My #1 release of 2024, in terms of restoration quality, is The Hitcher by Second Sight....The amount of time & care they put into the restoration of this film is mind-blowing, and it's a sweet collector set....Watching The Hitcher in pristine 4K quality is an entirely different experience. In terms of the overall packaging, I'd have to give it to The Neverending Story, based on your unboxing video. I don't like the movie enough to purchase that, but good god is it tempting.
My favorites of 2024: Conan The Barbarian, High Noon, The Prisoner (TV), The African Queen, Demolition Man. But there's a lot of amazing looking box sets that I haven't seen myself (Hitchcock, The NeverEnding Story...).
My releases of the year would be Conan the Barbarian, A Simple Plan, Chinatown, Red Rock West, Breakdown, The I Love Lucy tv series and Criterion No Country For Old Men.
@@CerealAtMidnight I've heard they have a lot of AI touches in this set. I watched a few episodes and the ones I watched looked great but the AI tries to touch up the background faces. If you don't mind that?
I would need to hear from someone at Paramount that AI was used. Too many people pass these things around as facts, and they're often wrong. People trashed the Terminator 4K and it's the best the movie has ever looked.
I’m glad I got at least one of these (Conan) and others are on my wish list. When Heath said it’s the best of times and the worst of times I immediately thought “yep, because you can get everything in the best quality but you can’t buy it in person with cash,” but of course I’m only like one of 10 people (under 80) that still think like that.
You know what I've been doing lately? I've been looking around and finding a lot of "TWO DISC SPECIAL EDITION" DVD's. A lot of them were in print when DVD was new but if you buy the movie now it's only one disc. I started doing this purely by accident when I found both "Die Hard", "Men In Black II" and "Armageddon" in a thrift shop about two months ago. That's when an almost 25 year old memory was triggered: This was a big thing back in the early 2000's and, technically speaking, most of those second discs just don't exist anymore. And if it doesn't exists any more then I want it so that someone has it and I'm more than happy to share.
I have a lot of 4K discs. I am not a collector., I have them because the picture and audio quality is significantly better than streaming. I don't own any steelbooks because I dont care about the packaging. I wonder what percentage of people that are still buying discs are collectors, vs people like myself? I am appalled at the prices that discs are commanding today and fear these prices will continue to rise.
LG was apparently in 5th place in player sales. It just wasn't worth it for them to stay in. We are niche. There isn't really enough money to go around for 5+ brands but it's profitable enough for 2-3. It's just the nature of our hobby. The only concerning part is players aren't like record players where anyone can make one. You need a lot of specific parts and disc pressing plants to make the media. As long as we continue to support the boutiques, there will be a market.
So hard to choose a favorite this year. some good ones; Pat Garrett And Billy the Kid (watch the preview cut) The Hitcher No Country For Old Men Kindergarten Cop
Universal did a Deluxe blu-ray Spielberg box set a few years back. It would be nice to get a 4K set of all his Universal films, but very cost-prohibitive.
SLIVER is a 2024 release. I got my subscriber copy a week or so ago. Blows my mind that its on a ten best list, but I'll move it up in my to watch pile. It's a December 2024 release for Vinegar Syndrome. I'm ambivalent about the Hitchcock release, as I already have the Universal 4K releases, and I don't need additional biga$$ boxes. TALES OF ADVENTURE VOL. 4 can be currently ordered from the Grindhouse Video website.
I have some of those releases as well. I'd add the Raid Redemption 4k set release from Umbrella and the HellRaiser Quartet of Torment 4k set from Arrow
The US Twister came on a 66gb disc whereas the UK steelbook collectors set had a 100gb disc it has a higher bitrate main reason it had a different distributor in the UK.
My only concern about the loss of LG making players is that yes you can buy a new cassette player on Amazon but it's a terrible cassette player. Hopefully we're just not going to be inundated with awful machines
This Philips boom box is a beast, and it's got great reviews. Plus, it's from a company that's been around for a long, long time. 3,000 units sold in the last month alone. amzn.to/3BAM5wj
As long as people buy discs there will be players and yes there will be quality available. For me At this point I have amassed 5 machines capable of playing 4ks...I think I'll buy myself one more that does dolby vision for Christmas. I only have 2 that do DV
I still think that modern pop art for the Hitchcock set looks horrid. I already have Vol 1 - Vol 3 of his films and don’t have to find space to store it somewhere. No fuss, no muss.
Surprised to hear how affordable the Capra set is, even though he is not one of my favorite filmmakers. But Twister? Sorry, but that film would qualify as one of the worst that year. NO Laurel and Hardy from Flicker Alley on the list? Thanks for the overall work this year, Heath. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
if players were selling, LG wouldn't bow out and we would see more companies producing them. That is how growth works. We don't see more interest in player manufacturing at the moment because there is nothing there, financially, to entice such. We are a self sustaining hobby. We never talk about player sales. Without the players, the discs are worthless. It's hoarding hobby and those already immersed in this are keeping it afloat. In another comment, I noted there is already talk by some at Wal-Mart they will be cutting back more. There is no public visibility for hard media. It's going all online. That's not good. Out of sight is out of mind and out of mind doesn't generate interest. We already live in a culture where people watch more film on their phones than they did five years ago
Neither of them mentioned any Second Sight releases which is the best boutique company today. Kinda makes the video incorrect and not legit. The Hitcher and Blair Witch were both top 10 releases of 2024

My copy of I Love Lucy just arrived last night! I'm so excited to see how it looks in true HD.

Almost Unreal gave me a boy crush on Roxette. And it was commissioned for Hocus Pocus but not used
"Ford at Fox" is probably the closest thing to this set

Absolutely love Conan 👌👌👌
He's a funny dude

Interesting!
Can't buy a new VHS VCR. I consider that pretty significant.
There was a company that was making them a few years ago, but I can't find them now. They may have gone out of business.
Universal did a Deluxe blu-ray Spielberg box set a few years back. It would be nice to get a 4K set of all his Universal films, but very cost-prohibitive.
I have that Spielberg set and it's great, but it's only 8 movies. I can't think of anything that approaches the size or scope of the Capra set.
CDs are coming back to .
Companies are making CD players and even portable cd players are being made .

There needs to be a criterion release of the movie “Top Gun”
Never heard of it

Exactly
When Sony says they're getting out of the player market, that's when I'll really be concerned. I'll probably buy like 3 of them if that happens. 😉

LG wasn't exactly top tier with their 4K players. The other name brands make a far better product.

If you're going to challenge someone's opinion (Twisters) I wish you'd say why.

bachtuna hath spoken...
How can an opinion based video be incorrect?
@ It’s not opinion based. The Hitcher 4k limited edition is a top 10 release of the year that’s just fact not opinion.
