I am a appliance repair technician and I’m currently employed with GE, I worked for Samsung for several years prior to my switch. In my opinion and experience, never buy a LG or Samsung! And if you do, make sure you purchase at least a 5 year warranty on them. And be sure to have a secondary fridge in the garage. The compressors are garbage and their ice makers are a joke. Waaaay to many issues with design and workmanship. Hell samsungs new design doesn’t even have ice in the door, they moved it to the freezer! (Bespoke)
All appliances will last you 5-7 years before you’ll need a major repair.
Just buy within your budget, avoid bells and whistles, stay away from Sam and Lg and make sure you buy a extended warranty. That’s all I have.
Thanks for sharing your expertise! I'm currently looking to replace my 28 year old GE Profile refrigerator; it still works but I notice occasionally some frozen water on the floor of the freezer. My local appliance repair/service store said they won't even take a Samsung or LG refrigerator in to repair! They said they are the most unreliable, temperature fluctuations, and notorious for compressor failure. Sticking with GE or Whirlpool....
My daughter bought a used Samsung in 2012. She has never had an issue with it. Still running strong, no compressor problems. In 2013 we bought a Kenmore French door with water and ice dispenser in the door. The fridge was purchased at Sears. It lasted 8 1/2 years. It actually was an LG, made in China. We did like it, but the compressor died and we decided to throw our money towards a new unit. We bought a similar model GE. The actual model is GE GFE28GYNFS. The purchase was in Feb 2022 from Lowe's. We ended up paying around $2,000 for it. Now 15 months later, the compressor made in Singapore has died. Fortunately we bought the 5 year warranty. But we lost all food in our fridge and freezer because it quit while we were on vacation. Lost about $500 and it will be another 2 weeks before the replacement compressor will be installed. In the meantime, we bought a $200 mini fridge to survive the 2 weeks. I'm hoping my GE compressor issue is rare and not common like it was with the LG/Kenmore.

@@jimclifford5434Is your GE the one with the Twin Cooling system and LED lights? I wanted that one and am doing research about it now. I have found several comments from people who say the compressor died. There is a great video on RUclips from an appliance repairman who says to stay away from external water & icemakers or anything too complicated. Maybe the twin cooling system is causing this fridge to fail?

How on earth can Samsuck be on this list? The class actions alone should put it on the DO NOT BUY list. LG has bad compressors as well. Stay far away from Samsuck and LG. Please do your research in public groups.
Yes, there arw not many certified techs out there that want to deal with LG and SS. Also, ordering parts and waiting time are also the hassle when dealing with them too. Been there, done that and never again

Consumer reports and numerous other reviews have LG as #1 so I'm sending a bias
I don't know about Samsung but LG redesigned all their compressors in the last few years, as have many other companies after switching to R600. Since then, data collected by Yale Appliances suggest that they are the most reliable brand.
There's no reason to judge the new compressors based off the old.

My Samsung Smart Hub died in 6 months, the compressor went out. Getting a full refund but horrible.
My LG compressor stopped working 1 year and few months. They replaced it, it worked 3 more years without a problem. Few months before 5 full years and for technicians could not get it to work. The temp in the fridge is 60
No ice in sight, no freezing.
Finally, honest comments & reviews, from real people, about longevity and repairs (every other search pushes how it looks and all the bells and whistles). Almost impossible to find. I suppose the days of having the ugly 30 year fridge that just won't die, are about gone and we're forced to accept the fact that a $2000 - $6000 purchase is only going to last 8-10 years (if you're lucky). So..this is what I've gleaned from all the comments - avoid LG and Samsung. We have a KitchenAid that we purchased in November of 2017. Six repair companies and $800 later, it's still not cooling and shows a Power Failure every 3- 4 minutes. Constant beeping and whirring and buzzing - it's the audio version of being waterboarded daily. Control Board issue we thought. Replaced it. Still not working. Waiting for the warranty company to "decide" if they'll replace (code for: "here's your ACME brand option or take a check for $1200 to replace what will now cost you close to $4000).So what's everyone's consensus for the best fridge (not necessarily budget, but don't need or want all the Tech thingy's), with the least amount of trouble.
That why I do not buy premium brands anymore, nothing lasts. The best option is to look at getting a $1,000 refrigerator (with no extra fancy features), and then try to get an old one as a backup and store it in the garage (for people who have space). Unless an unlimted budget, then can get a Sub-Zero model that is still made in the USA (not all of them are, even with Sub Zero brand).
I have a similar problem with my Whirlpool. It's a french door, bottom freezer with an ice maker in the left door and in the freezer section. We've replaced the thermistor 3 months after purchase(2019)), LED light failures, ice maker failures and now it intermittently stops cooling ~every few weeks.
My research has led me to agree with the video. The fewer options, the better. At this point I'm looking at Bosch, GE(US built) or maybe a Kitchen Aid. My wife really wants french door style but no more in door water dispenser or duel ice makers.
I would NEVER recommend anything Samsung.
I've had no luck with most brands sold in the USA, Frigidaire, Samsung, GE and terrible Whirlpool. All crap, all I want is a fridge freezer that does just that, no WiFi no bells and whistles.
I have a samdung and have had it for several years..never had a problem with it

