    One thing I forgot to mention is that Peak ReFuel has 39g of Protein and the MH maxes out at 28. That is a huge difference.

    Mountain house completely cooks a dish then freeze dries the cooked recipe. The other companies mix separate freeze dried or otherwise instant components into a package. The difference being that with MH you get a reconstituted full dish where the flavors have been allowed to blend. Is MH expensive? Yes. But then again you can make old school hardtack and jerky in your kitchen on the cheap if you just need to fill your belly.
    My general backcountry diet is really basic stuff like hardtack, jerky and peanut butter during the day then MH for supper when I’m chilling next to my fire. Kind of a luxury item. I have high blood pressure so the high sodium kind of prevents me from eating more MH lest I stroke out in some wilderness campsite.

      @@YourOldPalFernbark I’m 45 and have been really into backpacking and bushcraft since I was maybe 3. I just have been living in this world of rations and food options away from the house my whole life. I have to say that bannock and peanut butter and jerky works just fine but gets boring. The advantage of freeze dried meals is variety. I have recently got really into celestial seasonings herbal teas just for a wide flavor variety.

    • @YourOldPalFernbark
      @YourOldPalFernbark  4 года назад +1

      The Peak has better nutrition, but that is the only nod I will give to it. I don't think they taste that good ( have tried about six different menus) and they are way more expensive.

    • @troysawyers9781

      At our local Sportsman’s warehouse, the. Peak is $1.02 more than MH. I have tried the chicken fried rice, chili Mac and breakfast skillet for both. I noticed the MH has double the sodium which I’m sure is why some prefer the MH over Peak.
      By no means am I saying that MH is bad, for me, I prefer the less “salty” taste and the feeling of being full longer. My kids prefer the MH over Peak.

    • @YourOldPalFernbark
      @YourOldPalFernbark  4 года назад

      @@troysawyers9781 That just means you are shopping at a bad store. Sportsman's Warehouse is way over priced on MH. along with everything else in that store. Of course, everywhere is over priced on MH now. I won't argue that the sodium is a huge problem with MH.

    • @troysawyers9781
      @troysawyers9781 4 года назад

      Your Old Pal Fernbark I’ll do some looking around on amazon. All the other hunting and gun stores are more expensive for the dried food than sportsmans. They are our only “big chain” within 140 miles. I try to buy local as much as possible.
      Looking online, the MH is $9.49 and Peak is $10.99. So a $1.50 difference isn’t much to me for the added nutrition and less sodium.
      Each to their own though. I’m not going to judge anyone’s choice since it’s what tastes good to them and it’s their money.

    I tried the mountain house and peak. Honestly, the mountain house tasted better than the peak, even though the peak looked a lot better, but I felt like I could eat the Peak and continue a hike or whatever I'm doing without any issues, but the mountain house messed with my gut. Between the two I tried (chicken alfredo and skillet), I felt like I'd eaten something wrong for about 30-45 minutes after finishing the mountain house. I'll probably end up going with Peak for my emergency/hiking kit because the sodium and cholesterol; while still not great, is quite a bit lower than mountain house and the food, while a bit more bland, feels more like a real meal. I might still pick up some mountain house though if the price is right because my brother and I agreed that mountain house was definitely better tasting.

    Currently Mountain House entire bag has 560 cals. Nice smokey flvor. Readywise was not very good. I did like Peak Refuel the best. The potatoes in Peak Refuel are now reconstituting better than mountain House. I do think Mountain House- in most of their products- has really good flavoring and more of a smokey taste in everything from Chicken Fried Rice to Biscuits (really croutons) and gravy. (which Peak Refuel had a better consistancy).

    What’s the difference for packaging size between the Mountain House and Peak Refuel? I currently have some mountain house packages. But can only fit four in my 3 day assault pack that I bought for bush-craft/camping trips. I’m looking for packages of real food, (not processed) that I can still fit six to nine of, in my pack.
