- The COPO 9560 used an all-aluminum 427 cu in (7.0 L) big-block called the ZL-1 and was designed specifically for drag racing. The package was conceived by drag racer Dick Harrell, and ordered through Fred Gibb Chevrolet in La Harpe, IL, with the intention of entering NHRA Super Stock drag racing. Just 69 ZL-1 Camaros were produced, the engine alone cost over US$4,000 - nearly twice that of a base coupe with a V8. Though rated at 430 hp (321 kW) gross, the ZL-1 made 376 SAE Net HP in its "as installed" state. With exhaust changes and some tuning, the horsepower jumped to over 500 hp.
The ZL1 engines were hand assembled in a process that took 16 hours each, in a room that Corvette Chief Engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov described as "surgically clean". All ZL1 engines were manufactured at the Tonawanda Assembly Plant before being installed in Corvettes, Camaros, or sold over the counter to racers. This car came with a 5yr/50,000 bumper to bumper warranty.
Bob Jane in Australia bought 2 ZL1 camaro's brand new, using one for drag racing and one for Australian production racing. The drag car was sold a few years later as was the circuit car in the mid 70's.Jane then tracked down the circuit car and fully restored it and still has it currently,I believe it won the championship 3 years running.
I'm with ya...I would like to have any of those including your 302 z-28...thanks for cking this one out!

@Blackscorpion1963 It's all good...I understand that there is a lot of BS on the internet, not to say I have not been fooled..at SDTV I will always tell you what I believe to be true and if for a second I don't think it is..I will tell you...I talked to Floyd this morning, said when he has time he will get that information for us..he has a list of all ZL-1 built but thinks it may say that info on the sandwich board by the car.
No problem...glad you enjoyed it....I hate that is is tubed to....but back in the day it was just another Camaro..
@Blackscorpion1963 The vin would not tell what number ZL-1 it is..it's one of the 69 original ZL-1's made in 1969..The gentleman telling me about it is Floyd Garrett he is one of these authorities in the automotive industry you speak of...
@BswiftxSwag80 They say 13.8 at 105..but the tires sucked back than...no telling what it would do if you could get it to hook up...thanks for cking it out!
Hate to hear that Brother....it is a place every Car Guy should visit at least once..
I hear ya...glad you liked it....thanks for stopping by!
@Blackscorpion1963 I have no idea..didn't think to ask..would have been cool to know...but has nothing to do with weather the car is real or not?
@Blackscorpion1963 That maybe the dumbest comment any one has ever left...thanks for cking it out though!
@V8TransAmGTA I agree...just makes you want to jump in and nail it...thanks for cking it out!!
@pndmnky Man..I would hate to have one of these and have sold it...thanks for cking it out!
If you ever get in the area make sure you do...very cool place!
@fbs9494 lol..that's probably not going to happen...thanks for cking it out though..
It's not a problem with a auto..there are a lot of cammed up cars that are autos
Per ScottieDTV, I grew up with a guy who's dad is/was Dicky Harrell's cousin! I remember my friend having pictures of Harrell's Camaros on the wall in his room; having NO idea re the historical significance. My brother ended up with a '69 SS/RS 396-375, whose engine was replaced by an aftermarket L-88 with 550-600 hp, measured. Loud and FAST. A predator. I haven't heard that engine since 1974, and I can STILL hear it's angry rumble. Beautiful sound.
May not be the official name...but it's the one that everyone called it
Really wish I could own an original zl1, yenko, or copo camaro. Me and my dad have a 1968 z28 302 small block. not perfect yet but we brought it back from nothing over the past 15 years or so and we're proud of it. Always gonna love the camaros
@MadBadVoodo One of the baddest!!!...thanks for cking it out!!
I'm slightly aroused. ZL1 in orange... Don't get any better than that!
For sure....Glad you liked it!
hugger orange one of the best gm colors, when it goes good with black rally stripes or white...you know its good
@RamblinAround It's the real deal Muscle Car Museum...plenty more rare cool stuff to come from there...thanks for cking it out Jeff!!
no problem man. And yeah the little 302 small block is pushing out closer to 350 rather than the 290 and it really likes to scream
@jdh10475 Glad you liked it...thanks for cking it out!!
@ScottieDTV I re watched the video...it says on the board...25 of 69..I also have a shot of the window sticker..
@kingofthecloset67 Me to Brother...I just put up a Yenko...ck that out when you have time...thanks for stopping by!!
Man, they have all the best muscle cars at that place. It's hard to beat a ZL-1...thanks for giving us a look. Great vid my friend!
@gegu256 lol..I left a standing offer of $500 over sticker myself...thanks for cking it out!!
lol...every now and than you see me with out them
I could not agree more...thanks for cking it out!
