so sadly i will only be doing 3 commanders per video with this series from now on. i really want to do a video every week with all the requests i'm getting and it's too difficult to let the poll run for a few days, then make 5 decks, then record and edit the video. i'll probably be doing this series forever, so i'll eventually get around to everyone's request anyway.
All hail the new series! Looking forward to all the future entries
So looking forward to every video in this series! Doesn't matter how many Commanders you can get to per video :)
trying to make 5 decks every week is insane, looking forward to the next vid.
Well I really appreciate what your doing with the channel. I like you views on alot of different cards Id never use or even know about in my normal dealings with other players. I for sure have taken some of your advice to heart and hearing after your reasoning behind some of the cards you've spoken on it has changed my perspective on the game really.
Well put together boss, thanks for the hard work you’re putting on these 🍻
You have the most interesting EDH videos on RUclips
thanks man.
I think so too. This is the only one that hasn't gotten stale or started copying another's content.
I love this idea, having fun "underpowered" commanders is great because it adds a lot of flavor to the game table.
And going under the radar can often win you games :)
Also this is what I imagined when i first heard about commander, multiple possible ways to build a deck. Instead of looking for the already "solved" routes to build a commander or the same old staples over and over again.
Ikr? Every time I see an Atraxa across the table (which is very often) my eyes involuntarily roll into the back of my head
I love how you deliver the content in such a straight, no-bullshit way. Surprisingly refreshing given other people will talk about every addition they make to a deck and talk about how it's their favorite card, making it seem like they have 40 some-odd favorite cards in their deck. You do a great job at delivering alternate ways of thinking as well, such as not only exchanging your life total with Evra, but being able to take advantage of the 4 life you will have transiently with other cards. Your Phenax video was the one that got me hooked and will probably make me rebuild Phenax.
I've said this before and I'll say this again...this is my new favorite mtg youtube channel. Im super interested in this evra build.
Huge fan of how you promote keeping commander casual by including interesting cards and synergies over sheer card quality.
One of my favorite commanders that I don’t see played often is shattergang brothers. I’d love to see some jund enchantress!
I really like how you take commanders no one else would want and are able to build decks that actually sound fun and interesting. There's no a lot of other MTG content creators out there who can make this kind of appealing content.
I can only repeat what the people before me wrote and what I'm saying always: thanks for the absolute fantastic content. It is full of vivid ideas and spread so much inspiration and creativity. Thank you sooo much. Again and again.
thank you. i'm just glad people are enjoying the content.
Kels is actually a competitive commander: one of the two Dimir commanders that sees play in cEDH. She is an infinite mana outlet in the command zone because she can sacrifice herself. You just go very heavy on control until you draw a win con, or create a mana loop to sacrifice Kels repeatedly to draw your entire deck
nevinyrral strategy of board wiping over and over can allow a spell combo player to combo off and win without any stax pieces to hinder them. be sure to have a counterspell handy
Ooh Vhati il-Dal?! That’s fun to see, Abe Sargent did a deck tech on Vhati il-Dal around 2014, in his ultra budget commander series on coolstiffinc, he was the first out-there brewer I saw as a new player.
One of the best Channels out there. Love your takes and love the fact that the less popular commanders get some love.
Vhati (sadly) really struggles against +1/+1-counters-Decks or Decks that just happen to have many of those creatures, so I think you either need stuff to remove counters or prevent counters from being put on creatures (e.g. "Blightbeetle")
Would love to see "Masako the Humorless" in the next poll :D
good point. throw aether snap in there.
I'd love to see a Varina, Lich Queen deck. My girlfriend made me a fantastic proxy that features Ed the Undying from Kingdom of Loathing
Zombie tokens or zombie tribal? I can share my decklist if you want :)
I think instill energy's oracle text makes it so it can only attack as if it has haste, but the untap is still money.
indeed. very weird that they did that.
