It was mentioned that a group of people had abandoned the Prophet ﷺ prior to the Battle of Uhud comensing. I believe this specific group was constitued and lead by some of the Munafiqs who didn't want to put their lives on the line but also wanted to demoralise the muslims before the battle explaining why they abandoned the Prophet ﷺ. Ulema have explained the hadith about being ordered to fight until people testify Allah as fighting and expanding boarders so lands come under Islamic rule not necessarily the subjects. What is "Lesser Jihad"?
Lesser Jihad is to go to War. Greater Jihad is to control your desires.