@smokemadbuds991 Ya...I'm stoked to see it back on the road to...thanks for cking it out Brother!!
Good...you should record it for history at least
there were so many left overs they couldnt sell they pulled out the original motors and sold them seperate. very cool.
I have it on here...that's a really col car to
Yep...it was very common back than...thanks for the info and for cking out my video!!
This is the best year of Camaro, most beautiful, even with a 250 six cylinder they ran quite fast. I'd love to have one again, A ZL1 would be SOOOO COOOL.
No problem...glad to do it!!
Great combo, we needed to see more of the ZL-1 under the bonnet
@callrick1914 Will do...stick around...thanks for cking out my videos...
Cool...Now they make them..and stop!!
@Movickrox lol...little less hair...thanks for all the help Brother!!
lol..like they say...hind sight is 20/20...thanks for cking it out!
@psychoclown420 Thank you Brother!!
I agree...they are truly classics...thanks for cking this one out!
I'm with ya Brother...thanks for stopping by and checking this one out!
Cool...sounds like a bad ride!
lol..glad you liked it...
Cool!
That's right..
@ScoobyDigites Cool...thanks for cking it out!!
where is the instergram unit in the passenger car"s console, i don't see it?
Why not?
Since the rear tubs have already been altered and can never be original again, I wouldn't put them back to factory spec. The altered tubs may slightly lower the Camaros value but the wider tires on w/factory steel wheels has enhanced the traction & performance. plus... they look great
Thanks for taping this gorgeous Camaro
Cool!
Wow that thing is pristine. Looks like a hell of a collection. I'd love to just walk around in there.
Cool
Yes he is...thanks for cking out this video!
No Problem....thanks for checking it out!!
My dad's friend has a Red ZL1, We got a ride in it last summer, It's got power.
wow I live in philly and you would have never known there was a chevrolet dealership in west philly on 48th and chestnut back in the day looking at it now even though a high school is currently located there.
It's no wonder they didn't sell. You had to pay all that money for a supposed "factory race car" that didn't even come with headers.
Agreed!!!...thanks for checking it out!!
My Uncle Bought A 69 ZL-1 In 1970 Off A Showroom Floor At A Dealership Around Philly. It Wasn't Sold As The Car Cost SOOO Much And Languished Till He Bought It! Hmmmm....
Cool..Thanks for checking this one out here!!
He mentions in the video that Tony Young out of NC owns this car. I visited his shop several years ago. Its called Camaro Specialties. He had this car in the back of the shop so of course I had to take a look for myself! Since i went to high school with his son, i asked could they fire it up one time. I'm telling you that the sound that motor makes in person is just ridiculous ( .600 lift cam with 12.5:1 compression)! And to think it came from the factory like that. I feel very privileged just to have seen and heard one up close
For sure....Thanks for checking it out here!!
My favorite car ever made by Chevrolet. The lightest, baddest big block ever made by Chevy stuffed into a plain jane, sleeper base model Camaro. No stripes, spoilers, fancy wheels, SS badges, or any of that nonsense. Definitely my type of muscle car
Right on...Thanks for checking this one out here!!
@TheMoonchick Thanks!!!
cool...is it in a garage I hope?!
I'm a Mopar guy but this is my favorite Chevrolet ever made. Well it's between a 69 ZL1 and a 62-63 Impala SS Z11. Thats a bad machine right there
For sure....Thanks for checking it out here!!
Not sure if it's true but I've heard that a ZL1 427 big block weighs the same as a 327 small block. If so that makes for a ridiculously fast car
They were that!!
They built 22 cars with automatics.
I know where one is. I'm going to see if I can make a video of it. Been sitting since tha '80s!
true but zl1 was the name of the all aluninum 427 but the copo with the zl1 motor was a god in the musle car war
Most likely they have a high st. converter Myself i wanted the fun factory of a 4 speed, however later in time as people improved auto. mods i think the auto was more popular and probably more consistent but it was fun to rev up to 5 grand and dump the clutch-- lots of comparisons between old and new and the new are faster, technology takes over, all head and flow work is the key
@ScottieDTV I agree Floyd Garrett is indeed one of the authorities. Please understand I am not trying to be pedantic, just accurate. There are only THREE (3) real genuine numbers matching '69 ZL1's left in existence. That is their drivelines match e.g. engine, transmission, and diffs match #s. They are therefore pretty much the rarest muscle/pony cars on the planet. I'd say the car in your vid looks real enough and am prepared to accept Floyd's statements. Thanks for sharing it is appreciated.
