Hi, I just wanted to say thank you for being brave enough to share. There is a lot of shame associated with this problem and a lot of effort that goes into hiding it. I missed out on so many things through middle school and high school like the class trips or being afraid to join travel sports teams. Im 28 and I still have the problem everynight. I also tried those awful alarms and medications and they didn’t do anything for me either. And yes the size 7 diapers and large trash bags, my mom used the same exact solution for me all the way til I was an adult and was always mortified of my friends ever seeing the pampers or the bed set up. Im happy you outgrew it. Thank you again for your bravery.

I am hugging you and anyone else in your position. I can only imagine how horrible that must have been to deal with. I can hear the nervousness in your voice. You are an amazing person to come out with that and let people know that they aren't the only ones. My son is 13 and still wetting the bed, and my heart goes out to him when he goes to a sleepover with his buddies. The potential that is there for him to be made fun of would be enough in most to hide and not go to them. I think you, my son and others dealing with this are strong as hell. I appreciate you for this video.

Hi , I'm 18 and still wet the bed. I've been doing it every night for as long as I can remember. It's really weighing down on me so much. My family is sick of it , I had a cousin who had the same problem but she grew out of it and I didn't. I'm so depressed about it , I've never gone to a school camp for it. I'm starting with university next year and the anxiety is KILLING me. I'm scared that everyone is going to know. I'm too scared to go the doctor too. Thank you for sharing ❤️

However i peed my pants freaquently.
But nearly nobody noticed the wet spot on my scrotch or the wetness between my legs when the flood was greater.
So you must not be fearful .Many peopel wet the bed or pee the pants. This is humane.

Hello. Firstly, I just want to thank you for making this video as it means so much. Secondly, this is the first time I've ever spoken about this but I'm 18 years old and I've been experiencing this for as long as I can remember. I woke up on my 18th birthday with the bed soaked and all I could do was cry.. I cry every time I think about my future and how 'not normal' I feel all the time. This has been going on so long, my parents just ignore it at this point. I start uni in the fall (luckily I won't be living on campus) but it just sucks that I'm 'growing up' yet I'm still going through this. I really don't know what to do anymore. There's so much more to say but to wrap it, I'm just tired of it all.

It is just a challenge you have to deal with. Good luck with university! Learn a bunch and make great memories :)

During school trips and summer camps it was not a problem putting on the diapers and hiding them while sleeping. The trouble was getting rid of them in the morning. I the morning I was waken up earlier than the other kids to take a shower. I had not way to hide why. At school I became famous, but in a negative way.

    Hi,
Thank you for sharing your story. I feel your pain all too well - I struggeled with the same challenge - although it stopped at age 17 for me. It was such a pain, I had the same procedure - plastic mattress protection, additional absorbent blanket, diapers - I tried everything, no drinking, waking up at night - nothing helped. It gave me a low self confidence - and I thought I never would find a girlfriend - what if it happened, it felt like end of the world. I recovered, but I still can panic in dreams. It is something I don’t talk about - it makes me embarrassed even if it is 40 years ago. It affect us so much in a period of life where we are formed as adults.
So thanks again for telling your story, to help making this known - and break the taboo.

Emily, thank you so much for sharing! Needless to say pretty amazing to hear your story as it pretty much mirrors mine (stopped the summer before going to college). It’s crazy, but to this day 14 years later I still don’t think I would openly tell my friends. The reason being was I also had to do the things you did, hiding diapers in sleeping bags, coordinating help with my mom, making excuses not to do things…it truly was hard on my teenage girl self.
I will say…baby diapers?! You definitely should have invested in some goodnites/depends! Much easier and useful haha
Finally, while my little one is too young to worry about this (as is yours) I will caution that all I’ve read and seen is that our problem is hereditary. My sister had the problem till she was 13 or so and her 10 year old daughter is still wet at night. I think the solace you can have IF your daughter inherits bedwetting is that you will be amazing at explaining the problem and helping her deal with it in ways that even our caring and helpful parents could never be! :)

Michelle, thank you so much for sharing your experience! It’s so comforting to know I wasn’t alone.
I think my mom chose baby diapers because of the price difference. If I’m not mistaken, depends can be much more expensive - and we had a big family so we had to be more frugal growing up.
Thanks for the warning about it being hereditary- makes me wonder who else in my family has been keeping this secret 😂 But in all seriousness, thank you for the kind words! Have a blessed day and a Merry Christmas!

