  • Emergency! Staff at Bird Vet Melbourne were a little shocked when this cockatoo and her owner urgently came in.
What had started as a cockatoo playing with a favourite toy had quickly become a life and death emergency. This bird was in pain, she hadn't been able to eat for 24 hours and her owner was panicking.
Can avian vet Dr Phil Sacks and his team save this bird? Does she lose her tongue? Does she swallow the bell? Does she choke?
We're not telling! You have to watch the video to find out.

Now I see why they have special bells for the birds.

I've seen it in real life, in lovebirds
      And some of them died
I never buy toys with bells, and if swings or balls have bells or jingle bells, I remove them immediately

Its always better to go to an experienced avian vet , that is relaxed and comfortable treating birds - as you can see in the video.

This is one of the reasons why I want to make my own line of responsible parrot toys. Way to many times I come acros unsafe toys for parrot and parakeets.

you know what? My lovebirds' favourite toys are cardboxes of fruit, wooden perches, crisp paper...stuff like that
Sometimes, the cheaper, the best, LOL

There are special bells you can be purchase from parrot shops that are better for the birds, but if you must have one like that, you can clamp the slot shut with some pliers before giving it to your parrot! It won't be as much jangle, but will prevent the tongue from getting stuck.
If you have a smaller parrot like a conure, some cat toys work, since the bell is encased in a ball, so they can still have fun making jangly noise, just make sure it's okay quality and can't be broken to do harm.
    I'm sorry for my English!

Well I experienced first hand that they are well powerfull enough to crack encased cat toys. Your better off not buying toys with bells like this. There are toys that mimic the bells with natural and less sharp materials. And I never give certain toys in their cage and only outside of the cage under supervision.

@@g.v.m7935 I've got lovebirds and say NO to bells, jingle bells, etc. Not even "special" for them or cat or dog toys. I always remove all kind of metal pieces and toys, like bells, and jingle bells.
      We should warn about this

Poor thing! I'm sorry but this turned my stomach to watch 😲, but so very glad the bird is doing okay ~ I hope 🙏
Just a reminder that not all toys are safe for birds ~ just like children you have to really look and think if there's anyway a child or a bird can get caught in something. 💖

I've got 30 lovebirds, one of them broke a ball where there was a jingle bell and cut her tongue, it was full of blood everywhere
And I've seen other birds die because they choked on the little piece inside a bell
Please ALWAYS REMOVE BELLS, JINGLE BELLS AND SIMILAR OR JUST DON'T BUY TOYS WITH THESE ITEMS
    THEY ARE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS
    Please 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Those bird bells that have a little clapper attached to a little round ring inside are just as bad. I had my conquer get his beak stuck it the little ring part. Fortunately l had a jewelry-making tool that reached in and cut the ring. It was a horrible experience. Make sure your bird can't reach the clapper of the bell.

One shld hold tongue with tiny grips and other pull the Bell off. Poor wee thing how cld he eat and drink as they have to sup using tongue. Bet he never looks at a Bell again, least not a small one.
