I don’t think one can be “wrong” in artwork ideas as it is really all about preferences. I loved the crisp white background as the flowers to me popped out more. But as someone commented it is so Japanese to keep it white. To my eye maybe a lighter hand with the iced spruce or even a very pale pink, Victorian velvet somehow made dustier looking so the color values are similar. I do love the doodling idea here. Just so clever. No matter how we do a piece it’s all about experimenting and learning what we like. So fun to play.
Thanks so much for your thoughts Dotalina. Its very helpful to hear everyones opinions. I felt very conflicted by the border when I edited the video and watched back, as I then loved the white space although it felt much too stark at the time 💕
Rewatching many of your videos. I do love the chalky watercolors myself. I just love the grunge look they give. Thanks for all of your tips and tutorials. You have taught me sooooo much
Your page is so pretty and unique, love it. With respect to the Artist Loft paints, the cheaper the paints the more chalky they are (which comes about due to the amount of filler added to the pigment). The brand of paper also makes a difference, and the texture - cold pressed is the one most people use and is slightly ridged, whilst hot pressed is very smooth allowing the paint to flow, but makes it harder to control. The Gansai Kuretake ones you have are not pure watercolours, they are more like a gouache with great coverage and vibrancy. A good student grade of watercolour paints is the Windsor and Newton Cotman range and I just watched a video the other day about Sennelier student grade and they are slightly better than the W & N. So to be honest it's a mine field out there as far as watercolour is concerned. Hope this helps. Tfs xo
Thanks so much for this Elizabeth. I have some of the W & N paints, and I think I have a small set of Sennelier too. I picked ip several pallets at the scrap store a couple of years ago which they were selling for a song. I must admit I’ve been rather intimidated at the thought of using them, but I want to compare all of my watercolour products so I can see their differences and this month is a great way for me to experiment. Hugs 💕 xxxx
Nina Ribena Elizabeth has said almost word for word what I was going to say. I would add that if you have tube paints, you may want to buy a tin with empty half pans into which you can squeeze some paint from the tubes. It is often easier to control.
You are a whizz a taking simple shaped flowers and turning them into beautiful and unique work of art. The doodling is so imaginative. Like many others I like the iced spruce background but it was good too with the smaller border. I love those make up brushes for blending like you did. So much easier on the hands.
Good morning nina, like the fact you say, this is not a tutorial, you take us along your learning to work with watercolours. Watercolours are harder to control i find, they just sometimes go their own way and you just learn to carefully watch what happens.I loved the moment you started the doodling, it made the flowers come alive, loved it..I agree that the border was a bit too much,BUT it still was a very nice piece, thumbs up and this is what it all about, you take decisions (??my english) and it is there and it is what it is, no use in being hard on yourself. Have a good week nina
Thanks so much Lena. I’m glad we are doing watercolours this month as I’ve wanted to focus on them for a long time to develop my skills. Its certainly a learning curve because as you say they have a mind of their own - just like alcohol inks, but I find that interesting. I did go over board with the border. I don’t regret adding it, I just wish I hadn’t added quite as much ink. Lesson learned and as you say, it is what it is and I still like it regardless. I hope you have a wonderful week too 💕😘🥰 xxx
I love whimsical and colorful watercolor paintings like this one. I also like how this project combines the fun techniques of doodling, splattering, and white gel ink...it all works together so beautifully :) Thanks for sharing!
When you started with the Iced Spruce I was thinking ' No don't do it, leave it alone'. However I was wrong and love the finished piece it makes it look more dreamy.
Thank you so much for sharing this video, Nina. Using watercolor paints are really pushing me out of my comfort zone. I don't have a lot of experience with watercolor, so this video is definitely helping me to do that. I have tried watercolor in tubes, watercolor pencils, and watercolor crayons. I don't have a favorite as of yet, but again, with use and lots of practice, I will be well on my way to working towards becoming more seasoned in using it. Your flowers are lovely and I look forward to this weeks watercolor prompt! Thank you again! :-)
Thanks Aleithia. I think most of us in the Facebook group are in the same boat, so hopefully we’ll all have a better understanding by the end of the month 💕
This is gorgeous Nina! I love the shading on the bottom of the flowers and the doodling adds so much interest to the piece. The iced spruce actually helps the white splatter stand out more and lends it self to the grunginess of the bottom of the flowers. ♥♥♥
I am on the “love the iced spruce” team. I think it still works as white space and makes an ethereal misty effect. I also love how you doodled hearts to make the flower calyxes. Of course, if I was making this there would have to be glitter somewhere... I am really enjoying this month’s prompts.
