This is pure horror gold, it's such a simple scene and yet the practical affects, the make up, the acting, make this an iconic scene from one of the best horror films ever. Where the real monsters were the humans. The Cenobites were just a force of nature, a consequence of delving too deep into forbidden pleasures. Neither good nor evil, just an end result.
Apparently for this scene Clive Barker kept telling Doug Bradly to do less. Less body movements, less facial expressions. What we get is a perfectly alien being, something beyond our notion of reality. A creature that is ramrod still, emoting only with his voice, features only moving in the most extreme circumstances. Pure genius directing and perfectly done by the actor.

I've always preferred this interpretation too, that they truly are explorers of experience first and foremost. The core of the horror isn't that they're blatant demons... it's that _they are angels to others._ It's there again in with the "we have such sights to show you" line. Then the smell is so overbearing his nose almost burns from the aroma strength. That's the nature of the cenobites. Their perception is that at its peak pleasure and pain are the exact same thing. It's sensory overload. They apply this reasoning to taste , touch , sight , and hearing. Haven't you noticed many of their victims both look like they are having the worst torture done to them imaginable ... yet they also look like they are about to orgasm. "Kirsty, Kirsty, Kirsty, so *eager* to play....so reluctant to admit it." Remember, it is desire that calls them. Kirsty is the best final girl because she IS into this kind of thing and lives only because Pinhead is amused by her self-deception, knowing she will one day join him. He is looking at his successor, his heiress, his love, his hate, his most beloved enemy, and his most clever ally: the next High Priestess of Hell. He can see that potential in her, the monster hidden behind those big doe eyes and that sweetly innocent face. Inside her is a darkness that is just itching to come out and play. She is the protagonist and he is the antagonist, but she is not the hero and he is not the villain, not in this story.

I actually have a theory about the Lament Congfiguration (The Puzzle Box.)
(Keep in mind I have only seen the first three movies and have never read the comics, so please don't judge too harshly)
Many people think that the best way to avoid the Cenobites is to simply not solve the Box and then it's a done deal, but I dont think it's that easy.
Honestly I think that the Box itself has a sort of sentience, not unlike the Ring from Lord of the Rings. Only the difference here is that the Box is not seeking to return anywhere, but instead seeks to compel those who hold it in their possession to solve it unknowingly.
Whether they actually intend to solve the Box, such as the antagonist of the first movie, or accidentally solve it shortly after finding it in their grasp, the first thing that anyone does when the Box is in their hands is rub their thumb in a circle counter clockwise on the circular emblem that we can safely assume is the top of the Box. This is also the final motion of solving it.
Edit: I realized shortly after typing this that Frank does NOT do this immediately, perhaps because he had every intention of solving the Box on his own despite knowing what it could contain, the Box itself saw no reason to compel him?
There is NO reason for this motion, but they ALL do it and it seems to trigger something in their subconscious that pushes the individual to begin solving the puzzle. With its own automatic movements, solving the puzzle is actually pretty simple as it will mostly to the job on its own, with only a few nudges from the victim that has been caught in its trap. And that is exactly what the Lament Configuration is, more than a gateway to the Leviathan's domain and more than a simple puzzle, it is a Trap for all those unfortunate enough to stumble across it. What good is a trap that is difficult to deploy? That would be like creating a landmine that requires the soldier who steps on it to also sing a perfect rendition of "I Will Be There" from the musical production of the Count of Monte Cristo before it would go off.
Again, this is all just theory and for all I know it may have already been written/spoken now.

"Do not debate with me girl, just come here and die while you still have the option of doing it quickly"
"Welcome to the worst nightmare of all, reality"
"You'll burn in hell for this.

"We'll tear your soul apart!!" . That line had me like geez, that's some evil stuff right there when I first heard it. Also, "Your suffering will be legendary, even in hell!". I thought that one was savage too.

The cenobites (1) ensure their people are informed and and their questions are answered, (2) have clearly communicated standards for recruitment, and (3) subject themselves to the unpleasant part of the job first before making others go through it. All hallmarks of good leadership!

In hellraiser: hellseeker she bargains with pinhead again; four souls in exchange for hers. When he agrees, he commends her on being a "worthy adversary". She responds: : "I had a great teacher." I think it's a deleted scene though, which is a shame, because it's an awesome moment to watch!!!

But also introduced the terrifying idea that he's actually a young boy. What kind of messed up life had that kid had to be in possession of the Lament configuration early in life? I always felt that added an extra layer of gruesomemess that this entire time, the Chatterer was just a little boy.

    • @nalrashido
      @nalrashido 2 года назад +1

@@walsh9080 You learn later in other medias that Chatterer in life was a homosexual teenager who framed his mother for the murder of his abusive father. He became an orphan and later a prostitute. His backstory is extremely depressing, yeah but as you read you learn he did all of this to himself.

I think what makes the cenobites the most terrifying is unlike with other invincible horror movie monsters where there’s some way to hurt and stall them, even if you do somehow hurt them they’d enjoy it and it would mean absolutely nothing trying to resist. You cant reason with them (in normal circumstances) you can kill them and you cant even really slow them down you’re just at their mercy, the only real way to fight them is to already be a cenobite so.. yea.
