      Compared to the RC-F, the Q60 Redsport is quicker to 60, similar 1/4- mile but slower trap speed. It would be very close with the Q60 getting the jump off the line, then the RC-F closing the gap to the finish line to a neck and neck finish.

      @TheBreakfastLover Accurate I'd presume. Those should be similar results Q50 vs IS500. The RCF is heavy as well but I'd expect the Q60 to have a slight edge. Low speed roll race the 7AT is gonna ensure a Q loss.

    • @TheBreakfastLover
      @TheBreakfastLover 10 месяцев назад +7

      @@jimwallace4164 it's an obvious match-up that strangely has never come to fruition. The LC500 is a bit slower than the RC-F (1/4-mile 12.7 @113mph RC-F, vs 13.0 @112mph LC500), so if the LC500 can beat the Q60 Redsport, then it's reasonable to conclude the RC-F is the top Japanese performance coupe (BMW Supra excluded). For reference sake the Q60 Redsport 1/4-mile 12.8 @111mph, so I think the Infiniti should have this in the bag vs the LC500.

      A lot of people dont take into consideration too, the wheel weight factors, drag coefficiency, gear ratio/amount of gears as you stated, etc... having power is nice. But if youre car has variables that counter the power its putting down, its just a number that looks good on paper to justify a high price tag. Example, I had a 2004 Chevy Cavalier (2dr, 5spd, BASE model had only manual windows and locks). I put an LSJ (Cobalt SS) engine in it, upgraded the blower/everything, and was about 300whp. My friends lightly modded MazdaSpeed 3 was dead even on highway pulls, race after race. I had heavy 14" steelies i used as daily driving (and for a more sleeper look). I went home, swapped on my 17" wheels that were about 8lbs lighter per corner...and i was consistently walking him afterwards without any other modifications. Sorry for the long response, but as you stated, people forget there are other factors in how quick a car can be besides its final power output.

Everything they were putting out at the time was desirable and true to its roots. Aside from the Q50 & Q60, everything else in their current lineup stinks. And mind you, the Q50 & Q60 are actually half baked products. Their saving grace is the engine, and of course the LOOKS, but that's it! They're mediocre products when measured in other aspects. Aside from the weight, the LC500 makes about 450hp crank at most. The 472hp figure is overrated. It's also lacking a bit in torque. The Q60 is rated at 400hp crank but it actually makes around 440 - 450hp stock, and of course, much sooner in the rev range vs the V8 which has to be spun all the way to 7000 rpm to get all the good juices out of it! That's not a bad thing though, who doesn't love a good high revving V8? The results here are no different than what we saw with the IS500 against the Stinger. A good turbo V6 will almost always outrun an aspirated V8.

    I see it for many drag races that the HP numbers from Lexus for the NA 3.5 L V6 and 5 L V8 engine is very optimistic, they loose all the time to cars where have 10 - 20% less HP as the Lexus cars.

    • @elenchus
      @elenchus 10 месяцев назад

      the Lexus is super heavy, and the VR30 produces a ton of power down low when the V8 is still getting up to speed (as is the case with a lot of I6/V6 turbos/twin turbos). In some ways I view the LC500 as like a modern '50s Ford Thunderbird. It's huge, it's heavy, it's powerful, but ultimately it's a very stylish and cool cruiser.

    • @alengreen589
      @alengreen589 10 месяцев назад

      @@elenchus I would say that the weight is very normal in this V8 class and in the roll race normally the LC must win this with 70 HP more.