Maybe a tad overboard on the white spruce but it is still pretty. In future, what you need to do is place your painting on your background mat before finishing, having a border around art makes a big difference to how it looks. I've done paintings before that I have not really liked, but added a mat and frame and suddenly it all works! Regarding the paints, cheap paints make it much harder to get good results in watercolour. You may like to try out the Arteza brand ones, I have their Gouache and markers and they are pretty good for the price.
Never used watercolors before, but think I could give something like these a try. Really like the vine-like doodles and like the border, as well. Thanks for practicing on video. Makes a newbie like me less nervous about trying new things.
Thanks Kimberly. I really do hope you’ll give this a try. I have wanted to experiment properly with my watercolours for so long, but in all honesty I’ve put it off for fear of failure. But I’m loving the results I’m getting and wish I’d plucked up the courage sooner! Enjoy 💕
Nina, that’s so stunning and whimsical... and the iced spruce finished it off beautifully. Everything about this is so awesome. I also really love 💖 the doodling around the flowers and stems, it’s very fine and perfectly fits in too. Thank you so much Nina your a star ⭐️ xxx Mags
That's good to hear that the Gansai paints are more pigmented for what they cost. Like you say it's amazing how they all differ and all give different looks. Lovely project, I love iced spruce, one of my favourite colour inks and I don't think it's over the top at all.
I don’t think any of this had gone overboard, it’s just so pretty. I just love the way it turned out. Anxious to get started on mine. Off to look at flowers 🌸
I love the end product....the White Spruce really brought out the white droplets in the back ground and bringing the white background further in made the while in the flower bud pop. Which to me, looks amazing. Great job :D
Not overboard at all … these may not be top of the lien watercolors, but I DO love the way this turned out with the “blotchy” flowers and the doodles. I’d call this “Fizzy Flowers” … it looks great ❤️
Thank you so much Colette, I think the chalky texture makes these flowers too. It suits the whimsical style. Love the idea of calling them Fizzy Flowers ❤️
Lovely picture, I have t seen much water colour with doodle in but it works amazing, I'll definitely take inspiration and try that. For me less border would pop the flowers more, but it's personal taste. I love watching everyone's interpretations appear on Facebook.
It’s beautiful. I wouldn’t change a thing. I enjoyed the white space, but your border definitely better. It adds depth and actually makes the flowers stand out.
Lovely flowers, I love the doodling around them. You didn't go overboard at all with the grey, it gives your painting such a special atmosphere. Beautiful Nina, thank you!
Thanks so much Mieke. When I see things on camera afterwards during the editing process, everything looks so different and that’s when I always doubt myself 💕😘🥰 xxxx
As for the paints looking patchy, better quality paints usually give a better effect. Also, different papers allow different flow of the water. It’s all trial and error. But this turned out very well. It’s a lovely piece and I think your grey border is gorgeous! Good work Nina!
Pretty flowers!! I rarely watercolor but I did start out with the Artist Loft ones & found them too chalky so I gave them to the grandkids & bought some of the Jane Davenport.
Thanks Lynn. I would like to to try painting one of these flowers with each of my watercolour sets as it would be a good way to see how they all compare. I have a set of the prima paints which I think are similar to the JD’s. I’ve collected a silly amount of watercolour palettes which I’ve hardly used so its about time I learned how to use them properly 💕
I'm in Australia and I just pulled out my watercolour set I bought a couple of months ago. I have RUclips on in the background while I was finishing another project. I looked at your video and surprise! My paints are exactly the same as yours! Ah, China...