Michelle - thank you for sharing your story. It also describes my youth. I dried up at age 17, this is 40 years ago - and although it is not a complete secret, I am still uncomfortable when it is brought up. I am embarrassed now - I shouldn’t have been then or now, but it is such a painful memory. I am older than you - so my diaper options where much more limited, and was not as fancy as what diapers are today. Unfortunately I know that as well due to a period with health issues. I know we in theory should be open about our past to make it easier for new generations struggling the same way, but it is still difficult, and I think it will be so my entire life.
It helps to talk with fellow bedwetters and break the ice - but it is only temporary. Every time it is brought up in a new group or setting I am uncomfortable.

The anxiety I would’ve had wanting to make sure my mom woke me up on time to not get “exposed”. But as a parent I would have even more anxiety making sure I woke up as well so I would’ve probably told them the same to be safe. But at the same time I would’ve probably woke my kid up early to get ready then pretend sleep so she could still be apart of it all lol that’s me and my FOMO (fear of missing out) for them because I never really got to participate in things as a teen (strict parents).
Side Note: By 4 mine are usually accident free. It’s rare they ever pee themselves at all. Like 1x a year and it was because he drank a lot before bed and was really tired because he went to sleep late and just wasn’t aware.

You had a great mom I am much older and diapers were not available for me so I tried the pills, and wonder now if they were placebos and going to slumber parties I would stay up all night. My mother was not as understanding but also never complained but my brother said I smelled as I went to school which I had no clue. When I was 17 I started smoking cigarettes and that’s when it stopped not sure why. I don’t smoke now quit in the 80s when I had children but I developed sleep apnea and wondered if I always had it and it affected me as a child. So just a guess. I for some reason didn’t worry about my kids and they were never bedwetters. Also was told by nuns a story about a girl who said a prayer before her first communion and it came true so of course before I made mine that is what I prayed for unfortunately it didn’t come true until I was about 17 although it happened once when I drank at a beer party and was living in a dorm in college so that was a fun time! What's this thing called Sleep ??
Has it ever struck you as odd that we spend nearly a third of our lives laying down in an unconscious state? Even though scientists can’t quite pin down the exact explanation for why we need to sleep, we do know that it is extremely necessary. Good sleep correlates to lower stress, more happiness, and better overall health. In this article we’ll dig into what exactly the body does while it slumbers. As you sleep at night you pass through a series of four stages. The cycle goes through the stages and then has its own process for repeating them. In order to wake up feeling well rested and energized, it’s important that these cycles complete themselves.
There are many myths surrounding the problem of bedwetting. If parent are quizzed on whether the child is a deep sleeper, 97% will respond in the affirmative. Frustrated Parents are usually told by their Health Care Professional "Don't worry about it they'll probably outgrow it." Some do, many don't. Set an alarm and get them up before you go to bed. You drag them to the toilet like a sack of potatoes, get them to void and thereby teach the child to do the one thing you're trying to stop, wetting in their sleep! They are not awake. Nocturnal enuresis is a parasomnia. A SLEEP DISORDER !!
REM sleep [ Sleep chart ]

