How to design-build an eco-friendly and low-cost urban mud house in Delhi NCR, India?

- Is it easy to design and build an eco-friendly and low-cost mud house in a city like Delhi? Veena Lal, who runs a charitable society for destitute children by the name of Karm Marg, has made it possible. Her organization, organic farm, and mud house are located in sector 84, Faridabad in Delhi NCR region.
This video is about Veena Lal's house built within her organic farm. She is a firm believer in sustainable architecture and designing habitats for optimum use. She has applied the same for her own house and went ahead with the decision to build with mud. After years of research, travel, and a global pandemic, the house was finally complete in 2021. It is built from 70% sun-dried mud bricks (adobe bricks) and 30% fired bricks, cement, and stone.
Ar. Amol Mankeekar was appointed for designing and executing the project. Amol, a 30-yr old young architect, has been specializing in mud structures and was associated with the late Didi Contractor (Delia Narayan Kinzinger) who specialized in natural buildings and had received the Nari Shakti Puraskar in 2019.
Amol designed the house in a 'plus' shape to open each space to at least 2-3 open sides and allow maximum ventilation in the house. The house was supposed to be built completely in mud but due to maintenance issues, one leg (comprising all the utility spaces such as toilets, staircase, bathroom and wash area) was built in fired bricks and cement. The whole house is designed to keep water consumption and water flow in mind. Hence, all the water is channeled naturally towards 2 sets of banana trees that soak up the water and its nutrients. Even the toilet is a dry toilet without any flush or sewage system. The human waste is treated to prepare compost which is then used on the organic farm. Air conditioning is not required as the house is well ventilated and maintains the temperature inside the house. This is also because of the thick mud walls and mud floors that insulate the house well too. The backside faces the north and is used in summers, while the front side faces the south and is thus used in winters. There are various other features in the house design that have been incorporated according to Veena Lal's preferences.
According to Didi Contractor, "The house should be like a set, where life can take place. It should blend as much as possible. It shouldn't stand out. The house shouldn't be an identity in itself. It should just provide a space for that person's life to happen."
Also, for her sustainability meant, "you do whatever is possible from your side and then a little more. There is no 1 end goal. There is always a spectrum."

Whenever I read or hear mud house the first thing comes to my mind is the heavy rainfall
How these mud house survive in heavy rainfalls?
And also people say that it won't survive rainfall and it needs too much maintenance and we can't
Could you please tell a lil about it
@@shristipandey5620 people have been living in mud houses since ancient ages, such houses can very easily survive rain.even i was living in mud house/kaccha Ghar before 2007
@@shristipandey5620 Mud houses can survive heavy rainfall because it is strong due to the quality of raw-material used and the process which they use to make them. That being said, even concrete buildings fall down during heavy rainfall, and floods.
Many people say mud houses don't survive heavy rainfall, cause they've either only seen low quality make-do-mud houses or those made using techniques that aren't right. Also, many of them don't know what they're talking about, and are only influenced by these thoughts -
"Mud houses are only for poor"
&
"western way of living is better"
This is my idea of paradise, a house that accesses the garden from every room. Just beautiful.
Thank you very much 😁
My dream too
Same here 🥰