Very pretty Nina! Thanks so much for sharing, it really helps to see someone using the watercolors who isn't an expert. I think you have done a lovely job with them. Hugs
Thanks so much Susan. I am fascinated with watercolours and have collected several palettes, but I’ve felt too intimidated to use them. This month is forcing me to learn how to use them properly 💕 xx
I really love the quirkinesses of your picture Nina, it’s a stunning composition including the border and I wish I’d done it! You were certainly not helped by those watercolours which have a very patchy coverage and make you work twice as hard to get a good finish. There is a world of difference between craft watercolours and fine art watercolours. I think you did amazingly well to get the finish you did and like I said I just love the picture it’s just so whimsical xxx
Thanks so much for your lovely comment Rita. I have several watercolour palettes that I’ve been too scared to use, so this month, whilst pushing me out of my comfort zone is really helping me learn how to use them 💕
I really love this and you showed how a few extra steps can make something look magical. I really want to try something like this. Thank you. Barb Pacific NW
I really love the way it looks with the Iced spruce. I didn't think I would, but I think it anchors the whole piece. It is lovely. I love watercolors but have been hesitant to use them. Thanks for using them this month. 💕
Thanks Sherry. I have several pallets that I’ve collected over the years and this is forcing me to learn how to use them properly and is helping to rid me of the fear I had of using them 💕
I think the shading you added with the iced spruce was perfect, it framed it beautifully. I know you said it wasn't a tutorial as you're not an expert with watercolouring, but for me that's exactly the kind of tutorial I find most useful. Seeing how you do things & learn an easier or better way is just what I need. My paints scare me, I'm terrified of making a horrible mess.
Thanks for your lovely comment Jane. I’ve made lots of mistakes this month whilst experiment with watercolours, and this weeks rooster was especially challenging, but I can honestly say that I’ve learned a lot from the mistakes and I’m enjoying the learning process 💕💕💕
Have finally got to watch your video Nina and just love these flowers. I have a very small set of unbranded watercolour paints that I get from an online supplier here in Australia. Nothing fancy about them, but perfect for the beginner, and I have had them for a long time thinking I would never use them. I have really enjoyed the last couple of challenges and am thinking that they will become a more permanent part of my art. I do prefer using the drier process without wetting the paper as the colours are a little more manageable (probably because I mess up the wet on wet....!! However, it's a process that I will keep trying.). But I too tend to still get a lot of water on the paper. I think watercolours are teaching me patience.....something I am definately lacking. Thank you for helping us to push our boundaries and for taking us out of our comfort zone - I for one am really loving it. Oh by the way, I like both backgrounds - I love the vibrancy of the watercolours that the plain white background brings out, but also love the ethereal quality of the spruce border.
Hello Sue. I’m glad you’re enjoying this months water colour challenge. I too will be making them a more permanent part of my art as I’ve thoroughly enjoyed using them despite my initial fear. I’ve learned so much this month 💕💕💕
I love this page! For someone who doesn’t know that much about watercolors you have made a great painting!! I hope that you will do more with watercolors after the new year and keep at it, partly because I think it will inspire me, a newbie also! They say your progress with watercolors happens when you spend more hours with your brush on the paper, and that real progress happens in years, so we must stay dedicated if we want to really learn! Great luck on your journey!!💕
Very pretty Nina, something like this would make a lovely birthday card. I definitely liked the addition of the iced spruce. Need to get my water colours out now and have a play. X
I think the biggest ahh-haa was when you added the pen doodling. Absolutely brought your flowers to life. I have left you a pm on FB Messenger, I couldn’t find an email to send it through. Thanks for inspiring. Patti
Thanks so much for letting me about the message Patti. Facebook had hidden it along with several others I’ve just discovered. They do this a lot if you are not ‘friends’ with the person you message. I’m so glad you were inspired by the recent ATC’s and I love the cards you made too 💕
I love the way your flowers turned out, all the doodles inside and around the flowers just added the right whimsical feel... Lovely ❤️🌼 As for the watercolours I think the quality and amount of paint you use may have made it patchy especially on dry paper. The difference in paper also adds to the way the watercolours work. But overall you did it your way and it came out beautiful, its the way we learn. 😁😘🌼❤️ So glad you had a great holiday... You look very tanned... Cool 😎😎🌼🌞🌞
Thanks So much Elaine. I really enjoyed painting this, but I need lots more practice controlling the amount of liquid, water and paint. I’ve been experiment with different types of paper and I’m amazed at the difference the paper can make. Have a fabulous week 💕🌸😘🥰 xxxx
@@NinaRibenaMixedMedia hope your next holiday is good and those lads behave themselves 😂😂 ❤️🌼 I have inktense paints not quite watercolours but I could give it a go! 🌞❤️🌼
Beautiful. I think a white over a coloured background is just taste, the white is very Japanese, but my personal taste is filled in, your iced spruce looked really good.