@ScottieDTV Any authentic muscle car such as the infamous 1969 ZL1 Camaro must have authentic credible verification that it is indeed what it actually is. Such credible verification usually comes via written documentation from authorities within the automotive industry and is directly related to the car through its various identification areas on the car including the tag/s on the inside of the engine bay, engine block, heads, transmission etc etc. It has everything to do whether the car is real
my dad picked one up from dick harrell . he was the servce manager at a gm dealership in topeka, ks. out of all the cars he played with, he insisted this one was the beast....the car was sold off the used car lot, later wrecked and eventually rebuuilt..if he only would have had a clue to keep some of those cars...
Cool...thanks for the info
Might stall a lot with such a rough cam and an auto-- Those cars with big cams had higher idle speeds maybe over a 1000-- also ZL-1 had higher compression than the 427/425-- i had a 427/425 in a 67 RS camaro with 456 gears and a 4 speed
This is car #25 of the 69 built. Ordered by Fred Gibb Chevy but this is one of the 20 cars Chevrolet reinvoiced and shipped to other dealers. This one ended up at Roger Penske Chevy in Philedelphia.
#25 VIN# 124379N609856. Sent to Roger Penske Chevrolet in Philadelphia.
Cool!
I have always heard as early as the late 80’s that 10 ZL1’s were automatic and then obviously 59 four speed cars
It's possible...
What a magnificent car, but to produce it with that granny collumn shifter is wrong on so many levels. The collumn shifter had no business on any Camaro, but a COPO? I was shocked!
Crazy...I know!!
Thanks Brother!
YOU WOULD THINK THAT CAR WOULD HANDLE FAR BETTER THAN L88 CAR . MAYBE LIKE A TRANS AM Z28 ?
Maybe...
While looking at '69 Camaro vids, I run across this old one of yours Scottie (that's right, I have to admit, I haven't watched all of 'em yet). You happened to mention paying a year's wage for one of these gems, and that would have been rare back then. But when I think about it, that isn't too unusual at all, today. There are plenty of plain ol' production cars or trucks you can easily pay 30, 40, or even (diesel pick-up) 50 grand for, and look at how many they sell. It's crazy, the price of new vehicles now days, and they sell.
Lookin' like maybe this one could be the pre-Oakley days...lol. Things have kind of evolved over the many "CarShows" you've attended. You're a TV personality now. You're not just on the "news", you are the "news" now days. I know because I stood right beside the TV camera, on a day, when you, were the story (DirtyDozen). Keep it up Scottie.
You right Brother...but now a days...we are all about debt...back than...people did better with there money.....keep in mind...no matter how big I get...I will always be just Scottie D to you....lol
Lol I was just at that museum a few days ago. They got a daytona yellow Yenko sitting at the other end.
It's to bad you didn't check out the 1970 Gran Torino(Yellow). That Garrett Museum has. From my understanding it 's only 1 of 2 ever made with 429 SCJ and if it wasn't for the actions of the great Bud Moore back in 1971 and get Ford to sell both of them for a total of $1200.00.We might not of been able to admire them today. The other one(which is orange) was recently sold for $459.000. Seeing it in the back ground of your video just reminded me of that story. Thanks...

Cool COPO ZL-1 Carmaro! I remember seeing a rare 69, hugger orange, years ago (1996? can't remember) at Doug Jenkins Garage in or near St Louis MO. It was being restored and was painted but was still stripped down bare (no glass or interior or anything) when I saw it. I remember what it cost to paint it, $$ looked great though. Very cool muscle car museum and very interesting video! Love the history and the interview with Floyd Garrett! Keep up your great video's Scottie!
+Thomas Jent Thank you...Glad you enjoyed the video!!
This car is obviously a clone as no where does it list which one of the 69 it actually is.
Now that is a Bad Ass Car!!!
Neat video Scottie! My father in law ordered and sold # 69 which was also a hugger orange one. Huebner Chevrolet in Carrollton Ohio. He was a Yenko and Hurst dealer. ( Chevy, Olds) I enjoy your videos!
Thank you...wow...how cool is that!!
im 16 and looking for a first car. i love the 1968-1973ish era of cars. i have a max of 35k roughly and i love the camaro, nova, challenger, firebird etc. what would be the best car for a first car. i need your help guys thanks
It's personal opinion......they would all be cool cars...
yep but most were on the drag cars because since it shifts quicker than manual but very very few were on the street cars only 6 or 9 were on street cars the others were on the drag cars
I think the ZL-1 engines were left over from Jim Hall's Chevy Chaparral road racing program. That program built some all-aluminum small block Chevy engines as well...they too are like trying to find hens' teeth! Great cars..
Hum...I don't know....But I agree..Awesome piece of Muscle Car history..
the all aluminum racing motors were 377 cubic inches in the grand sport vette
Thank you so much for posting my favorite car!
I will. Ill make a video if he'll let me lol
they never call those camaro's a zl1 it was copo
nice and i think back then the zl1 ran in the 10s
Camaro was the only car you could order rear disk brakes back then.
Cool!
