- I picked this specialized hard rock up for $ 375 including the bars to hopefully replace my stolen ebike with a gravel bike. This is my video of the conversion. All the parts were either spare parts, sourced from Amazon, or bought from a local bike shop.

The Orange Baron
I did a build like this not so long back, using as many parts I had at home and spending as little as possible! Total build cost me about £30 or $42 super stoked with that!! 👍
Sweet! Budget projects are the best!
I've had that same model since 2014. I was going to get a new bike, but the covid shortage put that on hold. So, I have been upgrading. The frame is solid.
Awesome, I have always wanted to do a frame build!
i also have the same model and still using it today
I wish I could do this sort of thing myself. I can barely put the rear tire back on, let alone convert my MTB to gravel! These skills u have are valuable
Practice makes “close to perfect”😅
Good job. We all gotta beat the industry trends. Save MTB and convert it to gravel 👍🏻🤜🏼🤛🏼
Yeah, reduce reuse recycle
Its not gravel bike
@@ezcu1733 you might say not a gravel, still it is campable of what real gravel bike can do. And beside the idea of a gravel bike came from combined mountain bike and a road bike thats the idea, Its all just marketing dude...
@@ezcu1733 correct, it is better👍
@@joneugenio2017 fully agree, besides: a (preferably cromo☝️😉) MTB frame can do more: enhanced tire clearance, stability, off- road geometry etc. Don't believe every stuff of the Gravel hype...

You prolly dont give a shit but does anyone know a way to get back into an instagram account..?
I was dumb lost my password. I would love any assistance you can give me!
@Kingston Jensen Instablaster =)
@Ezra Gavin Thanks so much for your reply. I found the site through google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff atm.
I see it takes quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
Pro(ish) tip; on mechanical disc brakes, cut the brake cable with less than an inch of extra length so that it CAN"T bend right and then get caught inside the holes or slots in the rotor. I know because someone at the shop I used to work at left about three inches of extra cable. The kid who bought it apparently went over the bars multiple times in one day of riding. Needless to say we were incredibly relieved he didn't break his nose or worse.
If this doesn't make sense imagine you have a brake rotor and stuck a small object into one of the holes in it as you're riding. The rotor will continue to rotate before violently stopping as that object tries to pass through the caliper.
Thanks for the tip. If the bent excess of the cable goes into the disc, that would not be good. I will keep your tip in mind! Thanks for watching!
I did this befor gravebikes were invented because I was always used to my roadbike handlebars. Jus had to experiment with the stem-lenght but It worked out really well. Viele Grüße
Awesome! This is a great option if you are on a budget.
Wo hast du die stis her?

i also have a hardrock sport frame and it is very solid frame.. i installed shimano deore groupset and brake set, rockshox fork, change the wheelset, change the handle bar to a straight bar. the performance is awesome!
Sounds like a fun setup, enjoy!
I am doing this very thing later this week. Thank you for this video. SO helpful.
Awesome!
That's one sweet build.
Mine is a budget road bike, I converted it into a gravel bike. Replacing the 29 inch wheelset to 27.5 and putting sleek tires on it.
mine is 27.5 mtb and i want to convert it in gravel
@@ravi1544 I have seen some people doing that here. Turning their MTB to a gravel/monstercross bike. I've seen one irl and it looks good as well.
Some even turning their MTB into a tri-bike/TT bike
Nice. "26 still rocking. Same over here. I need to get rit of my tapered bb and replace it with that hollow tech myself
Yeah, it’s not too noticeable compared to the square taper but some weight is saved and of course the 104bcd crankset for the 1x chaining is compatible.
This bike is actually a 29” but I’m sure a 26” would be just as fun!
@@theorangebaron1595 the bcd is measured the distance between the crank bolts right?
@@theorangebaron1595 my bad I thought I say 26 on the tires
@@aldrinclementina4297 Yes, the distance between two opposite bolt holes. I would not blame you for the tires, most gravel conversions do have 26”.
Gotta get those bikes keep up trend and functionality either Conversion and restoration.
Yeah my bike video was very successful but I am very busy as a student, and my interests constantly shift.
Thanks!
i did a similar build, gravel bars with 25mm rise tektro brake levers. kept 2x10 deore drive chain added microshift bar end shifters (mtb type). on my norco charger. great fun to ride.
Good looking build. 😎👍 I have a 2012 Rockhopper 29er that I painted black, put a Surly Karate Monkey fork and some Maxxis Ardent Skin walls. Next are drop bars and a new group set. Been wanting to do this for some time but I already have a road bike and just got a new hardtail 29er. Your video just made up my mind. Again...Awesome build!!!!
Thank you! Have fun building and riding!
Daaaaamn! This was so cool!I was planning to do the same🤩mtb to gravel bike
Awesome!
Awsome video mate! I did the same thing. Got a old Fuji Miracle frame. Used som old parts and bought Shimano Sora shifter. The bike is amazing! So fun to ride! Thanks again for an awsome video.
Thanks! Sounds like your build was a blast! It’s awesome to see other people having the same success!
@@theorangebaron1595 Yes! If you love riding a bike, any shape or form and enjoy fixing them, its the ultimat challange. The satisfaction when you realize how well it works. Hard to describe.
Did the same with my hard rock but converted it to a 29er single speed monster gravel. Gave it a copper s-works paint job too
Sounds awesome... I'd live to see that!
nice inner tube trick, will try
Thanks!
Please post more bike related videos. This is awesome! 👍
Thanks for the support, I noticed that bike videos are vastly more popular than my Rc planes, boats and cars. But these videos take time to make, and as a student, I am just getting time to make more videos, I will try to do another bike video!
Enlightening 👍, good idea for my MTB bike to be gravel 🙏 thanks for the video 🙏
Glad it was helpful!
I have converted my MTB to drop bar with Gripshift. I used cheap TRP 341 break levers with bb7 road calipers. I am happy to answer questions if anybody is interested. With rigid fork though.