A lovely achievable project. Will be giving it a try. I find watercolours more relaxing to use than acrylics since you can let your palette dry then reconstitute again. X
This piece could be titled “Find Whimsy in Gray Day” because that is what it speaks to me. These sweet little happy blooms peeking out in a cloudy cold day. I do feel these are just amazing with all the doodle and scribbles! I must have a go at the scribbling! This project is perfect for it! Thanks ever so much for sharing and inspiring!!!💙💙
Beautiful page and a well presented video. Cheap watercolours are chalky as has already been mentioned therefore they don’t blend as well BUT the results suited your project. I preferred the white space and felt the Iced Spruce was to heavy but that’s just my preference and certainly doesn’t mean I’m right. Tfs 💓
Thanks so much for your lovely comment. I’ve tried painting these doodle flowers in some of my better quality paints since this video, but I don’t like the look anywhere near as much. As you say, the results suited this project 💕
I absolutely love these flowers! I love whimsy and you nailed it! I like the iced spruce background, more than the white! Nicely done. Warm regards from 🇨🇦Calgary, Alberta🇨🇦 where, sadly, it is snowing again!
This is absolutely beautiful! I am totally inspired to drag out my water colors! TFS. I am also "Team Iced Spruce". I love the illusion of misty/foggy effect.
The iced spruce gives the painting a different feeling. Not necessarily less nice, it's just more mystieke. Without the iced spruce the colours were more vibrant and it gave the painting a more springlike look. I like both. I love flowers made with watercolours but need to practise lots more, do the prompt this month is good for me.
I don’t think one can be “wrong” in artwork ideas as it is really all about preferences. I loved the crisp white background as the flowers to me popped out more. Love the border. Flowers are gorgeous.
I love these flowers with the pen work. It adds so much. Thanks -Marsha from Texas
Thanks Marsha, I’m really enjoying this months experimenting 💕
p.s. I loved the spruce background especially at the bottom because the flowers looked as if they were growing through a misty morning x
Awww, thanks Dee 💕😘🥰🌸

When you started with the Iced Spruce I was thinking ' No don't do it, leave it alone'. However I was wrong and love the finished piece it makes it look more dreamy.
Thanks so much Alison. I think adding the iced spruce was the right decision, but I wish I hadn’t added quite so much 💕😘

Love your "egg plants" ( flowers❤)... and and the colors and patterns.
This is gorgeous Nina! I love the shading on the bottom of the flowers and the doodling adds so much interest to the piece. The iced spruce actually helps the white splatter stand out more and lends it self to the grunginess of the bottom of the flowers. ♥♥♥

Theres nothing wrong in adding ur own details :)
I loved. The. Entire video.if you like your paints chalky or not.just sand a little bit.
Love the borders, adds such depth and atmosphere to it.
I love this just exactly like it is!!! The Iced Spruce finishes it perfectly!!
Thank you so much. I must frame it as it’s one of my favourite pieces 💕
I very much love the iced spruce and the whole piece actually. Beautiful.
Thanks so much Sherry, glad you like it 💕
I really love these flowers. Absolutely gorgeous and I love the border, it makes the flowers pop and look alive. Stunning! x

I just re watched this, and it is so lovely, I think it is my favourite of all the things u have done
Love this! The border made all the difference.
This is lovely Nina. Your doodles and iced spruced adds so much depth and interest to the piece. I love this. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Lori. I get so carried away sometimes, its difficult to know when to stop 💕😘🥰

That's good to hear that the Gansai paints are more pigmented for what they cost. Like you say it's amazing how they all differ and all give different looks.
Lovely project, I love iced spruce, one of my favourite colour inks and I don't think it's over the top at all.
Thanks so much Angie. I’ve been experimenting with different types of paper too, and that also makes a massive difference 💕
I don’t think any of this had gone overboard, it’s just so pretty. I just love the way it turned out. Anxious to get started on mine. Off to look at flowers 🌸

Lovely flowers Nina, I hope you are enjoying your holiday.
Thanks Debbie, I am thank you 💕 xx
I love the depth the Iced Spruce gave the picture, the doodling is fun and quirky! Beautiful piece xxx💕
Thanks so much Susie 💕 xxx
I absolutely love this! To me it looks like Easter eggs on stems. Like I could just run out and pick fresh Easter eggs!
Oh yes it does doesn’t it 😆💕
These are lovely little flowers with a very attractive background. They would make a great greeting card too! Thank you!
Thanks Edna. Yes they’d look very pretty as greetings cards or even bookmarks 💕🌸

Splendide. J'adore.. Merci pour tout.. Bisous. Yo 🌸
Merci beaucoup Yolande ❤️
Love your quirky and whimsical flowers. Thanks for sharing and Inspiring. Have a beautiful day!