I don't believe in buying appliances from cell phone companies. I tried and well it didn't go well for me. I have old (very) appliances that are still kicking but it's getting time to some of them. I don't need smart appliances, I need reliable ones.
I mean, Samsung is a megaconglomerate. They are a “cellphone company” that also makes displays in practically every category, Oil tanker ships and other special purpose ships, and Main Battle Tanks for South Korea.
Garbage company though, responsible for a lotta goddamn deaths, but a helluva lot more than a mere cellphone company. It’s straight up a Cyberpunk Megacorp.
I just had to purchase and I chose the Frigidaire. I was complaining to the installer about appliances today and asked him about his experience. He said..."Whatever you do don't buy a Samsung refrigerator"...FYI!
Went shopping for appliances in northwest Houston at a Best Buy Discount store, Highway 249 and 1960. It was a newly opened location, and the store's inventory was primarily returned appliances. Most of the appliances were Samsung and LGs. Doesn't say much about the quality of today's products!!!
I have a Whirlpool freezer on the bottom, Stainless works great. Don't use the ice maker ever had

I tend to disagree with your assessment, LG and Samsung are the worst to buy because they are almost impossible to repair, they only look good, if you want reliable service and performance, GE, Frigidaire or Whirlpool the best way to go
Apparently, these guys are more marketing than the people who "fix" the problems. I agree with you. I think they are here b/c they are getting paid. Not b/c they care about us.
After buying a suite of Samsung appliances 6.5 years ago, I have had problems with every appliance, some more than once and ongoing. I will NEVER buy another Samsung appliance in my life!!!!! When you recommend Samsung as number 2, I know you are bogus.

Can't understand why LG & Samsung make so many top fridge reviews? Are they PAYING for these endorsememts? Quora and several other reviewer websites (especially actual repair techs) aggressively dispute these glowing endorsements. My consumer report rated best buy LG fridge lasted 4.8 years into its 5 year sealed components warranty, half of the industry standard for a fridge in general. Can't get LG auth. Svc center to answer repeated warranty svc calls, do these reviewers realize that a warranty is only a warranty if its executed or honored? Reviews are encouraged while the consumer is still in the honeymoon stage of appliance ownership, true performance of anything should include product longevity in its review, which most of the time does not get into the review or the website shuts down before the new wears off of the appliance that should last 12 years (refrigerators)
Yep, If Whirlpool asked for my review today, I'd give them a zero star.
I paid for a year's subscription to Consumer Reports. Under refrigerators LG and Samsung have made the top of the list in all categories. Are they truly a reliable source when you're hearing negative reviews by common people. Then you have CR giving high scores to those brands. The dishwasher and range I just purchased had high scores by CR and reviews matched up to those online --- Idk if I'll ever figure out which one to purchase.
I just ordered the Miele Freestanding Pigeon Pair. The best fridge and freezer I have come across with 10 years warranty.

Agree about LG . 5 years and the compressor died. The Amana I had before was still running after 25 years when I thought I upgraded.
My last fridge was an Amana. It lasted about 3 years. I replaced it with a Samsung and it’s lasted about 10 years so far. However, I don’t buy them with anything but an in freezer ice maker, so there is less to go wrong. I also live alone so I don’t have the doors opened and closed several times a day. This may account for my last one lasting so long.
I couldn't agree more. We had nearly the exact same experience!! And all 7 of the repair people we have surveyed today agree about not buying an LG refrigerator. Loved ours but died and UNREPAIRABLE after 6 years!

i have Frigidair white fridge manufactur date is 09/2006 still going strong.
My Samsung died in three months. Started with freezer failing now the fridge is also bad. Lots of spoiled food. trying to get service now...apparently a widely known issue.
Update: no support from Brick/Samsung. Replaced with a whirlpool/maytag side by side at my expense built in MI.

I can't believe you are recommending a Maytag refrigerator. How about focusing on overall customer satisfaction and repair history. My new $3600 Kitchenaid is horribly unreliable.