Stellar job, it look kickass.
Thank you so much!
Nice build !!
Much appreciated!
A shorter stem is always needed for MTB to road bike conversion
I always remembered that road bikes have longer stems and mtbs shorter one. Reguardless It’s all up to preferably and how your bike fits you wether it be a long or short stem.
Thanks for watching!
Clever guy.
Always doing things by the book. It looks great also.
But just do not lube cables, do not believe what others say regarding cable lubing.
That is not a motorcycle clutch cable that it needs to be lubed.
Regardless great work.
Thanks! But I learned from Park Tool that the lube does not lubricate the cable housing, but is prevents moisture from entering the system. But yeah, the Teflon inner coating is meant to be used bare.
@@theorangebaron1595 yes a great source.
I started with their Big Blue Book of bicycle repair and now also follow the Dealers Manuals on si.shimano.com.
Love Sram also but cannot afford it.
Were the levers fully compatible with the disk brakes calipers??
Thanks?
Yes they were, the travels were not too long, they were designed for gravel bikes(which commonly have disc brakes) given their 1x8 setup.
Well done 👍, I have new hard tail and forks there was thinking of doing the same thing 👍
Yeah, it’s a lot of fun!
Good work 👍

Awesome build, I‘m planning to do a conversion to my MTB aswell. I‘m just worried about the incompatibility of the STIs and mtb break calipers
Would love an update on how it rides.
I'm surprised the microshift shifter works with an mtb derailleur. I just bought an 8 speed road style microshift shifter that is claimed to work with Claris which supposedly has a different cable pull. Interesting.
Yes, I researched this one and it worked with my deraliur. And the local bike shop reccomended it to.
Thanks for asking!
I have an 8 speed cassette on my hard tail and bought an 8 shifter. I just checked that the cassette had the same number of speeds in total but wasn't aware of this guess I will, find out 😂 I bought the 8x3 shimano claris
F#*Kin good vid brutha! Thanks for passing the tips.
The end result certainly looks solid but maybe you should invest in a decent cable cutter.😉
Тоже недавно переделал MTB в Грэвл! получилось круто!
What a great bike!.
I did the same convention using the same brake levers but the brakes can´t break well even after a lot of adjustments, the break lever don't pull enough cable to close the disc brakes, how did you solved that?
My brakes worked fine. Make sure you are properly pulling all of the slack out of the cables before adjusting your brakes.
why did you use additional brale shifters?
hello .. where did you buy the handlebar? ... since I need the 1x8 thanks
Привет! Нормально получилось, а вилку регидную не думаешь ставить?
Well done 👍🏻
Thanks!
Nice!!! Hopefully you can make a ride test and comments on this. Good job
I have ridden it and it is fun and fast. It is like a road bike (road bike speeds)but more capable on other terrain.