@@edhdeckbuilding 5th edition's printing gave the creature "unaffected by summoning sickness." However, every prior printing speficially only allowed the creature to attack on the same turn it was summoned; you couldn't drop Instill Energy on a newly-summoned Royal Assassin and stab a tapped creature in 4th edition, for example. I suppose that htey just went with weight of precedent for the Oracle Text, even though the most recent printing is literally "Enchanted Creature Gains Haste." Probably has to do with "color wheel" nonsense
Power Matrix is insane. Might pick up a copy for my Zurgo Bellstriker voltron.
Edit' I would love to see a list for little mono red Zurgo. Most people run the big boy multicolor version of Zurgo.
At first Vhati seemed so uninteresting, but you changed my mind on him. He's got a lot of fun tools that I wasn't expecting@
Your take on Traxos, Scourge of Kroog would be interesting.
I think he's neither underwhelming nor particularly difficult or interesting to build.
Finally someone who mentions Planar Collapse on Nevinyrral! The best wrath on the deck, also slow opponents 1 turn, since they won't put creatures into play. Hall of Heliod Generosity can help to bring it back to your hand
I'm just happy Kuon, Ogre Ascendant made it on the list :) Thanks for adding it
I really like my Nevinyrral deck. It's the type of deck I mentioned in another post/video where I would either tear them apart or not play them often. I don't play him often. When I do though I have so much fun with it!
I've recently built and played a version of the Evra deck, and its awesome. Cleared two different six man games, and was able to stomp a heavily upgrade Tiamat deck. Though, in others games it was a bit slow to cinch a victory, it never stop being fun.
For Nevin, I think inkshield is fantastic since most of the game you don’t have much to defend yourself and opponents will be swinging at you. You also need a lot of ramp, such as scholarship sponsor, and some cute cards like fade away, cauldron haze, stinging study, taumatic compass and rise of the dread marn.
For budget: mirage mirror can save itself, coveted jewel is fun, shred memory and dimir house guard are tutors…
God of victory. I wanted to build a solider tribal deck, however I had trouble making it work. Helpful video.
Every new video series you make makes me happy. Lol
Thank you so much. I've been trying to build a diao chan deck for literal years and everytime I sit down to do it it's felt like throwing myself against a brick wall. It probably doesn't help that I'm not a huge red player.
i liked the idea so much, i built my own.
Evra looks so fun, I might just have to build that myself :)
I love Nevinyrral! My deck is zombie tribal and I have more effects that reanimate zombie lords so the horde can swing out after Nev wipes the board on an opponents turn. What you did with it was awesome though.
Love your content, man. It's a breath of fresh air for me at least. I love Vahti, 13 year old me sitting at the kitchen table thinking I'm making big plays by shrinking dudes. I almost built Hapatra, to play Vhati. Still might sometime. Anytime I build a new deck I go through the Tempest set list and see what I can jam in there.
I love the evra deck ideas. I wanted to build that commander but never understood how. Thanks so much I can’t wait to start brewing this mono white deck. #monowhitevirgin
Diaochan has a lot of potential, for the simple reason that she des not require a "trade." You destroy a creature. And then an opponent of your choice destroys a creature. Make a friend at the table. You now have a commander that says "(T): Destroy the two biggest threats." Shroud / Indestructible are both good of course. Throw in Magewright's Stone or Patriar's Seal, maybe Hematite Talisman or Puppet Strings to untap her. You're leaning a little heavy into artifacts, so maybe this is the deck where you can use junk like Covetous Dragon and all those Metalcraft cards from Mirrodin Besieged. Feedback Bolt, Furnace Hellkite, etc. I dunno, maybe throw in Kumano, Master Yamabushi just to knock all these dead creatures completely out of the board. This is all expensive stuff, so naturally you want to pile in ramp, so mana rocks / rings, red rituals, things that fart out treasure tokens, and since you're already hugboxing a little, Mana Flare
Diaochan is a really cool politics/control commander!
A player in my group has it and we really have to always think about her, even more because he is a really good player.
