If you enjoyed this musical retrospective, check out my latest analysis on the music of Metroid Prime 2: Echoes for its 20th anniversary! ruclips.net/video/MR-STWnl32Y/видео.htmlsi=R_4gWVPNG2PAaejQ
I always thought it was funny they released both Prime and Fusion together almost like "hey, if Prime tanks, then at least the fans will have the next entry in the series" and instead both games are beloved with Prime utterly killing it in terms of popularity.
I like to think all the game's music outside of menu and cutscene themes are diegetic, and that Samus has her suit generate and play them for her while she explores cus she gets bored shooting hornoads from time to time. Whenever she hears one she really likes, she bookmarks it to later be remixed in a different adventure, or to just headbang to in her gunship later. Ex brinstar depths, lower norfair, and the Ridley theme when she's feeling angy
@@GamingWithCalvin1 I simply imagine that while she is very serious, Samus is ALSO totally the sort of person who would have her suit do that. Like, I always perceived her that way; what you said just fit into my pre-existing perception :)
First time I saw Metroid was in the Nintendo news letter they sent out before Nintendo power existed. This was around 1987ish. I was fascinated by the artwork they showed. I ended up borrowing the original Metroid nes from a kid in school. I didn't want to give the game back and the kids mom came over to my house to get it. When I found out Super Metroid was coming to the snes I lost my mind. I bought it day 1. I was 17 at the time. It was a long wait for Prime. I was in my 20's when I first saw screenshots in a magazine. I was there on launch day for Prime. I think I was 24 or 25 at the time. It was long wait after Super Metroid. I love the Prime series and Echo's is my favorite of the trilogy. I've wanted the soundtrack for the Prime games for long time. Some of the best video game music ever made. The only other series with music as good is Castlevania.
I’m glad I’m not the only one that felt scared with chozo ruins main theme. Those whooshes and the sandy sounds that resemble steps behind samus…almost like the chozo spirits were watching over me. man. I love that.
Thank you so much! I actually just released a similar retrospective for Echoes, definitely recommend checking that out! ruclips.net/video/MR-STWnl32Y/видео.htmlsi=R_4gWVPNG2PAaejQ
@@DoominalCrossing I plan on watching it this weekend, I'm excited lol. I don't know how I haven't seen this sooner, I'm a musician and Metroid is by far my favorite series and a massive inspiration to a lot of my music (big ups to SynaMax as well).
Seriously, the Metroid Prime soundtrack holds up *_so_* well, that I can't believe some people asked for remixes of all the themes when Metroid Prime remastered came out! If it ain't broke, don't fix it! And why mess with perfection?
@@DoominalCrossing the remaster truly is beautiful, I really hope they give Echoes the same treatment eventually! I'll be looking forward to your video :D
i never could quite put my finger on why the prime soundtrack is so endearing. but you put it into words perfectly: it doesnt feel like a soundtrack. it really feels like a musicalisation of the places in the game. the instruments and sounds used are in the uncanny valley of just being sounds youd hear in such environments, yet they are also clearly music. id like to think that if you are exploring on your own like samus, an environment might really produce something close to music for you, because your brain fantasizes from isolation.
I've always thought Prime was brilliant but the world is so engrossing that as a kid I couldn't handle the fear and loneliness it conveyed and never got very far. The music was a big part of that. Much of the music is actually so unsettling that when I play the game I like to have videos like this on in the background. The remaster has inspired me to go back and beat it on the GC and even now it's almost stressful booting the game up again, but once you're in it's just stunning. I can't believe it's 20 years old, it still looks like a million bucks. Great analysis, Prime's music is so intricately produced it deserves a long discussion.
I don't upload very frequently but I'm glad you enjoyed it! Definitely looking into doing something similar for Echoes when that anniversary is upon us.
Very insightful for composers. A lot of people think about music in a limited sense, sometimes with western music theory's function harmony, or thinking the notes are responsible for the whole mood. Can't stress how important the aesthetic of the sound design and the clear references to a definite lore are, those are definitely too often overlooked. Thanks for the video to you and thatmetroidguy :) Now I do have a request, which is an analysis of how the aesthetics/visuals in the three prime games (and maybe even Hunters) are constructed and balanced, what makes them special? I've definitely never seen any other game with this kind of aesthetic that I can't really explain for myself. Have a good day and life!
Talking about the very clear and complementary color schemes, the blend of organic-ness of the alien life and metallic-ness of the industrial suits/ships/weapons, or the eerie-ness of the chozo/alimbics. There's also quite the bit to explore about landscapes (skytown), some puzzle rooms with very interesting shapes, and the energy (electrical shapes, the lasso, beam shoots, energy orbs, auras like Gandrayda's...).
Probably not gonna do a video dedicated solely to the art direction as that's not my field of expertise, but I would definitely talk about it in a review.
Loved the video. Reminded me of my first time playing Metroid Prime which was a copy that included Echoes demo. Very early memories but i vividly remember playing in 3rd person which later in life I learned was how Metroid Prime originally was gonna be and to my surprise later in life, i learned that I played the beta. Anyways, switching topics, when I first played prime i got so scared from Frigate Orpheon's theme upon reaching the room with the dead Parasite Queen that it took me a couple years to finally play through prime. It instantly became my favorite series of all time.
Thank you! RUclips is never going to be something I do frequently as I mostly don't like the process of video making/editing, just the final product if that makes sense. It's just a fun small channel that I like to upload to once in awhile for my small community who will hopefully get a kick out of it. But I'm always happy to have 1 more person in the club!
Fantastic work on your video. I remember buying Super Metroid as a 9 year old boy when it was first released. This made a benchmark in my life how video games should be made. Super Metroid lives on as the best game of all time.
Super Metroid is amazing. I remember playing it a couple weeks on the Wii virtual console before Prime 3 dropped & being blown away. A testament to how well it still holds up.
I always consider that sound from the chozo ruins "Vampirella" sound patch as whispers or faded signs of life and the dark fate of the chozo and the planet, all because of -an asteroid with a dangerous substance- just like the chozo lore texts that you scan.
Killer analysis. My favorite rendition of Norfair comes from Super Smash Bros. Brawl, which is even more cool to think about after you highlighted NES music being on a scale of more upbeat or atmospheric. Metroid Prime really is a miracle game.
Fantastic video from a passionate fan. I feel much of the same about the prime soundtrack, but I don't know enough about music theory to put it into words
You know, in retrospect, the Chozo Ghost theme is one of the few pieces of videogame music that makes me genuinely anxious, it really sounds off in all the right ways.
Excellent video dude! I love the explanations. I definitely relate to your early story, as we are the same age. 😁 Very well done and i hope to see more from you. Crazy to think it's been already two decades since the release of Prime!

@@DoominalCrossing Huh I never thought that to be significant in any way. I always just thought it was a part of the Chozo ruins track. Does it trigger when you enter this room specifically?
@@Bufosmixes Nope it's all just one single track. My argument that I established though was that these unconventional samples are played to blur the realm between the diegetic & non-diegetic realms of interpretation. So the "woosh" doubles not just an instrument in the piece, but as a foreshadowing to the Chozo Ghosts occupying the area who will reveal themselves later on.