What's the advantage of drop bars over flat /riser bars. I've never found any.
Thanks for asking! With drop bars you get more hand positions for longer rides and commutes and you can get tucked easier for less resistance against wind. Preference also plays a role.
Hello. where did you buy the brake handlebar assembly?
Thinking about doing the same with my old hardtail. Can I ask where you found the bars?
Where did you source the shifters / handlebar from? Thanks.
nice bike bro.
Thanks ✌️
what difference does it make if you keep the same off-road tires?
will imitate ,reconstruct my ghost mtb 2 gravel bike thanks
i think, Using corner bars would be more budget friendly and easier to the hands coming from a flat bar.
Like a champ 👍
Looks great. I'm a big fan of those Amazon/Ali Express crank/bb bundles. Light and robust. One thing though- on the NDS, is there enough crank spindle for both crank bolts to bite down on?
Yes, the two crank bolts that clamp the toothed crank around the toothed shaft are plenty secure.
@@theorangebaron1595 Excellent. Apologies for asking, knew you'd have it covered.
No problem, I make videos to teach and inspire!
Nice. I can see that not only I did it :)
Yeah, these conversions are fun.
@@theorangebaron1595 I love such changes. These are new possibilities :)
How teeths does it have in chainring?
36t
can you say what bar exactly this one is? And is this transformation only possible with mechanic disc brakes?
I am not sure of the bars. Flared one would be ideal but they can be pricey. Hydraulic brakes are too expensive to get in a drop bar format. At this era of bikes, is most economic to use mechanical discs brakes for the drop bar levers.

I have the same bike, and just finished doing the 1 x conversion. I had to replace the rear wheel because it was bent, but I don't think the original 7 speed rear hub had room for a larger cassette. I used the same crankset as in the video. I went with microshift advent 9 speed. I try to avoid Amazon, but the local bike shops weren't really any help, and Amazon had everything I needed. I spent about $250 with tools and parts. Definitely worth it.
Hello there. and what is your frame size and height? did the landing become too long after the alterations?
It was pretty nice!
Thanks!
Super cool
I agree!
Nice work sir! Subbed 👍👍👍
Thank you so much!
@@theorangebaron1595 where are you from?
what type of shifters have u used?
Need to get that rigid for the full conversion.
Yes, I am working on sourcing an affordable rigid fork! Thanks for watching!
I’m currently planning to convert my mtb to a gravel bike so this was nice and very helpful. Btw when you replaced your cranks did you replace your chain as well? And do you need a rigid fork for a gravel bike or is it alright if i just leave my suspension forks on the bike?
Thanks for asking! The original chain should work but a new one is only like 10 dollars and it can be optimized for a 1x drivetrain. I would recommend a rigid suspension fork upgrade but they can be expensive. They do save lots of weights and increase efficiency though. The choice is up to you, I would recommend an aluminum one over a carbon one for durability and reliability. There are some ones on AliExpress for less than 100 dollars.
Thank you so much! I subbed too
Hello where did you buy this handlebars? Tks
From a local community run used bike shop. Look around in your area, or online for similar bars locally, prices are much better if you buy used or local typically!
me i ask you? bro i was planning to do it my rd is 9 speed so ima gonna change my crank into 2x crank and my fd are going to change but my rd is it okay?if i have 9 speed rd and im going tou use a drop bar like yours it still going to work? when you shift it?
My setup was an 8 speed in the rear but as long as you get a 2x9 lever set that is compatible, you should be fine.
What size chainring did you use?
Any plan to put rigid forks on it?
Yes, but I am still saving up and searching for a reliable solution for a budget.
@@theorangebaron1595 Try Toseek Carbon Rigid fork
Im planning to this on my 26er mtb idk if how much will it cost and if it is worth it. Can u help me or suggest any ideas for this. Thanks
I spent about 100 dollars in upgrades. Thanks for watching!
@@theorangebaron1595 thank u🥺
Where do u get a deal like that for the whole bar and levers
Check you local bike shop for old parts but I got these from a local community bike oraganization, they fix up bikes and sell used parts for great deals.
Where can I get your drop bar?
Congratulations on the build! May I ask what is the cable cutter you use at 4:35 ? Thank you!
They came with my 3d printer but you can buy them cheap under the name "precision flush cutter"
@@theorangebaron1595 Very good! Thank you!
Nice conversion! Im planning to do the same thing with my old mtb. Would you have information on the drop bar and shifters you used?
They are microshift 8 speed levers and the bars are from a GIANT brand road bike, I am not sure on the flare and drop specs but it is the narrowest adult size drop bar, with that said I would recommend much wider bars for a gravel bike!
Just came across this today. Looks nice. Would you be able to give the actual model of the drop bars? I’m sure they’re not $75 anymore lol but I don’t care. I want them! :)
Unfortunately, I don’t think they are sold separately from the giant road bikes. I feel you, bars and levers can get pricy.
Do you have a link for the bars by any chance?
No I don’t but I think they were off of a giant gravel bike. I would recommend getting wider bars as these were a tad narrower than I wanted
Is Sti lever shifter compatible to mtb rd?
The shifter is compatible with the rear mtv deraliur
what brand of tires do u use and what size?
Muito bom trabalho 👏🏻 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
this build is great! when watching the build i noticed you put two spacers on the drive side, is the chainline good doing that? hope its bringing you joy and keep at it this is really awesome.
Yes, you have to measure the bottom bracket shell width to determine the spacer placement to get an optimal chain line. Thanks for watching!
Sometimes no spacers are needed. It all depends on the frame.
@@jameslefleur1970 I'm having problems with my chainline even using just one spacer, is It really ok to use no spacers? Like just metal to metal contact?
@@pedrodurrandon9969 Spacers are needed only to correct the chain line or if the cranks are touching the frame. Sometimes no spacers are needed. I actually don't have any in one of my bikes.
@@jameslefleur1970 Mine is a 26' so the frame is a bit older, even came with 2 of the spacers in the crankset side, so i guess I'll try to remove the one I left there