@@amolmankeekar8574 Hello Amol, great job on the architecture, plz share your contact details. I would like to discuss a project with you.
I remember living in stone, mud house with gobar flooring, ceiling during childhood in Rajasthan. The native-house felt cooler inside as it was breathing air. I still feel quiet lovely touch of mud/gobar surface.
Can I know if it would stay warmer in winters compared to concrete brick house ?
@@sneha3388no but I think ig might not be a problem because india Is a warm place and day by day it's going to increase and eventually wd will ran out of fossil fuels and the winter is going to be quite warmere also so it's not a big deal
The key is to not bother about "chaar log kya kahenge ?" and just do what you wish to do in life. Good job! I liked the ventilation and the small garden very much. I didn't find the dry toilet very convenient.
Chaar log bhi bolenge ki "badiya ghar banaya hai"
All the time after learning about dry toilet I was unable to get it out of my head. Everything is quite good but not the toilet.
yes i watching a video about a very charming European equivalent but that was the catch and then there may be questions of regulations when it comes to buildings and plumbing.
It's interesting to think about in terms of problem solving, it seems like you can build out of clay with less difficulty than might be expected which is a novel concept. But this won't necessarily have anything to do with the normal plumbing requirements of buildings and whatever structural requirements and costs that involves.
In a way, if you also don't have running water (trying to remember if that was the case in the other build), you're kind of going back to before modernity in the sense that it's now accepted that functional buildings must have plumbing.
But of course that didn't used to be the case and even after WW2 in Europe, it seems there are people who remember not living with a flushing toilet indoors in the 60s and 70s.
In Sydney a lot of the terrace houses had outdoor toilets and the way sewage waste was dealt with before flushing toilets was by "nightsoil collectors".
Of course in terms of public health and minimising disease spread, changes in plumbing have been associated with improvement in health. However, I'm not sure there's anything especially unhygienic about a "long drop", but they remain a very unpleasant concept. i guess it's worth it in some situations, i assume plumbing is very expensive, to the point that instead of a flushing toilet you could buy another block of land for another building. (Edit: writing at the start of the video, for some reason i thought this was going to be a schoolhouse for disadvantaged kids, i don't know why, and i was thinking that the best means to an end in that context.)
The only disease risk i can think of is if there were some kind of biting insects also attracted to waste. It's a bit gross to think about. I'm thinking about tsetse flies now, but they are from a completely different continent. Probably India has its fair share of freaky insects tho..
Me too felt very uncomfortable about dry toilet
Agreed
This types of houses will surely prevent the urban heat islands in the cities , more greenery , low carbon footprint and more aesthetic way of living.
👍
Thanks again for documenting her story and house building techniques. I wish India had more tiny house movement.😊💗💐
I think its a mud house rather than a tiny house...
That’s a “tiny” house?
Yes it's not a tiny house but it's not a big house, it's two 10*10 bedroom with only one living area build up, rest open area. Practical for four people living.
Delhi mein itni jagah mein toh 5 Ghar ban jaye ,tiny house movement 😔🤨🤨
I am living in my mud and stone house on my farm. I took stones and mud from my land itself. The remaining materials like roof tiles, windows, doors were procured within 10-15km. Wood, roof tiles were reused, taken from the nearby village. The whole house cost me less than 3 lakhs including labour cost.
I have seen documentary about this house in another youtube channel also. However, i enjoyed this video with same interest. Thats the beauty of eco friendly structures....Kudos to this Lady...She would inspire many people in our country..
Living with nature is the key to reduce the bad effects of modern lifestyle. It's great now people are thinking into this direction. Hopefully we will see more changes so that everyone can have this kind of environment.
Love the words said by Anmol "The should not be a seprate Identity in itself ,it should blend with the person living in" Makes sense.
Thank you :)
@@amolmankeekar8574 hi please share your number
Its really not only beautiful but a soothing experience to see such house with minimalism and sustainable development.
Not just is the concept of the house wonderful, the story telling was equally good to bring out all aspects of the house. Good job 👍🏼
Thanks Aditya