The latter part of our sleep cycle, if we are sleeping normally, is in REM (RAPID EYE MOVEMENT) That is when you can leap out of bed and say “Wow, great sleep” I feel terrific. If you awaken someone who is in Delta, slow wave sleep it may take a while to get their motors running, they are usually very groggy.
The Delta waves get even stronger in this period. For that reason this stage is sometimes referred to as Delta Sleep. Generally, it is in this stage that sleepwalking and bed-wetting occur. An individual with a sleep disorder may experience a rapid REW rise (red on the chart) that only lasts for 20-90 seconds. That is not long enough to attain wakefulness. They may dream they are in the bathroom and void in the bed. Some individuals will never wet the bed, however a sleep disorder may express as night terrors, bruxism (grinding the teeth), restless leg syndrome, sleep talking, sleep apnea.
Sleep begins in stages 1 and 2, (theta sleep) the blue line on the chart and then progresses to 3 and 4, (delta). After stage 4 sleep is complete, stage 3 and then stage 2 are repeated before entering REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, which is where we dream. Once REM sleep is over, the body usually returns to stage 2. We then cycle through these stages approximately four or five times throughout the night. During the last one or two cycles, there is no delta sleep at all.
On average, we enter the REM stage approximately 90 minutes after falling asleep. The first cycle of REM sleep might last only a short amount of time, but each cycle becomes longer. REM sleep can last up to an hour as sleep progresses. Good quality sleep requires both non-REM and REM sleep in uninterrupted cycles. If we are sleeping normally we will spend 20-30 minutes in stage 4 usually twice in the early phase of sleep. The latter part of sleep is usually most prevalent in the late stages and early morning. We should awaken from REM fully refreshed.
In most studies, sleep electroencephalograms have demonstrated a marked difference with nocturnal enuresis. When surveyed, however, parents consistently maintain that their child with nocturnal enuresis is a “deep sleeper,” compared with their offspring who are not bedwetters. The red line on the chart denotes the typical enuretic. A bedwetter will drop quickly into stage 4 sleep and remain there for long periods. The rapid REM rise on the chart only lasts for 20-90 seconds, not long enough to attain wakefulness and they’ll void at this point. Sometimes they’ll dream they are in the bathroom.
Other surveys have found that children with nocturnal enuresis are more subject to “confused awakenings,” such as night terrors or sleepwalking than children who do not wet the bed. Source: American Family Physicians - 2003.
    (Sleep Chart)

Adults spend about one-third of their day sleeping, or 7 to 9 hours. There are 2 types of sleep: Rapid-eye movement (REM), when most dreams occur Non-REM, which has 3 stages, including the deepest sleep During normal sleep, a person cycles through REM and non-REM stages several times during the night. Each cycle lasts about 90 minutes, but the amount of non-REM versus REM sleep changes throughout the night. More REM sleep tends to occur toward the morning. REM sleep first occurs about 90 minutes after falling asleep and accounts for less than one-fourth of total sleep time. Most dreams occur during REM sleep. The eyes move fast from side-to-side under the eyelids. Brain wave activity, heart rate, and blood pressure increase close to rates when awake. Breathing becomes faster and inconsistent. Arm and leg muscles become temporarily paralyzed so you cannot act out your dreams.
Older people spend less time in the REM stage Sleep disorders disrupt these normal cycles which in turn causes other health problems. Both REM and non-REM sleep are needed to stay healthy.
Stanford University's William Dement, MD, PhD, who many refer to as the “father of sleep medicine.” Identified many of the common "Sleep Disorders" back in the mid '80s: Sleep disorders:
Nocturnal enuresis, Bruxism, Central Sleep Apnea, Circadian Rhythm Hypersomnia, Narcolepsy, Night Terrors, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, REM Sleep Behavior Disorder, Sleepwalking, Sleep-Related Breathing Disorders, Sleep-Related Movement Disorder, Sleep Paralysis. These are all PARASOMNIAS!!
National Geographic, Dec. 1987 featured William Dement in an article Called “What’s this thing called sleep”.
Can bedwetting be inherited ?? NO! but a sleep disorder most definitely can be.. Siblings, parents, uncles and cousins may exhibit different sleep disorder symptoms such as above, however they are only symptoms.
The problem is incorrect sleep. Someone who experiences bedwetting remains primarily in the deep Stage 4 sleep too long; therefore, they’re missing uninterrupted cycles and limiting dream sleep. Undoubtedly, this compromises normal, healthy, and restful sleep. This is why we often see bedwetters with mood irregularities, ADD/ADHD symptoms, difficulty awakening in the morning, and struggles with schoolwork.
This long Stage 4 sleep pattern also causes the disconnect between the brain and the bladder, which ultimately leads to the symptom of bedwetting.
REM sleep can be considered the emotional restorative phase of sleep while stage 4 deep sleep is the physically restorative.
    Dreams
Dreams can take on many different forms. Lucid dreams occur when a person is in a dream while being actively aware that they are dreaming. Vivid dreams involve especially realistic or clear dream content. Bad dreams are composed of bothersome or distressing content. Recurring dreams involve the same imagery repeating in multiple dreams over time. Even within normal dreams, there are certain types of content that are especially identifiable.
Among the most recognizable and common themes Trusted Source National Library of Medicine, Biotech The National Center for Biotechnology Information advances science and health by providing access to biomedical and genomic information. View Source in dreams are things like flying, falling, being chased, or being unable to find a bathroom.
The human mind is not designed to remember dreams. REM Stage sleep can be considered the emotional clearing house of the mind. If you dwell on a dream when you awaken you’ll remember fragments, but dreams are not intended to go into long term memory despite the plethora of dream books & journals on Amazon.
    Alarm systems.
When an enuretic is in stage four sleep they are unconscious and generally cannot hear an alarm. A dual system that sounds for child and parent can be an effective tool when combined with a training program to correct the sleep architecture. The care givers must become the Coaches in a specific program to correct the architecture of sleep. It can take up to 3-4 months to train a child or adult to sleep better or more normally. One of the best programs currently available is: www.nobedwetting.com