Underwhelming, to me, means an excuse to think outside the box.
Nivenyrral is interesting, I made a Planeswalker deck with him, since him and his associated board wipes to not hit Planeswalkers.
I have not played it yet, but man, I cannot wait to some day.
Great takes on these, especially diaochan
dude this is so freaking awesome, you are really exploring the possibilities of the format, keep doing it dude, don't be like those meta players that only picks commamders that are broken.
Awesome ideas for Nev and Diaochan. I'd like to see you build Grothama (kinda a raid boss deck) or Meloku. Keep it up!
I'm not a red magic player, but I did make a Diaochan the indestructible deck a couple of weeks ago. - My win con is a
classic, get Eldrazi Conscrption on an indestructible creature.
Would love to see a Sol'kanar the Swamp King deck
Evra is litterally my favorite crewture in the game. I run as many enchant tutors and ways to get as much mana as possible in the deck. Fuck trying to win normally, its all about the near-death win!
I started building a Nevin super friends deck shortly after commander legends got going but lost the motivation to finish it, an interesting combo you could use in other dimir decks is War of the spark ashiok and the enchantment Mists of stagnation... It'll work with anything that exiles your opponents graveyards and not yours (Rest in peace would make you unhappy!) basically can turn this into a one sided lock piece as long as they can't remove it or ashiok.
I am one of those people who voted for Kels, and I have one sitting in my collection waiting to be used. I love Dimir and can never get it to work the way I like.
I was building an ayara aristocrats deck, but now I kind of want to make it a kels deck. Dimir is my favorite color combination.
I like your take on Vhati. He is a mean commander when you really dont want anyone to play creatures
i was really excited to see the nevinyrral deck, but the vhati deck looked SUPER cool! if i were to suggest a commander, a friend and i were talking about how funny/cool a Phage the Untouchable deck could be.
seeing asmira in the poll also reminded me of Hazezon Tamar 👀
One way I tried making Nev was to get a combo death loop with gravecrawler and reassembling skeleton type loops and then either cast/blink or sac/recur Nev for a huge army.
I do think that Kels is pretty decent! A lot of deck access. :)
I am enjoying your channel. This is a great series.
I'd love to see an oldie but a goodie, Sol'Kanar the Swamp King.
Another one for Vhati: Kamahl, Fist of Krosa. Note that his first ability does not say "Target land you control." :33
I love this series already. Keep it up!
Horobi, Death's Wail would be a good option for a deck tech. I've done thinking on him, but not made a deck or anything.
I was trying to think about how to protect him... you always have reanimation, of course, but Endless Whispers is pretty awesome. . . And funny. Gift of Doom is another tricky way to keep him from killing himself.
Using his ability has TONS of options, but some are kinda bad cards without him.
Tetzimoc, Bloodthirsty Blade and Hex Parasite I think are great options. You get options in lands, too, though, so don't forget about Urborg, Tower of the Magistrate, and stuff like that.
Hey, removal wins games, right? ;) haha
Instill energy has different wording on the oracle text. It can only attack as though it has haste, but you can still untap it if you wanted to use the ability again.
Great video would love to see a Dakkon Blackblade deck
Nevinyrral is one of my favorite new decks. I built him as zombie tribal that focuses on his etb to swarm my opponent and it's super fun. Gift of Immortality, Kaya's Ghostform, and Undying Evil keep him around after he boardwipes
These cards don't work. He has pro enchantments
@@jasonferguson9052 he has hexproof, not protection
What I like is Gemstone array with ashnod altar work well together
One of my so called Fail saves for Evra is "Proper Burial" that way I get the life back when Evra dies.
And I know it was't printed yet when the video was released but Nykthos Paragon must be insane with Evra o.o
I lately found a synergy I liked to add to my Evra deck which goes a bit wide in addition to her going tall: I have some */* creatures like Soul of Eternity and Beast of Burden and now I sometimes exile them with the new card: Scour the Desert. I used to have Entrapment Maneuver to Sacrifice Evra or one of the */* when she attacked and then go wide.
