annette Bosworth MD is great at explaining this in her work. Her book KetoContinuum is fantastic resource. Keep up the good work!
10:10 -- great set of aspirational metrics here - obviously well below what we've ever been targetting based on GP advice - that low resting heartrate has historically only been applicable to elite athletes.
My metabolism was stupid fast, shorts and t in winter, sitting there sweating. Resting heart rate under 40, blood pressure low. I have lazy thyroid now, which means I can get back to how muscular I was and not be overheated or have to eat as much. I think lazy thyroid does slow you down too much, and building enough muscle can get you to normal pace. Then there are benefits of the muscle. Seems lazy thyroid is beneficial. Perhaps not if it's totally shot
If we compare the body to an engine that runs on traditional 4star fuel, providing its looked after & run on its correct fuel it should go beyond around the clock, then you put methanol (racing fuel) into it the engine it will still run & will run like the clappers but in the long term damage will occur .
Regular exercise will increase metabolic rate, as will even regular sauna. I am assuming it's not damaging as in case of trying to burn off the excess?
I love this channel so much it's got a lot of really good information. The doc was saying about resting heart rate is is at 50. Mine sits on average around 42 I would sure love it to be a higher but I'm not sure if it matters
I've wondered if people want to raise their metabolism because they're simply trying to accomplish way more than what is humanly possible in one day. Maybe we need to live a little slower instead of making our bodies work faster. Just thinking out loud.
While ago I did 10 days fasting/cleanse on that maple syrup/ cayenne pepper lemonade only.. My weight didnt move almost AT ALL and partner had small surgery once and had to fast for like one day and eat very little after and came back half himself..
Just got my labs back after 3 months of mostly protein and vegetables. Triglycerides down from 131 to 81, A1C improved, glucose stayed low, LDLs up 10, and VLDL at 16 (high is considered over 40). Down 12 pounds. I'll take this diet all day everyday!
genuine question, if a slow metabolism is a beautiful thing and something to look for, why we trash calorie restriction diets that produce exactly that?
This makes a LOT of sense nevertheless I am soooo confused... I weigh 123kg, am 157cm in height, am 63 years of age and I'd like to lose at least 50kg. Researchers are saying we need to eat at least 1gm of protein per kg of body weight, which in my case amounts to AT LEAST 123g of protein - which is a huge amount of food (approx 20g of protein in 100g of raw beef) to have to eat every day so that I minimise muscle loss. Common sense is telling me that if I lose weight I'll lose muscle mass but I still don't know which is more important - not eat as much to get the weight off so that I take the burden off my body sooner OR eat the huge amounts of protein in order to minimise muscle loss and lose weight slower...
What about eating a little and then falling into yoyo problem, I am a victim of it. So I don't really understand what about this metabolism and eating hardly anything.

No one loses any amount of fat cells or muscle cells. You’re only born with so many fat cells and so many muscle cells - that’s it. Get it yet?, Because if you don’t “get it”? You won’t understand the very next sentence: Fat cells, just like muscle cells, don’t go away… they don’t disappear they only get bigger or they get smaller: that’s it. Nothing “eats away” at anything except perhaps cancer.

It was probably a mixture of fats and carbs and possibly low protein? Eating every few hours or at one sitting and long fasting period? If you want to lose weight carbs must be low to burn body fat. It needs consistency to get rid of sugar in your body stored and begin burning body fat. Id encourage to search "dr sten eckberg mathematics of weight poss" its the best video to explain things best. Your body will respond to the conditions you give it and you want a low insulin state.