So many comments to your story long time ago. There are so much shame and humiliation related to bedwetting. I guess we all handle it differently - but it has an impact even if most of us have dryed up long time ago. I guess the reason for the many comments, is that there are not many places to talk about our problems - and it is still painful to talk about this. How many of us are still experiencing issues with wetting (night and&or day)?

Great courage in sharing this very personal part of your life. I totally get the frustration, embarrassment and shame you had due to bedwetting, I too was a teen enuretic (bedwetter). Funny you mention using hte term enuresis, once I found out the medical term for bedwetting I uses to tell myself I was enuretic and not a bedwetter. Though technically both terms mean the same thing.
I didn't use protection other than waterproof protection on my bed. My bedwetting was not an every night thing so washing my sheets and boxers ever so often wasn't a big burden, but that does not really make it any better, peeing the bed as a teen is a struggle.
I like how you said your mom said that it was your challenge and that everyone has a challenge. I would try and tell myself that other kids at my middle or high school had a lot worst things to deal with then I was with peeing the bed. But it didn't always work even if it was true. As I got older I realized that in comparison to other more major issues that people might have, bedwetting is realy more an inconvenience than a real issue. It is society that puts the embarrassment and shame on being a bedwetter.. errr enuretic.
OMGosh, the pee dreams. Those are so real. Pro tip, don't pee in your dreams, its a trap. LOL
Again, good on you for sharing here in such a public forum. The stigma of bedwetting is a society made stigma. For us who had to deal with it, in the end it really is only a big deal casue society wants us to keep it a secret. I now often wonder, who else in my classes were dealing with bedwetting? I know now by the stat that I could not have been the only dude at my school wetting his bed.

Thanks so much for the kind words and for sharing your story. What you said about it mostly being an inconvenience is so true. Things could have been a lot worse!

@@LimabeanLiving You are welcome. The struggle was/is real. Us enuretics/bedwetters need to support each other. Def things could have been a lot worst as far as conditions go thinking cancer, mental issues, and the like, but when we were bedwetting as teens it def felt like it was the end of the world for us.
My biggest issue/regret/shame/embaassment was that I felt so alone in it. Like I just knew not other kid at my middle or high school was peeing their bed too like me. Due to the stigma of bedwetting that keeps it this great big secret. Based on stats that say 2% or more of teens deal with enuresis/bedwetting I know now that at my high school of over 1500 students I was, at minimum, one of thirty students coping with bedwetting.
Power to you, power to us for making it.

It is common problem, it is very brave and kind of you to share your experience and to support the people who has the problem, may i ask at which age you started wearing diapers to bed ? and did you do it by yourself or did you need your mom help?

    • @LimabeanLiving

Well as a baby and toddler I wore them to bed (with my moms help obviously). And I just kept having to wear them because I never woke up dry. I don’t remember the age my mom stopped helping me out them on. So it must have been pretty young.

I'll be 54 this June and still wear diapers at night because I wet the bed. I wear pin-on cloth diapers with a cloth liner and covered with plastic pants (or "rubber pants" as some people call them even though this is a misnomer). I also wear a disposable diaper with tape tabs on some nights. Finally, I have the bed covered with a fitted plastic sheet for added protection. I was curious - did you use tape on diapers to manage your bedwetting or did you use "Goodnites" or pull-ups? Thanks for sharing your story.