The Surestrike Trident is a card I totally missed. I love that card from when I started magic when my deck used to attach it to lhurgoyf.
Surestrike Trident is a good card to add to my buy list. Not sure where I want it yet but throwing power at a player is pretty good. Maybe in Kresh.
If you're running Kels as a Lab Maniac type of deck, then a nice winning combo is Nadir Kraken, Ashnod's Altar, Kels, and Skirge Familiar. When you draw a card in your draw phase, pay one generic to get the +1/+1 counter and 1/1 creature, then sacrifice the 1/1 to Ashnod's Altar, then you can discard that card that you drew to Skirge Familiar to get a black mana, then you can pay the black to draw a card off of Kels, when you draw the card, use one of the mana from the sac on Ashnod's Altar to trigger Nadir Kraken all over again. It gets a very large kraken, and gets one colorless mana per cycle.
I think something like the great henge would be cool in the vhati il-dal deck because it would allow your small creatures (like blood artist) to survive the affects like kaervek
I think a Tetzimoc deck could be interesting. I’m currently working on one myself. It could like a Phage or Haakon deck, except a bit easier to use. I’m already thinking things like Horobi, Death’s Wail, Grave Betrayal, and the like
I use Vhati in my Volrath shapestealer deck. I love not only the vorthos but Vhati makes them 1 and Volrath gives them a -1-1 counter at the start of combat.
I like Evra, one of my pet cards :P
Instill energy doesn't give haste. It's been erratad to just attacking the turn it comes into play. Concordant crossroads will work
Evra seems like such a cool Commander!
Not sure if it was mentioned below but you can activate nevinyrrals second ability in response to his first. play him and in response to his etb sac him and pay one mana to wipe the board. His etb then triggers and gets you a zombie for everything he killed
My friend has a Nev deck. He can keep exploding the board over and over and make tons of zombies 😂
I’d love to see a Sun Quan, Lord Of Wu deck. I’m very new to EDH and I really like the way you build decks and I think you could make a very interesting deck around Sun Wuan.
I built one a long time ago that was pretty nasty since most people don't like blightsteel being unblockable
Isn't Ashnod's Alter kind of like a second copy of Blood Funnel? Like blood funnel has spells cost 2 less at the cost of sac'ing a creature. Ashnod's Alter let's you sac a creature to get 2 mana.
And the 2 mana from Ashnod's Alter can be used to cast creature spells, like your commander, so you basically don't need to worry about commander tax if you're willing to sac tokens.
I think it would be a solid include for Kels
2 more token additions for Kels, Fight Fixer. Weaponcraft Enthusiast (3 creatures for 2B) and Sengir Autocrat (4 creatures for 3B. Sacrifice the Serf tokens 1st). Woe Strider gives you a recurable token maker and Sacrifice outlet
just wanted to add a correction to Instill Energy. it has been Errata'd and it doesn't actually give a creature haste, just "creature can attack as though it had haste" so, no, it's not like thousand year elixir. it's good, but limited.
Anthousa, setessan hero for an underwhelming commander deck it’s one of my favorite cards from original theros it’s always a toss up between a storm style deck or make all lands creatures and pump them big would love your help with it
Man if your taking requests I would love to see a video about Kiku, Night's Flower. I guarantee you'd figure out something way more spicey and clever than I could. Although it might end up being too similar to your Vhati list.
U can also put evra in a brion stoutarm deck. Switch ur life total with evra, then yeet it with brion. And(here's the best part) when u throw evra, bcuz brion has lifelink, u gain all that life right back.
nevinyrral is very competitive. he just does everything
Your take on Thrun the last troll, Feldon of the third path, Toshiro Umezawa, Arcum Dagsson would be interesting
I used to have a kels deck but it was mostly artifact/artifact creature sacrifice so I ended up switching it to Silas/Keskit
Gotta say Nev is pretty overwhelming even when you put him underwhelmingly.. hahaha he's awesome.
