  • Why is mud construction sustainable then using cement? Why are mud houses more comfortable to live in? What are the advantages of mud over cement for building and construction? Shagun Singh, the founder of GeeliMitti farms and educational research center talks about the common myths that are associated with mud houses. Most believe that mud houses are not strong enough, it's expensive to build and maintain and not suited to regions which have high rainfall. Shagun is breaking all these myths about mud houses. Later in the video, she is explaining about the thermal properties of mud houses and how the material helps in moderating temperature inside a home during different weather conditions. She then talks about different techniques and designs to build a mud house. This includes a step-by-step process of building a mud house

I live at a small village of mp.
and we have mud house,it was made 21 yr ago and honestly uh can't say it's a mud house. People around here have started making concrete house, i was also planning to make one (pakka makan) in future. but Maa Papa they always said..we not gonna break this house to make a new one, people around here are making oven for them and we not gonna do that..with time i realise they were right . I realise how important mud house is . and ☺And i am blessed to have one.. It's true their is huge temprature gap in summer and winter.we don't need cooler and Ac or heater nothing.Every year, before diwali festival ,we do all the repairing and maintenance work and that also done in very low cost.. It's great to see people are getting aware of mud house. ☺☺☺

It makes a lot of sense that myths as such that once recognized can be written or documented that then become something to build upon and toward living examples of how things actually work. Unfortunately this is what can become an example of how social assumptions literally enforce not only profit over basic life but also leverage to suppress intelligence in action and applied towards a quality of life that is self sustained..... Kudos to these people who so courageously move, act and develop beyond these “myths”.

This is very inspiring. I love the idea of sustainable / regenerative living away from cities. I'm wondering if you worry about proximity to hospitals and how you'd get there if a medical emergency arose. Also, does this way of life also include eating only what you can grow or that is grown locally, and if the latter, how you pay for it.

Yaa this has changed my perspective conpletely up side down... When she asked, " Why to even use cement? "At that time it struck to me... Our ancestors used to have same mud houses . When I visited Rajasthan there was a resort which was made up of couple of mud houses in a circular manner which was awesome😍😍.. And even mud houses are cool always.. But India's population is too much so I think this cannot be built in smart cities and states like Maharashtra,Karnataka but this can be done in Northeast and North .. I loved this idea🧡😍 One question popped in my mind in the last what about washroom in that mud house? 😶

Thats the reason, people add Lime. It is a natural material, that need to be applied from foundation level. Termites was my first doubt. So, there are natural solutions which people use. But you need expertise. Even for Cement building adding lime at foundation level was the norm, now no one does it, and Termiticides, pesticides etc are just termp relief with lot of toxic gasses.

Earth homes are not completely against using concrete, to build a taller structure using concrete the right amount would be a good solution , say for columns! The whole house doesn’t have to be made out of one material. As you go upper stories you can change the ratio of materials in mud and reduce the wall weight . Hope that answers your question

You can easily find out about that ask Any house hold helper, worker, who have lived in a village... Just put mud (लिपाई/छवाई) on your walls once a year or two... Just like you paint your concrete walls & that's it.... That's why painting is commonly called लिपाई-पुताई
