Hey, one of clouds edge guards that is relatively safe if you get good at it is using his second up B (which I don’t even think you mentioned in the video) towards stage off stage from a jump, as it catches above stage with a spike hit box and also hits slightly below the ledge, then snaps him to the ledge after spiking the opponent

He's not exactly a fast faller but he ain't floaty either. Everything I just mentioned gets increased when he has Limit charged. Maybe that's why he feels slow to you, if you're really used to holding Limit playing as him back in Sm4sh? But that doesn't really make sense because Ultimate is faster overall.

It can also be mentioned that blade beam attacks most characters when they hang on the ledge. This makes it extremely hard for them to come back to the stage. It also puts them into a lot of pressure (as they need to think of a safe getup option and if they stay on the ledge, they will continue to get hit), which forces them to make bad decisions This includes limit blade beam, which can catch many opponents off guard and can kill quite early.

    • @tgtkai

Here’s something I’d like to point out that not much Cloud players use:
D-Throw has 3 combos: into turn around jab, cross slash and as mentioned, F-Tilt
Edit: these aren’t combos, there more like strings. There true on a few characters but you have to lab that for yourself. Still useful tho
Limit isn’t something we always need to burn out right away. While it is smarter to look for the kill at higher percents or to equal percents when needed, sometimes holding on to the Limit benefits us more cause we get increased Air Speed and Ground Speed as well. Doing this against someone like Shulk for example makes the MU much easier (at least in my experience). Not only that but it also helps linking combos/strings easier.
A combo I’ve gotten many kills with my opponents at around 17% is this:
D-throw > Nair > up tilt x2 > up air x2 and then Finishing touch. It’s more of a string and it Varys on character weights but it’s pretty good
Also Rain (a cloud main) made a video on ledge trapping with Cloud and it’s pretty helpful, I suggest checking it out. Hope this helps as well

I think the thing you need to practice the most is his movement. This is extremely important for landing with his aerials and for mixups. Learn to switch between short hops and full hops a lot and moving in between, above and below platforms. You’ll see a drastic improvement in your neutral and advantage game and learn to come back from disadvantage.

Some stuff that should be added as well:
-Cloud actually has pretty decent edgeguards thanks to Limit Crosslash, Just go offstage and LCS (already mentioned in the video i think).
-Clouds Dtilt cand 2 frame opponents pretty consistently, sometimes a 2 frame Dtilt can combo into up air or other aerials/specials with the right timing.
-Cloud can ledge trump and kill pretty effectuvely, ledge trump nair/bair or LCS
-Ledge trump can be DI dependent, so if the opponent DIs towards the stage, LCS can still catch them, but a more effective punish is Limit Climhazzard and it can still kill, or you could go for the swag kill and read DI and airdodge in from the opponent and use finishing touch
-I find reverse Nair to be decent oos, sure its use is limited, but if the opponent expects up b ti punish you harder, this can throw them off
-Reverse Nair is great offstage, i find it better than just run off nair because the move actually starts behind cloud.
-Also mentioned in the video: Limit blade beam can 2 frame, when the opponent is at high %, their invulnerability runs off much faster, so it can catch them by surprise and kill
-Suicide up B offstage should at least get a mention, if you´re already up a stock and at high% against the opponent, this can further extend the lead, but it is still a niche option.
Hope this can help somebody, your guide is great!

  • @renegarcia2857
    @renegarcia2857 5 лет назад +29

Some things i would like to add from my experience:
Neutral B while in the air helps momentum cancel when launched out of stage plus it gives you a very small but valuable diagonal boost towards the stage.
Jab and the front hit of down smash are both unreliable to combo into themselves and are highly punishable after the opponent escapes them, so try to use them only as a last resource and if the opponent is almost touching Cloud.
I personally find b-air a much better pressure tool than f-air, and overall his best move even beyond limits, since it also has safe on shield range but comes out quicker, it is stronger, and lands you facing away from the opponent (which saves you the time of turning around to retreat after the attack is shielded which leads to my next point)
Cloud is best played as a hit and run (but not too far away) character, he doesn't have many combos after the 30% but his range and speed allow him to try and hit the opponent then retreat to safe range if the approach failed to then try again. With precise spacing this strategy keeps constant pressure with low commitment. Prime examples of this strategy are the few videos of MKLeo's Cloud and Sparg0.

Just hit elite smash today with cloud as main. Takes a lot of work and experience to be a good cloud since he’s one of the most technical fighters in the game with his limit mechanic and swordplay. Playing a good neutral game is key while keeping his weaknesses in mind. Having good spacing is just as important for offensive and defensive purposes. I also believe since he requires more thinking, I don’t get bored of playing him.

