@midlevelmedia I agree it is strange I always thought DVD would disappear first but I guess they're is alot of people who still haven't upgraded to Blu-ray I'm sure alot of older people still use DVD
Your wording may seem incorrect by the casual viewer. You kept saying they abandoned the blu ray. They only abandoned the stand alone blu ray. The 4K has the blu ray also. And the price is affordable. Amazon had the 4K/blu ray combo for $24.96 which is usually the Blu ray only price. The 4K is usually $29.99 for a 4K/blu ray set. It looks like Smile 2 may be $25 as well. I like this trend. Get the blu ray and you also get a 4K if you upgrade later. People would never consider it at a higher price point.
I think this is the way to go anyway. I will never buy standalone 4k's as discs are too fragile, and unstable to buy alone. You are essentially buying a Blu-ray and a 4k as a bonus disc. +10 points if the 4k works.
What if they consolidate the release of BluRay and 4K into one package, did away with seperate BluRay, but reduced the price as they'd be lowering their distribution and production costs.
If the studios are going to lean toward releasing on 4k, then they really need to promote the product. Make the pricing a little more attractive, as well as encourage the manufacturers of 4k players to come out with newer models. And with LG getting out of the 4k business, maybe another brand could step up and fill that void (Pioneer, where are you?). A little forward thinking could go a long way.
4k numbers are low bc you need a 4k player to play those discs. All tvs now are 4k so that's not an issue but for the average Joe schmo they couldn't be bothered at all to spend more on a player for enhanced 4k quality when for the most part blu ray is "good enough." For most, DVD is good enough. 4k players are for a niche market in this economy.
I don't have a 4k player yet, but plan to in the future, so I only buy 4k's that have a blu ray included so I can watch the movie now and have 4k for the future, otherwise I won't buy 4k only releases until I get a 4k player.
Those stats are for total sales. That includes all those movies that have only DVD/Blu-ray and no 4K. They are probably looking at the stats of new release titles. New release titles are probably the audience that cares about video quality and the audience that just wants to watch it. There probably isn't a middle camp. Granted I am looking at myself being in the care that what it looks like but I never buy a Blu-ray if there is 4K option. Same with DVD, never buy if there is a Blu-ray option.
When the latest batch of Disney+ shows {*Ahsoka", "The Mandalorian" S3, "Hawkeye" and "Loki" S2), were announced in the fall as 4K only releases, The Digital Bits editor, Bill Hunt, speculated that the reason for this was that Disney (and Sony who manufacture physical media for them) didn't want to split the production run on both 4K and Blu-ray so they rolled out the 4Ks first for the Dec. 3rd release date . He also thought, Blu-rays may be coming next year. We'll see if he was right, soon enough. I can't imagine Disney/Lucasfilm and Marvel leaving on the table, the money Blu-ray collectors potentially would add to their take on those titles.
Hell, I thought I was the only one that noticed, as well. When I went to Walmart, the employee said "hmmm... they must've skipped the blu-ray", because we both noticed there was only the 4K and dvd copies available. I was so confused. I said "that can't be right. There must be a mistake". Glad I wasn't alone in this.
My concern with what is going on in Canada with Physical is growing more and more. We talk about lack of Bluray. What I'm seeing is now is a continued HUGE price increase as a lot of titles are going to Amazon only. The recent Disney 4K Star Wars/Marvel's titles skipped Walmart entirely. Only Amazon. $85 each. And Transformers, they're asking $50 for the standard 4K release. Luckily, walmart did get this one for $34.99. But if Amazon becomes the only supplier in Canada, the cost of the format is going to be ridiculous. Funny thing is Terrifier 3 they had everything. 4K standard, 4K Steel, Blur Ray, DVD and a ton of copies. This is unheard of for any other title. So I'm lost in how films are being distributed now and what studios are doing.
I think it makes sense. Even hardcore 4K collectors like us buy a lot of Blu Rays. Because there is so much out there not available on 4K and because they are cheaper. But what we actually want is everything on 4K. So yeah, it's 30 % Blu Rays but cheaper at just because stuff isn't out yet on 4K. However a studio that has the 4K master ready will make more money selling expensive 4Ks than cheaper Blu Rays. My personal opinion is that Blu Rays should have died in 2015 or 2016 so that everybody could have upgraded to 4K and we wouldn't have all those inferior Blu Rays still flooding the market. They wouldn't be as expensive also, because the maket wouldn't be split up.

Interesting to see that is happening in the US. It's the same in Canada, but I assumed they decided to leave out the BluRay in Canada. I wonder if it's their way to migrate people to 4K. Because those who have DVD only will eventually upgrade when their existing players fail, and it's not likely going to be BluRay. I haven't migrated to 4K only because I only have a regular HD TV and BluRay. I suppose when the TV and or BluRay drive fails, then I'll probably go to 4K. But until then, I don't plan on buying DVD only or 4K releases
