  • Greetings, I hope you enjoy this December garden tour of my backyard here in Austin Texas Zone 8B. As we prepare for first frost with lows well below freezing, there are still all sorts of things that are growing. I hope this update on my raised bed is entertaining, informative, and inspiring!
Here in Austin Texas, I am working with some really dense clay soil, because of this, I've decided to grow fruits and veggies in a large raised bed, and build a french drain for my peach and fig trees.
My raised bed is 60 square feet (20'x3') and about 2 feet high, this winter I'm growing parsley, green onion, eggplant, cabbage, carrots, tomatoes, strawberries, blackberries, radishes, and a fig tree. I'm also zone pushing with pineapples and an avocado tree in containers, which have moved into my garage under grow lamps for the winter.
I hope this garden tour is entertaining, educational, and inspiring. Good luck with all your gardening projects this winter!

I'm in north texas myself. I do my gardening at night to avoid the sun and heat in summer. I use a headlamp.

Smart! I put the lights up for having guests over, but I really enjoyed being able to see what was rustling in the formerly dark corners of my yard

Amazingly inviting backyard as usual. If you haven't yet you might plant your winter-rye lawn.
With that many plants you won't regret a grow light. Even a basic 400 watt HPS might be enough. I haven't tried LED$ yet but they work better for hotter/uncooled rooms. My high-output T5 bulbs go bad annoyingly often, like under 90 days sometimes.
It took me a week but I did eventually send two emails. I mainly wanted you to see the PH-availability chart at the end, & if you could comprehend it then my plant-pictures would make more sense. It basically shows that in my area shallow-soil lacks upper-ph nutrients & raised-beds too tall might lack iron, boron...

Howdy Bob! Finally got around to catching up on my emails, and let me say, your garden was a huge inspiration! The soil quality in my lot sucks so hard, im just trying to budget and plan for bringing in some quality soil, not sure how/when yet, but hopefully before February

@@AustinTexasGardening 15 miles south of Austin. I'd like to know where you purchased the lights. Want some just like that. I don't have enough shade in my yard so I choose to work in the evenings with a headlamp during summer.

@@daviddeane3163 home depot at mueller, look for “commercial grade string lights”, mine are a mix of 48 foot and 24 foot strings, you can mix and match up to 240 feet of lights together