I don't know if I fully agree here. Play cloud however you want of course but I've had great luck playing cloud off stage just as much as on if not more. If you can get good at landing Fair spike then attempting it forces opponents to respect you even if you don't always hit. Clouds greatest strength is keeping up pressure and as long as you stick to somebody decently hard you'll probably be fine. Limit isn't as great as others make it out to be and charging it isn't required, especially when you're keeping up pressure and passively charging it that way. The limit attacks are great and all but most of them aren't needed until higher percents and thats usually when you get it anyway without having to charge it. Smashes DO leave you open. However, they're so damn large and easy to hit that as long as you don't get too trigger happy they're still incredible for damage. Ftilt is amazing and should be used lots, cross slash is more for punishing players rushing in to try and pressure you. Blade beam is amazing and so is Dtilt. Nair is pretty garbage and you can usually do Nair's job better with other attacks like down smash or up special. Speaking of which, up special is incredible for out of shield and combos decently well with up air. My biggest issue here though is the mention of dash attack. Clouds dash attack is stupid good and easy to hit. Blade beam, dash attack, Fair. Easy to hit combo, spikes, and keeps up pressure really well. Don't use the finishing touch unless you either have a lead or you're confident it'll hit. Limit blade beam is most reliable for damage but if they keep rushing in to you limit cross slash could be a better choice

One thing you forgot to mention when going over Cross Slash is Cloud can use it at ledge to punish jump recoveries and aggressive aerial recoveries. It can also punish aggressive short hops. Cloud can also use it to catch opponents in the air after tossing a Blade Beam if the opponent jumps over it as a zoning/trapping method. Short hop Cross Slash in some match ups also can punish full hops. Take note that some of these options will/may require retreating to pull off safely. Especially if the opponent plays aggressive rushdown characters like Fox, Roy, or Captain Falcon.
TLDR: Cross Slash can be used as an anti-air in multiple ways.

One thing I’ve done as Cloud for ledgetrapping is using his range to advantage. There’s a perfect spot where it seems like an attack from the ledge will hit Cloud, but doesn’t. I’ll F smash from there and thanks to his range hit it and usually get a kill.

8:15 Blade-beam is definetly not good to spam against incineroar. He can down b the move with revenge and increase the damage and knockback of his next attack. 3 bladebeams later he's gonna deal 75% with one move. Don't spam that against incineroar

@@JokerStairsI only said this because in the video he said to fire away and use bladebeam as much as you want. And he specifically said it's great against incineroar which is completely false. I think blade beam is a great projectile for edge guarding and countering projectile spam but it's not a great neutral tool

    • @rinktheredlink9317

      Exactly

    • @broom2839
      @broom2839 5 лет назад +2

Revenge doesn't actually prevent projectile spam. If it did, Incineroar would be a much better character. He's too slow to use revenge well against most characters. Some characters can outright punish him for countering a projectile like Samus. Firing it away is a great idea because it forces him into using revenge which ends up getting baited.

Hey! Did you know that if you use the first hit of Cloud's Side B while the opponent misses the tech on a higher platform, that small tip on the very top of the move can jab lock the opponent? This only works at a lower percent, but it's doable if you're on a Battlefield stage.
Edit: So I tried that trick again, and it's a very small window, but if you can land the very top of the move without hitting the opponent with the full first hit, this can jab lock, or at least do an animation similar to a jab lock.
Unless someone else discovered this, then I'll just leave this here.

an option i found to be particularly effective is setting up a frame trap in the air using blade beam, then dealing with whatever they do, be it clank, get hit, or airdodge, if it misses i dont follow up, and if im in shield against another person, i good option if they shield is to drift back nair to cross them up and follow up with a grab or make a read, i am a very agressive cloud and these have won me neutral countless times

A good tip for countering Shulk as Cloud, is to catch them early animation in backslash w cross-slash, they'll be wide open and unable to defend during that half second in the animation where Shulk is bringing the monado forward.

  • @michaelmassari39

It's good to point out that blade beam, limit blade beam, and even d-tilt (MU dependent) can catch people off ledge. In d-tilts case, it can string into Fair spike or kill at higher percent.

  • @cmrobbins88

I’ve never been a technical fighter when it came to Smash. I have a hard time utilizing tilts and shields mostly because I can never time it.
As I am co-maining Cloud, this is very helpful. I did find it early on that he’s better in the center. He’s like a Little Mac that can jump. But I never thought chasing would be such a bad deal but it’s so obvious now that I think about it. I’m gonna practice fighting closer to the ledges and not be so hasty to rely on the forward Smash. Makes sense that he’s better with platforms than omega stages and FD.

Back throw is the best doubles throw, and is one of his tools that makes him, imo the best doubles partner for PT or grab cat. Always sends at a low angle across the stage, perfect for free a upsmash at anytime.
Grab cat's side b is a free kill move if you stand behind them when they use it. Having the opponent bounce off grab cat gives you a FREE punish for anything and doesn't consume revenge.

I have one tip for cloud mains. Try and get your limit bar at the best times. You are free to edgeguard with your limit bar, so shoot for the stars with forward air spikes. Cloud is really hard to read in the air with limit, so try staying airborne to trip out your opponents by constantly jumping.

I found this pretty enlightening as a Cloud Main; I never really utalized his F Tilt, nor did I think of using the C Stick for Tilt Attacks (I reserved that for the Smash Attacks). For kills I would rely on reading rolls or recoveries to nail a f smash. Though I know as well as anyone Cloud's recover is lackluster, I always find myself chasing unsuspecting players deep off stage; weather it be back airing into the stage or f airing then to the shadow realm 😂. Regardless, thank you for the Video; it helped me get a lot better with him!

finally someone who says it ...
As a main Cloud I've always wondered if it was just me (noob af) the only one who struggled without platforms. Holy cows ... Without those, almost every matchup becomes 100 times harder. I guess that's because Cloud's got pretty good aerial attacks, speed and movements overall. Without platforms he can't abuse that, and IMHO he becomes significantly weaker.
Anyway, good job with the guide; very useful (even if I disagree with a couple of things u said)!
