Just played my first game of SS13 today. It was amazing, i was stuck in the clown's room for 10 minutes. Then i threw away all of my Identification and became a Plague doctor once i got out of the room. I then proceeded to engineering and tried to "hack" multiple doors to no avail. Someone got tired of my shit and got a robot to cut my head off then ate my brain.

I'm curious, have you guys had any repercussions from the tube tide? I heard about the game a few weeks back on a live stream and it looked like a lot of fun. Looks like an amazing role play game. I could see that a lot of thought and creativity went into the game. And looks very complex. I can imagine you have had a lot of players come and go who thought it would be a easy, exciting ride. To me it looks like a fun slow grind, learning to master the game play. I would love to play, but I don't have a lot of free time....if that changes, I'll probably jump on board. I prefer this kind of game play to a lot of the modern games that are out there. I've enjoyed watching a couple of your videos, you do a great job of showing how the job systems work...at least as far as I know. Thanks for the content, spaceman.
Thank you for asking: Here's the sad truth of it.
1. Streaming on most ss13 stations is more or less a bad thing. it's metagaming and ruins rounds for everyone else. Either people who watch the stream will join to fuck with the streamer (metagaming), to help the streamer (metagaming) or the streamer will reveal information that can be used by others, metagaming. The people who do this generally play on private servers, where they're the admin/etc so . . well. That's a complex issue. Imagine if you ran WWF and also wrestled in it, and called yourself a professional wrestler. Kind of a weird thing having the power over others but I guess you get my point.
2. The tuber tide repercussions are very real. Again, lets bust out that imagination. Imagine you have a local diner you like, makes breakfast the way you like, NEVER packed, always a good place to go to spend your time. Makes your day just to go there once. Then it gets on some big frosted-tips TV channel where a guy talks too loud and jams food in his mouth. You go back to your favorite little restaurant but now, well, now its full of hipsters. Line out the door.
So you come back a week later, thinking maybe it'll have wound down.
Still, full of hipsters. People taking instagram shots of their food. The menu has changed to suit the clientele and what was once a great little breakfast place for waffles is now an avocado-toast juice bar that sells vape accessories.
The people who came, by and large, were not great. As with most tides you end up with people who try what they've seen, which is grief. However, since they have no skills yet they more or less run around shouting racial epithets and smashing/stealing anything they can find. Not really great fun. However, some people have learned, and I've taken the time to tutor a few. Some stations like goon have been teaching people, mentors volunteering to teach complex systems. That's been good. New blood is always needed in ss13, but at the cost of a huge tide, it's bad.
3. It's traditionally 'spessmen', but spaceman works as well. I've been playing this almost a decade now and there's some who've been playing longer than I. If you're interested in the history of the game, check out the interview playlists, I actually tracked down the creator of the game and interviewed him.
4. Don't be afraid. Jump in. have fun.
On goon , you can change jumpsuit by clicking new jumpsuit you holding in hand on button labeled 'inv' in the bottom left corner of interface. No need to remove previous one and drop all items on the ground in the process.

I also finally tried SS13 after watching a ton of your stuf f(just moreso to get a tone feel) and my first experience on goon #2 was being tossed into the trash network and barely avoiding the crusher.
So. You know. The perfect introduction.

I like seeing the surplus of goon videos. It makes me debate if i should get on goon...it honestly seems of much higher spaceman quality than TG. TG is good for that simple sweet chaos though i'd assume.

Can you suggest a beginner server to play and learn on - I've been trying to play on Beestation that claims its for beginner players but it's been 90% of the time veteran players that played this from 2013 griefing newer players so hard that we can't even learn the game - its been great having random wizards walk up to you and ruin your entire round - or having a juggernaut sit in spawn and kill you - I need a server that is actually just out there for beginner players and not meant for trolls to spam the N word in chat all day
Goon is a good choice. Goon1 tends to be low-pop, good for figuring stuff out, plus there's mentorhelp available. That and we don't tolerate racist bullshit.
Beestation bad.
Play Goon. Goon has mentors.
Fairly new player here. Goon people are generally helpful if you have questions. Don't be shy about asking for mentor help whenever you feel stuck. The wiki is also good for getting started with the basics. I pretty much only play on the various goonstation servers.
I don't touch Bee because it's just horrible, honestly.
I recommend you start with Goon, they're good people and even if it's wacky, it's a really good place to start.
Once you get more experienced, I recommend branching out to other stations, that way you can get a feel for what you like.
TG is the popular one a lot of people flock to, but the people there can be pretty meh overall.
If you are more into the RP side of 2d Spessman, I recommend Aurora or Bay. Bay for more of a military feel, Aurora for good old SS13 corporate wackiness.
Colonial Marines is good if you want what is basically a TDM with mehrines and benoshoes.
And if you happen to be on while Corporate Mercenaries is on, you have to give it a try. It's so stupid. It's so, so stupid, but it's fun.
I've managed to have a good time on Beestation as a Chef and a miner-which was great for learning the controls and movement-but I understand where you're coming from. I think medbay gets blown up a good 30-40% of the time and SEC never knows what its doing, leading to everyone just dying really fast while assistants run amok punching each other. Very funny to watch from the safety of the kitchen, but it's all really annoying to try to learn with otherwise.

@@theblackpantslegion still better than me, Citadel Station's lighting is so shitty that there is no way to see where I'm going. This gives a major advantage to the clock cult to abduct me and brainwash me. It is made worse by the large amount of maps in rotation, so I never know how to get to cargo. For fucks sake, either the cultists flash bomb or a changeling eats me before I can make some friends by donating my pimping ride to Cargonia!
If you are going to ask why don't I just play on a different server. Citadel station is the only one that will let me be a Warner Bros cartoon character... And my survival times on it are actually longer than on one server that is plagued by the stupid space carp and makes me regret trying to pray for anything.

Primarily I am just wondering if they have similar jobs (my favs being shaft miner, and scientist (xenobiologist specifically))