Get it yet?, Because if you don’t “get it”? You won’t understand the very next sentence:
Fat cells, just like muscle cells, don’t go away… they don’t disappear they only get bigger or they get smaller: that’s it.
Nothing “eats away” at anything except perhaps cancer.
😂 I own a hybrid. When I come to a light, the engine turns off. Thank you for the lesson.
I’m still using a lot of insulin as a type one diabetic even though I’m eating hardly any carbs.
Do you have Dr Bernstein' s book and protacol?
@@jenjabba6210 yes. But still not easy trying to regulate all this.
@@jimlewin8042 how long have you been doing it for now? Is there something sneeky in the food youre eating that may be working against you? Msg..maltodextrin (powdered splenda and sugar free jello, etc), you arent fully gluten free and eating store ketobreads/dirty keto products.. What do you eat?
@@dana102083 I am actually doing the BBB&E right now. At first I had to keep correcting my low blood sugar’s with carbohydrate pills. But today seems a little better. Still a little low this morning but what usually happens is it’ll start to sky rocket (dawn phenomena) and I can never never give enough insulin to fix it until my blood sugar goes way down again. This whole type one just sucks. Many people have great success doing BBB&E but I have this whole other issue to contend with. But I’m trying so hard just to work through. This literally is my last hope. I’ve had uncontrolled diabetes for so long I’m thinking any day could be my last. Thanks for you concern.
@@jimlewin8042 are you using a pump? A video by Dr Baker "what's the scientific basis for eating garbage" was just released today. Watch it. Might help a little. There are a few others. Ill try to find for you. Also, doesn't Dr Bernstein have a RUclips channel? You could contact him. He use to have live stream. I know a few that say they cannot use a pump or control is bad.
Trust me, the thyroid can ruin your life.
Many actually treats their cars better than their bodies. That’s sick, but it’s true.
lol, I'm 109 lbs and sit on the couch and my bg goes up! I wish I could understand; I am jealous.
Hmmm so i with almost only half of average BMR i should NOT be jealous of people with average/above average BMR? And be happy with my damn longevity / predisposition to high LLD and no heart failures in family until age when its a miracle you are still alive genes ..?
❤
I was on a first aid course guy next to me 18stones and BP was 170/110 on meds
Mine was 105/60 according to the medical guy...he's ok but my BP is dangerously low..go fiqure
What would you say to someone who gained weight on 500 calories per day?
He would probably say they are lying about the 500 calories.
@@ellek7233 Thank you for your thoughts. It’s strongly perceived/believed that going that low on calories wreaked their metabolism. Dr. Cywes seems to think of that possibility as BS. It wasn’t until they increased calories that the weight started coming off. Some call it needing to “reverse diet”. Is this what he is seeing and calling out as BS?
@Torchlight31 Thank you for the well thought out response. Can I break down what you have said to this bottom line? And that is (Yes, the metabolism was wreaked and the only fix at that point is to eat more to get the body out of starvation mode.)?
@@NewSorpigal1 Thanks again! I do think this is what the Dr. Is addressing. There are some very prominent influencers teaching sometimes you have to eat more to lose weight. They feel very strongly about this. And I also get frustrated and confused with this since I’m nearly always in a battle with my weight. Thanks very much for your time.
Dont take that Tesla on a long trip, it'll take 4x the amount of time to get to your destination, if your lucky. 😆
Jason Fung whom you praised in another video teaches something completely different.
Thanks for permission to eat less worry free.
😂
So wrong. Go check Brad Marshal’s theory of obesity about human torpor from unsaturated fats…
Who are you?
V200 engine lmfao
BS
Who are the "gum flappers?" I keep asking. No one ever answers. (EDIT: I know WHAT a gum flapper is. My question is WHO is he referring to. Sheesh. Reading is fundamental.)
People pumping out "fake" unproven jabber nonsense.
(Just my take on it!!!!)
Gum flappers are all the smart Alec know it all's who butt in and start trying to make you stop what you are doing all because they don't agree theyshould mind their own business and leave other people alone everybody is different and what works for one doesn't for someone else
@@NewSorpigal1 People that say they want to feed their kids a "normal" meal heaping mountains of sugar on their plate.
@@NewSorpigal1 The "balanced" diet bros xDDDDDD