More like a monster cross bike eh?
Yes, you could call it that. Thanks for watching!
Hey bro I think my bike and your bike are the same I have that : paint , size , forks and the same brand
Awesome, I think that it is a specialized rockhopper size medium. I’m not sure of the year though. Pretty cool!
Can you please put the handler bar link please
I did not buy it online so I cannot provide a link, I would reccomend looking for used bars or go to a local bike shop to see if they have any old bars
@@theorangebaron1595 thanks for telling me but i have i question how long is that handle?
Where did you buy the micro shift ,handle
They were purchased from my local bike shop, but you can search for a micro shift 1x8 levers online!
Having the brakes not on the shifters just made me fear this thing so much
Nothing to worry about! The brakes are also in the shift levers. The extra brake levers are there for more upright riding. Both the extra and normal brake levers are perfectly functional!
It is a cross lever, knownly used for CX bikes
Is this increase the speed?
I struggle to understand how the new version is brtter compared to the previous 3x system which gave you way more gear range and was marginaly heavier.
I don’t need the resolution of gears that a 3x offers and the bottom bracket needed to be replaced and this was a great opportunity to make it 1x.
The best part is that you can do what you want with your bike!
you do not change tire right ? still 26 inch tire ? may be change 700C35 wheel is better i guess.
They are 29in or 700cc wheels and tires right now, I still need to save up for gravel tires.
Is it okay to use 2x or 3x chainring when converting to gravel bike or should it really be 1x
Assuming you want fast road speed and an easy climbing gear you're going to need either a large, wide range cassette at the back (and derailleur / shifter combo that can cope with that), OR a 2x setup.... 46/30 or a little smaller would be ideal.
Nice one I also convert mine into gravel, we're a bit similar but the main difference was my views were so low compare to your gigantic audience 😂💯🦋
Yeah, this one blew up for some reason. I’m not sure why!
Thanks for watching!
Hola puedes decirme qué número de frame es 26 or 29 gracias
If you are wondering what size bike wheels, then it is 29 inch!
Translated: Si te preguntas qué tamaño de las ruedas de la bicicleta,
if you are converting a mountain bike to a gravel bike why change the gears why not leave them and only change the tires and the handle bar ?
Thanks for asking! To start, it is cheaper for 1x levers rather than levers for both sides. Less moving parts is less maintenance and if chosen properly I have all the gearing I need for road and off-road. I also wanted to experiment with a 1x as I have never ridden one before and so far it is awesome!
I have another set of tires for more road/commuting but I like the knobbies for now.
@@theorangebaron1595 how's the 1x drive train up steep hills and what size is the 1x cassete compared to the precious 3x cassete? Cheers
@@thomasdemalmanche1159 from what I saw the 1x used here is 36T, combined with what looks like a 11-34T rear cassette it should be alright for pretty steep climbs, although somewhat limited for topspeed on the road (downhill). Certainly a good compromise but not as versatile as the 3x front derailler (42-34-24) from what I've found for the 2014 Specialized Hardrock Disk 29