I'm on my 2nd LG. 1st one lasted 2.5 years. 2nd one now is 3.5 years. Compressors failed. 1st one got a deal to replace with exact unit instead of replacing compressor. This one I'm junking because I don't want the hassle. Ice maker was great and they held perfect temperature. But when the compressor starts going out it becomes very noisy. No mo LG for me. GE is now owned by the Chinese. So its going to be a whirlpool with as few bells and whistles as possible.
So are we just going to ignore the class action suit against LG and their crappy compressors ?!! Ha Ha !!
I believe LG has two class action suits pending. There are hundreds of complaints that they don’t cool due to the compressor design. So, how did they get on this list?

has LG and Samsung got better in 2023. They have so many problems. I bought a LG lasted four years and died. Never would buy another one. LG washers and dryers lasted eight years, washer had rust on it, front loader. Looking to buy used ones for now on.
Nope, LG is still garbage. We're on our third compressor 6 years in. Even the LG repairman told us to avoid the brand.

Bought GE French door, water, ice dispenser. Compressor failure 11 months. Covered under warranty. Repairman stated 6th one with same problem within a 4 month time frame. Will never buy GE again

Got one Kenmore 2001, 28cubic side by side still running. However, front ice box not work well last several years, right side refrigerator, food, fruits, things get frozen in the winter no matter how you set the temperature . Thinking get a new fridge and still researching for the best one. May be a dull whirlpool but may last!!!?👍

My previous fridge was Whirlpool still going strong and had only ice maker/grinder replaced otherwise still working until I upgraded my kitchen - I would buy Whirlpool Frigde at the blink of eyes.....my LG counterdepth Instaview purchased in Dec 2022 having ice production issue ...replaced ice maker and now asked me to set the freezer at -4F in order to make ice at fast rate ...arghh,,,..

I had an LG french door frig that failed three months before the warranty was over. They sent a repair guy who worked on it for 3 hours and finally gave up and finally ordered a new compressor; he stated it was leaking freon. Three weeks later he installed the new compressor and guess what, it still leaked. He leak checked the frig for three hours and finally gave up. He stated the leak was somewhere in the freon distribution in the body of the fridge and couldn't fix it without disassembling it entirely thus it was unrepairable. I spent the next five months fighting with LG to replace the fridge but they stalled by slowly escalating my problem through three levels of "customer service". I finally gave up having wasted nine months of time with LG. The bottom line is, DO NOT PURCHASE LG, THEY WILL NOT STAND BEHIND THEIR WARRANTY!

Anyone recommending a Samsung appliance should have their license to review appliances revoked. I'm in the market now to replace a Samsung Frig. We tried two and both failed early. Our current frig has had both icemakers fail. The right door fell off one day. I bought a new steel hinge and fixed that myself. But seriously a door should not fall off. The bottom freezer handle broke off. A common problem because you are pulling on an ALL PLASTIC hinge. A problem Samsung doesn't care to fix. We have ice building up now in the refrigerator and the freezer stopped freezing properly a long time ago. If you are thinking of buying a Samsung try talking to some friends that have owned one for five or more years. They will tell you not to buy one.

LG compressor #2 died at just over 5 year mark. Quoted $800 for labor but no compressors available.
No more $3,500 garbage. Spent $1,300 on Hisense. May also be junk, but cheap junk, not expensive junk.

My kenmore Sear, 28 CB , side by side, 2001 still running but front ice box doesn’t work well anymore. Refrigerator side, food often get frozen in the winter no matter how I set the temperature on the unit.

My LG fridge stopped cooling in under 3 years. Just an anecdote.
My Lg ThinQ stop cooling, no ice or water dispensing with an error message currently on the display.

Is there one that will last more than a yr? Clearly LG ,Samsung and I think kitchenAid have committed appliance, Harry Carey with their lousy compressors that only last three months.
Maytag is the worse, we had problem since we bought it and after 4 years I have to buy anther fridge, just waste of money.

Samsung has the worst refrigerator product ever. Ice Maker repair issues are causing other components to fail and those problems are yours to deal with. I have been dealing with them now for 6 years. Samsung customer reps keep calling my 7 yr refrigerator old! The coupon they offer to buy a new one is because they can't seem to get the thing repaired is 50% off a hyped up suggested retail price which after all said and done offers about a real savings of $200.00 off the local pricing. Love the 4 door French fridge when it works.

Terrible reviews….quite clearly they’re only interested in glitz and glamour. No mention that you’ll be replacing your Samsung or LG in less than 5 years, never mind the aggravation you’ll have with breakdowns. Unfortunately, in 2023, most refrigerators are junk. It boils down to picking the one that is the best of the worst.