From what I've found playing Diochan is that she is very much a political control deck. Politics are super important and if you do it right, giving her protection from red, shroud, or indestructible isn't that important. Deck is extremely fun and 100% worth the build if you wanna play mono-red control.
Also, Stuffydoll + Star of Exctintion.
Toss in Rite of Replication, kicked.
I've been wanting to build Nevinyrral since I pulled the foil etched version from Commander Legends. I have a zombie tribal deck with Gisa and Geralf. I was thinking about going zombie tribal with Nevinyrral where I can reanimate the zombies, including Nevinyrral. I like your build ideas for him.
Diaochan could really benefit from Thornbite staff. Especially if it is shrouded or indestructible.
Another addition to Nevinyrral I would suggest is Magetta the lion 🦁
but maybe he could be a commander himself?
Mannichi, the Fevered Dream is a deck I would love to see built!
definitely an interesting one
28:15 if you stack this right can you make it so that the Tree's ability triggers at 0 toughness for an insta kill? If you tap it first, then tap the commander, with a -1/-1 effect on the board, when the Tree's ability resolve does the toughness = 0? Or is it invalid because it died?
You should start a Discord channel where we can help each other brew! Reddit only gets you so far and people aren't always super helpful.
I saw the Haakon deck idea and fell in love with that, and I also really liked kels, fight fixer. I started brewing today to combine them but I would like to have a smaller community of helpful individuals to bounce ideas with! :)
yeah i'm looking into it.
@@edhdeckbuilding Cool!
Varina, Lich Queen is an interesting commander.
I would like to see you doing a decktech to Yasova Dragonclaw :)
Sunbond is another amazing card for Evra, Halcyon Witness
Guilty Conscience on the stuffy doll brash taunted types of cards
Nice 11000 subs. I knew you'd make it
On the way to the 1,000k club 🏅
I'd love to see some Ulasht, the Hate Seed.
Also, you cover black sac without mentioning Viscera Seer or Gravecrawler?
dude i just did 5 deck techs. i can't mention every card.
@@edhdeckbuilding and you're appreciated. I'm not saying this negatively. And granted, Gravecrawler isn't budget.
Quite honestly the content of your videos is top knotch. It's interesting, informative, and we'll produced.
thanks
Activate Evra 100 times when you are at 40 life, then sac Children of Korlis, you gain 1800 life, seems pretty good
yes i forgot to touch on the fact that you could switch back and forth.
My problem with Kels was the disaster in jumpstart distribuition especially in Brazil, is difficult to find it buy, it's happen with all the others jumpstart commanders.
Nevinyrll goes infinite with phyrexian alter and 6 creatures. Or less creatures and some mana. You get 2 times the zombies every time you cast him.
the problem with evra from my perspective after playing with him for a couple years as my commander, is that you often die to instant dmg spells, without some really fast tricks you die to a fuck ton of stuff unfortunately
Kels fight fixer might be unpopular but in no way is she underwhelming. She is everything that an aristocrat deck wants. A sac outlet, card draw and she even protects herself(and all that in your command zone!) Maybe it's because Orzhov is the go-to color combination for an aristocrat strategy and that's why people are hesitant to try her out but Kels can easily compete with all the other aristocrat commanders
exactly what i said. and she's only an 80 cent card. can't figure out why she isn't more epopular.
Etrata the Silencer is a cool card. Can you make it work?
Hans would be one i would like to see, or from Kaldheim the troll that creates mana rocks.
did both already
@@edhdeckbuilding oh yeah, you are right somehow missed them
The issue with Kels is definitely Jumpstart. The cards basically don’t exist and the ones that people really want are stupid expensive. I haven’t ordered her because up until looking her up right now I thought she was as expensive as the other jumpstart commanders.
The "Diao" of Diaochan rhymes with "meow"
there it is
Is there a Anthousa deck tech on your channel if not. I do recommend her
there definitely is not. never even seen it before.