Only down to earth can bring such stories .
Hats off to the team.
Veena's house and Hari and Asha's house previously featured in your channel are two of the best mud houses I've seen. Both are simple and energy efficient.
Dear Mr Sasidharan, Thank you so much for watching our videos.
@@D2E how we can visit there?
This is so beautiful and nature friendly. Cement is the worst polluting industry ever. Hope people get inspired from this and build more homes like this. Thanks for bringing this to us. 🙏
Such a thoughtfully made house Veena... love how you explain everything....why you did what you did... and how you did it. So wonderful that you met Amol...someone who could translate your ideas into mud bricks and stone.....even make place for birds to nest....so inspiring and happy-making. Thank you Thank you
Thanks a lot 🙏
Amazing! Kudos to Veenaji for realising her dream of a mud house in Faridabad itself.. after having explored the hills. The compost-toilet is a tricky thing to achieve, and it’s quite impressive indeed.
Thanks, dry toliet as an idea not very convincing in the modern world but it is best for the environment and saving water.
@@veenachandu1 yes.
@@veenachandu1 How is this concept sustainable & healthy for living beings in the presence of poor AQI in NCR? People use Air Purifiers in this region. Nice concept from energy savings point of view, but I am not convinced to build such a house in this region with so much ventilation. My grandmother suffers from Asthma.
What a beautiful house you have made Veena. I live in Gurgaon . Can I please visit you ? I want to build a mudhouse also
@@veenachandu1 A couple of honest questions - how does the dry toilet system handle excreta when one has gastrointestinal infections - does the sawdust / mud cover it so that it does not spread through the compost? Or is there some herbal germicide that can be used to ensure that the compost is free of microbes that cause dysentery, cholera, or other gastro diseases? I assume that the pit will be closed to as to prevent flies from entering and then spreading infections around, correct?
Secondly, have you had any worms, pests or unwanted insects grow in the composted material? If not, was it due to some precaution you took (herbal germicide or insectide like say turmeric or neem ) or are such bacteria tolerated by manure and not passed up into the plants above the soil after use as manure for plants? Does turmeric and neem destroy the viability of the compost?
I really love the concept of composting and I wish more frontline research went into designing solutions to mitigate risk of infectious diseases and disease carrying pests from compost. This will save so much water and is the natural way of excretion for most of human history.
Such a wonderful idea DiDi decided to build a real home for living with nature and adopting the creatures living, really your idea and the Archetect played a great role in building a home. Thank you DIDI and also the Archetect service 🙏
Wow. . My dream home, wanted to stay in this kind of home from long time. Hope I can build it one day. 🙏🏻
Sister, it’s a beautiful house and love what you believe in, do what you can and a little more. You’re such an inspiration. God bless you 🙏🏽🙏🏽
No words, it’s really wonderful. I remembered the old days when people had small mud homes but their heart were big. Eat light, live simple life, spread love and always remember God. 😍
People are nowadays running after urban homes but this is the idea of village home . during my childhood I have seen a lot of homes like this in my village it was wonderful at that time but slowly people criticised the mud house and now everyone is praising
amazing back to the roots
I wish!! I could just visit this place once!!
Got inspiration for my future home 🏡..!! Thanks down to earth 😊👍
I really like the architect and homeowner's mindsets. Stunning work! Very inspiring to see a home built through intentionality like this! She made a beautiful choice indeed!
Beautiful house! I am really touched, because I thought we had absolutely lost mother nature’s touch👏🙏🏻
The dogs are the cutest thing , thank you for taking care of them you beautiful lady
Really incredible thoughts for mud house and that too so tastefully done up and breathing spaces.
Wish i could create one such soon
I am glad I found you. I have a 2400sq ft vacant land next to my house and was planning to convert it to a garden. But now I will look into it again.
That's the beauty of nature and being natural.
Love this concept and thanks DTE to bring this.
Our Mud house in Chand, Chhindwara stood for around 100 yrs. Its no more there now. We have a lot of wonderful memories from there.
She is living in paradise
Amazing work Amol...I love how this is like living in the garden. Absolutely wonderful and intelligent design with it's natural efficiency!
one of my absolutely favorite channels to watch on youtube. You guys bring such lovely stories across india. Love you immensly!
This is just what Delhi and all the urban spaces need. More power to you Amol and can't wait to meet you and learn more! Thank you Veena ji for providing this inspiring story. It would be an honour to visit this mini heaven.
Thank you Yashita :)
By looking only it feels calm and beautiful , it feels to visit this home once
Calm and peaceful indeed! Must visit
First time in my life, I have clapped multiple times while watching a vedio in youtube. I don't have words for your idea, building it, and for your architect. Great job.. God bless you.
Thank you for your kind words :)
Loved the house very much except the dry toilet idea.
This is what i was looking for many years but today finally found it. The home with totally near with nature. I also want to make the same house in pakistan.
Beautiful house. Such a nice place to come back to and call it home.
Simple but attractive, for earth has a natural beauty, a natural attraction, which appeals to all the senses.
Lovely windows letting in clean fresh air, and at night there is the rising moon casting it's silvery light in all the rooms.
So magical to sleep with moonlight washing all over you and creating it's magic around you.
The house with its hand crafted artefacts and the use of vibrantly coloured fabrics lends so much charm to this house.
The outdoors are as inviting as the indoors. In fact spending more time in the open spaces, and feeling the sun and wind, - - - - - they have a way of revitalising you.
Congratulations Mrs Lal for constructing this sensibly planned, cost effective , environment friendly house, and for incorporating that wonderful lady Didi's design concept and understanding her abiding love for Mother earth.
Wonderful ! Thanks to the architects who placed an exemplary model farm house, for the present weekend farming lovers
I was feeling a little under the weather, but after watching this video, I'm totally refreshed!!!
I love cob house a lot.. and feel happy that there are people who are moving towards natural building..
This is exactly how i always wanted my house to be....thank u for showing that it can be true...❤💟🥰
Omg, this house is only 10 mins from my house, never heard about it. Thanks fir sharing her story. Very environment friendly house and very thoughtful and that too in city like Faridabad where pollution level is too high and yes greenery is very less.
Just a day ago my mom was asking us to make a mud house . What a coincidence to come across this video.
न जाने कितने लोगों के लिए ये एक सपने जैसा है , बहुत सुंदर 👏👏
Just saw this wonderful video.....one word to describe... mesmerizing
Absolutely amazing..
This home 🏡 imbibes the concept of sustainability. ✅
I'm in love with this house. indeed its soothing to the soul
I am from a rural place Saigaon in Karnataka, Our house is built in the same way, way back 70 years ago. It's good to see returning to the roots.
Now our house needs to be rebuild again.
I'm from Trinidad and Tobago, where there's a huge Indian population. I discovered 'modern' mud houses through RUclips but after having a conversation with my mom, she fondly recalls visiting her Indian friend's home as a child, which was built out of this material.
I'm sure Trinidad still has them, mostly in the Southern region. It'll be a cool thing to see more architect of our times discuss how to revitalize these homes in different regions around the globe based on the climate, especially with "climate change"
Yes, same here in guyana my grandma used to tell me about the benabs (mud houses) there
Simply loved this mud house. Must be so soothing to mind
I too will have a house like this soon. Thanks for inspiring Veena ma'am.
Though i have lived in mud house during childhood but never thought in modern day someone would like to live in something like that....
i had always loved it.. and thank you for sharing it.
Mud house is a tradition of Manipur one of the north east state. Here, most house are built using mud and wood.
Bahut hi badhiya concept hai ma'am

OMG! I love this house and admire this lady soooooo much! What a blessing to be able to live this way. However I am so scared of lizards i could never live alone in such a lovely but open house. I need a cage! But I can appreciate that how correct this way of living is.
Out of the box thinking and very practical.
oh boy, I am like flabbergasted to experience such a home. I am ready to give double the cost if I get something like that. Wonderfully presented as well.