    • @elenchus
      @elenchus 10 месяцев назад +7

      @@alengreen589 TL;DR: I'd argue the LC 500 really is that heavy, that turbocharged engines are deceptively powerful throughout their rev range so the output gap is smaller than most people think, and that none of this really matters because the LC 500 is a much nicer, better built car than the Q, or a Mustang (etc.) which added a lot of weight but made sense for what Lexus was going for.
      In-depth on weight: The Mustang GT and Camaro SS are respectively about 500 pounds lighter. The LC 500 is pretty much straight in line with the notoriously overweight Challenger Scat Pack and its 6.4 liter V8 in terms of weight. We might say that the LC500 is more like cars like the 840i or Audi S7, but those are turbocharged cars so it's difficult to use the same analysis on them. Even the contemporary Aston Vantage is a twin turbo V8 now.
      In-depth on powerbands: The other big factor is that it doesn't make 70 horsepower more; it makes 70 horsepower more at its absolute peak which its near for maybe 1 or 2 seconds in an entire drag race. At 3,000 RPM, the VR30 makes about 25 more horsepower than the V8. Right at about 4,500 RPM they're making roughly the same power (around 300 horsepower to the wheels). At 5,500, the V8 is putting down roughly 360 horsepower where the VR30 is right around 340. At each engine's peak power, to the wheels, the Lexus is putting down 50 more horsepower than the Infiniti, which is line with what we'd expect with normal drivetrain losses to each. Of course, take these numbers with a grain of salt; they're from different dynos on different days, so results will vary, but then, each engine will vary in the real world too as they respond to humidity, atmospheric pressure, and heat differently from each other, so even idealized dyno comparisons will be off in the real world.
      Anyway, the gap doesn't even begin to open up until right around 5,500 RPM as the VR30 levels out to the redline but the 2UR keeps pulling, as naturally aspirated engines are want to do. Then it's just a question of gear ratios; is Lexus able to keep that engine consistently above 5,500 RPM for the entire race and stay in its area of advantage (I have no idea). In which case it'll have between a 25 and 60 horsepower advantage throughout the remaining powerband.
      That relatively small horsepower surplus over a relatively small part of the power band has to stave off a ~300-400 pound weight difference (this is the AWD Q, I think, which adds weight, but the ATTESA system disables the AWD system at high speed to reduce drivetrain losses, assuming no slip, so we can basically ignore that in a roll race) and an engine that, from the press of the throttle, is inherently more responsive so it gets out of the gate quicker at low to mid range RPMs.
      Turbocharged engines are just faster, all things being equal, to their naturally aspirated counterparts assuming they have equal or similar peak horsepower and assuming that number is reported honestly. But I and most people would rather have the character of the V8 over even an excellent turbocharged engine like the VR series.
      In-depth on why none of this matters: As nice as the Q is, or really was when it came out something like 9 years ago, the LC 500 is a whole other class of quality and craftsmanship. All of that reinforcement, sound deadening, and essentially art work in the interior design has added a lot of weight. But it was the right call, because the LC 500 is a very traditional GT car whereas the Q is a sports sedan/sports coupe and can get away with being less well-built and rougher around the edges in exchange for performance.

      @@elenchusGreat write up and analysis of the power trains.
      I wasn’t surprised at all to see the Q60 pulling at lower speeds but I still wouldn’t buy one. I used to own the mechanically identical 2018 Q50RS AWD, and it was a love/hate relationship. Loved the engine and to my eyes, it was overall a very pretty car although I didn’t love all of the styling elements on the outside. Inside was nice but not setting any standards for the segment. But the biggest problem with the Q50/60 is that dumb Jatco 7AT. It’s truly at least 10 years behind the class. The chassis is good but not great, and the ride is frankly inexcusable for the semi-premium class it competes with. It’s like it left the factory before the chassis and suspension tuners finished the job. They have had ample time to fix this and yet it hasn’t really had any notable improvements since it was launched, aside from the 3.0t engines coming along in 2016. It also gets noisy on the freeway, which is weird because around town it seems pretty quiet. I got rid of it last year and at times I kind of miss it but when I see one I don’t exactly want it back, if that makes sense. I replaced it with a ‘22 Model 3 Performance and I love it. But between these two cars, the Lexus may not be the ultimate drag car but Lexus’s are very special in their own right. Well made, comfortable, and it’s always obvious sitting in a Lexus that someone was sweating the details. Do I wish it was a little quicker to justify the six figure price? Of course. But I wouldn’t buy it for racing. This would be a date night car/weekend cruiser. And for that, it would be supremely rewarding just for the engine note alone. And comfortable to boot.
      All that aside, Lexus could have given it more closely spaced gears with a tall OD to keep highway fuel economy decent. I’ve never understood why they gave their 10AT such silly tall gears.

All three times I pulled on him pretty hard before shutting down around 140+mph. Considering my big turbo Focus weighs less and makes more to the wheels considering his drivetrain loss (472crank, he's around 400whp), it makes sense. I own an LC and while I love the car it is disappointing that it loses to cars half its price. Would’ve liked to have seen them add a turbo so it gets 0 to 60 in the 3s. 4.5 seconds is unacceptable for a car this special.

      You can't add a turbo.. that's not how car development works.
      You think Toyota has a twin turbo V8? Fuck no they don't lol why would they EVER make one. That would require many millions in development cost for a LOW production engine that will almost never get used. That's suicide, you're asking for the equivalent of a LFA

      Nobody wants to see that incredibly ugly(by comparison) car line up next to those two pretty machines, especially the LC!
      It's no surprise that, many comments have been made even by journalists, of the nasty rear end and proportions.

    Great video Sam. A cool future video would be supra vs lc500.

    The Q60 RS looks like it has the same 1/4 mile and 0-60 times like the Gen 3 S550 Mustang GT 10R80 and has Sam run these two cars against each other yet?

      We ran my car vs the 5.0 Mustang 10sp and I easily took it off the line but the Mustang caught up at the end and won. Just shows the difference in the 10sp transmissions btwn Toyota and Ford.

      @@jimwallace4164it has less to do with gears ratios and more to do with hp. Mustang has 389 wheel horsepower power compared to the q60rs 369 wheel horspower. The q60rs is also heavier.

      @@2seepthe transmission on the Infiniti SUCKS and it does rob apart of the driving experience too
      The mustang runs a 11.9 quarter. Infiniti isn't close to that.

      It will last longer than any Infiniti, and that's why it's special. Performance isn't the only aspect of an automobile.
