I saw this movie for the first time with a live orchestra as a young teen with my then girlfriend. We were the youngest people there lol. I loved it, it was a great experience, I thought it was hilarious. Gene Kelly’s wife was there too! Turns out they didn’t actually mix the water with milk to make it show up better and Gene Kelly slipped shorter skirts past the censors by shortening them after they were measured. One of the best theatre experiences of my life, it was amazing. Can’t wait to pick up the 4K.

Aside from The Wizard of Oz, Singin' In the Rain is probably one of the very first Hollywood musicals I ever watched. From the get-go, I immediately LOVED it and there was a period in my life when I was a teen that I'd watch Singin' In the Rain at least once every single day (this went on for, like, 5 years, I kid you not). I know every line, every lyric, every tap, every EVERYTHING of this film.

I've not seen Singin' in the Rain. Or at least not since I was a kid. I went through a phase [if 20-40 can be called a phase] when I convinced myself I hated all musicals. As an entire genre. Then I shared a house with a friend who was musicals obsessed. She got me to watch and go see musicals. So...money dependent and UK availability dependent...I might buy this. And The Wizard of Oz (which I adore and have seen on the Big Screen at the BFI).

    • @VanessaButtino

@@Lokster71 Granted, musicals aren't for everybody BUT I sincerely feel that Singin' In the Rain (and The Wizard of Oz) are exceptions to that rule. My sister, who absolutely hates musicals, actually doesn't mind Singin' In the Rain. She says she can tolerate it. Still, if you watch it and end up not liking it, that's okay!

When I was a teenager I didn't like musicals at all. However, when I watched Sing In The Rain on a black and white tv set I loved it. And I am a typical Aussie bloke. I bought the soundtrack on CD and VHS tape in the 1980s and I still own all the DVD versions too. I can't wait to buy this in 4K.
I am waiting for Showboat (1950), Annie Get Your Gun (1951), and Oklahoma (1955), 42nd Street (1933) to be released on 4K.

Most likely others have commented this, but you left out a very important fact this being that the original 35mm film negative was destroyed in a fire. Being so this new 4K version is really a work of love and we con forgive any “problems” with the quality. Anyway a great review and I have placed an order because of it.

    • @CerealAtMidnight

I'm aware of the statement that the OCN was destroyed but I don't know the source of the new transfer, so I avoided discussing it at all in an attempt to prevent speculation, which I don't think is fair to include in reviews. But if WB minted this 4K restoration from existing prints or other elements, it truly is an exceptional work of art worthy of the film's legacy.

Now that I have a PS5 I sometimes put the disc directly in there even though it doesn’t support Dolby Vision. I do not have a stand alone UHD player they are just expensive for a good one.

I’ve heard the negative was destroyed, but this movie totally appears to be sourced from original elements, so I dunno. I don’t think WB has revealed the source, but I could be wrong. If it’s from a print and not OCN, then lots of people have gone frame by frame to erase any and all blemishes.

    • @SwingBandHeaven

@VIDEOgameDROME I ask because the technology does exist to fill in the missing frame. This was done for the restoration of Richard III where bits edited out were put back in but there were a few missing frames and cgi filled in the gaps to make it seamless. But with singing in the rain that jump is so well known I think people just accept it for what it us.

Is the modern movie musical, as seen in West Side Story, evidence that the spirit of Singin' in the Rain is alive and well? Do these modern performers have the same charisma and talent that the actors who grew up in the Vadeville era displayed?

@@CerealAtMidnight The tendency in contemporary films has been to edit so fast that you can't actually see what the actors are doing seamlessly, which is a lazier strategy in terms of the actors themselves. A dance can be manufactured from bits. But watch Fred Astaire movies and he dances entire scenes without cuts because he felt to do otherwise was cheating. You have to actually be a perfect dancer to do it that way.