Thanks so much Laura 💕🌸💕
I love this page! For someone who doesn’t know that much about watercolors you have made a great painting!! I hope that you will do more with watercolors after the new year and keep at it, partly because I think it will inspire me, a newbie also! They say your progress with watercolors happens when you spend more hours with your brush on the paper, and that real progress happens in years, so we must stay dedicated if we want to really learn! Great luck on your journey!!💕
Thanks so much for your lovely comment Donna. You are absolutely right and I do plan on using watercolours much more next year 💕💕💕
Very pretty Nina, something like this would make a lovely birthday card. I definitely liked the addition of the iced spruce. Need to get my water colours out now and have a play. X
Thanks Marie. Happy creating 💕
Beautiful Nina .. both plain white and spruce are gorgeous in my opinion. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts as you work . Kay x
Thanks Kay. I’m so glad we’re doing watercolours this month as its really fascinating to play with 💕 xx
The iced spruce really enhances the finished result. Your flowers and doodles are lovely. Thanks for sharing
Thanks so much Dorothy 💕
I like how it turned out.👏
Thanks Lesly 🌸
This is so pretty. Love it
Thank you 💕
I think the biggest ahh-haa was when you added the pen doodling.
I’m so glad you were inspired by the recent ATC’s and I love the cards you made too 💕
Absolutely I love what you did and that's what caught my eye! I love it!!!!!!
Thanks so much Desiree. I’m glad you like it 💕🌸💕
I love the way your flowers turned out, all the doodles inside and around the flowers just added the right whimsical feel... Lovely ❤️🌼
As for the watercolours I think the quality and amount of paint you use may have made it patchy especially on dry paper. The difference in paper also adds to the way the watercolours work. But overall you did it your way and it came out beautiful, its the way we learn. 😁😘🌼❤️
So glad you had a great holiday...
I love this just the way it is!!! Good job!
Thank you so much 💕
Well I absolutely adore everything you did! Absolutely beautiful!! Thank you for sharing, you are very creative and talented.
Thank you so much Robin 💕
Beautiful. I think a white over a coloured background is just taste, the white is very Japanese, but my personal taste is filled in, your iced spruce looked really good.
Thanks so much for your comment. ❤️
A lovely achievable project. Will be giving it a try. I find watercolours more relaxing to use than acrylics since you can let your palette dry then reconstitute again. X
I am really enjoying practicing this month with watercolours and as you say they are very relaxing. I hope you’ll enjoy giving this a try 💕
Very lovely. Thank you for sharing your process.
Thanks Sandra, glad you enjoyed it 💕🌸
I love the spruce border! Perfect to me!
Thanks Debbie 💕
Very pretty! Thanks for the review.
Thanks Corinne, it did turn into a bit of a review I guess 💕
This piece could be titled “Find Whimsy in Gray Day” because that is what it speaks to me. These sweet little happy blooms peeking out in a cloudy cold day. I do feel these are just amazing with all the doodle and scribbles! I must have a go at the scribbling! This project is perfect for it! Thanks ever so much for sharing and inspiring!!!💙💙
Thanks Leslie, I like your description of this piece. You must try your hand at scribble doodling. Its so much fun 💕
Love the background
Thanks Judy 💕
I absolutely love these flowers! I love whimsy and you nailed it! I like the iced spruce background, more than the white! Nicely done. Warm regards from 🇨🇦Calgary, Alberta🇨🇦 where, sadly, it is snowing again!
Thanks Joey. I hope Spring will be with you soon 🤞💕
@@NinaRibenaMixedMedia thank you. We do also😊😀😊
I love the background. I think it makes all the other colours pop. Beautiful, as usual. Thanks for sharing.
I’m glad you like it. Thanks so much Sandy 💕🌸
The iced spruce is perfect.
Thanks so much Katie. Its funny how we doubt ourselves 💕
This is absolutely beautiful! I am totally inspired to drag out my water colors! TFS. I am also "Team Iced Spruce". I love the illusion of misty/foggy effect.
That’s lovely to hear Mary. Enjoy 💕🌸
Your flowers turned out beautiful!
Thanks so much Debbie 💕🌸
So pretty!!thank you for the inspiration!
Thanks so much Fianne. I absolutely love your flowers 💕
I love this piece! I really like your doodles and the use of iced spruce!!
Thank you 🌸
Beautiful painting, Nina x
